Tytania – 01: Rich and Nerdy

Because even a plea of innocence is guilty of wasting his time.

So Tytania is finally subbed and it seems it was worth the wait. While there are some passing similarities to LOGH, I think that it was different enough in some respects. While the females will be horrifically out numbered by the guys I don’t think were going to have as large as cast as LOGH given how I doubt it will be 110 episodes long, so I highly doubt they will give us 30 plus Admirals. That said I still have no idea how long this is going to run for but hopefully it will be enough to get through the novels that have been published so far. That being said there was some QUALITY animation with the distance shots, and it’s a very niche kind of series that will lack the mass appeal to grab that godly budget, but nevertheless I like the tactical aspect and perhaps a bit of the strategic aspect that they have shown so far. So if you are the kind of War College junkie/aspirant like me Tytania is well worth looking into. Combat is much slower with ships only having a forward arc and engagements taking place over hundreds of kilometers.

They see us rollin they hatin, partollin and tryin to catch us ridin dirty (The Nobles observe Tytania strolling. They feel intense envy on account of our great success in life, and so, they keep watch of their actions in order to apprehend them for shooting the minister.)

The Tytania are the most prestigious family within the Verdhana Empire after their defection from and subsequent conquest of the old Federation. Such is there power they can roll up to Emperor Harsha VI’s birthday party and shoot his prime minister under the pretext that the old coot was a traitor. The guards look about nervously while the nobles and the Emperor tremble and cower in fear. Clearly these Tytania Lords mean business and seem bent on keeping the Emperor as little more than a figurehead as they try and secure their Pax Tytania. Nevertheless the bush war against Euria has produced one significant challenge to Tytania’s supremacy, the laid back and hither to unknown Admiral Fan Hulic.

Right now of the Tytania Dukes it seems that Red or Juslan seems to be the front runner in becoming the successor to Ajman as he is the most observant of the bunch and seems to gather much more of what Ajuman has to say. Green or Idris seems the ost cocky of the bunch and Brown or Zalisch seems to be the kind of guy who prefers brutal and crude methods to getting things done. Ajman or White is by far the wiser and seems to have a finer grasp over how to use intimidation to beat down his foes at court. These guys appear to mean business and have flair of calculated and reasoned brutality to them which makes them all the more dangerous. Still it seems poor Ariabart or Blue will have his mettle tested first.

Despite the seeming defeat of Ariabart at the hands of Fan Hulic, I do not think that it was as clear cut a victory as some people would think. It was well and good that Fan Hulic obliterated one fleet but Tytania probably has more and much of the Eurian Fleet was also lost in luring them within range of the Whigerd Cannons, more over those Whigerd Cannons were single shot weapons that probably took resources to build. Fan Hulic escaped with a fleet of destroyers but that trick probably won’t work again and the loss in major capital ships will be hard to replace if not impossible altogether if Tytania attacks in force. Still Ariabart did prove himself a competent commander by not calling Fan Hulic’s bluff and he did try and do the correct thing in using maneuver to cut off any escape route and try in order to annihilate the opposition in one go. A quick finish would have been preferable to having the Eurian’s escape with any portion of their fleet which could have easily scattered if their defeat was not total. If the Eurian’s scattered their fleet they could remained a threat to any supply lines as commerce raiding requires fewer resources than commerce protection. Even having a Fleet in being at some strategically strong defensive position could have diverted a higher portion of Tytanian military might, as in the case of the German Fleet in both World Wars. As mighty as the Tytania Navy is it would not have been prudent of them to be locked in a drawn out game of cat and mouse in the depths of space.

Ariabart did not do anything wrong by fighting conservatively given how he did not take any unnecessary risks and he was fighting against an unknown quantity. Given how conventional wisdom had declared that Whigred Cannons were useless in a fleet engagement, he could not have predicted their use by Fan Hulic. The only thing I think he could have done better was to spread out while intensifying power instead of turning tail. His fleet would have been mauled but at least more ships would have survived. If volume of fire had been maintained not all of those cannons would have been able to fire. The Eurians know that they do not stand a chance if they fight conventionally because even with Fan Hulic if Tytania attacks every where then Euria will be weak somewhere and Fan Hulic can’t be everywhere at once. Unless they get allies quick they cannot fight conventionally so scattering their fleet and making any occupation costly would probably be the best way to get around Tytania’s superiority in the long run.

Maybe some of you guys would have done something different to beat Fan Hulic? If so feel free to share since I think there are other ways to approach the dilemma, if not approach the battle differently altogether. I just love how Clausewitzian Fog and Friction gave Araibart a good kicking that was on par with the one Fan Hulic gave him.

Fan Hulic won round one but it remains to be seen if he can get the jump on Ajman or any of the other Tytanian Admirals. Now that he is a known quantity Fan Hulic will have many tougher battles to fight. I am not sure if Euria is going to be in the fight much longer if the full weight of Tytania is brought to bear since I doubt even Fan Hulic can beat all five of Tytania’s great admirals at once. Not sure how Lydia is going to contribute to the series, but sure maybe the thing that tears Tytania asunder is rivalry over a woman. Over all it was a good episode if a bit wonky in the animation department. I can’t wait to see what happens next. I like the old school feel of the ship designs even if they fight just like the ships from LOGH it al least forces the adept use of manuever over just brute force or for now hax. The aesthetic is alright even if it looks like rich bastards in space for the Tytania side. Wonder if Lydia will end up with a host club of Tytanian dukes…

It’s rather sad though, with the presence of shielding on ships the chances of having strike craft (fighters and corvettes, borrowing from HW2 terminology) are low.

The lack of transforming battlecarriers helmed by shockingly gay yet surprisingly GAR helmsmen disappoints me.

I’ll admit though, this series has me interested (although I still have to catch up on Gundam 00 and have a bad case of Macross hangover – just finished marathoning SDFM, Plus and Zero in fact) simply for the fact that I’m a sucker for space operas. That and the screengrabs give me a good Dune-vibe.

I’m not especially bothered if the animation is low-budget: chances are this’ll be a good story. There are plenty of anime out there already with nice animation dressing up a substandard story (like putting lipstick on a Bittenfeld).

And there’s nothing like a summary execution for making it clear who’s really in charge.

What? No bubblegum screenshots? No comparisons between Fan and Ash from Evil Dead?

    I’m sorely disappointed, Crusader.

I’m glad we FINALLY got some fucking decent subs for Tytania. I can’t wait to watch this. Space Opera is godly genre. The production values so far in this episode seem good, even above-par but it seems to be very heavy on dialogue (which is probably why a lot of subbers avoided this like the plague).

I love how diverse the character designs are on this show. It seems the cast list is going to be very large so I’m not sure how that’s going to add or detract from the overall main plot of the series but I’m very eager to see how this show develops over the season.

Does anyone know if this is the standard 13 eps or is Tytania getting a full 26?

Storyline-wise seems fine, I am going to continue watching this for the old-school space battles as well. Lack of wimmens for once.

I’m trying not to get too excited about this one for fear of disappointment, but from episode one it does appear that the days of true space opera are not yet behind us. I’m curious about the number of episodes myself.

LoTGH 2 ? Dunno , but it seems damn sweet so far.

haha white and nerdy. Weird Al Yankovic is awesome.
but yeah… the lack of potential badasses (who are not just cocky), women, and something extraordinary is putting me off…
I don’t know if I’ll continue with this. I’m behind on enough shows as it is and now I’m thinking of adding a show that doesn’t look even the slightest appealing? That’s a bit too much. I’ll probably end up watching the next ep to give this another chance, but first impressions are pretty important for me when it comes to picking up a series.

@Lubczyk: You dont watch these kinds of shows much, eh?, we should be happy we got a loli, i doubt there will be much more female characters, so dont get your hopes up
And even if this not turns out to be a new LoTGH, it will be awesome, it is space opera after all

  12. Posted October 14, 2008 at 6:57 pm | Permalink

I guess with the shorter length that the fighters got cut out soe we don;t get a Poplan or Julian just yet… Fighters would have been nice but with combat ranges that are measured in hundreds of kilometers I can see how having fighters race across that distance without getting picked off would be a problem. Still if forces more elegant maneuvering for both sides.

Macross had its sexy Valkyries, but here its about massive numbers of expendable Capital ships, ship heroics are not as likely given how even the flagships are liable to be destroyed if the commander is sloppy.

Yep there’s no other way to say happy birthday than offing someone at the party. It sure took some audacity to pull that one off.

Hopefully bad animation won’t be that much of a gripe as time goes on I am use to QUALITY but Tytania deserves better and hopefully the space battles will be lovely. There is a lot of potential here and I hope they use it.

Tea >>>> Bubblegum sorry it’s just more nonchalant and shows much more swagger in the heat of battle. It’s a bit dialogue heavy but hopefully we won’t have to wait ages between subs.

It’s very much in teh vein of LOGH and hopefully it won’t get too modern even if the female cast is greatly outnumbered by the males. Since there are no bridge bunnies its a bit easier to focus on the commanders than their surroundings.

It has a good pedigree and hopefully will be as good as its predecessor.

Lyidia is probably all we are going to get, with possibly one or two more that have not shown up in the OP or ED.

LOGH 2 this is not but right now the Tytania seem a lot more overtly bad ass than Reinhard who had to ply by some rules. In contrast Ajman writes them himself it seems.

The focus seems more to be aboput polics and war than romance, that said it is very niche. Ajman so far has been pretty bad ass, it takes some balls to kill the Chancellor on the emperor’s birthday in front of everyone, and then excuse yourself.

Space Opera is rare, I ma just happy we finally got one.

Also on the topic of the original 110 episode LOGH series, everyone should watch that series atleast once in their lifetime!

Did you just reference “Ridin'” in a take on Tytania?

  15. Posted October 14, 2008 at 8:32 pm | Permalink

It should be mandatory by my reckoning.

Yes… is there something wrong with that? Clearly the other nobles were hatin on Tytania.

  16. Posted October 14, 2008 at 11:59 pm | Permalink

Definitely watching this series. I still haven’t gotten started on LOGH, but will probably enjoy this nonetheless. Lack of plausible science fiction doesn’t bother me if the story and characters are engaging. I mean, the universe just got saved through J-Pop in MF and I’m the happiest guy for it.

Am pretty sure buzz on the street, on the corner of Nerd and Awesome, says that Jouslan (red) is actually the main character.

However! I doubt it’ll be too similar to LoGH, Tanaka Yoshiki seems to be the sort of guy who likes to do write lots of different things and I don’t think he’d write Tytania as a repeat of LoGh. I’ve never read his works, sadly, and don’t have any real Tytania spoilers, though. Someone compared Jouslan more to Yang than Reinhard, so maybe this time Yang will win. Well, the philosophick half of Yang, anyway.

The other half is busy blowing bubblegum on a command deck on the other side of the battle lines.

Good job of mixing Ridin Dirty and White & Nerdy songs with Tytania.

PS. First pictures post quote is from Warhammer 40k Inquisitors and last quote is from Frank Herbert’s Dune.

On the issue of strategy, I don’t think it really matters for Fan Hulic if he lost a lot of ships. We know he doesn’t really stand a chance anyway. He needs to buy time and guerrilla operations probably won’t do.Guerrilla can’t prevent Tytania from reaching the capital, it’s a long term strategy that requires massive sacrifice(loosing control of the capital, constant occupation, etc). You wouldn’t want to do that unless you’re absolutely desperate. Fan Hulic and its superiors obviously weren’t.They probably have an alternate strategy.

  20. Posted October 15, 2008 at 2:15 pm | Permalink

    @ Crusader
Heh, I guess that was pretty badass, but not quite the kind I wanted. But anyway, I guess I just wasn’t expecting that to be the focus. That said, I didn’t know much going into this, so yeah. I can see how people might like it, but it’s not for me.
And that song has been stuck in my head… lol

  21. Posted October 15, 2008 at 4:11 pm | Permalink

Go watch LOGH and finish it up, it is truly a one of a kind anime that most fans should watch. Especially if you like space opera.

    @Dorian Cornelius Jasper
Juslan could be a main character given his place in the promo material on the Tytania side of things. We shall see if that will be the case though.

Right now the absence of a parade of admirals means it will probably be less about large scale fleet maneuvers and having meetings take up whole eps. Right now the absence of strike craft means that battles turn out slightly different, and sicne technology progression it might become a factor since in LOGH technology on both sides remained rather static.

    @SoSo/Karin lover
Yep indeed, though this doesn’t seem nearly as GRIMDARK as either of them.

Even with a delaying actions losing that many ships is still going to hurt, especially since the rest of the Tytania Fleet is still out there and still vastly out number Fan Hulic. giving up territory and preserving the fleet is still important since ships are about the only way to fight back given Tytania’s political clout. Long supply lines are always a danger and I imagine if Fan Hulic was leading the Tytanian fleet by the nose and streching out their supply lines that he could have delivered something similar to von Manstein’s back hand blow to the Russians after the loss of the German 6th Army at the Third Battle of Kharkov.

I recommend going in three episodes deep before writing it off that is usually the point where you can tell where things are heading.

That’s assuming there’s a long supply line and that Tytania doesn’t have enough force to protect its supply lines AND crush Fan Hulic forces with overwhelming superiority.Anyway, for now there’s not enough information to discuss it in details.
