The customary EOY Thanksgiving Post by Impz

When we actually need Haruhi to provide peace.

As we come to the end of the year, it is always nice to provide some flashbacks to the year in review. 2008 has been a terrible year in reality, what with the economic recession, the horrid Mumbai blastings that killed many innocents including a Singaporean lady, the uneasy truce that just ended between Israel and Palestine and the escalating oil prices (though it dropped to 37 US dollars due to recession). However, THAT is not a political site. So, let’s screw that start and go into the topic we are actually discussing.

Anime Blogging in 2008 for THAT. It will not be that long an entry. Just in case you get really lazy to read whatever is below, please give us your feedback for these three questions.

1. Who are the bloggers you usually follow in THAT?
2. What do you like most about THAT?
3. What do you hope to see more often in THAT?

So, before I go into TL:DR territory here, I will go straight into the report. Enjoy! Also, get ready for tons of images that makes no sense at all in this post.

Status of THAT Bloggers

Just one of the many series that we blogged this year!

This year was a rather tumultuous year for THAT. THAT Bloggers came in with high spirits and fervor, before disappearing into the shadows, never to appear again. Calawain continuously told me about my futile attempts to recruit writers that stopped after a few entries. He also took over the Preview entries after saying that I generally make a mess of the html (he’s just a control freak, really!) Crusader obviously had a good year in the blog. His entries ranked among the most popular series covered in the blog. They include True Tears, Macross Frontier and currently Gundam00. However, it is the collaborations with Calawain on Code Geass that made Code Geass the most popular anime series blogged in THAT. Of course, our three consistent bloggers in the form of Lupus, RV and Shokkeru still churned out entries on their own pace. Of course, we also have the wandering minstrel Lelangir writing editorial posts in this hugely episodic summary blog to give us some variety.

Some bloggers of THAT also went on for greener pastures after a short stay in our blog. Riex and Itsubun. Jiff, Extrange and Maipeisu became busy with real life situations and started to write less …or more like nothing. Still, we will be patiently waiting for them to return when they get more free time on their hands. For now, you just have to make do with the few of us who are still around, kicking and trying to get your attention.

Growth of the Blog

Everything has to grow up, even THAT Anime Blog. But why….must they GROW UP!

Once a single red dot in the anime blogosphere, I can be proud to say that we have gone a long way from there. We are hardly in the league of elite anime bloggers such as Random Curiosity, DarkMirage or Moetron, but we do have our loyal readers out there who have been gracious to follow our blog.

In the past year (up to December 23rd, 2008), we have gotten close to 1.6 million visitors, and a total of 3.2 million pageviews. Of course, if we are going to go into the details, we only have 890,000 unique visitors in the past year. I must say that it is not too shabby because it meant that we have around 110,000 visitors every month. I can’t complain about that. Traffic also grew from around 2000 visitors at the start of January to an average of 5000-6000 monthly visitors in the last three months of the year.

Other trivia included Firefox being the preferred browser choice by users of THAT. In the search engine results, the top search words for the blog is “that anime blog” (gasp), “anime blog” and “that animeblog.” The top three popular entries for the year is the “Charlie Brown entry“, “Our fall anime preview for 2008” and of course the post that no one really cares, “Ranking the espada.”

If I said that I expected the blog to have some decent popularity when I first started this blog with three of my real life friends (who have since lost interest in anime, and left to other interests), I will be lying. Nonetheless, it is everyone who has contributed to the “success” of the blog. Without your support (yes, cliche time), we will not be where we are!

Go, Sheryl, Go!

Here are the top 10 blogs in order that brought the most traffic to us. We thank them for linking our humble site.

The future

We will usher the coming of the new year with a new blog template in January or February. It will be very drastically different from the current template, and is aimed to diversify our content to things other than episodic summaries. Other than that, we will just be here churning our usual stuff, and do come back often.

Thank you once again, and do comment for the feedback details. If you forgot, here are the details again!

1. Who are the bloggers you usually follow in THAT?
2. What do you like most about THAT?
3. What do you hope to see more often in THAT?

    1. Impz, Maipeisu, Lelangir.
    2. Anime episodics and the occasional editorials.
    3. I suppose THAT remains largely an anime episodic blog so I would like to see coverage by different authors of different series for different seasons…but that might be a pain in the ass for quite a few of them. :\

  2. Posted December 23, 2008 at 9:07 am | Permalink

    1. Crusader, Impz
    2. Angry Crusader posts, season previews
    3. Please keep up with the yearly blogosphere history posts!

  3. Posted December 23, 2008 at 9:40 am | Permalink

Damn we brought you most hits 2nd after RC? O_O; Wow go figure lol.

If there’s one thing I love to do on coming home after a long, tough day, it’s ranking a few espada over dinner.

    1. Crusader and Lelangir, I suppose
    2. Consistency?

Also, grown-up Nanoha and Fate are superior.

    1. Whoever is writing something interesting at the moment. I tend to skip posts on shows I don’t follow, like Code Geass, Macross, etc etc. Honestly, I don’t look very closely at who’s written the posts, though lately I know Impz has been writing about Skip Beat a lot, which is one of my favorite shows right now.

    2. What do you like most about THAT?
The many perspectives. If I’m not currently following the same shows Crusader is writing about, I can expect someone else to write about something that I am interested about. The previews are great, also.

    3. What do you hope to see more often in THAT?
Less episode rehash, more editorial. How about something like a “season recap”? Go back to the shows in your preview, which lived up to the hype, which surprised you, where and how did hyped show falter, how soon did you drop certain shows, etc. Which should we absolutely pick up if we haven’t already?

    1. Crusader, Impz
I actually know THAT from Crusader’s Macross Frontier posts. I really like his humors but unfortunately I’m not typical mecha fans ><” (I only watch Escaflowne and Macross Frontier as my mecha series) but I hope we’ll cross each other again in other future series.

    2. I like it that the writers of THAT blog (mostly) make a post in mature way, with no bias. If you’re making stupid comment, you always know and state right now that you are. Also, the fun and jokes you guys added in your posts. I read some blogs that the writers talking too much rubbish or become overwhelm with their fandom of favorite character, that it makes me feel like I’m reading a post from a kid or very young teenager (maybe it really is).

    3. The speed of posting? Actually it’s not bad but the pace has been slower lately, but I’m kind of guess you guys might be busy as it’s approaching New Year and the world is crazy right now. Other than that, please try not to drop the series if it’s not too painful for you to write. It’d be nice if you have more variety of series, but that also means recruiting and more headache stuffs :P

    1. Impz, and reverse vampire
    2. It’s refreshing and you get different point of views of anime, it isn’t just the same person over and over again, also it’s funny =D
    3. That T.H.A.T will grow to be the popular-est blog around, lol. When in reality you already are in my books.

    1-Crusade, Impz, Calawain
2- The humor, great reviews, awesome team. My favorite blog I like it more than darkmirage or random curiosity
3-Probably try to keep a regular schedule, I haven’t seen an tytania or Index post for ages :S .
Also to Crusader, I love your reviews but chill out man, your posts are so big that sometimes scare me O.O

    1. Crusader and Calawain
    2. The tasteful in-post pictures. Some of them are really great! And the G00 in-character introductory paragraphs are just fun.
    3. I dunno, though. Just started reading this blog for just a month. I’m more inclined to just say: keep up the good work!

    1. Really anyone who is covering a series that I am currently watching.

    2. I like the amount of series you people cover, they are pretty in-depth and usually entertaining. The editorials that take looks at specific things like character traits etc are always welcome and a nice diversion when there isn’t really anything going on series-wise.

    3. I’d stay id like you to keep up with series. It sucks when you drop a series for whatever reason, but for the most part you guys are great. Best blog I frequent, keep up the good work.

  12. Cherubium

    1. Crusader Maipeisu, Impz

    2. The fact that when you posts comments, the authors reply in their own quirky ways and it’s fun to read a commentor arguing with the author about one small difference in their opinion. As well as Crusader telling all those shippers that they were TROLLED in Macross F.

    3. This is impossible to ask, but I don’t like it when some new author appears and then disappears after some time.

Calawain, Impz, Crusader, and Maipeisu when doing Natsume Yuujunchou

    2. What do you like most about THAT?
Funny, scathing episode commentary (like many, I loved the coverage of Code Geass)

    3. What do you hope to see more often in THAT?
Funny, scathing episode commentary, coverage of Anime Cons, pictures like the one at the top of this post… seriously, what the hell is Haruhi doing in Gaza?

    3. Same as what other people said: Keep up the good work.

    1. I look at the post, not the blogger. But I pretty much like Impz and Crusader of THAT.
    2. Impz’s attitude and that he pretty much has the same opinions as me. I like the way some bloggers (or is it just Impz? Meh, whatever) make fun of some scenes, and that not every post is about episodes, but there are also random stuff not related directly to any episode…like this post.

    3. May I ask for PVs? Trailers in the season preview? Apart from that, you’re doing great. Keep up the great work, Merry Christmas and New Year.

I must say I really like the format you did your yearly report, seems… rather professional, lol.
    Anyway to answer your questions:

    1. N/A, because I’m not a blogger.

    2. What I mostly enjoy and why I keep coming back to THAT is because how one can usually expect at least 1 new entry daily (mainly because there are more than 1 writer here) and the different yet interesting opinions/views/voices due the the different people who work behind THAT. I also enjoy the sometimes random topics that I would not normally think of but are actually quite interesting when I read it.

    3. I hope you guys continue do the previews using a similar format you currently use in the future, because I think it’s a lot of fun. I also enjoy the “Top 10″ lists espeically for OP/ED because it helps share music that people who do not watch the show but will still enjoy. I also enjoyed learning the different and unique small bits of anime/manga subculture that would not get any limelight.
Plus, I liked the “Request a Topic” you guys did before, mainly because I had several that I would’ve really really liked to know the opinions of the THAT bloggers.
Lastly, I hope to see more female voices at THAT because as a female I tend to enjoy topics related (?).

Can’t really think of anything more at the moment (it’s 2am!), but might add some more bits later… (if you guys don’t mind)

Frickkk, what happened to the edit button? (no offense, but I also hope you guys plan to install a proper BBcode/html toolbar sometime in the future…)

Anyway, being as sleepy as I was, I totally mis-read question #1 as something else. So here is my answer.

    1. I don’t particularly follow any bloggers, just topics that may seem interesting or ones with interesting pictures. I also like it if the voice seems “fresh” or funny. However, the ones I do avoid, mainly because of differing tastes, are ones with immense ecchi and yuri and the like.

oohh, never thought all that THAT link whoring will earn us to that top10 spot XD

looking at the comments make me want to say “ehh, no love for Luppy?!”

    1. Lupus, Crusader, and Impz.
    2. Editorials, “tag team posts”
    3. Following after Kabitzin. Live up to your Historian persona, Impz! :D

  24. Posted December 24, 2008 at 8:42 am | Permalink

Sob, no one cares about me, especially when I’m temporary leaving THAT for almost a year… Boo Hoo Hoo, guess you guys don’t want me in here, right? Ne, ne??

    1. I don’t necessarily follow bloggers but more like shows so right now that would have to be Impz with Skip Beat and Hakushaku to Yousei but also lelangir for his thought-provoking posts
    2. I don’t really know… the layout’s pretty? lol I like that you guys have a lot of pictures in your blogs (I’m usually too lazy to use them) and you guys have different and interesting ‘voices’.
    3. … I don’t really have anything to say but maybe more polls? lol

    1. Impz (I like shoujo), Crusader (He’s hot XD), and Reverse vampire (I like her writing style, but unfortunately I’ve lost interest in Vampire Knight… hopefully she’ll take on something else when she returns? =O)
    2. Easy to remember website. Hur hur, I’m kidding. I wish the background was darker… White hurts my eyes. XD
    3. Impz! I wish you would give briefer episode summaries and more of your thoughts on the episodes of skip beat. Interesting to read what you guys think rather than “Ren did this, then Kyoko did that…” And more collaboration with Sugar pls! Basically, more collaborations overall. (Force Crusader to watch skipbeat. Haha XD )

  29. Posted December 25, 2008 at 9:10 am | Permalink

    1) Crusader; because he has similar interests to me yet has an entirely different approach when talking about it. Impz; because he’s hot. Calawain; show dependent.

    2) Does summaries, editorials and doesn’t afraid of anything.

    3) Lolis.
