Durarara!! Episode 14 – Whoosh!

I think I found my new favorite character.

Shingen Kishitani. Whenever this guy is on screen, he just makes me laugh my ass off. Something about his eccentric personality adds another whole level of comedy to this excellent show. He also seems to be much more dangerous than he lets on to be. Of course, not in the sense that he is physically dangerous, but he does seem to rival Izaya in terms of the wealth of information he has. However, there’s no way to tell how much these two really know.

We do learn a few important things in this episode even though one of the major mysteries was just dropped on us out of nowhere. Shingen is apparently the one who was responsible for stealing Celty’s head and gave it to Yagiri Pharmacy. He was able to do so with a sword called Saika which supposedly is able to cut through a person’s soul thus, Shingen was able to separate Celty from her head. This sword, Saika, is also related to the slashing incidents all over town (and the name of the spammer during the chat room scenes).

I love how Kida is always able to irritate the “sexy-harasho” teacher every time he tries to make a move on Anri. However, this time, Kida was able to make him break a sweat just by mentioning the name of Niekawa Haruna. If you remember from earlier, Haruna is a girl who was involved with Mr. Sexy-Harasho (possibly romantically) and resembled the slasher who attacked Celty. Perhaps, Mr. Sexy-Harasho had a run in with Haruna as the slasher or something like that.

Call me Father!

I’m really wondering if telling Celty he stole her head was an accident or not… I’m not convinced that he’s that clumsy with his secrets.

Shingen for president.

    Good question about whether Shingen intentionally let slip that he stole Celty’s head. He obviously knows more than he “accidentally” lets on, because he instantly heads over to Izaya’s office.

      Yeah and he already knows about what Izaya plans to do with Celty’s head. Of course, he could’ve just gotten all that information from Namie while waiting for Izaya to show up, but to get all that information with a toy gun is pretty impressive in itself.

    The Slasher is totally going to be that creepy daughter of the reporter, Haruna, who is also the girl who had to change schools because of Mr. Sexy-Harasho.

    One of the Slasher figures had long ass hair like her and she also was typing away rather furiously on her laptop in the one scene that we’ve seen of her. She’s like the only person left who’s been introduced in the series that hasn’t been touched on in any sort of depth yet.

    I also base part of this “revelation” on the fact that the next episode brings the reporter (her father) back into the picture.

      She’s a prime suspect to be the slasher, but there has been times where the “slasher” had a different appearance than Haruna’s. There was a time where she looked similar to Anri (short hair with school uniform) and if you watch the very end of this episode, the shadowy figure that appears behind Anri looks to have a coat and hat on similar to the reporter from previous episodes. However, I’m not so sure that this is the “slasher” since it didn’t have Saika but a knife instead.

        Weren’t they saying something about controlling souls or did I just make that up?

        There’s totally more than one slasher, but I think Haruna is the ringleader of them all. The slasher that got Celty looked like Anri. The creepy ass one that got the Yellow Scarves in the alleyway was probably Haruna.

          It is possible. I think I may have heard that from another source as well. It could be that the “main” slasher can spread the infection so to speak to other people… but I’m not sure how there could be multiple Saikas. Both the Anri-looking shadow and the Haruna-looking shadow both had a katana and those events seemed to have happened around the same time if I’m not mistaken.

          Actually I just realized that maybe the “slasher” is merely the shadows or souls of the people that were attacked by it. Would explain how it can have multiple forms. Of course, this is mere conjecture at this point.

      @Jaysus: “She’s like the only person left who’s been introduced in the series that hasn’t been touched on in any sort of depth yet.”

      I think she is one of a select few. Her, her Dad, Saki (AKA Hospital Girl), and Simon (who is too awesome for the tiny role he has played so far).

      Also Kuzuhara has been introduced, but might get substantially fleshed out.

        I meant more along the lines of possible suspects.

    Yeah, Shingen’s behavior might be an ingrained part of his personality, but it’s a delightful cover for his intelligence. The first few minutes of the episode were pretty awesome in my opinion.

    in regards to the slasher, i have a gut feeling that it has something to do with Anri

      Yeah… I think so too.

      Mikado = Dollars
      Kida = Yellow Scarves
      Anri = Slasher(s)

      Storyline-wise anyway. They’re also always associated with the primary colors of blue, yellow and red… which I’ve always found interesting.

    Great episode and yes Shingen is definitely awesome and fun to watch I think he might be my new favorite character too, lots of great info in this episode mostly about the demon sword. Was funny to see Celty making hearts out of her shadow powers while talking about Shinra thought that was a nice touch.

    I’m rather surprised you didn’t mention Shizuo’s little kill kill kill rant.

      Eh, I thought it was kind of awkward and didn’t really have much to do with the episode. It does show that Shizuo cares enough for Celty to want to exact revenge on her behalf, but I guess it slipped my mind when I was writing this post.

      that ‘kill kill kill’ bit is something of a survival mantra for him, when he’s trying to prevent himself from having one of his infamous psychotic episodes

    I am somewhat disappointed you’re leaving out all the great Celty moments, she’s becoming a very amusing character.
