Valkyria Chronicles – 05: Alicia's First Blood Part II

You know being an E-5 is a magical time the first time, enough rank to get things done, but not enough to take full responsibility when things really go wrong.

Well it certainly appears as if real tactics will be sparse, but in terms of the game at least it seems that the staff at least did their homework and looked at the gameplay so again in that sense it works. I like how they added Wendy to the roster though if you did get elite shocktroopers you will know how weird it is seeing Edy and Rosie in close proximity. While they added one lancer it’s still rather sad that for whatever reason (animation budget, most likely) that they have not put more effort into character designs or actually trying to use classes other than one lone lancer, scouts, and shocktroops. I could have used a lot less Faldio and Ramal though, still just like in the game it seems that Imp snipers really can’t shoot for shit to save their lives, personally I never had luck with Imp Sniper Rifles since range is pathetic and it’s really accuracy that matters. I do like how they used cover though clumping up is in this universe a good idea for combined attacks since that’s how supporting fire works. (Calawain has finals today and tomorrow wish the poor guy luck)

Welcome to the jungle we have fun and games…

Personally I would have preferred something more similar to the actual mission that it was based on since I would have been most amused if Jane “Kill ‘em All” Turner was gleefully shooting Imps in the back. Nevertheless I simply adore Alicia’s funny faces and Rambo Alicia was fairly enjoyable. I agree about the fear and nervousness thing, though like Captain Speirs said you might as well believe you are already dead. They really hinted a lot about future developments at that cost of special tanks (Lupus and Edelweiss) duking it out, but at least they kept Hans from being the weepy little creature that he is I think they were better off just keeping the hold some shit routine. I still think Hans should be named Ham but whatever. I like how Alicia nearly dinged Jaeger in the face while the guy was gawking at her. Next ep looks to be a filler though I suppose Jann is going to be a barrel full of laughs and Ellet is going to show some cleavage. Alicia will make even more funny faces, and it seems Edy, Suzie, and Aisha (yeah the 12 year old shocktrooper is in on it too) are going to get all gussied up, one can hope that a decent amount of budget will be allocated.

In terms of actual military wisdom though in that moment there was no reason not to pursue though Welkin did at least discern that his busting in was all too easy and that he didn’t really kick the shit out of the Imps and send them packing. Rather being cautious was probably a good thing since, if Jaeger is all they make him out to be, Squad 7 would have just chased him right into a kill zone of Jaeger’s choosing. They really are pushing Gregor as an incompetent hack since he was supposed to be elsewhere and getting flanked should have raised some flags with him if he really was worth is rations. I bet Rommel and Patton would be howling mad at Welkin, but Squad 7 ain’t exactly the Third Army or the Afrika Korps, hell I’d have problems sending in a bunch of militia on a going fastest and farthest mission. Mostly since they only have one tank and they have no halftracks, so it be less like Rommel running Frendendall to the ground at Kasserine and probably would have been more like Manstein crushing Popov’s Mobile Group at the Third Battle of Kharkov. Ah well let the good times roll.

Musings about the Game

I think Alicia needs to start sporting a combat knife.

Since there was a game to this I might as well try and talk about the game, unless no one really cares or everyone has beaten the game already.

As for the mission itself I ran Claudia, Alicia, Marina, and Aisha with Edelweiss while Largo, Ramsey, Rosie, and Jane were going to do the flanking. I had to go one group at time while trying to preserve command points in the case of the flanking force while inching up Marina into a good sniping position to ding two lancers. Edelweiss was an excellent decoy that was not too hard for Claudia to repair. I decided to not nip the forward position in the rear and went all the way to the side gate on the base while I used Edelweiss to blast out the medium tank and from the front angle, and stormed the camp. I sent Alicia to recon that AT gun that was over looking the base only to find that it was all by itself, I tell ya aiming for the back of the head execution style never got old for me. Over running the camp was a bit tougher I had to park Edelweiss to block Lupus (special tank shows up later) from intercepting my shocktroops as they crossed open ground. The last camp was more challenging though being able to boost defense on the first one in to lob grenades made things easier. Otherwise I tossed four grenades in all to blow them out of their sandbags. I wasn’t able to blow out Lupus but managed to blow out the treads though it made no difference.

In terms of play style I usually poured experience points into Shocktroops because they are my bread and butter units, with Scouts and Snipers as a second priority, Engineers third (mostly because leveling them up is cheap), and Lancers last since I didn’t use them much in the early turns. Scouts have good range for interception fire, but with a properly placed shocktrooper you can gun down plenty more imps dumb enough to run into to the cone of death. Counterattacking is also much more lethal to Imps so long as you use cover. For upgrades I always upgraded body armor, SMGs, Grenades, and Rifles (in that order). I usually upgraded HP on Edelweiss first before doing firepower upgrades and mortar capacity. I didn’t even bother with radiator upgrades since I was usually able to back Edelwiess into a protected position. I am interested in how other people played since I was real shocktrooper heavy and didn’t really use scouts until I got them to level 11 and got grenade launchers, which are lovely by the way.

More Screen Caps

Show us proof of injury and you get to be SIQ.

Let Hans eat it…

It’s no worse than your pet pig…

You have no idea…

You can tell by the trail of droppings.

Alright they added Wendy “Bomber” Cheslock.

But first let’s roast the pig.

Because you did not make Sergeant Major yet…

No wonder why Alicia gets along with Hans so well…

Let’s be honest now scouts are the first ones in…

I am surprised Largo can not only keep up, but he’s the head of the pack.

Murdock Gregor I am coming for you…

Yeah shut the fuck up Faldio.

You to shouta.

Alicia doesn’t like Ramal either.

It’s your lot in life sadly…

You just have to accept that fact that you’re already dead…

Were you shooting at me?

Poor Edy gets minimal budget.

I like your use of cover, but I hate your stance there Oscar. I suppose that is why you couldn’t hit a damn thing as a sniper.

Clearly Gergor had never heard of Agincourt.

I hope Wendy has a custom demolition chargefor every occasion.

Yeah Imp snipers are terrible, good hitting power, but really what’s the point if accuracy sucks for you one shot weapon?

There’s courage and then there is Alicia’s courage…

Of course Faldio is not ready…

Best uniform EVAR.

All your base belong to us.

Alicia is better than Faldy, Alicia is stronger, Alicia is faster, Alicia is better than Faldy.

It’s your fault for throwing your lot with a Prince who has no interest in women…

Yeah she can shoot too.

I could’ve killed them all. I could’ve killed you. In your camp, you’re the law. Out here, it’s me. Don’t push it. Don’t push it, I’ll give you a war you won’t believe. Let it go. Let it go…

Hey wasn’t there supposed to be some sort of elite tank over here?

At least he realized that he did not kick enough ass to make them run.

Sure I’d love me a roast pig at the tend of hostilities.

You make her nuts…

Eh just feed Welklin’s stuff to Hans, Hans will eat anything.

Yes the 12 year old is in on it too.

Yes you let a 12 year old volunteer to be a shocktrooper.

I share Alicia’s mistrust of reporters.

Wait how do you unlock this in the game?

Thank you for being honest.

This episode was just fucking retarded. I don’t usually like to judge anything, I just watch it, but somehow this pissed me off like nothing else… Let me see:
It’s war… They found a delicious looking pig and didn’t eat it? WTF…
Second, their discipline is below that of trained dogs… You get an order, you execute it and STFU, not argue. Nevermind the talk between Fallo and Alicia when the other squad was under fire…No, they just had to talk there for like 5 minutes about nothing…
Third, she got a SCRATCH, goddamit…Oh, NO, it’s a scratch, are you okay, I think you’re gonna die, says Fallo… What a pitiful excuse for a soldier (also, the designer of the battle uniform must’ve been drunk. Either that or they don’t have money for different uniforms for different situations). I broke my arm twice and exercised while being sick (simple flu, but still), while eating shitty food that the piece of crap armed forces in my country gave me (not that I’m complaining, I think it was good survival training ;-).
And the end… Ok, so maybe Alicia couldn’t shoot straight to the head of that idiot who was just standing there (the one who gave the order to retreat), but 5 soldiers shooting at a standing target like 30 bullets and not even scratching her? I could’ve done better while eating a hamburger and watching a movie on my phone, :-)…
Don’t know why I expected some good military action, the previous episodes seemed better to me. /END

Ellet would do anything for a story. Also, Wendy looks a lot meaner in the game.

Yes but in game Alicia would have cleared the season within episode 1’s 23 minutes.

Rambo as a cute girl with a lot of funny expressions = Alicia lol.

On the other hand, the battle failed big time. Although intelligent military tactics would be too much to ask, can we at least get something that’s half-plausible? Well, I suppose seeing everyone failing at war is good for lulz.

What!? Another Vakyria blog and yet still no new Mazinger entry? For shame!

As for the mission, I have Rosie and Largo (or Jan if I’m feeling mean) do the flanking, pushing Rosie up the far norther path while having Largo swing through the nearer path by the lake so that he can stick a rocket up the tanks ass (hence the aforementioned use of Jan when feeling mean). Meanwhile I have the Edelweiss accompanied only by Marina who takes out the Lancers and bring in an Engineer (Dallas + yuri comments = win!) only after I capture first camp. The only tough part is sneaking Rosie past the Lupus (who the heck names a tank after a disease?) so that she can lob a few grenades into the base for a cap. It gets easier in the skirmish version of the mission (where there’s no Lupus, only a medium tank) which I use for grinding in the earlier levels.

And yes, the super sol…shocktroopers are alwas first priority in terms of experience. However, ever since Barius, I’ve tended put snipers 2nd before scouts so it’s easier to get those difficult shots off (I’ve had Marina take out a tank in one shot with the help of an attack buff order). Also, I’ve stuffed the Edelweiss with all manner of accuracy upgrades, nothing beats one-shotting a tank at max distance.

P.S. Anyone else notice that Gregor’s cap is made by BMW?

Yeah it certainly isn’t war though they at least are remaining fairly true to the game on which it was based on, which by the way is a great turn based game. They are only militia and are only ever going to be mildly military at best.

Still didn’t they teach you the basics of hopping off a Seven-ton? ;) That’s where I see a lot of people get hurt these days. IF you ignore the realism and accept it as a game adaptation I think you will be better off. These days they just quarantine you after the corpsman gives his blessing otherwise you get light duty for broken limbs.

Yeah I think making Alicia the principle character was one of the better decisions they made.

I can thing of 3-4 ways to interpret First Blood, though I trust you didn’t think of anything…unseemly, yes? ;)

Dang I should have tried harder to withhold information then. Everyone looks a lot better in the game, may be eventually character animation will get better.

    Not without Jane she wouldn’t.

As a game it works as for realism it think that went out the door when they put a 88 Long on Panzer III chassis with autoloader…

    Still Alicia only gets tougher…

Yeah, no wonder why he couldn’t hit.

Gimme a break I am getting to it, sheesh I was just high off of just finishing the game for crying out loud.

I got more utility out of scouts with their grenade launchers mostly since I only ever really need one sniper and one back up sniper. Early on snipers aren’t so great until you really get the needed accuracy levels. Also since i always upgraded grenades it was usually more efficient to blast out clusters of imps since they weren’t always standing out in the open and they aren’t dodgeable.

@Crusader: “I think Alicia needs to start sporting a combat knife”

    Bayonet, dude, bayonet…

I won’t even comment on the lack of fire and movement in here, even a grease monkey E-4 could have led a squad better than that. And how the heck is a standard battle rifle able to one-shot a sniper, when the said sniper can’t even shoot straight?

Also agree on the acquisition of the emergency food supply, unless it’s a trick of the Imperials by spreading H1N1 among the Gallians.

    Squad 1 are a real sausage-fest, aren’t they?

  11. Posted May 6, 2009 at 7:31 pm | Permalink

    Dude a Ka-Bar is not a bayonet…

I think there are plenty of M-14 enthusiasts who would argue that one shot is all you really need… ;)

I guess they just don’t eat pigs because they aren’t kosher…

  12. Kherubim
    Posted May 6, 2009 at 8:30 pm | Permalink

@Crusader: Hey, you guys get the OKC-3S bayonet, which is as close as it gets to a Ka-Bar you can stick on a rifle (I know, it’s not from the actual Ka-Bar company). Those of us in less well funded reserves are still stuck with the old M7s. A knife of the Fairbairn-Sykes type still loses out in the open against a bayonet for reasons of reach.

As for battle rifle versus sniper rifle, I was referring to something like a stock M14 versus an M25, guess having a tricked out Mk14 EBR is useless if the shooter can’t shoot straight (refer to Simo Hayha for sniping with iron sights).

Pig, the tastiest of meat!!! Now with extra wings that taste like chicken!!!

BTW Crusader, is the DLC for the game worth the money? I got the EU version of Valkyria Chronicles but the SGD to Euro exchange rate makes me leery of spending money on stuff which could be the equivalent of Oblivion’s horse armor…

  13. Posted May 6, 2009 at 9:01 pm | Permalink

I am a bit old fashioned I still love the Ka-Bar even if it is technically obsolete.

Well I just finished Edy’s detachment it’s some nice fluff and it is a bit harder without orders and reserves. Still I feel motivated to unlock Lynn now. As a mission your dudes start out as elites with some pretty good weapons while the Imps come in wave after wave, I only lost once after an enemy scout popped out of their reserves and walked in to win. Otherwise it depends on how much you want to do a mission with no orders, no tank, one sniper (Marina), one engineer (Homer), one scout (Susie), one Lancer (Jann), and two shocktroopers (Lynn and Edy). For 5 USD it was worth it though you don’t get any exp or cash from playing, it had its moments though liking some of those guys really helps.

Wow, I know that the war part of the anime right now is not really realistic at all. However, it’s doing pretty good adapting the game so if you ignore the war part, the other parts or the actual main story, it’s pretty fun.

At first, when people were complaining about how the war part of the anime suck, I did not think too much about it but when some people start talking and explaining how they in real life did this and that and therefore the anime make them mad and what not, it seems to me that some of them wants to be seem more gar or something and uses this as a way to show.

I think the question on the minds of those of us who are complaining about the war bit is “shouldn’t an anime based on a strategy game at least show some proper strategy (or tactics)?”

Your only one I know who’s blogging Shin Mazinger, so I get paranoid when a couple of episodes go by with no blog post.

    Posted May 7, 2009 at 2:56 am | Permalink

@d3v: The question could also be “If doing something in a tactical RPG gets you mauled in game, why are your characters allowed to get away with it in the anime adaptation???”

The main saving grace of this show is Inoue Marina’s voice work, heck I think the studio requested a “Minami Kana goes to war” take on anime-Alicia. Next week we might see her do a Kyoko impression as well…

winged pig huh? Emergency food source FTW! you get pork AND chicken wings in one package.

srs edy looks lovely, as does srs alicia, though the snipers on both sides were noobs, your supposed to lead your shots when shooting at moving targets dammit!

    @ dan

i don’t know about you, but methinks if a bullet passes closes enough to you that it breaks the skin and draws blood, it’s gonna hurt, i mean look at all the nasty cuts and scratches that are inflicted by shrapnel? not to mention there’s always risk of infection

The commenters bring up a great point about ham + chicken wings. No wonder Welkin was all like OMFGWTFBBQ when he saw Hans.

When Alicia said she always healed fast, I was expecting some Wolverine type regeneration, so needless to say, I was disappointed.

Indeed few series based on games are going to be jaw droppingly real.

In the context of the game it works, then you have to realize that the game is also turn based…

I’ll try getting on that on Friday, things have been rather busy.

Indeed it is more fun as Kana Goes to War. Also it seems the Selvaria DLC is blatant otaku pandering for Selvaria fans, though you do get her MG42 upon completion. In that sense it’s 5 USD for the best shocktrooper gun in existence.

Indeed ribs and wings in a single animal…mmm tasty.

    Alicia is BOSS!

In the game all it translates to is Alicia regaining all her hit points.

In the context of the game however, wouldn’t it have worked better if it was Rosie who went rambo seeing as she’s a super soldier… I mean shocktrooper (which is actually how I play that mission).

Moving aside from the BS that is this show, Im more suprised that Jihad-kun hasn’t made one of his divine intervention with gundam 00hax yet. Like c’mon WTH is celestial being doing while this war is going on. innovators my ass, No wonder Prince Ali choose to die than to live with those losers.

Also I agree, That is one hell of a uniform, Canadian and US forces should change all female attire to TINY MINI-SKIRTS!!!

Interesting characters: Jaeger, Faldio and that’s all.
I like Alicia only when she isn’t talking and is doing her job as a soldier.
This episode was boring, but we have found out that Alicia is a Valkyria and that Jaeger is going to be a problem in the future. The episode is still boring.

I used Jane as the point man, by war’s end I am sure she had the highest kill count.

This is just really Kana goes to war, as Kana is BOSS she kicked Jihad-kun out.

    Faldio? Really?

Gregor needs to tell Jaeger to get off his lawn and pay rent. ;)

How does the idea of Kana goes to war sound to you? In any case LOGH this ain’t, though if you did read up on WWII you might have some fun with it.
