Kaichou wa Maid-sama! episode 12 – The maid dissonance in school

null

The above picture represents what I wish Kaichou wa Maid-sama should be like, but I guess that really is just a tease for nice sweet school life yuri romance. Sigh.

P/s: Impz wrote the above. It will be a bit interesting if a female says she loves yuri, no?

Episode Summary:

null

It’s Sports Festival time at Seika High and this week we get to see an even more fired-up Misa-chan determined to win every friggin event. Not because she is selfish or a masochist (actually I’m not so sure about the latter). No, rather because she wishes to do so on behalf of her girls’ team, in order to ensure the girls’ enjoyment of the Festival and also to continue to add to their positive experience of their high school life as a whole. Cue a series of events which include sprints, relays, horse-back riding, an obstacle course and, finally, a cosplay race.

As expected, the Prez demolishes the rather weak fight put up by most of the boys, except for a threat posed by one of the other Prez-hating and Sakura-loving boys, who stoops at nothing (including multiple attempts at cheating) in order to win the obstacle race, the prize for which being a kiss from (a reluctant) Sakura. Misaki puts up a valiant fight, but her stamina is fading…. Fortunately the hitherto non-competing Usui steps in to save her from disqualification, resulting in Usui finishing first with Misaki in second place, but deciding to hand his prize over to Misaki, who receives the kiss on the cheek gladly from an equally glad Sakura.

Last activity is the cosplay race, in which the more non-athletic participants are given the chance to shine, including the determined Yukimura – who is unfortunate enough to pick a maid costume and is promptly made fun of by some of the other boys. When a flustered Yukimura then trips and falls, Misaki and Usui decide to help him up and finish in equal last place, while dressed in equally bizarre cosplay outfits that they very quickly custom-re-make in the dressing room. Final scores: all is well again at Seika High and even more people are hot for MIsaki and Usui.

His and Her Thoughts:

A fun episode, showing-off a very nice change in hairstyle for Usui (mini-ponytale using the ribbon/colours of his team, ’twas very fetching) and a couple of very cute outfits for Misaki. I particularly enjoyed: the petrified boy on the starting blocks of the first race (Misaki’s doing); Misaki randomly but cutely ‘resting’ in Sakura’s lap; Usui’s manly ‘leave this to me’ baddass/ kyaarific/ sparkly moment, before he went skipping over the mats in the swimming pool like a crazy guy using crazy guy sound effects; Usui threatening to strip Misaki (nuff said); and finally the final victory (again nuff said). And misaki’s eye-patch. Only improvement would be if he had actually stripped her (*sigh*).

On another note, my heart originally sank at the thought that this might be another ‘filler’ style epi, seeing as how it didn’t push the main plot forward or develop the central relationship any/ much further. However, even though it is a chapter (or more than one, can’t remember) from the manga, I enjoyed it and I’m glad they ‘neatened’ up the complicated plans that the idiot 3 originally had regarding the custom made maid outfit (manga spoiler but not a biggie: **they originally made the outfit specifically for Misaki to wear by having her specifically if unknowingly pick it out during the cosplay race and put it on**).

I also enjoyed the brief exploration of Yukimura’s shy personality and his determination to succeed at an event that no one else takes seriously was sweet. Thus it was nice to see both Misaki and Usui saving his day. And the other guys going gay for Usui in his ninja outfit. As mentioned Misaki’s pirate eye-patch also went down well with me, and…I can’t believe I (who firmly prefer my fan-service to be of the man-service variety) am saying this…but the (fake) yuri moments were also really cute and funny. But no doubt Impz will have a tiny bit more to say about that.

I actually found everything extremely funny, but I also agree with how the general school population perceive costume competition. In a way, it reminds me deeply about how me and a few more athletic students in our class pushed the less physically able students to join the silly contests because we find it too unmanly . I am not sure if any of you have that experience (Hana, being a lecturer, might see this more often than I do). As much as it is idealistic to think that way, it just shows how Kaichou wa Maid-sama really sees all things in an extremely positive light.

I am surprised Hana didn’t mention anything about “rather than given a kiss, I rather kiss forcefully” from Usui. That, to me, is so hilarious because I went into -_- mode. Usui, for all his perfection and supreme timing to the point of craziness, is good for comedy gold when he sprouts out lines that would not be out of place in a more sexual nature. That, in my opinion, is actually funny because he says it with such a deadpan expression *but sparkly flowers of bishieness* for the shoujo fangirl.

I think this episode is clearly showing how “fillers” can be done very well. It is funny, there are crazy moments that are actually funny (Yukimura, the next trap in town?) and there is enough yuri love to spread around. Yes, you hear me right. Yuri love spreading is good. I do wish that they have more yuri moments of Misaki and Sakura, only to see if Usui the possessive one will get jealous or not. Yes, I am weird that way.

Anyway, which is your most kyaarific moment this episode?

Ugh… traps… Exactly who are traps aimed at? I don’t understand it.

I would have been more entertained if some more of the other female characters took part in the cosplay race. Only if…

LOL! Or, more accurately, I just LOL-ed for at least a minute imagining a certain person’s reaction to this… tbh I have no idea either, I shall let a certain person reply to this instead…LOL LOL LOL

Obviously at weird guys who find the whole DFC thing with a dick funny. Now to think of it objectively, traps are indeed weird in real life (see: Transvestites) but I think the fact that traps are always used as a form of a sexual joke allows it hilarity to say the very least. I don’t think it is truly meant to elicit any true sexual notions except in hentai or other contentious material.

would have been more entertained if some more of the other female characters took part in the cosplay race. Only if…

Aye, That one I fully agree.

Agreed, there can never be enough Usui x Misaki moments (*sigh*). Speaking of which I can’t believe I didn’t mention the ‘I prefer doing the kissing rather than receiving’ line from Usui, or the kiss on the hand at the end, either! Clearly nothing has since compared to the kiss that he did forcefully give in that earlier epi right before he leaped off the friggin school roof. He is just too awesome.

Poor moron trio. All that hard work. At least the next episode will focus on them.

Actually, it will make them awesome. It’s pretty much one of my favorite manga chapters for all the hilarity and awesomeness. Won’t say anymore in fear of being lame.

I agree with both of you – I cannot wait for the next epi! Bring it ON!

I’m a girl, yet I like yuri. Nothing wrong with it. Really.

You are a girl???? Oh my GOD.

I always thought you are a guy because of the way you talk, heh. Anyway, liking yuri is a little strange through anecdotal experiences since all the female anime fans that I know cannot understand yuri at all. They find it silly in general, but I guess it’s the type of people I hang around with. Perhaps I should go ask Hana about this yuri thing, or even wifey (even though I already know her preferences).

Do take note though that I went to Malate Catholic School from pretty much pre-school to the end of high school. And though it had a boy’s department, it wasn’t Co-Ed, and all the guys were in the other building two streets away. This segregation led to the Girls Department becoming a virtual all-girls school, with all the fun that entails.

Let me tell you, it was not comfortable being hit on by the girl two rows over.

So yes, I’m not bothered in the least by yuri. Heck, one of my favorite shows was Kannazuki no Miko after all.

Oh hahaha. I had a very similar experience, except that my secondary all-boys school is a Catholic school right smack next to an all-girls school with decently cute uniforms. Imagine the level of flirting we young silly guys with those gals. Their vice-principal even had to stand guard in front of her gates every morning and afternoon to make sure that the hungry wolves of our school will not eat up the little kittens of her school.

Oh man, she really don’t know her students well. :O

Huh?! She’s clearly a girl. Girlie nick – check. Girlie pic – check. Girlie words (Myssa Rei, Posted May 28, 2010 at 5:41 pm, “I’m sure she really means a ‘dessert’ (parfaits, yum) rather than a ‘desert’, like the Sahara.”) – check. Plus she stood up for me and my dodgy spelling against the manly Baka-Raptor. Of course she’s a sista!

Back to the yuri thing. Personally? Hell no. At least not the hentai stuff (unless there’s another name for that? Sorry I’m still relatively new to all this). But I like it when Yuri, and BL, undertones are used for comic effect, if it’s done in the right way. But I agree that I think there’s nothing wrong with hard-core yuri or yaoi if that’s what floats others’ boats – to each his/her own I say! :)

      • Posted June 20, 2010 at 10:13 am | Permalink

I think it would be more accurate to say that I’m not bothered by yuri underpinings, in the same way that I’m not bothered by BL/yaoi. Blatant stupidity though…

There’s been too many ‘filler’ episodes in Maid-sama lately. The series started off really strongly, but now it’s getting fillerific. I hope it gets back to story soon!

It will somewhat, with a back story of the three baka (in a very funny way, but still good to be honest). I am open to this filler actually, since it is quite funny. I think it is a thin fine line about fillers that I am treading on, but I put my head on the chopping block and say this is a good filler that I am glad stays in.
