Gundam Wing 01-05: They call them the Specials…

Behold Hippie Char.

Seeing as how I lost my VOTOMS and I might not get it for a couple weeks depending on how slow mail gets here I might as well do something else in the mean time. It’s been over a decade since Gundam Wing aired on Cartoon Network and I think that for many it was their first taste of Gundam. At the time it was incredibly popular and was likely the first taste of Gundam on TV during the glory days of Cartoon Network in the US. I confess I always had mixed feelings regarding Wing but it was never the worst one in Gundam pecking order for me. Since I have it I may as well watch the whole thing again though it has been many years since I had last seen it and for most /m/en and wo/m/en hardly worth revisiting but I am having a good laugh while going down memory lane.

It certainly hasn’t aged too well with the prevalence of CRTs but this was back in the 1990s so I can forgive them for not anticipating the cool gadgets of today. (Come to think of it it would be troublesome to describe a smartphone to my 1995 self but I digress) so we begin with our main dude Heero who has no shortage of issues on the one hand he might have done us all a favor by zapping Releena into space dust but in the end he fails to do so. In fact Heero also fails in killing himself when he makes landfall, fails to take out the obligatory masked man, and fails to strangle Releena when they first meet, and fails to properly set the self destruct on his Gundam…

Not a good start to a super secret terror mission for the veteran who took part in the last battle in G Gundam. To be fair though his mission was compromised before it began and it wouldn’t surprise me if Dr. J also nixed Heero’s Martyrdom perk. Still as protagonists go he at least isn’t playing the whiny cry baby pilot that seems to be endemic to Gundam these days he’s a killer and he’s pretty damn comfortable with that as well. Sadly the whining is principally done by a bleeding heart pilot named Quatre, though thankfully he isn’t the titular lead so his presence while annoying wasn’t dominant. If nothing else Heero was pretty damn smart for using his hacking skills to pay off his debts and clear all the necessary paper work to get into school, just why he needed to got to an school for rich people is beyond me, but I think it was so that he could be a total asshole to everyone in the school starting with Releena. Quickest way to make sure you have no friends for the duration of high school is to be a huge dick to the most popular chick in the school. It would have worked too if Heero’s aim was to be the pariah of the class, since I think that was why he did it since if no one wants to be his friend he could disappear for weeks at time and no one would really know why or care about the truth. Sadly Releena is something else and the tearing up of the invitation doesn’t make her want to leave the bad boy alone, it makes her want to jump him even MORE. Heck Releena was so obsessed she was almost going to fight Sally Po after that cute boy remark.

Releena was for a while my candidate for most useless person in all of Gundam because at the time since Nina Purpleton could at least be useful as a mechanic, but that title has since passed to one Princess Poverty of that hated place called Azadistan. At the very least Releena isn’t the kind of vapid sorry excuse for a woman that has talks about heathen Azadistan gods that aren’t Zeus in the dead of night. Nor is Releena just watching TV all the time she acutally goes out side to do things. Lastly hearing her in Japanese makes her seem less whiny as well, though it pretty much did wonders since General Septum’s Japanese VA wasn’t as grating on the ears as the English VA. Thankfully shit got really real for Releena once Lady Une did a Hail Mary with her make up bomb, incidentally it contained a mirror which meant that Une was cursed with seven years bad luck… but more on that as time goes on.

Trowa was alright though Quatre was still a big wet blanket, but Duo was stilly the memorable cocky asshole I remember, and Wu Fei was as gloriously crass about his misogyny. Now I disagree with what Wu Fei thinks for the most part, but I have to admit having him be so politically incorrect was rather humorous because it probably wouldn’t fly these days. What I wouldn’t give for some one to insult Quess with taunts of HEY WOMAN, YOU LISTENING WOMAN?! Though since Noin was acting badly as a soldier I can’t fault Wu Fei for being a total ass hole about it. As terrorists go it really shows it’s age when all the pilots are doing is getting in Trieze’s Bases and killing his dudes. Unlike Gundam 00 where they solved narco trafficking by burning one field their goal is not world peace or some bullshit like that this is all about killing their oppressors, and while Noin calls Wu Fei’s bombing of the trainee barracks as cowardly I call it smart since OZ was about to engage in some pretty underhanded dealings later on.

All in all it was pretty funny and more enjoyable than I remember mostly since it wasn’t as terrible as that CE crap and at the time it was pretty original even if the things it brought in would later become a cancer. I still like the aesthetics of the OZ mobile suits but sadly they are made of weaksauce when it comes to combat. Lady Une is still one of the ugliest megane I have come across so far  though I think it’s mostly because of her personality than megane, I kind of wish she was hit the truck, becaue her love for Trieze is like…a truck. Come to think of it, right now we got Une, Noin, and Releena who are rather desperate women trying to jump uninterested guys, part of me finds this kind of humorous, though Catherine Bloom comes close but isn’t running Trowa down to get in his pants. I am not sure whether to fault them for picking poorly or to fault the guys for not being able to take a hint. Certainly Heero tried to prove that he wasn’t interested but given how his attempts to kill Releena have gone over it’s going to be his life story. While I can already see the tip of the recycled shot ice berg at least the OP and ED have aged fairly well even if the OP is kind of misleading since it was rather rare for a Gundam in Wing to lose parts in combat. Still even if Releena makes a nuisance of herself at times she’ll always make me DAWWWWW in the ED when she’s out frolicking with the animals.

Given how EO dared to try Macross 7 I may as well blog one of the less liked Gundam series that has fallen into relative obscurity. With luck I should be able to do this at least once a week, though I wonder if anyone else is going to endure Wing once again for shits and giggles.

Come to think of it why were ejection systems so rare?

Releena had imaginary friends…

Heero hated high school more than most.

Going hetero was Releena’s biggest mistake, she had a yuri harem and threw it all away…

What’s this?

A bill…?

Lady you got some real nerve to be playing bill collector…

But I just got this job…

Should have tried loose socks or thigh highs…

Damn wish I could have taken fencing for PE in high school…

You forgot to parry lover boy.

Come to think of it passing off love letters meant for you to some other douche bag would be a wonderful way to cause some mayhem.

You know the Middle East looks nothing like that…

He ain’t no Patrick, NO PATRICK.

Those goggles will protect you!

Fuck looks like Releena knows about your mecha fetish…

Probably should have pulled that out when you were at the beach…

Your shooting stance sucks.

If Treize tried to do his little bird shooting stunt on a US Military range the GMs would have torn him a new asshole and beat him to death with his own rifle.

Yes I too groaned during this scene.

Funny thing about OZ mobile suits was that they were pretty good looking, but they all had paper machete for armor…

Hey it’s Lu Bu, errr…Tallgeese

As flying suits go, not bad but Flag and Enact are better.

If only Quatre was really Middle Eastern like Prince Ali…

Noin SLAP.

Noin wants his loins so bad…

I wish Wu Fei pulled out a piece of cloth instead.

Come to think of it I never understood why OZ pilots put goggles one all the time.

In Ur Base, using ur Lazor, killing ur dudes…

So desperate…You know I kind of wish Releena gave up pacifism and just jumped Heero.

Some one farted in the hot tub…

This is why you post a 24 hour watch…

Where’s my gitah?

Yeah you could use that make up lady…

All Releena wanted to do was make a cutting remark about how Lady Une was using cheap make up and how it wouldn’t cure the ugly.

Ah Gundam Wing! As one of my gateway anime series I feel major amounts of nostalgia for this series and its definitely one of my favourite mecha series (despite the fact its majorly flawed). God knows how many times I’ve seen it, and now this post makes me want to watch it again!

It’s not my favorite but it had its moments though I wonder if the nostalgia isn’t clouding my mind.

Oh, this is so nostalgic. My first legit mecha series. I vaguely remember this show in its entirety. All I recall is drooling over Duo, utterly hating Releena, thinking Wu Fei as the ugly one, and calling Zechs as ‘Sex.’ Oh Youth, where art thou gone?

Well Wu Fei did end up all alone and was the only one that was haunted by Trieze…

Oddly enough so far i think my hatred for Releena has passed, but time will tell.

I concur ZZ is not anime it did not exist we went from Zeta directly to Char’s Counterattack.

I also think that SEED and GSD are at the very bottom.

And who can forget: “Papatayin kita.”

          Relena Peacecraft = Relena Pittskurt
          Millardo Peacecraft = Million Pittskurt

I think there are even more, but I can’t remember them off my head.

As a U.C. Elitist, this series makes me rage almost as much as GSD. I find the armor in this series, both plot and mobile suit-wise comically pathetic. I mean I know that Amuro could kill Zaku II’s blindfolded, but c’mon, swinging your melee weapon should not automatically equal 10 dead leo’s.

If only Wu fei were more like Master Asia than Sai Saici.

Agreed on Deathscythe. Then again….SIEG ZEON!!!

I actually liked the Mobile Dolls, but I still felt the Gundams were way too overpowered. Wing Zero/Heero’s plot armor is so thick, it could probably survive a direct hit from the GP02 nuke, Turn A’s Moonlight Buttery, AND the Gryps Laser with nary a hitch.

Ahh… Gundam Wing, it brings me back to the days when I was an angry overcaffeinated CPL about to get out and back into academia…

It was the 90s and yuri and Class S had yet to hit mainstream, a pity as Releena could have been a proto-Rosa Gigantea…

GW was also the first Gundam show with a pretty boy main cast (i recall reading something about them being inspired by Saint Seiya???), which unfortunately launched a thousand smutty yaoi fanfics for which the goggles did nothing. It also went more super robot than previous Gundams did, except for G Gundam, but that had the saving grace of Master Asia and the King of Hearts.

Took up foil fencing while in college, like all sports it tends to vary from fun to sheer tedium and then frustration. It wasn’t until after I graduated and started fencing saber at an outside school when it started to get fun, alas, recurring knee problems put a stop to that…

BTW, you will RAEG when Miss Eyebrows (aka Dorothy) shows up later on…

    RHYTHM EMOTION!!!

It did indeed bring out yaoi inclined fan base but so far it seems pretty tame and they made that extra effort to insert hetero pairings. I sucked at foil was alright with saber fencing sadly I was not the fasted nor the most skilled.

It was before the advent of a lot of things but so far Releena is saved by the passage of time because her Middle Eastern successor was just that inferior. So far I think only Gundam 00 had a little yuri bait, the others didn’t have that.
