Durarara!! Episode 6 – Dollars, yo!

Probably the best scene of the episode.

Happy Lunar New Year to you all (and Valentine’s Day but screw that commercial holiday! …I’m not bitter… not at all. >.>).

This episode clears up a lot of the mysteries present in the previous episodes. We get a glimpse of who the Dollars are, who the hell “Dotachin” is and who those three kidnappers were and how they’re related to Namie Yagiri (the female doctor). However, despite the negative connotations the Dollars had before this episode, we see something much less threatening and rather humorous in a sense.

Kadota, a.k.a. Dotachin, ans his buddies are all apparently part of a mysterious organization called the Dollars. They are a loosely knit group with none of the members knowing who the leader actually is. However, it is speculated that the leader is none other than Izaya Orihara himself. What the purpose of the Dollars is still unknown even to it’s members since there are no rules or restrictions. The members must simply state that they’re part of the Dollars.

We start off with Togusa, Kadota, Karisawa, and Yumasaki  involved in a car chase with the three kidnappers from the first episode. It turns out that the kidnappers work for a medical company by delivering them humans for experimentation. This company, Yagiri Pharmacy, is where Seiji’s sister, Namie, works… hence the name. What is involved with the human experimentation is yet to be revealed however.

This all came together when the kidnappers took Kaztano, a friend of our four heroes and especially Togusa. The group eventually find the kidnappers and save Kaztano from being a human experiment and find out the location of Yagiri Pharmacy. Not much else happens in this episode, but at least some light has been shed on who everyone is exactly.

Geez there girls are everywhere, aren’t they?

Celty is really into aliens…

These two always seemed kind of quirky but I didn’t expect them to be a bit sadistic. Of course, they could just be joking… I hope.

Looks kind of like Haruhi…

Overall, a great episode. I had some laughs with all of the Dollars’ antics and Shizuo randomly throwing crap out of no where. And like I’ve said before, it’s finally nice to get some information out of this show even though a lot of it could have been speculated from previous episodes. It seems like next episode we learn more about Shizuo and his past with Izaya. Can’t wait for more vending machine action!

At the time of this writing, Shokkeru was very hungry with all the images of sushi…

LOL, yes, they keep showing up, but WTH are they doing here? This is supposed to be some dump shared by foreigners isn’t it?

Now that we know who Dotachin is, does that mean that the person Mikado was chatting with in episode 1 (the one who 1st used name Dotachin & says he also saw the black motorcycle) was Izaya? He saw Celty (revealed episode 2) and came up with name Dotachin (revealed episode 6).

Well since they’re there, that could only mean that they, themselves, are illegal immigrants.

It’s been speculated that Tarou Tanaka is Mikado, Setton is Celty and Kanra is Izaya. With all of the hints so far, I think it’s pretty obvious who the chat room members are.

Sadistic hmm. The manga has the torture scene with much details (chapter 7). Either the two are quite crazy or the group is just good at scaring people.(I think it’s the second possibility.) (Their methods were quite creative, I would have talked too.)

Was the torture scene in the manga this same incident? I would kind of like to see the extent of their sadistic nature of these odd characters.

Yup. You can read it on onemanga. In the end the guy gives up before they actually harm him and in most stories I would interpret it as a scare tactic since they belong to the “good guys”(let a third person interrupt them before they actually do it so that it seems like they would have done it), but based on baccano the author doesn’t have a problem with making characters a bit crazy without making them one of the antagonists (rail tracer). Additionally they would have to be very good actors to pretend to be cheerfully sadistic without being it.

It’s an informative and funny episode. I like it.
    My guess who chatters are:
    * the blue one – it’s obvious – Mikado – the who moved to the Ikebukuro and have lots of questions
    * the grey one – ALIENS – Celty
    * the yellow one – Izaya – the one who is good for getting information, the one who gave the nickname Dotachin

@lilu: “grey one” — Aah! That does fit several things, but isn’t Grey the one who volunteers that the black rider has no head? Why would Celty do that?

Possibly to hide her identity or simply to humor herself with the rumor.

Yes, she is trying to hide her identity.

No, they’re not. I suggest reading the manga.

I figured. The only reason I thought they might be joking is because of their perky personalities.

It’s was a great episode, really explored the characters and laid out the possible storyline that connects everyone. (other than the 50% off Russian sushi of course)

    Some questions in my mind…

    – Why was Dotachin’s group chosen to be part of Dollars? Random? Judged to be a good fit for Dollars?
    – Who makes the decision to invite new people in? Only the un-seen leader? Top leadership of Dollars? Any members of the Dollars can invite others in?
    – Purpose of the Dollars website, what do they use it for? Chatting? Planning?
    – Dotachin’s group’s relation to Celty. Don’t think that they have the money to pay for Celty’s services, so I’m assuming a friendly relationship. Didn’t sound like calling in a favor either.

Great set up for future episodes. Can’t wait.

I’m guessing Izaya (assuming he really is the leader of the Dollars) is the one inviting people to join the Dollars. What his purpose is with forming the group is anyone’s guess at this point. The website, from what I’ve seen, was simply a roster of every Dollars member. With this, members could probably form groups with other members in the local area (how Dotachin’s group was probably formed).

Funny how the Dollars are pretty much just a webring.

My impression was that Dotachin’s group was already formed before they got the invitation to join Dollars. Need to watch it again to make sure.

If the Dollars site is a listing of contact information, that would explain how Dotachin called Celty to help out. But I’m not willing to bet that Celty is a Dollars member, not yet at least.

Based on what Kaztano said ‘Un poco’, it’s actually ‘A little’ in Italian. So, probably Kaztano’s Italian.
And love the first picture. My favourite part of the episode too.

After watching episode 7, I’m kind of doubtful about Izaya being the leader of Dollars. He’s definitely an informant with different kinds of ‘privileged’ information; however, Dollars seems more of a troubleshooter gang on the positive side. Of course, it’s too early to form opinions but whoever the leader is, definitely going to be a surprise.

Re: The chatters, there is further evidence of Kanra=Izaya in the events of Episode 3: In Ep.1 he suggests meeting Tarou (Mikado) IRL, and in Ep.3 he says “I came to meet someone (Looks at Mikado) and I did”. Izaya seems like the only one who knows his fellow chatters, except perhaps Celty knowing Izaya. Also, I don’t think it was Setton who said the black rider had no head – she said it was “an ugly rumor” (after all, she has a head, she just doesn’t know where it is).

Re: Izaya and Dollars, it’s hard to see where he stands… In the chat logs of Ep. 3, Kanra seems to be polling Tarou to see what his opinion of them is, and later he’s pushing the “Dollars are scary, dangerous, and evil” shtick – which might be to his advantage if he leads them.

Finally, regarding the Dollars, there might be a hint on the website. For those of us who can work Japanese-cellphone-magic (don’t curse me!), try the image at http://www.durarara.com/login/ (password is “bukuro”). I have no idea what the actual content is…

    Owata! \(^o^)/
