Durarara!! Episode 5 – Monsters, Aliens and Gangs

This week’s narrator is magnificent Kida-kun himself. As Mikado is getting more curious about the Dollars, Kida becomes more and more worried that Mikado will fall to the darkness of the city. Kida also crosses a few punks who claim to be from a colors gang called the Yellow Scarves.

Other events include Celty performing another delivery job while getting attacked by a mysterious slasher. Celty is troubled by this after hearing voice coming out from her wound given to her by the slasher. It was rather interesting to see Celty have this human side to her when she was bothered that she was called a monster and was afraid that the slasher was some sort of alien (I thought it made her a little cute).

We also learn more about Anri’s past relationship with the missing Mika. The two used to hang out with each other all the time in middle school, but that obviously ended when Mika went on a supposed “trip” to ease her pain. It turns out that Mika was someone who was stalking Seiji Yagiri but was rejected. What’s still unknown is who is that girl Seiji is with now and why she looks so similar to Mika (since she apparently isn’t Mika according to Anri or Mikado). Anri said she ran for class representative in order to surpass Mika since it was something Mika always wanted to do but that she felt that her decision was a bit unfair. After telling her story, Mikado said it was the right thing for her to do but that she shouldn’t tell people that it was unfair since it’s like she’s asking for forgiveness. Mikado shows a bit of brutal honesty here which was unexpected and made me respect him a little bit more.

We also get introduced to a bedridden girl who apparently is related to Kida and is acquainted with Orihara. Whether this girl is a relative of Kida’s or is a friend/past girlfriend is still unknown. However, given Kida’s tone during the narration and his attitude towards color gangs and the Dollars in the city, Kida is probably bitter at them for something that happened between them and got the girl involved possibly. Orihara probably saved Kida from the gangs or something.

Not much else to say about this episode. I feel that these posts are getting shorter and shorter. The next episode better have something more to write about! ><

amazing episode, left me with more questions than answers…
i really have to think about the significance of the revelations and connections in this type of story

its hinted at that Kida was once involved with the gangs, but i am starting to wonder how deeply involved he was… and also how involved the otaku are as well.

I also love how raw mikado is. whether its due to his innocence, or is he actually aligned closer towards the chaotic/evil side that he appears

by the way… i was under the impression mikado was the one on the computer, but its seamt like kida this time. I’m kinda confused now.

The chatroom scenes always confuse me. The voice for each person seems to change with every episode. In this episode, however, it seems that “Setton” might be Celty since he/she talks about aliens and how he/she isn’t afraid of them. But the masculine voice wouldn’t really make sense if it was Celty… so I dunno.

It seems there are two slashers:
    - The first one who attacked Certy was with short hair and short skirt and remind of Anri;
    - The second one who attacked the Yellow scarves was with long hair and long skirt and reminded of Haruna.

Who was the chatroom spammer who looked for the strong human and ended it with ” that’s why” ?

Now that you mention it, it does seem like there’s two slashers given the different appearances, or perhaps the slasher can change forms or something. The chatroom spammer might’ve been that girl on the laptop, Haruna, who was briefly shown towards the end of the episode. She appears to be related to that scruffy looking reporter guy. Also, Haruna has a similar appearance to the long haired slasher so they might be related as well.

10 bucks says Kida was the leader of the Yellow Scarves. He at least had to be part of some gang for Izaya to ask the bedridden girl about him with such familiarity.

    Wow, this show is fantastic.

I’m not sure if he was actually the leader of the Yellow Scarves or even in the Yellow Scarves. What we can assume though is that he had some involvement in the color gangs (maybe a rival gang or something) and he’s now trying to keep Mikado away from them.

Hmm interesting choice of hoodie in the cellphone photo Kida-kun…

I didn’t notice that at first. It’s obviously not the same white colored hoodie he always wears but what color is it exactly (I’m partially color blind)?

      • Posted February 8, 2010 at 1:26 am | Permalink

Yellow hoodie. Which answers a lot about Kida and his encounter with the darker side of the city.

I have more or less figured out who everyone in the chatroom is by now (they dropped a lot of hints in this episode for Setton). The voices change as the narrator for that particular episode will voice the conversation. I guess they did not want to make it that easy for people to figure out.

I figured Tarou Tanaka was Mikado based on the first episode. I’m guessing Kanra might be someone very knowledgeable but eccentric like Orihara or maybe Shinra.

    @Shokkeru: the hoodie is yellow-orange-brownish.

Thanks, I figured it was close to Yellow, but it was hard to tell for me. Curse my genes!

    In case you missed it…

    - The girl that’s in the hospital can see Kida out on the street, but Kida apparently hasn’t had the courage to actually go in and visit
    - I would guess that Kida was heavily involved with the Yellow Scarves. Either part of it, got involved with it, or got in to conflict with them. But with him directly challenging those Yellow Scarves member with no fear, disdainful looks, and conveniently showing up at the mention of their leader leaving, I would be forced to assume that Kida was directly involved somehow.
    - Nasujima (teacher hitting on Anri) is also the one that was chased by Celty. Another story line there hopefully. Also with the short introduction of Haruna (the rumored girl that went out with the teacher), there really should be a story there. But I guess their story isn’t too important due to them not being in the opening.

I knew about the part where Kida was outside the hospital, but the girl said to Orihara that “he visits me from time to time” with “he” being Kida I’m assuming. Therefore, I didn’t think that meant he didn’t actually go up to the room and see her (since she could just be calling his stops outside the hospital as “visiting”).

I thought the guy with the suitcase looked a lot like the teacher, but they made no obvious connections between the two other than the similar appearance. Because of that, I held back from saying that they were in fact the same person. I also didn’t make the connection that the Haruna on the laptop was the same Haruna who supposedly went out with Mr. Sexy-Harasho.

There seems to be quite a few characters appearing that don’t make it onto the beginning OP sequence, the writer who is related to Haruna for example. This happened in Baccano! as well with characters like Rachel or Vino (although Vino did appear in the OP just without a name). We could be seeing a lot more of these characters despite their absence from the OP sequence.

Loved this episode, Kida’s narration was very entertaining and had an interesting perspective as somewhat of an outside insider to the goings on in Ikebukoro. Lots of cool little touches too, like the green tea being drunk out of Russian-style tea glasses in the Russian sushi shop, the way the different events came together to explain the part at the beginning where Kida and Mikado start running, and the freeze-frame of Mikado as Kida jumped at him with the Kida voiceover. I swear, the director for Durarara must be a big Guy Richie fan, hehe.

It seems like they’re beginning to use a non-linear form of story-telling again (which was shown a little bit in the previous episode) like they did a lot in Baccano!, a show that I probably would have been very confused with if I didn’t marathon it all the way through. I also like their attention to detail from the style of their clothing to the subtle things like the Russian-style glasses as you’ve pointed out.

“I swear, the director for Durarara must be a big Guy Richie fan, hehe.”
Yeah, absolutely… So now I’m waiting an anime director who’s a fan of Paul Greengrass

    In case you didn’t notice:
-Chatroom conversations are all voiced by the narrator, a bit confusing for those that are not fluent with Jp, if the kanji of the chatroom ID arenot translated by the subber. So, kudos for Shinra’s VA, using altogether different voices for each ID.
-The ones who have been included in the chatroom are Tanaka Taro (Mikado), Setton (Celty), and Kanra (Izaya) – I think these three are quite obvious until this episode. Saika is the one included in this episode.
-In ep. 1, in the chatroom, Tanaka Taro is very particular on the Dotachin person that Kanra mentioned. Notice that Tanaka Taro always asks question, and Kanra is the one that knows everything. Kadota, everyone?
-The chatroom works with an admin in charge – in this case, Kanra. Saika was banned by Kanra, so that means he invited Saika to the chatroom in the first place. So, why the two of them, Setton and Tanaka Taro, were invited by Kanra?
-This one is very subtle – in ep. 3, in the clash between Shizuo and Izaya, in the chatroom afterwards, how did Tanaka Taro (that is, Mikado) know that the self-proclaimed Dollars gang are fake? He was trying to convince Kanra that they are fake.
-Aside from that, I think Anri and Haruna connection is quite obvious, after this episode… The first slasher is, possibly Anri (from the silhouette), second one is Haruna. Two slashers with similar sword.
-And.. notice as well that the guy Celty cornered in the beginining is Nishijima-sensei (or something, forgot that lecher’s name), the teacher that approached Anri.
-”Mr. Shiki from Awakusu” >> appeared three times already.. first is the old man that Shizuo extorted in ep. 1 is from Awakusu company. 2nd, Celty’s jobs are from them, asking her to deliver the briefcases back. 3rd, in the chatroom, when Dollars was mentioned in the first time (there is one person asking whether Shiki from Awakusu company financed them).
-Oh, and from the preview and past 5 episodes, I think it’s quite obvious that Kadota, Yumasaki, Walker, and Togusa are Dollars.
