Chrome Shelled Regios – Yay or Nay?

LQ is terrible. HQ onry prz.

In my desperate search to find a show I could write about this winter season, I’ve come across this show and decided to give it a “why not?” try.

What the hell is this show about?

Ooo, pretty.

Honestly, it was kind of hard to tell what was actually going on in the show based on the first two episodes. So far the story seems to involve giant bugs terrorizing encapsulated colonies in a giant barren wasteland. A guy named Layfon (I think that’s how you spell it?) appears with a couple other guys and starts attacking the giant bug with pretty lights and colors. Anyways, it appears this Layfon guy gets sent to some school in another colony for some reason and he’s apparently bitter about the whole situation and doesn’t want to use his powers anymore. But of course, various situations causes him to reluctantly unleash his hidden talents (didn’t see that coming) which awes the crowd. Layfon gets assigned to a military platoon and stuff goes on from there.

What do I think of the show so far?

Gotta love those random names they come up with for attacks.

Between all the crap that’s going on and the OP sequence, I’m really not sure if this is going to be strictly a school-life thing with a bunch of action going on the side or if there’s actually going to be some major bug squashing going on. I really don’t care either way since the story seems to be a bunch of blah anyways. Seeing as how I consider this show to be one of those mindless action shows you can just enjoy without having to think about much anything, I consider the more action this show has the better. Some people may not like all the flashy lights and overpowered crap going on but it has a fairly nostalgic feeling for me which I somewhat enjoy. Growing up watching shows like Yoroiden Samurai Trooper will do that to you I suppose.

Nina: He’s also mah bitch.

The characters are super generic and I’m pretty sure you can find and exact copy of each one in some other anime. The obvious example is Mr. Layfon a.k.a. Suzaku “Jesus” Yamato. As long as he doesn’t start spitting out morals or goes all emo and crap I can be cool with his character since it’s always fun to watch those scenes where he goes and WTFPWN’s everyone in sight.

Meishen: OMIGOSH! Thanks for saving me!
Layfon: All in a day’s work, babe. That’ll be $12.50 by the way.

There’s also a high harem alert for our lovable main character. This is apparent even in episode one where he gets a farewell kiss from some chick and then he goes to save another one in the next few minutes. Not only that, he has a loli-looking character (she’s actually older than him if I’m not mistaken) and a tough captain lady looking after him as well. Of course, this is far from the main point of the show (or is it?).

Final Verdict

Haven’t I seen that pose before somewhere?

Weeeell… I’ll watch it for the mindless action/fighting but as for blogging it? That’s probably yet to be decided. So far, it’s looking like a no go unless I get a fair amount of positive feedback for the show (which I doubt will happen but who knows). So what do you guys think?

Wow, that’s pretty much exactly how I felt after watching the first two episodes. As you say, if there’s a decent focus on the action and Layfon doesn’t emo out, I’ll probably stick around and enjoy it. I’m not sure I felt that much of a Suzaku vibe from him, in that he’s all about an ideal of justice, but I could certainly see him revealing that side of himself eventually. It’s also kinda hard to tell where the story is going overall. Is it going to focus more on the schools/colonies fighting amongst each other or is it more of a school vs. those weird bugs? Either way, if it has some good fight sequences, I might be able to swallow whatever stupid plot they eventually go with.

Yeah, well. Besides the shitty techno music they use, I actually like the show and the characters a good bit. Generic mustn´t be bad, after all, it always depends on the mix. OTOH, the action is a bit iffy sometimes.

I´d say blog it, because at the moment it seems that Crusader is carrying the blog all by himself ( I mean, seriously, four shows? ). I guess the story will get better later on, when we know the background of what is happening with all the characters *outside* the school setting.

    Like you said, I’ll be watching this for the action since there are hardly any action in the other animes I’m watching (Munto is debateable to some extent) but also like you said, there’s nothing new from this anime thus far so I’m leaving the blogging for this episode to my fellow blogger. I say that you should blog it until the main character becomes too annoying for us to care anymore. ^^;;

i would say, just go after it, as long as you don’t have to force yourself

even if its crap there should be always something to blog about.
    bad anime ≠ bad posts/comments/impressions
e.g. some animes are only watchable becouse of the comments made on them

Except for the silver-haired girl (not bothered remembering names yet), this show is a bunch of blah. The dude throws away a cute girlfriend because he wants to ‘start over again.’ >.< And then there’s the end of episode 2 — lol @ shitty clichéd noncommunitive emotional bitchy girls.
I’ll stick it out for another episode, but I doubt it’ll get much better.

    @ JadeMatrix

Actually it’s more complex than that. He did not just throw away his girlfriend because he wants to start over again.

The good thing though is that if I remember correctly, he’s never really much of an emo. He’s somewhat emotionless sometimes or rather he does not show it much.

One more thing. Lol, if I was in one of those position those girls were in, I guess I will be a bitchy guy then so I can understand them. The problem is that he was holding back when fighting Nina and she end up hurting him and then worrying a lot about him. Concerning Felli, I rather not say yet since it might spoil things.

Seriously, I could not figure out the show in the first episode either. Other than being left confused, the music was…weird, throughout the show. Then they went and did that generic funny drawing in episode 1 when he got swarmed by the girls, and I was like, nah.

  9. Posted January 23, 2009 at 11:04 pm | Permalink

@Nazarielle: I only compare Layfon to Suzaku because of their abnormal physical abilities. Also, I can handle dumb plot as long as there’s something else to pay attention to (comedy, action, etc).

@magnuskn: Yeah that techno music was kind “WTF” at first but I’m getting used to it. The action is okay, it’s not amazing choreographed shit but it’s still fun to watch in it’s own sense. Crusader has been taking up a lot of series indeed… I only hope to be able to contribute my share of at least a show to blog.

@Minnie: Thanks for the input. I’ll take that into consideration.

    @Adi: Well put.

@JadeMatrix: I’m going to give it another episode before I decide to stick with it as well. So far it hasn’t been that bad for me but it’s still kind of sketchy.

@Silver: Felli’s situation is fairly clear for me. I dunno if it’s because I read up on the manga a little bit before hand or not but I think it was pretty clear through the conversation they had before why she’s angry with him.

@Panther: Some of the comedy parts were a bit off in the first episode, but I think it got better in episode two. That being said, I could see this show improving little by little each episode and potentially being not so bad after all.

It took me a while to understand it as well. Only when I realised that that scared silver haired boy in the armored transporter of the first episode is the school president did it start to make sense.
It’s a nice show if you want to see action undisturbed by a serious plot and some of their antics are quite funny.
The music wasn’t that weird in my opinion, it was what you find in typical post apocalyptical cyber punk. You find similar music in shows like Armitage, Akira and so on.

I think I am actually going to go with nay here. The low quality and bugs for a main theme look neither attractive, nor entertaining.

Just take time out to enjoy this one. Not much to say, as it isn’t particularly stand-out in terms of anything.

    Also, ACTION FTW.

By following the manga (I didn’t read the novels) the story and main character’s background were briefly mentioned, but may provide a tad more insight for those confused by the anime so far.

The show reminded me of Mushi-Uta, but your Suzaku and Yamato concept might come into play. In manga, he’s all emo or angsty. He’s laughing away his cares, but he is still deadly. (Is that like Trigun? Trinity Blood? Samurai X?)

With all the bright lights from the attacks and a main dude who doesn’t know he’s “getting some” from the ladies, I think you’ll have fun blogging it to stray away from the “bigger melons” and drama like “Asu no Yoichi”.

They continue to jump around between scenes in episode three. I don’t know manga or novel, but the anime certainly progresses as if someone was wildly mixing a dozen half-baked ideas of as many genres and the next episode seems to do the same. In that aspect it reminds me kinda of Scry-ed.

P.S. I haven’t ever heard a japanese person speak proper english in an anime, but even for japanese standards those guys are really bad at it.

P.P.S. Fonfon’s gotta be the most retarded nickname of a hero to date.

It wasn’t bad, but I sure hope the guy lives up to Suzaku’s uber speed hax kick’s shadow. Ep 3 came out and the ending engrish was just….rofls… I wonder why they put in engrish at all? Hah

Isn’t it obvious lol? They put it in for laughs! That ending scene was just plain out of place, I actually thought it was a different show, but then I realized that the girl looked similar to that girl from Ririn’s consciousness. Seriously though, I can’t see any reason why they bother making it engrish but for comedy reasons in the first place lol, since this episode seemed to lack on that aspect, until the last part where I just couldnt hold back my laughter. It’s frikin hilarious! I watched the series raw, but I actually needed english subs to fully understand and get what they were saying in engrish, lol!

From what i can tell, they’re going for points of flashbacks to help flesh out the story in a non-linear way, but they’re doing it in the most awkward way possible, making things feel very out of place and confusing. Its only from reading a bit about the back story did the last scene of episode 3 make sense. The some of character’s feel generic, but that’s not completely a bad thing, at least for now. I’ll keep a look out on this one, because it has potential if they can put everything together right by the time its finished.

Just saw all 10eps and really love wat they have going with this anime.Unlike others that have to much dialogue and not enough action. This one has alot of action and i guess thats wat got me watching this anime in the first place.I hope it sticks around for a while even though they release like one ep every now and then.

Watched the final episode…. If they make a new series – second part, I think it would be better… for the whole series, you’ll be left the feeling of “there must be more to it than this” kind of thought. The main characters real abilities is only shown on the last episode, and the other characters did not get much air time. The anime’s OK, worth watching while waiting for the release of other anime :)
