Welcome to the Team! T.H.A.T.’s Newest Bloggers

You needn’t look at the lack of mecha that has devastated Crusader to realize that THAT is exposed to many different threats! THAT! To ensure that this symbol of team blogging will endure for all time, they have been selected! THAT! To prepare us for the future, the Titans, er, the new bloggers now rise!

We received a tremendous response to our recruitment drive, far more than expected, and with an extremely high quality of applicants. For something that I thought would only bring in a few contenders, we ended up with close to 30 even after shortening the application period. And it was a very difficult choice. Impz and I spent several hours reviewing, comparing, and debating which applicants to accept and it was really tough to choose from so many that we liked. Thank you to all who applied, we greatly appreciate your interest in THAT. But in the end we could only take in so many writers, and we took in one more than planned to bring you three new bloggers: Chronolynx, Hana, and Mystlord.

The review process.

After much discussion and analysis, these three have been chosen to be new writers for THAT. Over the next few days the new recruits will be settling in and making their first posts, so look forward to them. As their information comes in, the About page will be updated (which already features two of them.) I’ll leave the details up to them, but for now, a quick look at THAT’s newest authors taken from their application materials.

Chronolynx: A mysterious newcomer with a penchant for editorials. He’s looking to write editorials to discuss larger ideas within anime, often comparing various series. Noted series include Kaiba, Last Exile, and Inukami. Since his self-introduction was brief, I’ll leave it to his first post to give you the details…unless he’s going for that mysterious angle, hehe.

Hana: A “desert eating, baker boy hat wearing, eye make-up loving, acoustic guitar playing young teacher” from the UK, Hana has turned her sparkly, shoujo-loving eye to THAT. A fan of shoujo, josei, slice of life, and comedy, she started out in anime with Fruits Basket and is more recently into Skip Beat, Vampire Knight, and To Death Do Us Part. She’s watching a few shows this season, and may be interested in taking over Arakawa from our currently deployed and download-less Crusader.

Mystlord: A selective watcher of anime who seems to like serious science fiction shows and avoid most harems and shounen, Mystlord is looking to follow along with currently airing series and post his own unique thoughts that flow from them. A relative newcomer to the anime blogging community, Mystlord is looking to write editiorials and editoral-like episodic (or episodic-like editorials?) and generate lots of conversation.

Additionally, if you didn’t already notice, we’ve taken on ghostlightning of We Remember Love as a sort of part-time, occassional contributor to THAT. He’s going to be working on editorials every now and then, and possibly contributing secondary sections to episodic or editorial posts from other authors. A friend of the site and a great guy, we’re happy to have him as our ‘Editorialist in Residence.’

Oh, um, just pretend you didn’t hear that! Really, welcome aboard *readies Geass eye.*

Deserters will answer to Shouko.

It’s been close to a year since I started blogging, and it’s my pleasure to welcome in three newcomers to the blog. Way to make me feel old, guys! *runs off into a corner, Tamaki style.* In seriousness, it’s great to have had such a talented pool of applicants to choose from and I can’t wait to see our newest members in action. Their unique styles, interests, backgrounds, and preferences will enrich the blog and continue THAT’s tradition of being a diverse team blog. Together our current and new bloggers will continue to provide you the reader with a variety of posts on a wide range of different series and topics. We’re very happy to have Hana, Mystlord, and Chronolynx aboard.

Are you ready guys?!

Welcome to all three new applicants. It was an excruciating decision to make, since the caliber of many applicants are so high. It didn’t make our decision any easier, and I definitely lost a day or two of my life from the stress caused, lol.

I do know that I have never spent so much time discussing about the admittance of bloggers to the blog, but I guess that shows the quality of many applicants, whether they are accepted or no. It is perhaps a 3 hour well spent to discuss and make sure that we recruited the right mix of writers to improve our blog. It is just part of our values to improve and make sure that we never rest on our laurels.

So, to all who joined, thank you for participating in this event, and I am very very excited to see three writers who are clearly better than me in this blog. Cheers and lets hope we don’t have to taser them to prevent them from leaving….

Do check the About Page http://www.thatanimeblog.com/index.php/about-that-animeblog/ since I did it up to make it a bit prettier :P

Woo, new THAT writers! Although wow at the number of applicants. Wonder what’s gonna happen to the other 27. I bet a bunch of them will start their own blogs. With Blackjack. And Hookers.

Tell me about it. I went O_O when so many applicants came in because I expected at most 10 if not 8 applicants. When it hit the 15th applicant mark, I knew I was in deep trouble because I am likely to be the bearer of bad news and to cause anger to some applicants. I do admit that I was a bit blunt in some of my email replies to the applicants who did not succeed (I wrote individual entry reviews to every single blogger) and it might have offended some. The review is really to show you what we think of your writing honestly (if a tad blunt) so that you can improve it and write better for your audience.

I apologize sincerely, if I did offend anyone T_T

Hana is a girl. Or were you hoping for another trap like Impz? :3

      • Posted May 28, 2010 at 10:28 am | Permalink

Not likely. There’s only room at THAT for one trap. After all, Impz rejected my entry.

Of course. Who the hell wants to have a stalker in his blog who will literally rape the living lights out of him when he is not looking. Clearly rejected unless you offer me green haired lolis in return. I might consider… Wait what?

I just want to say, from an applicant that didn’t make the cut, thank you for providing good feedback and reasoning. It helps a young, underdeveloped writer take something positive away from the experience.

Or to put it another way, thank you for not being elitist pricks lol.

      Posted May 28, 2010 at 10:36 am | Permalink

I am glad that you found the feedback useful. There are a few comments that I gave to certain applicants that can be interpreted as rather mean-spirited (only realize when I email and went $^$@%@#%@#, sigh). I am very glad you find our comments useful, and please continue to support the blog, and we love to entertain your improved entry whenever we have a new application round.

I personally hope never though. Being a bearer of bad news is tiring for my psyche. :<

      • Posted May 28, 2010 at 10:45 am | Permalink

I still think you’re one of the nicest people I know for doing that. Taking the time to do that for over thirty other applicants who didn’t make the cut…wow, it must have taken a long time. It also goes to show how down-to-earth and kind-hearted you are.

Not to mention that you like green-haried lolis….@.@

Welcome, new writers! It’s always a joy to see the next generation of anibloggers. (Though I really shouldn’t be talking about that…)

I really do like the unique balance of interests in both genre and episodic/editorial writing, though I think THAT is heading towards more of an editorial blog though (which comes with certain benefits and disadvantages, of course.)

And another female blogger! (I’m assuming that Hana is a girl.) We need more of those in the blogosphere. Mystlord also seems like a good addition; I could really use a balance of episodics and editorials on science fiction series.

A mysterious newcomer with a penchant for editorials.

I think I’ve just found a new best friend. Plus, he likes Kaiba and Last Exile; how can I not look forward to Chronolynx’s posts in the future? I’m sure the whole blogging world’ll be watching him evolve into an excellent writer. (I’m also assuming that, as a fan of Kaiba, you’re watching Yojo-han Shinwa Taikei/The Tatami Galaxy…well, hopefully at least. XD)

I look forward to all of your posts in the future. Until we meet again! Ohohoho~

We’re not really going for being a majority editorial blog, but we did purposefully reserve a spot for a dedicated editorial blogger since we mostly write episodic entries. Crusader and I are heavily episodic in our blogging, and Impz has started back up with Hakuouki as well as editorials. Hana will add to that episodic capacity, while Chronolynx will provide some variety in our kinds of posts, along with ghostlightning’s occassional posts. Mystlord then bridges the gap between both kinds of posts. Diversity of styles was at the core of our considerations, especially when we had so many good writers to choose from.

    • Impz
      Posted May 28, 2010 at 10:45 am | Permalink

It is still staying as an episodic blog. It is our core structure/work and will not change much. However, we always think of how to provide diversity to the readers too. That is perhaps why there is a slight shift toward a few more editorials. I will say I envision a 75% Episodic – 25% Editorial mix, if anything. Should be same old, same old but with way better writers than a lame Impz :>

I am glad it’s useful. Also, AJ, I checked your site and you had very good entries there that would do your writing justice. I am surprised you didn’t submit those instead.

Thank you. I think I was a bit overeager in sending it, I only looked at my last 3 or so blog entries, and should have looked at the spotlight articles written for the site as well, since they have a bit more personality. Ah well. If you ever need bloggers again maybe I’ll reapply, hehe. For now I’m still working out the kinks of episodic blogging, so your feedback definitely helped. Thanks again.

Welcome and congrats to Chronolynx, Hana and Mystlord on joining the THAT team!

It’s funny you guys picked up GL too. Back when Sea Slugs was picking up new writers and they mentioned a Gundam-fanatic, I was thinking GL then. But it turned out to be Zyl, which was just as well. But I guess you guys swooped in with a better contract offer. ;-)

    • Posted May 30, 2010 at 10:34 pm | Permalink

LOL it may not show with the amount of comments I leave on Sea Slugs, but to me I think Kabitzin’s vision for a ‘office water cooler’ kind of joint where people hang out to talk about last night’s shows is excellent and he’s good at making that happen. Personally I think it’s the ideal episodic blogging environment.

However, the kind of long and indulgent posts that I write — even when I do episodic articles, don’t make for a good fit and I don’t want to detract from what makes SS what it is (or at least from what I think makes it special).

But there are several reasons why I wanted to join THAT more than any other team set-up (save for the doomed Oi, Hayaku!):

      1. Sentimental — this is the first team blog I ever read.
      2. Crusader, who is a comrade in mecha anime despite how often we disagree and how mean he is to Minmay.
      3. E O who is a very interesting blogger whose interests beyond anime I share enthusiastically with.
      4. Those two guys are Macross lifers, and you know I’m all for remembering love.
      5. I actually tried applying to THAT back in 2008 (twice!) and never got a response. I had to set up WRL first and after two years I’m glad to be finally here.

Well, that or find a team blog that is willing to accommodate you (I apologize, matt, your writing was awesome!). In my opinion, it is really writing, and more importantly, writing for an audience. Once you get the hang of it, you will understand what makes good writing, and what makes good blogging. :P

          I really feel that there’s a huge distinction. ^^

Thank you for the compliment, and I take no offense for not making the cut, the 3-4 people you brought in have had some wonderful columns so far and I look forward to reading more of them.

I was planning to start blogging on my own this year anyways, I felt I wanted that leap and use it to develop better writing, and when you guys opened the recruitment doors I felt a strange bit of good timing, even though it was not to be this time here, I still am interested in getting into it, perhaps I have to dive right in and get a good ol fashioned trial by fire to learn my lessons and improve.
