Gundam Wing 46-49(Final): Zechs’ Counter Attack

In Gundam Wing Earth drops Axis on YOU!

With the final battle lines all drawn Treize takes over Axis as a Feddie Base for his huge mob of Leos and his lone Tallgeese II. Relena’s efforts to dissuade Zechs from being like Char come up to nothing and The Gundam Pilots once again fail to make a strategic impression as the Trieze and Zechs go at it. Heero takes Hilde’s jacket and infiltrates the Libra with no trouble at all, seems after all this time his knack for getting inot fortified spaces has not dimmed, a shame that no Gundam Pilot since has attempted to kick so much ass out side of Gundam. The White Fang seems to have fighting abilities that are sub par and get tricked and fooled by one lone assassin. Heero finds Relena who is decidedly happy that Heero came to rescue her. Seems all her efforts paid off. Zechs is unwilling to stop being Char and Heero accepts this and elects to not execute Zechs in front of Relena.

Heero accepts that Zechs wants to get himself and a bunch of spacenoids killed so he leaves Relena follows him like a fawning fangirl but her insistence that they do something falls on deaf ears as Heero simply asks her to sit down next to him. It pretty much results in Relena letting the matter drop as her heart goes doki doki. Back out in the vacuum of space Trieze does some dynamic posing with Tallgeese II and requests that he and Zechs duel to settle things, Zechs declines and tries to blast Zechs with the main cannon. However Lady St. Une completes her ressurrection and using Wing Gundam gets Treize to safety. At this point the gloves come off and the horde of Space Leos takes on a bunch of Mobile Dolls, the result is a lot fewer blown up Leos than I initially thought would happen though there are plenty one for one trades as Trieze’s dudes are motivated by loyalty unto death.

Back on Peacemillion they decide to ram the Libra’s main cannon that over heats with every shot. Sally Po brow beats the crew into following her lead and with a rather hot blooded helmsman pulls an ALL AHEAD FULL since Peacemillion seems to be lacking in firepower. Trieze salutes Sally’s courage as she is a woman of significant talent unlike that useless Shirin who needed a man to do all the heavy lifting for her. Sally succeeds and Zechs is greatly displeased that Quinze is such a moron that he let it happen. Zechs resolves to then do a colony drop without a colony and has the Libra set a new heading directly for Russia. Quatere, Trowa, and Duo infiltrate the Libra themselves to take out the Mobile Doll control node and Wu Fei goes off to fight Trieze. Duo finds the Gundam Engineers all holed up, Trowa does his own thing, and Quatre runs into Dorthy. Dorthy was kind of pissed off that Zechs and Trieze did not duel, but tries ti have her own duel because of the traditional sword fight requirement in Gundam. Sadly much to Dorthy’s heartache Quatre shows up instead of Relena. Dorthy was hoping for a Kannazuki no Miko ending where she could have a sword fight with Relena as she confessed how much she loved everything about Relena. For his insolence Quatre is run through by a victorious Dorthy but her heartbreak remains.

After Peacemillion successfully rams the Libra Heero has to save Relena from falling debris but Relena is rather disappointed that it did not lead to last minute sexy time. Heero makes for Wing Zero so that he can stop Zechs from interfering with their anti-battleship drop operations. However Heero seems to have gotton smoother while getting a little dere dere for Relena and they share a moment of tenderness but no kiss as the helmets got in the way but while Relena was disappointed yet again, it was kind of Han Solo-ish in spirit. Duo with the Gundam Engineers succeed in making it to the MAIN GENERATOR. Quinze tries to interfere but the five old dudes manage to set them up the bomb as Quinze hints at how this was not the intended Operation Meteor. I was kind of wishing they had an old man fist fight ala MGS4, but this wasn’t about old men beating the crap out of each other.

However one section is still on course and Wu Fei finally dispatches Trieze or rather Trieze dispatches himself. With Trieze dead the Federation surrenders to Zeon, but the hated Zekes are not triumphant for long. A wounded Quatre, who sadly did not die of his wounds, Trowa, and Duo start blowing up auxiliary generators to lessen the impact, Quatre’s grunts also lend a hand. Heero and Zechs have a final duel that results in Zechs’ defeat, but Heero being all dere dere for Relena now says that he won’t kill Zechs because that would be a dick move to his waifu. It might also push Relena well into yandere territory and Heero didn’t want that. At the last generator Heero is about to detonate after being out of ammo, but Zechs decides to betray Zeon and takes out the generator himself promising that he will meet Heero once again. Still yet another piece breaks off and heads towards the Earth, but instead of calling up a bunch of mooks and Zakus Heero uses the Buster Rifle of superior ownage and takes it out in one shot, he even makes it out alive so there is no confusion resulting from newtype particles.

Zeon surrenders and the spacenoids throw out all the Zekes in their ranks as losers without mobile dolls. Relena becomes a functionary int he Earth Federation as Noin and Dorthy have a graveside chat. Now that everything is over Heero starts stalking Relena and gives her a bear and a card under the guise of a mechanic. Relena realizes at the last moment and tears up the card telling Heero to give it to her in person next time. Not bad for a CCA re-enactment if I say so myself. Speaking of next time there is still one more thing to attend to but that will have to wait as my laptop is kaput.

Final Thoughts:

I was surprised at how much likable Gundam Wing was after all this time, though much of it I confess has to do with using yuri goggles and having the benefit of a post yandere world. There was a lot less BL vibe going than I thought though I suspect much of it was due to the machinations of yaoi fangirls who latched onto the bishie character designs. Despite this there was significant effort made to pair up two of them, one had sis-con, and the other two well Wu Fei supposedly had a waifu and Quatre is just well Quatre. Trieze and Zechs each had a loyal stalker as well which makes good their claim to being hetero, seeing as how Trieze even fathered a little loli.

The animation was decidedly 90s with recycled animation out the buster rifle, understandable at the time and the thematic consistency engendered by the Napoleonic uniforms does much to reduce the age of the animation. It’s not as crisp as newer iterations but it has aged surprisingly well given the decade that has passed. In terms of plot it did turn into a parade of treachery but it was consistent treachery in that there were good reasons behind each one. Moreover it wasn’t completed with a single assassination. As overpowered as the Gundams were there were many more instances where they were humbled than I remember. Also I really liked how despite being unkillable they were not treated as symbols of righteousness that solved everything. The best they could do was win a single engagement but in the overall strategic picture they could not by themselves affect the strategic outcome in their favor. Trieze used them to start Operation Daybreak that resulted in OZ’s ascendancy and ever after they were isolated without a support base and had to be self sufficient, they had no one left to defend but even with nothing to lose they failed to take down Romefeller or the White Fang on their own. This made up greatly for the OP Gundam that Wing brought about a lesson that is no longer really remembered with newer iterations where the Gundam is not only invincible but is the deciding factor.

A major theme in Wing is the ideal soldier and to this end much of the sheer power of the Gundams is somewhat mitigated with the commando exploits of the pilots. In the case of Heero his exploits eclipse his grinding quests in Wing Zero and Epyon. His breaking Duo out of jail was pretty damn inspired. Where Jihad-kun still needed a Gundam all Heero needed was a couple explosives and the insight to see how he could case havoc in an OZ base using Leos and carriers. It was a very innovative way to accomplish the destruction of a whole lot of mecha, certainly such creativity is sorely lacking in today’s beam spamming louts that pilot Gundams these days. The Gundams were just treated as standard tools of war and there was much MS switching for the titular lead who was the best of the bunch in terms of sheer combat ability. In the end the ideal soldier did not win on his own and wasn’t the fountain of licentious bullshit. Rather it was Relena and the war weariness of the population that pretty much ended it. The White Fang did not draw a lot of support from the general populace neither did OZ or Romefeller. The Gundam pilots only had a simple mission to eliminate OZ but they were never able to do it despite having the edge in technology and individual combat abilities. They were a sort of Spec Ops outfit that could cause all sorts of trouble but in the end they could only do so much and without the support of a standing army they could not complete their objectives. In essence they failed to do what they set out to do and could only have a mitigating effect that did not last long.

Relena was much more tolerable this time around since these days merely sitting on a couch watching TV makes a female character a saint. I have to hand it to her for actually trying and sticking to her ideals. Early on she was much more endearing as she was on the verge of becoming female Heero with her own assassination attempt on Une. Even as she adopted a most disagreeable pacifism she did foretell Romefeller’s demise and was able to out wit Heero and Dermail. Dorthy was much more awesome in the post yuri world where she seems less belligerent and hostile and more like a yuri fueled yandere challenger to Heero. Also she stabbed Quatre clean through so that earns her bonus points. Quatre was by far the most ho hum as his archetype is the one that was more or less the template for succeeding pilots, that insipid righteousness coupled with fighting ability while whining about how killing and war is bad…

What I do think that could have been vastly improved in Wing was the mook on mook combat since had they cut back on the recycled animation they might have come up with something damns close to MS Igloo 2 with massed MS combat. Instead we got a tease of what might have been given the recycled animation. At least the Gundam vs Gundam combat suffered less and there was the very distinctive Tallgeese that has since become more widely admired within the franchise now that it is Lu Bu who you should not pursue. These days Gundam Wing seems much more tame and better executed than succeeding series. There wasn’t an abrupt change of course in the middle like how Gundam 00 went away from the initial goal of having a geopolitical feel or like SEED which tried to be a condensed and modernised UC continuity and ended up being a stinking pile of shit by time of Destiny. Also at least in Wing the characters looked different enough unlike SEED so newer doesn’t always mean better.

It was probably the gateway anime for many and not without good reason as it was pretty consistent with what it set out to do. Hate for Relena is probably less now than it was then since she actually put in effort and wasn’t a mere prop. It is in my mind inferior to UC in most respects but at least Heero is in my opinion one of the better pilots to pilot a Gundam. Unlike most pilots he did not have some newtype abilities to make him an ace he trained and developed a whole other skill tree which he maxed out his commando abilities to make him much more dangerous than he would have been with just a Gundam. They made a good point in elaborating how a bulky Gundam was not that easy to hide and wasn’t the solution to every tactical situation. After their surrender to OZ keeping a Gundam in tow limited their abilities to blend in resulting in Duo’s humiliation and Wu Fei’s capture. I like how Heero was one of the few normals to pilot a Gundam without being a newtype or newtype equivalent the notion that genes or some granted power makes one a superior pilot is a load of shit since combat abilities derive not from bloodlines or purely genetics but from training hence why an army of Buddhist Fanatics could defeat the much vaunted Samurai during the warring states period. In that sense it was much more real robot in feel than newer laser show iterations. Not only were they human and normal, but they failed too, repeatedly at that. That fallibility makes them to me much more relatable than some messiah figure that Jihad-kun and Kira ended up as.

Lastly Rhythm Emotion is a great OP, not quite Men of Destiny good but still good.

Final Grade: B+

Final Verdict:

Fans of mecha that don’t mind commando heroics to go with and at times eclipse mecha heroics might find something to like here. It is also one of the few Gundams that has a heavy emphasis on massed MS combat without Gundams any where outside of MS Igloo 2. Mecha fans who like seeing how things are the way they are now can find the genesis of the Modern Gundam in Gundam Wing as it pioneered many of the staples now seen in AU Gundams. Do not take if you are allergic to bishies, overpowered Gundams, recycled animation abuse, and Relena. UC oldfags should generally avoid as this is where the cancer that is killing Gundam all started. Also as good looking as OZ Mobile Suits are they are all dishearteningly have armor made of C4 coated with napalm. Side effects include yuri sightings, yandere sightings, resetting of broken bones on your own, calling your computer Zero System, telling people to say good bye while armed with a pistol, stealing emergency vehicles, raiding military bases, and drop kicking satchels of C4. Please consult a physician if you start shouting WOMAN as this may be a prelude to an ass kicking and persistent datelessness. Please contact Chaplain Crusader for a Tough Shit card and or hurt feelings report in the event you failed to read or simply ignored the warning out of your own lemming like ignorance.

Will do Endless Waltz when I get back home with a working laptop.

At least the Feddies have better close order drill.

OH YEAH Tallgeese II.

I am saddened that all that they have got left are Space Leos.

Heero wanted to shoot Zechs for having such ugly uniforms.

Definitely a safety violation but it is a cool pose.

If only it had a GERWALK mode…

Here comes the Forlorn Hope…

Heero didn’t really want to hear Relena’s pleading…

…So he offered to kiss her if she’d sit down and be quite.

Relena accepted…

…and then told Heero how she was going to name their kids.

Sally Po was all like fuck this, let’s RAM them.

Trieze saluted Sally’s awesomeness.

Heero had newtype flashes without the annoying flash.

This guy certainly felt alive.

Unlike some Empire commanders serving Reinhard, Sally Po was not above a one for one trade.

Relena was a little miffed that they weren’t having end of the series intercourse.

What has been seen cannot be UNSEEN.

Relena wanted her kiss for being a good girl.

Zechs Noin’s girlfriend and BFF Sally sank your battleship.

This ain’t no Leo boy NO LEO.

In the end Relena gets her wish…

But the helmet got in the way…

Relena told Heero she loved him…

All Heero said was “I Know…”

Dorthy fighting remotes is one thing…

Oh it’s only Quatre, never mind…

Dorthy was most dismayed that she was not fighting Relena in miko outfits with katanas.

I was so happy when this happened.

Good bye Quatre no more dialogue from you.

Not that easy is it Wu Fei…

And in the end Trieze decided to be an Hero too.

Dorthy cried herself to sleep that night knowing that Relena would never come.

Thus did the Unmarried Widow Alliance gain a third member

Time for an old man fight.

Fight me if you dare…

How could they both miss…

Well time for the old I win button…

Zechs made sure that Relena would always stalk Heero.

I don’t see how Zechs can get out of that one…

Heero had to pull off an Amuro.

Still in Gundam Wing style mooks are not needed only a buster rifle…

Also it’s a less ambiguous ending.

So ended Operation Meteor with a meteor shower…

At least noin got rid of her cowboy outfit.

In Gundam Wing Ending Heero STALK RELENA!

Relena wanted to engage in Heeroics of her own.

The end or is it…?

You know, when I first watched Gundam Wing about a year ago, I liked it a lot more than I figured it would. Some of the treachery/defections/etc. got a bit confusing after a while, and there was some goofiness and whatnot, but I found that, at least for me, a lot of the bad stuff in Gundam Wing’s reputation seems to have been exaggerated over the years. Not really surprising, given that it has been, what, 15 years since it was first released, and 10 years since it debuted in America?

Yeah the repuation Wing got was much worse than it actually was I wonder if in ten years time if Gundam 00 and GSD will be viewed was alright…

I am sure it was the Gateway Gundam for many fans but it’s legacy is strongly associated with Gundam 00 and SEED though some what unfairly.

Obviously in AC Gundam, spacesuits are NOT rated 800N and masks all fail the punch test…. watching it through the yandere yuri school life rom-com in space with giant robots make it more entertaining than trying to take it seriously. Too bad Ecole du Ciel will never get an animated adaptation…

Yeah the modern interpretation or rather forced slant with regards to Relena and Dorthy make it much easier to take in than at face value. Still Heero managed to kick some ass and at least Gundams did not solve everything.

So now Dorthy is hanging around Noin looking for pointers on how to be a proper imouto to impress Relena??

    Zeta Gundam Retroblog NAO!!!!!

I too must say that wing is far more palatable now than I thought it would be. If it weren’t for the overpowered Gundams, it could’ve been one of the better alternate universe entries.

No Zeta just yet going to get to 0083 or wrap up the first part of G Gundam. Need to buy a new laptop when I get home as mine broke. Also Endless Waltz needs to be done a shame all my screen caps went with the computer crash.

Still it was a lot better than I remember but not for the reasons they intended.

Gato did manage to take out almost the entire feddie fleet despite the fact Zeon was completely outgunned in 0083.

            Type C/Custom >>>>>>x10000 over Gelgoog Marines/Dra-C’s/Zaku 2 FZ’s/Rick Dom’s. (Beam weapons/Hyper Bazookas versus 0079 Era Zaku MGs/Grenade Launcher? LOL)

            GP03>>>>>>Neue Ziel/GP04 (Macross Missile Spam>>>>Fake Incom Funnels)

Gato’s end was most honorable – the same can’t be said for most U.C. Feddie scum. Paptimus Scirocco? BUAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA. How embarassing!

Had Gato died at Solomon he need not copy Dig Out Doug and would have spared much pain and suffering.

Save your prattle when the time comes to point out how Gato had a faggy pony tail and a Nina Purpleton for a GF. The damn hippie.

One of the minor things that was pretty much left unexplained is how, for some reason, Relena and Heero seemed to be able to answer what the other was thinking, without the other party actually SAYING something. Empathy is all good and well, but it verged too close to Newtype-related shenanigans at times,

    • Crusader

I suspect that Relena is easy enough to read as she pretty much had a one track mind. As for Relena reading Heero superior yandere stalking coupled with fan girlish delusions maybe? That or they were similar in thought processes that they were married in spirit to the point they knew what the other was going to say.

Come to think it if cries of ‘I knew you were going to say that’ when some guys call the waifu or husbando are any indication maybe it’s the result of being a couple.

I think Quatre was the one meandering into newtype territory and such was the flash that I didn’t sense it from Heero and Relena.

Hope your studies are going well as well as your drawing.

I love this ending, though in Endless Waltz, Milliardo Peacecraft (aka Zechs) somehow manage to survive? wow… :D

in striking parallelism to Char’s Counter-Attack, on the other hand, Char didn’t survive and was declared KIA with Amuro.

and why the heck is Char more famous than Amuro? arggghhh! :D

and yeah, Tallgeese III kicks TG II’s butt. I like that Epyon-like custom of the TG series. :D
