T.H.A.T. Spring 2010 Anime Preview

Welcome to THAT’s spring 2010 season preview! All information comes from ANN, MAL, and/or Wikipedia synopsis, images from the same in most cases. Sequel series have been omitted since what could be a better season preview that one or more entire previous seasons? (with the except of K-ON season 2 since I know at least one blogger here is interested in blogging it.)

A Message from the NKVD: Well its time once again to point out this is a preview, and not a review. That “p” makes a difference a very big difference in fact. On another note many of us are old grouchy mean spirited cynics and not wide eyed idealistic fat cat communist NEETs. If you are part of the “animu is SRSfkn business” part of the fandom do yourself a favor and just read the summary from ANN so you can preserve your fragile optimism for your harem animu. Other than that Liberty Prime is watching and ready to initiate directive 7395, destroy all communists.

Angel Beats

Animation Studio: P.A. Works (True Tears, Canaan)
Website: http://www.angelbeats.jp/
Available Trailers: Trailer 1.
Source: Key visual novel adaptation.
Summary: In a world after death, angels fight for their fate and their future. Yuri, the leader of the Shinda Sekai Sensen, rebels against the god who destined her to have an unreasonable life. On the otherhand, Tenshi, the chairperson of the student council for the world after death, battles against the SSS members. SSS members utilize armed weaponry to battle it out against the angels harnessing supernatural powers.

Writers’ Commentary
Calawain: PA Works is definitely an A-grade studio in terms of quality of work, and I’m pretty much willing to watch anything they create. Add that to the fact that it’s a Key adaptation (not by KyoAni, how unusual~) is a big plus on top of that. Oh yeah, and I dig anything where the chicks have weaponry.
Crusader: Well the lead heroine is named Yuri and Canaan did prove that someone at PA works loves small arms and Gunkata. Haven’t seen a Key story that was out and out bad. Perhaps the stars are aligned this time for them to stop being an Ace of One. Will do Recon.
ExecutiveOtaku: 75% chance I’m not going to be into this, but it is P.A. Works and I am curious enough to try at least one episode.
Impz: Yuri is the name of the main character. HAHAHAHAHA! Honestly, I know PA works has good quality stuff but with my insufficient time to spare, it’s impossible to catch this show.
Reverse Vampire: One word: Decent. I’ll see how everything turns out. A little disappointed with CANAAN last year. (Story-wise, animation is superb)
Shokkeru: Is it just me or do these characters look too much like Haruhi characters?

Possible Bloggers: Crusader

Arakawa Under the Bridge

Animation Studio: SHAFT (Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, Dance in the Vampire Bund, Hidamari Sketch)
Website: http://www.starchild.co.jp/special/arakawa_ub/
Available Trailers: (none yet)
Source: Manga adaptation.
Summary: The story is about the strange courtship of a successful executive in life called Kou and a mysterious woman called Nino who lives under a bridge. It all begins when Kou almost drowns in a river but is saved by Nino. For saving his life, Kou fulfills Nino’s desire to have a boyfriend. Thus, Kou becomes her boyfriend, but has to live with her under the bridge…

Writers’ Commentary
Calawain: I’m so over SHAFT. Too many shows at once with too many drops in quality.
Crusader: Knowing SHAFT I have my doubts this is about social commentary about how we treat poor people, probably not going to blog it since the temptation is to mock it by ranting about homelessness.
ExecutiveOtaku: Many shows this season are difficult to get a read on from the previews, this being first among them. Difficult to say at this point, though SHAFT has earned my loyalty and thus I will check out the first three episodes, at least.
Impz: This looks like a very nice romance series, but since SHAFT is doing it, I might just check it out. I have lately become even more of a sucker toward quirky romance series.
Reverse Vampire: Nay. Shinbo needs to take a break, NOW! Working on so many series last year must be tiring for him, and I have a feeling that anime bloggers are starting to hate him.
Shokkeru: Oh SHAFT… how great you are yet your latest escapades have slightly let me down. Dance in the Vampire Bund is going okay for now, but I feel slightly underwhelmed by it so far. Oh well.

Kaichou wa Maid Sama

Animation Studio: J.C. Staff (Shagukan no Shana, To Aru Kagaku no Railgun, Toradora!)
Website: http://www.tbs.co.jp/anime/maidsama/
Available Trailers: Link 1
Source: Manga Adaptation
Summary:The romantic comedy centres on the student council head named Misaki Ayuzawa who despises the mostly male, slovenly population at her school, which was once an all-boys school. However, Misaki’s most handsome schoolmate just discovered her secret — that she works after school at a maid café.

Writers’ Commentary
Calawain: Talented seiyuu cast such as tsundere specialist Ayumi Fujimura and the lovely Kana Ueda can’t save shoujo nonsense.
Crusader: The things people do for money… Ah well I’ll let RV deal with it.
ExecutiveOtaku: Meh, sounds a little too much like Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu for my tastes. Will pass unless it pulls a Baka to Test to Shokanjyuu and manages to rise above its weak premise.
Impz: I Kyaa-ed to death reading this. DEFINITELY WATCHING THIS!
Reverse Vampire: Ahh…a friend recommend me this a few months back, but while reading the later chapters the jokes are kinda used over and over. There’s no place for the manga-ka for creativity, as it seems that 60% of its content are ripped off from Japan’s otaku culture, though I did enjoy the earlier parts of it. I’ll see the first episode first before I decide whether to pick it up or not. We shall see.
Shokkeru: Steering clear of this one.

Possible Bloggers: Reverse Vampire

B Gata H Kei

Animation Studio: Hal Film Maker (Aria, Skip Beat)
Website: http://www.bgata-hkei.com/
Available Trailers: (none yet)
Source: Manga Adaptation
Summary: Yamada is a virgin high school student who dreams of having 100 casual sex partners. However, she ends up targeting and pursuing only one boy.

Writers’ Commentary
Calawain: One of the most retarded story premises I’ve seen in a long time, rivaling the idiocy of Chu-bra. For Christ’s sake.
Crusader: I like Aria and Skip Beat but WTF? 100 little play things eh? Maybe we should call her Ms. Chamberlain.
ExecutiveOtaku: When hell freezes over. And maybe not even then.
Impz: Lol. Let me guess. Possibly tons of fanservice, very lame plot, emo girl going …what should I do, what should I do? Kill yourself, that’s what you should do.
Reverse Vampire: It’s just a shoujo version of pr0n. ‘Nuff said.
Shokkeru: Uh… what?

Possible Bloggers:

Giant Killing

Animation Studio: Studio DEEN (Seitokai no Ichizon, Fate/stay night, Hetalia)
Website: http://www9.nhk.or.jp/anime/giantkilling/
Available Trailers: (none yet)
Source: Manga Adaptation
Summary: In Giant Killing a ragtag bunch from East Tokyo are struggling in Japan’s top football (real football, a.k.a. soccer) league. The team is going through an abysmal spell right now where they are nearing the bottom of the table and have lost 5 matches in a row. The losses haven’t done much to team morale, because it was already low. Fan support, on the other hand, is looking bleak. In the world of football, once the fans turn on a team the end is near. Teams don’t recover. Coaches are fired, players are sold, and teams drop to smaller divisions where profits often prevent them from ever being successful against even mediocre top division programs. East Tokyo United, ETU, can only blame their coach right now. And Coach is ready to give up this next game to prove to his team and fans, that against the biggest club in the nation he can make this team against the odds.

Writers’ Commentary
Calawain: I usually don’t care for sports anime, but then I remember shows like Bamboo Blade and even Saki (regardless of whether mahjong is a sport, it followed the sport anime format), so maybe I’ll give it a whirl.
Crusader: I don’t do sports anime despite being a fan of American Football. Still probably going to be right up someone else’s alley just not mine…
ExecutiveOtaku: While I like to play soccer, I don’t really follow or watch sports so this one probably isn’t for me. However it sounds like it could be pretty cool if you’re into sports anime.
Impz: Definitely going for this. I like soccer, and I like an underdog’s story. Now that I read the first two books of this series, I am going for this. It’s hardly an original concept by any measure, but I found that the characters are quite distinctive. I hope they stay that way rather than becoming compliant boring characters.
Reverse Vampire: Kill. Kill. Kill. Kill. Kill. Kill. Kill.
Shokkeru: Do not like sports anime and I’m not changing my opinion now.

Possible Bloggers:

Heroman

Animation Studio: BONES (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Tokyo Magnitude 8.0)
Website: http://www.square-enix.com/jp/anime/ (actual page not up yet, link goes to main SE anime site)
Available Trailers: (none yet)
Source: Manga Adaptation
Summary: The story will center on a boy named Joey who discovers a toy robot near the west coast of the United States. Then, the toy becomes Hero Man, a giant robot that Joey pilots against evil threats.

Writers’ Commentary
Calawain: Captain America is a vastly superior ass-kicker decked out in the stars and stripes. Then again Bones makes good shit. Oh yeah, and Stan Lee is collaborating with Bones on this, and yes that is the Stan Lee who co-created X-Men and Spiderman. Potential for awesome shit is high.
Crusader: When I asked for mecha I didn’t mean this… Well at least there will be more Gundam Unicorn down the line and the VOTOMS OVA. Unless that thing is out to Liberate Alaska and telling people that “Democracy is non-negotiable” I’ll pass.
ExecutiveOtaku: *facepalm.* I really thought this was a joke or some sort of Team America-style spoof. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem that way, so unless the robot constantly yells things like “democracy is truth, communism is death!” I’ll pass.
Impz: …LOL at @E.Otaku’s comment. I actually got the reference, which means my ps3 addiction is pretty darn deep. For this show though, I really don’t think so, better dead than red.
Reverse Vampire: Read the first few chapters online. Meh, the characters are rather stereotypical. (Save for the cheerleader whose name I’m too lazy to check, she doesn’t seem very American to me.)
Shokkeru: Hells yes I’m watching this. Not only is it BONES, but I’m willing to bet this show will be full of lulz (intentional or not).

Possible Bloggers:

House of Five Leaves

Animation Studio: Manglobe (Samurai Champloo, Ergo Proxy)
Website: http://www.goyou-anime.jp/
Available Trailers: Trailer 1.
Source: Manga Adaptation
Summary: Masterless samurai Akitsu Masanosuke is a skilled and loyal swordsman, but his naïve, diffident nature has time and again caused him to be let go by the lords who have employed him. Hungry and desperate, he becomes a bodyguard for Yaichi, the charismatic leader of a gang called “Five Leaves.” Although disturbed by the gang’s sinister activities, Masa begins to suspect that Yaichi’s motivations are not what they seem. And despite his misgivings, the deeper he’s drawn into the world of the Five Leaves, the more he finds himself fascinated by these devious, mysterious outlaws.

Writers’ Commentary
Calawain: I’m often drawn to samurai material, although I’m at the same put off by unusual art styles. Sorry to say I’m pretty vanilla there.
Crusader: Looks interesting will watch but the posting team has already been assembled.
ExecutiveOtaku: Premise sounds cool, love the animation style, in the famous Noitamina timeslot, and Manglobe has a good track record with me. A bit too early to tell, but this one definitely has my attention. If it’s as cool as it looks I might blog it.
Impz: I like the story but I actually dislike the animation style. I will let E.Otaku deal with this because my superficial self will not allow animation styles that I do not like.
Reverse Vampire: Will want to blog. Can’t wait for first episode to be out.
Shokkeru: Don’t really like the character designs so I’ll pass on this one.

Possible Bloggers: ExecutiveOtaku, Reverse Vampire

Ichiban Ushiro no Dai Maou

Animation Studio: Artland (Tytania, Mushishi)
Website: http://www.mmv.co.jp/special/daimao/
Available Trailers: Trailer 1
Source: Light novel adaptation.
Summary: The story of “love, magic, and battles” revolves around Akuto Sai, a boy who aims to become part of his country’s highest order of magicians and contribute to society as one of its clergy. On the day he is admitted into the Constan Magical Academy, his aptitude test predicts the following: “Future Occupation … Devil King.” Thus begins his severe school life in which he is resented by his studious female class head, desired by a girl with mysterious powers, and guarded by a beautiful female android.

Writers’ Commentary
Calawain: Read the first couple of scanlated chapters, it was pretty amusing so I have some hope here. Lately there’s been quite a few good comedy light novel adaptations as well.
Crusader: Sounds like something that has been done before, not terribly interested. Taking evasive action.
ExecutiveOtaku: Shounen fighting anime set in a high school with tons of fanservice judging by that trailer. No thanks.
Impz: Harem crap. No thank you.
Reverse Vampire: Kinda thought about Index when I heard of it. Not interested.
Shokkeru: What is this? Nobunaga meets stereotypical harem? (Bad Devil Kings reference >.>)

K-ON season 2

Animation Studio: Kyoto Animation (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Lucky Star, Clannad)
Website: http://www.tbs.co.jp/anime/k-on/
Available Trailers: (none yet available.)
Source: Manga Adaptation
Summary: Season two of THE moe anime. Season 1 summary – It’s Yui Hirasawa’s first year in high school, and she’s eagerly searching for a club to join. At the same time, Ritsu Tainaka, a drummer, and her friend Mio Akiyama, a bassist, are desperately trying to save the school’s light music club, which is about to be disbanded due to lack of members. They manage to recruit Tsumugi Kotobuki to play the keyboard, meaning they only need one more member to get the club running again. Yui joins, thinking it will be an easy experience for her to play the castanets, the only instrument she knows. However, the other members think their new addition is actually a guitar prodigy…

Writers’ Commentary
Calawain: As much as I try to draw myself away I can’t not watch it. Too much moe Mio. DAMN YOU KYOANI.
Crusader: It is what it is, might as well finish the fight in between the long torturous waits for Unicorn and VOTOMS.
ExecutiveOtaku: Watched and enjoyed the first season, though I don’t think it deserves the wild popularity that it has. It will definitely fill my light comedy slot for the season. Not likely to blog it though.
Impz: Meh, not interested. Moe Blob bores me.
Reverse Vampire: Die moe blob, die…
Shokkeru: You know… I was really done with K-ON after the end of the first season, but now I might just check this out for the hell of it.

Possible Bloggers: Crusader

RAINBOW

Animation Studio: Madhouse (Dennou Coil, Death Note, Kaiba)
Website: http://www.ntv.co.jp/rainbow/
Available Trailers: (none yet available.)
Source: Manga Adaptation
Summary: Seven teenagers in 1955 have to learn to live together in the same hold in the reformatory of Shio. Confined in a hall where suffering and humiliation are daily, they are waiting for a ray of hope in a dark, incarcerating world. The story follows their life together and how they move on afterwards.

Writers’ Commentary
Calawain: I’m thinking this is more MSNBC’s Lockdown and less “don’t drop the soap” giggles. I could do for a gritty and violent show where men beat the shit out of each other for cigs and respect.
Crusader: I am pretty sure it was meant to be serious but I feel a strong temptation to poke fun at it as a Prison drama named Rainbow, and turn “humiliation” into innuendo…
ExecutiveOtaku: Sounds like a very cool premise, though how it’s handled will make or break it. I have heard good things about the manga though, so I’m giving it the three episode test. If it lives up to its promise in the summary I might blog it.
Impz: This seems like a very bleak series by any measure, but I don’t think my current lifestyle allows me to have such a serious outlook. I want my fluffy shoujo stuff.
Reverse Vampire: Never heard of it. Not my type of story, sorry.
Shokkeru: Eh, I don’t think so.

Possible Bloggers: ExecutiveOtaku

Senko no Night Raid

Animation Studio: A-1 Pictures (Kannagi, Kuroshitsuji, Valkyria Chronicles)
Website: http://www.1931.tv/
Available Trailers: Trailer 1
Source: Anime no Chikara timeslot original.
Summary: The story is set in Shanghai in 1931, when the Imperial Japanese Army has been dispatched to mainland China due to the relatively recent First Sino-Japanese War, Russo-Japanese War, and World War I. In this cosmopolitan city of intrigue, there is a special military spy organization called “Sakurai Kikan” that has since been buried in history.

Writers’ Commentary

Calawain: Hello ten foot pole.
Crusader: I smell a fucktastrophe in the making, it’s not like they’re terribly honest or frank about the early Showa period. Still wonder what historical fanfic they’ll try and pass off as the truth. If it goes into 1939 then they can tell us all how they beat Zhukov. LOL Japanese intelligence (sounds like an oxymoron) service, for the guys who had the worst OPSEC of all the major powers this going to be unintentionally funny. Their codes are secure! Their ambassador in Berlin isn’t giving away our intentions!
ExecutiveOtaku: My first reaction was ‘this is going to cause an international incident.’ Given that the protagonists are some sort of Japanese secret intelligence service I kind of doubt that this show is going to give a fair depiction of the time period. I would like to be pleasantly surprised about this though, and I’ll be giving it the three episode test since I love intrigue and the style and atmosphere of 1920′s and 1930′s Shanghai.
Reverse Vampire: Well, I’m looking forward of it since the Anime no Chikara timeslot is doing fairly well with Sora No Woto. Just have to make sure the story’s historically accurate and make as little mistakes as possible, as the timeline in this series is based on real events.
Shokkeru: Touchy subject that I’m not going to get involved in. See ya!

Kiss X Sis

Animation Studio: Feel (Jinki Extend.)
Website: http://www.starchild.co.jp/special/kiss_sis/
Available Trailers: (none yet available.)
Source: Manga Adaptation
Summary: Keita has two older step-sisters, Ako and Riko, but since they aren’t related by blood, they love him in a lustful way. After a mishap at school, Ako and Riko finally confess their love to him. Keita dislikes the thought of seeing them other then brother and sister, but as he tries to enter the same school as his sisters, he slowly becomes attracted to them.

Writers’ Commentary

Calawain: Somehow I find that reading the manga feels somewhat less dirty than watching the anime. However, I am not surprised that in light of today’s blatant pandering shows that this got the full TV treatment.
Crusader: Well I guess this promotional campaign revealed that they are disciples of the Zeke Full Frontal, sadly lack of mecha makes this a no go.
ExecutiveOtaku: Complete and utter crap from the looks of it, with incest to boot. If you watch this please identify yourself so when The Purges come my Purifier squads know where to find you. It’ll save us all a lot of time.
Impz: Please insert *random-insult-about-sexual-pandering-to-horny-lonely-anime-otaku*
Reverse Vampire: Incest? Sorry, too late, bye bye.
Shokkeru: Probably much more dangerous than the last entry… in it’s own sense.

Iron Man

Animation Studio: Madhouse (Dennou Coil, Death Note, Kaiba)
Website: (not yet available.)
Available Trailers: (none yet available.)
Source: Comic Book Adaptation
Summary: Madhouse has apparently been given free reign to re-imagine the classic American comic franchise. Tony Stark builds a damned near invincible robotic suit equipped with all kinds of weapons and systems, proceeds to start blowing things up. You get the picture.

Writers’ Commentary

Calawain: Two American superhero shows in one season? What is the world coming to? I’ll only watch it if they have Black Sabbath as the OP.
Crusader: This looks rather interesting though if they make Tony Stark under 18 with “problems” out the ass it won’t be a improvement. Certainly it looks impressive action wise. Still it is mecha… will do recon.
ExecutiveOtaku: While I’m not a fan of American comics for the most part, I’m willing to give it a try at least. Good animation studio and a license to dispense with all that tedious and often nonsensical US-comics canon ought to be a recipe for at least a decent show.
Impz: ~_~. I like Iron man but I am very skeptical when western stuff translates into Japanese anime. They never seem to work well. Probably not even getting close unless proven wrong.
Reverse Vampire: I’m no big fan of Marvel works, except for a few series such as Spiderman and X-Men, especially the more recent animated series.
Shokkeru: I AM IRONMAN… Naaaaah naaah na-na-na!

Working

Animation Studio: A-1 Pictures (Kannagi, Kuroshitsuji, Valkyria Chronicles)
Website: http://www.wagnaria.com/
Available Trailers: Trailer 1
Source: Manga Adaptation.
Summary: Set in a family restaurant in Hokkaido, the northern prefecture of Japan, 16 year old high school student Takanashi Souta works part-time along with his strange co-workers: Taneshima Popura, a high school girl who’s a year older than Souta who’s easily mistaken for a elementary/middle schooler, and Shirafuji Kyoko, the 28-year old store manager who doesn’t bother to do any work at all.

Writers’ Commentary

Calawain: A-1 continues to put out fairly solid material and we could have another possible Kannagi where the plot is secondary to great comedy. Add that to a solid voice cast and you’ve got me for a couple of episodes at least.
Crusader: Well it could be fun, after all being gainfully employed right now seems to be a fantasy in and of itself… Will do recon.
ExecutiveOtaku: Could be a fun, light-hearted comedy, though the preview seems to contain more than a few cliches. This one will depend on whether the cliches and archetypes will be used creatively or not. Three episode test for this one, very slight possibility of blogging should it turn out well.
Impz: I can’t decide based on the premise because it feels rather boring to be honest. If I have time, I might catch this.
Reverse Vampire: Reminds me of something; I should get a part-time job right after my exam (Music Theory) ends…
Shokkeru: This one could do well. I think I may check this one out just for the possible interesting character interactions alone.

Possible Bloggers:

Mayoi Neko Overrun

Animation Studio: AIC (Nyan Koi, Gun X Sword)
Website: http://www.patisserie-straycats.com/
Available Trailers: Trailer 1
Source: Light Novel Adaptation
Summary: The story revolves around Takumi Tsuzuki, a boy who lives with his older “sister” Otome, although the two have no blood ties between them. Otome manages a run-down confectionery store called Stray Cats. One day, Otome picks up a mysterious beautiful girl off the streets.

Writers’ Commentary

Calawain: The manga adaptation of this is being done by Kentaro Yabuki (To Love-Ru), and I was so distracted by his delicious art style that I have no idea what it was about or whether it has any redeeming qualities. Not sure if I can handle another lead role by Nobuhiko Okamoto, whose voice is rather grating.
Crusader: Nyooooo.
ExecutiveOtaku: AIC loves their cats, don’t they? You know, I had almost thought about giving this one a chance…until I got to the part about the sister not related by blood. Ugh.
Impz: Why do people waste time on lame fanservice-y stories. Oh wait…
Reverse Vampire: No cats, no cats. Why can’t they write anything about dogs?
Shokkeru: I’m allergic to cats… just kidding… not really.

Yojo-han Shinwa Taikei

Animation Studio: Madhouse (Dennou Coil, Death Note, Kaiba)
Website: http://noitamina.tv/yojouhan/
Available Trailers: Trailer 1
Source: Novel Adaptation
Summary: The story follows a nameless protagonist who is a third-year college student. The protagonist looks back at the earlier years of his college life and his adventures with a particular club.

Writers’ Commentary

Crusader:Well that was rather artsy.
ExecutiveOtaku: The other Noitamina timeslot show this season. Judging by the preview and info this will either be really amazing or a pretentious mess. I’m thinking the latter, but since it’s in the Noitamina bloc it automatically gets three episodes out of me.
Impz: Very very interesting. I have the same worry that it will become a pretentious mess. If only I can drag 13sugars to watch this with me…
Reverse Vampire: *Speechless* No, nothin’ to say.
Shokkeru: Looks like it would be a wild ride. Sadly, however, I’m just not up for it this time around.

Hakuouki

Animation Studio: Studio DEEN (Seitokai no Ichizon, Fate/stay Night, Hetalia)
Website: (not yet available.)
Available Trailers: PS2 Game Opening
Source: PS2 Otome Game Adaptation
Summary: The protagonist, Yukimura Chizuru is the daughter of a doctor who works in Edo. The father leaves Edo to work as a volunteer doctor and moves to Kyoto without his daughter. As time passes by, Chizuru starts worrying about losing contact with her father, so she decides to go to Kyoto in search of him. On the way, Chizuru is attacked by few criminals and witnesses a fight between an oni and the Shinsengumi. Taking her into custody and saving her, the Shinsengumi debate on what to do with Chizuru when they discover that she is the daughter of the doctor they are also looking for. So they decide to become Chizuru’s protectors and help her look for her father(the doctor). Lots of events happen while she stays with the Shingensumi, as they discover mysterious secrets and also fight against the Bakumatsu group. The story is overall romantic with a historical and political background.

Writers’ Commentary

Calawain: My apologies, my bishounen Shinsengumi quota is currently filled by Gintama. I’d probably watch it if it was more Kenshin and less sparkling pretty boys.
Crusader: LET’S DEFEND THE TOKUGAWA SHOGUNATE. I watched Saimono back in the day and liked it fine, will give this a chance if there is bloody sword fighting and and at least one guy committing Hara Kiri. Probably will end up mocking it to be honest.
ExecutiveOtaku: YES, THE SHINSENGUMI WERE PLEASANT BISHONEN GENTLEMEN! Fangirls, have at it, I’ll shed a single tear for the history being screwed with once more.
Impz: Please wait while I get sucked into watching this show by the evil 13sugars.
Reverse Vampire: Studio DEEN better not screw up anymore series. I’ll probably watch the first few episodes to see if I should blog it or drop it.
Shokkeru: I really tried to watch 07-Ghost but all the bishies killed my soul. I’m feeling the same vibes from this show (plus it’s even the same studio) so I think I’ve learned my lesson.

Uragiri no Boku no Namae wo Shitteiru

Animation Studio: J.C. Staff (Shagukan no Shana, To Aru Kagaku no Railgun, Toradora!)
Website: http://www.uraboku.jp/
Available Trailers: (none yet available.)
Source: Manga Adaptation
Summary: Sakurai Yuki is a mysterious boy with a mysterious ability. He was found in the bushes as a baby and adopted by his current family. Because of this, Yuki strives for independence. The last thing he wants is to be a burden to anybody. Furthermore, when he touches others, he can feel their emotions. Unable to control his ability, he often made insensitive blunders in the past. With death threats and his abilities increasing, what will happen when a man claiming to be his older brother appears?

Writers’ Commentary

Calawain: BL overwhelming! Where are you Liberty Prime?!
Crusader: Lack of intel, giving this a maybe but only because they did Railgun.
ExecutiveOtaku: Several shows this season are difficult to judge from previews. This is not one of them. Pass.
Reverse Vampire: I’ve read the first few chapters of Uraboku online. The translation’s a little off, but they better not make the story sound lame. Other than that the series has some potential.
Shokkeru: I think I wouldn’t miss much by passing on this one.

I thought HAL were doing Angel Beats? *double checks info on ANN* ah, I was wrong there. Actually that’s probably a good thing because P.A are pretty darn good an animating action scenes. Lets hope the plot doesn’t suck as badly as Canaan did.

Also, for a name like Rainbow, boy does that promo pic look badass

I thought Canaan was a pretty good action series, not sure how DEEP people wanted it to be.

It’s a Key adaptation so story shouldn’t be too much of a problem. If nothing else PA Works hasn’t botched animation in their two big projects they took the lead on.

I wonder if Under the Bridge‘s Nino will be a pyro with a thing for Kou’s older brother? And LMAO at “lack of mecha” being cited as Crusader’s primary reason for not watching KissXSis. There are a few shows that I’ll check out, but none of them really jump out at me this time around. Well, except for B Gata H Kei which I keep reading as BoHo. I get the Ho, but how does the Bo fit in? If only it were a trashy drama set in college….

Heroman has far too much of the Stars and Stripes for my taste. If Bones can pull that off without launching into the arena of tongue-n-cheek bad I’ll be surprised.

I agree, Yojo-han looks really pretty and if the story can back up all those visuals it’d fulfill my stuffy art-house quota for the season.

As always, thanks for the preview. Looking forward to watching Angel Beats, House of Five Leaves, RAINBOW, Senko no Night Raid, Working, Yojo-han Shinwa Taikei. Just a small complaint, this year the main voice actors were not listed. It was really helpful in the past when we had them all on one page instead of checking multiple pages to confirm the cast.
    Thanks again.

What are even the chances of getting Black Sabbath for the OP of Iron Man? It would be awesome if it did but for some reason i am really doubting it. Lets just hope I am wrong.

Well IMO this season is backed up with so much shit its like my toilet after a prune smoothie with some mini-wheat cereal. Seriously though theres nothing to watch I’d give:

    Ichiban Ushiro no Dai Maou
    Angel Beat
    Heroman
    Iron Man

A shot but anything else is a no go. Like seriously Mayoi Neko!!! gawd its just another harem but with some sort of cat orphan thingy ma bob. THE END IS NIGH! (anime end that is)

Not a bad line up of new shows looking forward to seeing more trailers on some of them first. Heroman sounds alright wondering what Stan Lee and Bones will do with it bet he makes a cameo appearance in anime form lol..also Iron man looking to see how that does too.

Thanks for the preview guys! Looks like I’ll have less new stuff to watch this spring than this past winter with Kimi ni Todoke ending… I hope the ending’s good :)

I’ll probably be trying out Angel Beats and Working. I’m also excited to see the new Darker Than Black OVA. The first one was pretty fantastic. Of course, I’ll be continuing to watch Katanagatari, but that’s only once a month.

I’m curious about Senko no Night Raid. I think it will either be unwatchable or terrific, and nothing in-between. The subject matter could make for an amazing show, but the tone has to be right, and the story has to be handled with a level of maturity. In other words, I’m hoping this is like Jin-Roh.

I’m really looking forward to Angel Beats, but Yojo-han Shinwa Taikei looks like it might be good as well. The rest don’t seem all that interesting.

Angel Beats: Wait, the Suzumiya lookalike, instead of being God, is now fighting the guy up there? With guns? Does this have anything to do with the winged race cursed by the gods too???

B Gata H Kei: A girl who wants the man meat of a 100 is usually called a slut… Meh…

Heroman: STAN LEE, EXCELSIOR, TRUE BELIEVERS!!! I guess the only way this will pass muster with Crusader and EO is if Heroman gets to punt a W80 special package into Red Square…

    K-ON 2: Ugghhhh too much moe… my nutbladder….

Rainbow: *snort*… looks and sounds like yaranaika…

Senko no Night Raid: More pro-Greater East Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere propaganda, I see. Yes, the great and noble intelligence service fighting for peace and freedom for the Emperor, with some incidental poisonings, stabbings, mass executions, the bubonic plague, etc. No hint of irony or sarcasm at all, yup yup…

Kiss X Sis: WHAT IS THIS I DON’T EVEN… *facepalm*

Iron Man: NO TO BISHONEN STARK NO TO BISHONEN STARK NO TO BISHONEN STARK NO TO BISHONEN STARK…. he’d better be a womanizing jerkass who makes me feel like he’s a cool exec with a heart of steel. Also Stark better have successfully privatised world peace…

Working: Uhh, is it bad if I think reminds me too much of K-ON and Sora no Woto? Slice of life where nothing really happens?

Mayoi Neko Overrun: A cat is fine too??? You can pick girls off the streets? Isn’t it called “nanpa” in some places???

Hakuouki: Reverse harem with a bishified Shinsengumi? Sorry, fail… Saitou Hajime from Rurouni Kenshin is more GAR than the entirety of this pretty boyband…

A girl who wants the man meat of a 100 is usually called a slut
      Bit old fashioned? Jealous? :D
We would call her a girl with a tight schedule :D. Getting 100 guys each only for one night is going to be really hard work if she wants to do it in the near future.
I don` t really mean the athletic part of it (it`s a marathon) but she needs a hunting ground too ^^.
And not every guy she finds, will be wiling to come along – so even with an error rate about 50% (which is very optimistic), she needs at least 200 guys around her age and attractive enough for her.
100 guys in her lifetime is not that difficult on the other hand … .

Well, this season’s looking a little more hopeful than the last one. At the very least, the shows are diversified (unlike last season, which was purely moetastic), and I’m hoping they won’t disappoint.

Under the Bridge shows a glimpse of promise, though I’m guessing it’ll be just another rom-com.
Giant Killing might be interesting; it’s nice to see that football’s finally getting a chance to shine. Hopefully, they’ll get their facts straight and actually make the portrayal of the sport accurate (like Bamboo Blade but without all the cutesiness).
House of Five Leaves? Interesting name, somewhat interesting premise, nice/simplistic art style, and most of all: it’s being produced by Manglobe.
Rainbow sounds pretty damned interesting, and I’m expecting a lot from it, as Madhouse rarely disappoints. I just hope it won’t be too emo-angsty (if ya know what i mean)
Yojo-han Shinwa Taikei also sounds interesting, but I’m really not expecting much from it. I’m a sucker for slice-of-lives, so maybe this’ll be the dark horse of the season and take me by surprise.
And Angel Beats? Honestly? PA Works, choose something that is actually interesting and let me know about it later. Only then will I give you credit as a promising company.

Angel Beat’s been growing on me. (Or actually the concept of Angel Beat) I was originally down on it, because of my distaste for Key’s previous stories, but this one looks like it could break from the harem melodrama routine. Or so I hope.

And what is up with the Siscon this season? I guess since it’s not really siscon that’s a little more passable, but… siscon, really? Gross. Like lactating power-up boobs.

That girl in Kaichou wa Maid Sama looks suspiciously like Lelouch from Code Geass…guess we know where he’s hiding now after faking his death (and spending some time in Katawa Shoujo).

“The story is set in Shanghai in 1931, when the Imperial Japanese Army has been dispatched to mainland China due to the relatively recent First Sino-Japanese War, Russo-Japanese War, and World War I.”

Help! Who wrote this summary, Tojo? Those three wars took place in 1894-5, 1904-5, and 1914-18, at least 13 years earlier! Yes, earlier wars led to the Sino-Japanese war, but…that’s a weird way to put it. I hope that’s just a crappily written summary and not deliberate sugarcoating of Japan’s land-grab as ‘peacekeeping’.

That one about the girl who wants 100 casual sex partners made me blink. Gotta catch em all!

I have to agree on the too much MOE part. MOE pandering is really becoming very dull lately, perhaps because of my major changes in taste. I never liked it in the first place, and now they are just detesting.

I like the Uraboku manga even though it is cheesy at times and the 80′s glam rock look does’nt really do it for me. I like Bishies though so perhaps I am biased.

I am interested in “House of Five Leaves” for the opposite reason. Although I like the art style the character design is more interesting than attractive, but I get a real sense of intrigue from the series that reminds me of a good horror movie.

Otherwise- Maid Sama, Angel Beats, Working and B Gata look like fun, Night Raid looks freaking awesome, Arakawa looks touching; and of the rest the only series I won’t go near are the incest/nekko/ecchi crapola.

In other words, summer is going to go by way to fast.

    Angel Beats

    I’ll probably preview the others.

Ehhh… I think you guys are a little mistaken about Arakawa Under the Bridge. If you’ve checked out the manga, it’s not really a romance, but more of a gag-comedy about about a bunch of eccentric and weird characters. You can check here for more info: http://shizmanga.blog54.fc2.com/blog-entry-3.html

That said, this season is totally shaping up better that I expected. I’m looking forward to:

Arakawa Under the Bridge (Seriously, this series couldn’t have picked a better company than SHAFT for their great ability for RANDOMNESS xD),
Kaichou wa Maid Sama (YESSS! About time!)
Hakuouki (I’m always up to at least checking out otome game adaptions, but I’m a little apprehensive due to Studio DEEN tendacy to screw up shoujo series Dx )
Uragiri no Boku no Namae wo Shitteiru (To be honest, I didn’t really enjoy the manga since it seems a little cliche and generic, here’s hoping the anime adaption will be better (*sigh* shoujo fan can’t really be too picky… -_-;;))

These look interesting, but unsure for now: House of Five Leaves, RAINBOW and maybe K-On! (but only checking out the OP/EDs)

(btw, just wondering, what happened to the lovely links you guys used to have at the top of the page linking to each new series? Thought they were pretty useful and missing them a little…)

I went with the ANN and MAL synopsis for it since those are generally accurate, not having read the manga myself.

Lack of links is my fault. I’m not the most technically adept person on here and didn’t know how to put links within a post (I use the visual editor instead of the html one. Heresy, I know). But I didn’t want our preview to be late like last season’s so I started writing it myself since I had more free time to do so. I’m all about Calawain resuming his writing of them for the next season, hehe, it takes a lot of time zipping between sites to confirm the studios, pick some of their past works, check for trailers, and find out what source they’re from.

Seems like quite a few series may catch my attention here… May have to let some potentially good series pass under my radar.

Just watched the first episode of Working!, and I still can’t get past the fact that they cast Daisuke Ono (Heiwajima Shizuo) and Hiroshi Kamiya (Izaya Orihara) together during/directly after Durarara – with similar personalities, no less.

    • Shokkeru
      Posted March 7, 2010 at 12:39 am | Permalink

The similarities between them are quite astonishing. I think Working! is going to be a pretty decent show for those of us who like slice-of-life series with interesting character interactions.

    - Kaichou : Yep I agree, the first half manga is actually decent and Ayukawa is imo the one of the most interesting tsundere I’ve ever seen.
    - Working was actually decent, saw the 1st episode and while it show many stereotype it still amusing to watch.
    - Seems Ichiban is the only Harem show this season… meh
    - Oh there is KissxSis, which by the looks of its OVA will be anything but good.
