Shukufuku no Campanella – When did anime become so darn low?

For those who really want to know what happened in this episode, you can try reading another anime blog. I will skip through to the thoughts and impressions sections to tell me why this show is by far one of the most terrible first episodes I ever watched for a very very long time.

The source material was eroge, but it should stay there as eroge and never had transcended into anime in the first place. If I have my way. One of the major flaws in the first episode is that it makes little pretense whatsoever to transit the eroge material into anime, making me feel like I am simply watching animated dialogue and CG packs. That shouldn’t be anime. An anime either tells a story, develops a character or provides some stupid fanservice that I care little about. I am not going to hate on it that much for fanservice because there are enough anime fans who actually enjoy seeing pantsu and all. I don’t understand, I ain’t gonna try but at least that means the anime has some merit. This, I really cannot see how anyone can consider this good.

That said, it really feels like this should have just been a hentai OVA. It is seriously lacking in the character personality section, with the main characters either nondescript and plain annoying to the point that I wish this was a tentacle anime. I mean, they have all the money to make the animation pretty top notch but couldn’t pay some pennies to find a director, scriptwriter or producer who can actually think and weave out some random stuff that can hold my attention for twenty minutes? I mean, even K-on knows it has little story or plot, but makes sure that the personalities are interesting enough. I don’t like it, but I can see why people like it. This Campanella crap? Not really.

To provide a better understanding of how much fail this series is, here’s a time line of what happened during the viewing between me and 13sugars.

00:35 – Impz: Oh, the graphics is good
01:00 – 13sugars: What is the source material for this by the way?
01:20 – Impz: It should be eroge, if I remember what I wrote for the summer season preview.
04:00 – 13sugars: This would really be good as a hentai series. It’s boring me though.
04:35 – Impz: I was already playing my football manager 2010, and lost interest. Maybe we should find the hentai CG pack for this game?
05:00 – 13sugars: Ok.
05:13 – Impz: Now, I wondered how I am going to even review on this.

I lasted 5 minutes and 13 seconds. I did let the show continue to run until it ends, but I wasn’t really concentrating too much (except to find the CG pack). My wife was, and said it was a good animation with nothing inside. Cotton candy, but just less sweet?

don’t deny that the animation is very well done, but it is not even fluffy. Fluffy means that there is at least a little bit of substance (despite being a bit cheesy and all) but it is to the point in which I cannot even be bothered watching it after the first minute. Seriously, when has anime gone down this dark road that we have to watch such crap like this? Thank god that this is rare and there are always redeeming facts on an anime for most recent seasons. I will say this is one to thrash in the rubbish bin, unless they start showing boobs and pantsu and whatever fanservice they can conjure. If not, I really wonder if there is even a single target audience for this.

The stupid, maybe.

Recommendation: 1/10 (Horrendous first episode that is a big pretty piece of nothing. Avoid at all costs)

Given the preview material I was really expecting to dislike this show, but I ended up thinking that it was alright. I’m still not convinced that I’ll watch it, but I’ll at least give it three episodes. It was a pretty nice, calm, idealized Renaissance sort of world with at least a few likable characters. Like Aria but not so sedate (not that I dislike a languid pace, but it just doesn’t mix with moe in my mind.)

Sure it had a fair bit of cliches, but most of the characters were at least alright and the art was nice. I’m thinking that a good bit of people are going to like the show. To be honest I don’t see how it’s so different from K-ON’s first episode in a lot of ways.

Oh please don’t put Aria and this together on the same page please. I wouldn’t mind if this show had characters that I don’t feel like killing every single second, with annoyance absolutely grating to the point of stupidity. I see all cliches, little attempt to make these characters more than cardboard figures (albeit very well animated and cute). As I said, very pretty, but empty inside.

What, you expect us to play ONLY Otome games? How elitist. :P

Anyway, hilarity needs to be shared. Do you prefer Megaupload, or should I just send it via email?

Well, when I have only a sample of one, what do you expect :P (as in a single female friend who still watches anime, and she’s not technically a friend anymore because she’s my wife). Megaupload or email is fine. I can always get wife to reupload for me. ^^

In case my post way down at the bottom doesn’t catch an I, here’s the HCG set I converted to jpg from png (honestly, what kind of sane person saves 1600 images in png for distribution?). It’s a much more convenient size of 110mb now.

Life’s too short for bad anime.

    • Posted July 5, 2010 at 10:14 pm | Permalink

I don’t know… it falls into the no-man’s-land of inoffensive anime for me. I could easily see half my staff watching it ‘just because it’s there’ while waiting for other shows to get subbed. I’m not claiming it’s good but there are more annoying shows this season… though maybe none as boring :/

Avoid at all costs? That’s some solid advice given you only watched 5 minutes after deciding to hate the rest of it.
I’ll take E.O’s take on it instead of elitist hating.

Actually, I watched all of it. I only paid attention to it for that 5 minutes, but I did watch all of it despite losing absolutely any interest for the show. Anyway, hahah, I love to be called an elitist, since I am a casual anime fan by any definition. Thanks for calling me that, simply because it feels good to actually be an “elitist” (whatever that means, actually @_@?)

If it’s bad, it’s bad. There’s little to describe it other than that. Of course, different people have different views. :> I disagree with him completely.

That’s what i said “watched five minutes after you decided to hate the rest of it.”
And after watching the episode i can definitely say this was not the antichrist of anime. It was no yumeria/akikan/moetan.

I think I made it to 3:30 before I was back at my Football Manager 2010 game. If I had known this was based off an eroge I probably would have done the exact same thing.

I am trying to make my Middlesbourgh team win a third consecutive EPL title and win a second Champions’ League in my fifth year with them. :P

Yeah, played like the last 9 versions of it. Right now I’ve got Ipswich up into the EPL, after finishing 6th with them last year, I’m shooting for a Champions’ League place this season.

Posting something I put up in a FM forum. (Totally OOC)

Playing Middlesbrough up to the fourth season.

The first season was a decently easy promotion, even though I was second all the way until two matches left. I somehow manage to get some cheap deals after hunting for cheap players (bought players like Mitea).

The second season was the greatest shock in my life. We are not expected to be anything more than 14th, but some extremely astute buys imho (Acousta for 6 mil,.Verrati on a loan deal, Diego Buonanotte for a 6.75 mil, Omar Bengeza at 750k and a few other young prospects) and a very tight but fluid 4-2-3-1 deep formation (made my own strategy based on some fm09 experience) provided a very good start to the campaign. The team faltered off during the mid season (8 losses by January!) but manage to somehow keep pace with the leaders and achieved 2nd in the EPL. Absolute shocker. Oh, I forgot to add, went out darn fast in FA and League Cup. Faced the top 4 and got walloped. lolz.

The third season, due to being 2nd last season, allowed for more funds. Diego wanted a bigger club, and provided more funds for us. Afinkeev was my best deal at 14 mil pounds along with Di Maria for 5 mil (YES, REALLY, 5 MIL!) with a few other good additions to the squad (Dawson at 8 mil mid season) brought me my first EPL title. Amusingly, we also won the Champions’ League with a huge dosage of luck. In the quarter finals, I was losing 3-1 half time against Juventus and 3-4 on aggregate before fighting back 3-3 and going through. In the semi final, I was trailing Olympicos 2-3 before scoring a goal in the 92th minute for away goals rules. The final, vs Barcelona, was a total thrashing in possession (77% vs 23% for me). Was losing 1-0 up to the 86th minute until we summon the late goal spirit again and won 2-1. I almost felt like a real manager when my regen striker struck two absolute beauties. This is particularly nice because we only had 3 shots, 2 went in. Barcelona, on the other hand, had 24 shots on goal Go, Akinfeev!

Now on my fourth season, with an even bigger budget (84 mil, hell ya!), now leading the EPL by 4 points at the December winter period. Verrati is really a set piece monster. Best buy is really Sandro at a hefty 22 mil pounds, Marco Motta at 7mil, Mattock at 4 mil (he wanted to leave his club) and Gary Cahill on a free (Bolton relegated, I noted Feyenoord bidding for free, and went in the last minute to grab him for an almost English central defense (Krystov, Cahill, Dawson, Wheather). Manage to win the EPL for the second consecutive time and also the League Cup. However, low points were beating Manchester United, Tottenham and Liverpool in the FA cup, only to lose to West Ham 1-0 after dominating the whole match for the semi final. In addition, I lost badly to Real Madrid in the CL 4-2. I want my title back.

You guys are making me want to play the game again. I haven’t touched it since my FM 08 team where I successfully managed Nottm Forest to 6 straight EPL titles, then left for Blackburn to eventually make them into a team that also won the EPL every year. However my favourite thing about that game was the brazilian kid who chose to play for Switzerland, Aruejo. As a one year-stint as the Swiss national manager, I called him up to the national team. Recognising his talent immediatly, I signed him up for Nottm Forest at the age of 19. He stayed there for the next 15 years, becoming the clubs all-time record goalscorer. Better yet, when I left Nottm Forest for Blackburn, who was facing me 10 years later in the dugout when I was facing Nottm Forest? Yup, that same Brazilian turned Swiss kid, Aruejo.

      Ah, good times~!

…oh yeah, cartoons…that’s what this blog is about, right?

Well, I couldn’t be bothered to find out more after the first few minutes. I continued to watch it and I believe that it will be some slice of life, just that it should be hentai. Honestly. If your characters are thin as cardboard, at least show us some flesh for the fanservice, duh.

Lol you expected substance from this show? xD
But I mostly agree with EO, except that the characters in Campanella are far more annoying than K-ON or Aria ones; but other than that, just watching this to relax works fine; my head will be busy composing its own lines for the characters =P

I’m always amused by those up the ante posts about how little you watched a show before shutting it off. It’s like a seasonal tradition.

I watched through the whole thing with pseudo full attention, though I admit I was instant chatting with a friend at the time. In short, it was fairly boring, and not in the sort of comforting way that Aria is.

Then again, H-game adaptation, didn’t expect much. I think it actually could do better to become even more wholesome, at least to capture that young girl demographic, cause honestly some of the things were kinda cute and the circus show was even mildly impressive, I’d say, just in this almost horrifically wholesome E for Everyone sort of way.

Wasn’t bad enough that I’m not going to watch a couple more episodes, but my hopes are conservative. That said, I like the character design and aesthetic, honestly, which is why I promptly downloaded the HCG set and enjoyed that.. That torrent linked earlier is positively grotesque in size though, so I took the opportunity to convert it all into jpg, 7zip it, and now it’s all of 100mb, unpacked 350 rather than like 2gb and 3gb unpacked.

Enjoy, if you are still reading replies.

Aye, have to agree with you. Usually, when I know that I am going into a show that I expected to be mostly crap, I grab my wife along to watch it with me. She tends to make viewing a better experience simply by being there. Also, thanks for the CG. Gonna talk a look at it. I do like the character design after all :P

The point of a review is to explain to the reader enough about the movie/show so that they can decide wether they will like it or not. Ok…the point of a good review. Or we can get a worthless mass of words that don’t tell us anything but the reviewers opinion. This review is just that. If you don’t like fan service and you don’t like the sound of squiky japanese girls then why are you watching this much less reviewing it? Your are nowhere close to an elitist, a casual watcher at best, so of course you would hate this, this is for fan boys. So have a fan boy review it and explain all the reasons a casual watcher would not like it. You must have a fan boy reviewer in your ranks right? The first ep did everything it needed to, introduced all the chracters, had some nice fan service, and was pretty funny and very cute. This kinda of anime is not for mature adults with wives. This is for boys with fantasies. I doubt i’ll be comming back here as you can’t be counted on to give a decent review but drop me an e-mail if you want someone with a lot of free time on their hands who can review these animes you are not fit to.

    • Posted September 14, 2010 at 6:20 am | Permalink

Um, so Impz isn’t fit to review something because he doesn’t like it? It’s ridiculous to insist that something be written up by someone who will like it (“a fan boy”) just because you don’t share his opinion. To do so would paint every show blogged in unrealistically optimistic colors, misleading readers who value the blogger’s opinion into watching a series that they end up disliking. And I’m saying this as someone who thought that the series is half-decent (well, at least up until ep 10.) Your argument boils down to “you didn’t like something I like, therefore you must not be qualified to talk about it.” And that’s absurd.
