K-On S2 03: Mugi’s Song

Go on Mugi-chan Yui is distracted you can jump her at any time…

Watching Ritsu in her slump while being in one myself made this episode seem better than it probably was. I think every so often people want a change of pace and try to mix things up with mixed results. Being the president and all I am surprised that Ritsu waited this long to let her ego get bruised, though I assume she had more fun showing Mio off to the rest of the school. Still I am glad she remembered why she took up the drums in the first place and decided to remember love. On the other hand every Monday makes me question whether or not I made a mistake in staying in my rate and not lateraling to something else, though it might just because my E-6 and O-3 have made nuisances of themselves in the months that we have had to work in the same office. The Melancholy of Ritsu was a interesting diversion, but as always Mugi-chan makes this episode so so honey sweet. I think that I have gotten use to the musical kryptonite that is the OP, the ED is still better though.

When I was a wee little Crusader who was swinging his sword to hack at the shins of Jihad-kuns across the globe I had a pet turtle, a Red Eared Slider, sadly the hatch-ling did not survive since I knew next to nothing when I had it. Mugi-chan having three overawed me and made me interested in trying to raise a turtle again, still possession of a stink-pot indicates that Mugi-chan is not afraid to get into the trenches when it comes to raising pets. I did enjoy how much interaction there was between Mugi and Mio, it culminated gloriously with a musical collaboration. I think this confirms a keen interest on Mugi-chan’s part and eagerly await the day that she jumps Mio, given how they have much in common Mio will not see it coming, which makes it all the more fun. I have to congratulate Sawako in her bid, failed though it did, to become the Miya-sama of the all girls school, sadly it was not yuri or onee-sama powers that made Ritsu’s heart flutter in the hall way but cosmetics… It was a kind of bitter irony given Sawa-chan’s name and the hated legacy of Ume, as I did watch Kimi ni Todoke as well. I am pushing for Mugi to jump Mio, but I think that the special relationship Ritsu and Mio have is lovely as well I just hope there is a place for Mugi-chan as well. Not much Yuri this year but with luck K-On and Kaichou wa Maid-sama will provided enough yuri subtext to help me make do this season. Sad to see that this recession year also comes with a recession in yuri and mecha.

Mugi adores scared Mio…

Mugi can peer into your heart Mio…

Oh be still my heart…Mugi-chan likes turtles too.

That forehead gives you a distinct shine though…

Ringo might…

It’s all part of her Cosplay Party plan first witch around instruments, then clothes…

Well you are the one who dumped it Yui…

Mugi is planning her next move over tea.

Gokigenyou…

So Ritsu ready to go into dere dere mode yet?

But not as cute as her amirite?

Yui it’s rude to steal food…

Soon she will be known as Sawako-sama…

Touch her keyboard some more…

A Captive Audience…

A raving fan girl…

Ritsu likes…

But Mio does not…

A one instrument gal…

Is it just Mio or is getting hot in here…

Go on Mugi-chan Mio is overheated you can unbutton her at any time…

T-minus 10 until squeals of onee-sama…

Feel free to stand closer…

So Yui did buy the helmet…

Azu-nyan thinks this is stupid…

That’s fine and all but what about being WILDER…

Ah yes the beginnings of Mio and Ritsu’s long love…

…Stick with the head band.

Sawako did not want to catch Yui’s stupidity…

Looks like Mio already caught it…

Mugi shall call it Planet Dance…

Sounds awfully Southern…

Yes Mugi-chan swoop in for the kissu Mio isn’t watching…

I think Mio is warming up to Mugi…

Mugi will call the song POWER TO THE DREAM.

I left this comment on another blog:

I found that Ritsu’s fickleness was an interesting presentation of her character. There’s some transition indeed, hinted at by Azusa’s melancholy from last ep, and in Ritsu’s case it was all about going back to the reason for the band’s existence.

Why do I find this so interesting? Because this is the right tone for the show to adopt when taking on how important music is to these girls. It’s inappropriate to break consistency and atmosphere by indulging serious Beck: MCS-style marshaling of confidence and motivation. These are fluffy high-school girls, and Ritsu’s subdued (yes I think this is subdued) melancholy/acting out/histrionics work to the show’s advantage.

And yet, even if Keith Moon is a tad old for Ricchan to get into (hell even Dave Grohl is too old and isn’t even a drummer anymore) I think it works because it felt right.

I agree that they didn’t go with a heavy handed route, they are still kids and need not think all that seriously since they have their whole lives ahead of them and it is just a club and not a band that is actively trying to sell albums and make money.

I found the slump to be rather relate-able since I go through the same bout of fickleness every time I get the shaft at work.

I like that it is more of a club than a serious band since they’re a long way from being pros.
