Canaan 01: Girls + Guns + Mild Levels of Yuri = WIN

Biggest Non-Mecha Fight of the Season.

As PA Works second major project (after the much loved True Tears) it certainly has gone off with a mighty bang, it looks like they came to play.  It seems that PA Works can also do action sequences in addition to animating festivals. I am not sure of what exactly is going on (probably has something to do with a drug that can create artificial synthesists), but the action is all there and I suppose that is what most people will be watching it for. I like how despite the over the top the gun fu is that they take the time to animate a magazine change. Even if this isn’t billed as yuri there is enough female bonding and female arch-rivalry to make it seems as though yuri is oozing out periodically. One thing I want to mention though is how they treated their dystopia, it looks like a decent enough place to live but the willful ignorance of the populace to all the killing and bodies speaks just as powerfully if not more so than a physical waste land. My only complaint is that Canaan was using a semi-automatic sniper rifle, though in all fairness it’s really a matter of personal taste in weaponry. Still this shit was AWESOME.

BOOM Headshot.

Cool Finger Paint!

Ah here comes the moonwalk.

Ah the Yuri Eye…

Dude do you have the same tattoo artist as Prince Ali?

Hakko is HAWT too.

Well they do give free samples at Ben and Jerry’s too…

Liang Qi likes to feel her sister, I assume it’s Alphard.

Still hawt when wet…

Oh is this like Uhura’s fan dance?

Hooray for PA Works festivals.

It’s almost like I am watching the last episode of True Tears again…OH SHI-

Purple RAIN!

Your brain on Meth…

Oh a yuri dayto…

Oh Canaan you shouldn’t have…

Getting attention…

She’s like Shen Hua with thigh highs…

Totally worth it right?

despite SYNESTHESIA NOT WORKING THAT WAY, everything else was just so goddamn awesome i decided to not give a fuck

P.A. Works will keep the audience at the edge of their seats with its plot twists and cliffhangers only to have Canaan pick Maria over Alphard by the end of the series despite having hinted at the latter’s Good End several instances throughout.

It’s not like I’m still bitter or anything.

It’s episode one and Maria has already gotten on my nerves. She’s so much like an epitome of all of the mannerisms I hate in female characters it’s not even funny.

Loved the action and the uber-ability invoking sequence, but that’s pretty much it.

@Shin: wow, that ending I do not approve of.

LOL, they’re using synesthesia as some kind of super power gimmick/affliction. This is just fine as a conceit.

I better get new yuri glasses. i didn’t get even a scent of yuri in this show. but i guess considering 90% of the characters are female there’s always the winsome possibility…

    awaiting ep 02 nervously..

“I like how despite the over the top the gun fu is that they take the time to animate a magazine change.”

Are we talking about Equilibrium-like Gun Fu a/k/a Gun Kata?

Anyway…..Long time no read. I’ve been missing my Mazinger fix care of Crusader’s awesome reviews. ;)

I suppose so long as everything else is in place that we can over look the small blemishes.

Look at it this was either way if it turns out yuri most of us probably won’t care. Besides if that happens then we can get AlphardxLiang Qi…

Hopefully this is going to be a big action series and thus we shall see more of Canaan, Alphard, and Liang Qi as they are the fighters.

Hey it does allow for super cool action sequences…those hardly need justification, just smooth animation.

Indeed between Liang Qi’s little spiel on feeling her sister and Canaan tying up Maria…well I think we have plenty to work with here.

Will do a Mazinger Z post later today after they upped their arsenal.

Almost I suppose it’s harder to draw it than simply film some props.

    BEST of Season.

Noe won in the end I just know it.

HAHA omg that True Tears parallel is so awesome. All the girls seem to know how to fly and land in this show, though.

Yeah, i’ve waited long for the anime and now it’s finally here; LOVE IT :D

I haven’t seen True Tears yet (despite Stripey’s pestering) but might well do if Canaan is a blast.

Not really sure about the yuri yet, mainly because I find Maria’s spaceyness kinda of irritating.

  14. Posted July 10, 2009 at 8:20 pm | Permalink

The bonus is that there doesn’t seem to be a Shinichiro, though there might be one Nobuse…

I suppose this was then end that Noe spoke of…where people get to fly with Raigomaru.

It was four kinds of AWESOME.

Forget the air head, Liang Qi is the one to watch…besides we are at 5/6 on the hawt otome scale. Even Canaan’s megane handler was smoking…

How can you not like Liang Qi who also has a love of onee-samas?

Since when did the ability to see sound or taste colors result in super-hax eyes of instant destruction?

I’ve got it on my watch list because of moe photographer Maria and Liang Qi (voiced by Gin-sama no less)…

Also heard in episode 2, a Jouji Nakata voiced character shows up (almost like they got nearly the entire Rakkyo cast)…

Wow. Is this from the same creators of Claymore? The body animation is surprisingly similiar!

Nope. P.A works had nothing to do with Claymore, and the character designs are by Type Moon’s artist.
