Mitsudomoe and Seitokai Yakuindomo – Will they be like Crapanella?

null

After watching the absolute train wreck that is Shukufuku no Campanella, I was in such a terrible rage mode that it might have affected my viewing experience negatively. Will these two anime suffer the same fate as that horrendous show (still in a pretty rage mode).

In the Crapanella defense, it might be as ExecutiveOtaku, our resident anime expert said. Check out the rage-filled (and probably quite mean entry) of Shukufuku no Campanella here.

Note: Not doing summary for these two series. It’s quite hard to do it anyway.

Mitsudomoe

null

This series reminds me of that loli show I watch. No, it is not Kodomo no Jikan, but instead it is more like Ichigo Mashimaro. Except it is crazier and totally outrageous. This episode had three scenes, the first being this take-the-chair-game, the second is on pairing the straight teacher up with the hot health instructor by punching his balls to oblivion (I am not making this up) and the last scene is about a hamster called “Boobs”. All this is also done in a pretty innocent, rather than sexual manner. I find myself chuckling to nuts with all the hilarity happening in the show.

This is a very good first episode in my opinion. It pulls off all the weird stuff and the scenarios are decently realistic (until it goes into the deep end of weirdness, anyway). For a show that felt completely like fanservice galore for the lolicons during the preview entry, it turns out pretty fine in my opinion. The animation is also pretty good surprisingly, and I find myself appreciating the good sound effects and animation quality churned out by Bridge, a totally new animation company. I will be glad if they manage to keep this production level up.

What really shines through for this series are the weird sisters in crime. You have the straightforward but slightly lecherous Futaba, Sadako Hitoha and what I like to call the Mikan of Mitsudomoe, Mitsuba. Honestly, these three playful girls are so much of a handful and their queerness is so weird that it is pretty funny actually. I know that some of the fanservice jokes can get very old very fast, but it manages to hit the right spots. I do agree that there is a scene about the three sisters trying to comfort the male teacher (he is assumed to be a virgin) by kicking him in the balls, impressing the female teacher with his huge dick and then they can have sex. Once again, I swear I ain’t making this thing up.

All in all, it ended up in a situation where the bespectacled health instructor teacher and the boring male teacher combined to make a small dick joke. That was actually quite lame. However, the jokes in the scene hit well sometimes. It can be hit and miss though, particularly to those who hate such fanservice jokes. I will say you should try and at least watch one episode to see if you like it. If you don’t, you probably wouldn’t because it will be more of the same (based on the source material).

Recommendation: 7/10 (Has some good laughs, hilarious three sisters, the other characters are bland)

Seitokai Yakuindomo

null

I was thinking whether this series is a 4koma. It turns out that it is, and man, it is hilarious. I don’t deny that the start of the episode is a total bore, and I was starting to complain to Hana (because the chief complainer, my wife, went to sleep) how this show stinks in the first five minutes. Yes, you might see some similarities to a very recent post, but I generally waste 20 minutes of my time to make sure I didn’t make any bad judgment, even for a show I will rage and even if I force myself not to pay attention.

This is how I reacted at the start of the first few minutes.

Impz: ok this show is not for me…
Impz: but it’s still watchable
Impz: until that crap campella
Impz: (has high levels of tolerance for crap)

This is how I reacted at the end of the episode.

Impz: LOL
Impz: MAKES NO FRICKING SENSE BUT IT’S FUNNY LOL
Impz: I definitely did not expect something so random
Impz: I thought it’s some silly rom com

null

I think that this is the kind of show that runs very thin by the end of the fifth or sixth episode. There are obscene numbers of sexual jokes, which can grate on people. In fact, some of them are so random. I quote you once again from my YIM conversation with Hana. I apologize for the butchering of the English language from my text conversations on Instant messaging.

Impz: like for this scene, the president of the student council deduces that the owner of a lost pink wallet must be a female.
Impz: she didn’t deduce it by the color, she deduced because there’s no condom
Impz: lolz
Impz: …so stupid
Impz: OH GOD…..HAHAHAHA

OR.

Impz: and they have an interview with the journalistic club
Impz: and guess what they use for reference?
Hana: what?
Impz: an AV gravure idol video
Impz: cos they always have interviews before the sex
Impz: LOL

In conclusion, it seems a few bloggers found it a turn off. I actually like it worth watching if only for a few more episodes to see if the jokes will run dry. I do hope not.

Recommendation: 6/10 (Slow start, some rather unfunny jokes but essentially quirky and silly).

Hmm, I would give Mitsudomoe and Seitokai Yakuindomo a try, but I have always been scared of loli’s- I’m not sure, if they are legal or not, lol.

Ermm, it’s not like flirting or sexually pandering them (at least not as much as Kodoma no Jikan). You should think of it as a moe design but hilariously crazy anime series. Perhaps that will make you feel less guilty when watching it. That said, why should you be guilty about watching lolis? It’s not like you are thinking of them in perverted ways…

Completely agree about Mitsudomoe – it really worked (to my surprise) and I found myself laughing quite alot at its utter randomness. The character designs are still hideous though!

Now Seitokai Yakuindomo on the other hand, I thought was easily a competitor to take the worst episode of the season title (up there with Campanella). The jokes didnt work for me and I was pretty much ready to bail 5minutes in. It wasnt the lowbrow humor that turned me off (I liked that in Mitsudomoe), rather it was how lazy and uninspired the execution was – I found the script and acting quite wooden and dull. Although since the episode worked for you, it makes me wonder if maybe I’m being overly critical!

But wait, if I’m the expert doesn’t that make me the elitist according to that charge in the other post? :3 Will the plot twists never end?!

      DUN DUN DUN!

THAT drama series, next episode: EO fights off allegations of elitism by saying how much he likes K-On. Stay tuned to the next episode to find out if he will profess his love for Mitsu?…Or whatever name for those K-On characters.

      • Posted July 4, 2010 at 6:36 pm | Permalink

I liked K-ON season 1, but season 2 kind of felt like it was just riding the moe appeal instead of actually being a comedy. But I still adore Tsumugi (and Sawako-sensei to a lesser degree.)

NEXT EPISODE: Allegations of elitism! A man torn between the sequel season he’s vowed to leave behind and the moe blob he loves! Next time on THAT!

How do they measure up against Minami-ke and SeiZon? From the looks of it, not much…

‘has high levels of tolerance for crap’.

Not me. Ergo, based on our highly intellectual YIM convo alone (well, plus my wariness of lolis and harem comedies in disguise) I will give these two a miss :p

    • Posted July 5, 2010 at 11:00 pm | Permalink

Having a high tolerance for ‘meh’ level shows does help in finding those hidden gems in an otherwise lackluster season (happens more than you think). Well, that and generally going in with no expectations (you’ll seldom be disappointed that way).

Aye, generally, 70-80% (if not 90% of all anime in a season) tends to be pretty much average. As such, a high tolerance of crap helps you have the patience to hunt down stuff such as Dennou Coil. But then, I rather be the only one suffering from this. Watching tons of junk can eat into you.

        • Posted July 6, 2010 at 6:25 pm | Permalink

I wouldn’t say that high tolerance of crap means you get to find stuff like Dennou Coil. It just means that you can watch a crap show for longer before tossing it aside. But if you meant that the first few episodes of Dennou Coil is crap, then yes, it does mean that one couldn’t have realized it was a good show unless they had tolerance.

Mitsudomoe, I tried watching it – though ended up rather disgusted for some reason. Maybe I went in thinking “MOE” and then was presented with generally ugly little girls – and something somewhat nonsensical. In the end, it is probably just not for me.

Seitokai Yakuindomo: A good idea that falls short. There are a lot of cute things about this – and at the same time I feel like it is dragged down somewhat by overused things as well. It has this hollow feel to it – like it is missing the spark that something like Working! has.

    • Impz
      Posted July 6, 2010 at 1:15 am | Permalink

I never bothered with Working to be honest because the first episode really bored me. I can see why you feel that way too. Seitokai can be very disjointed and jarring at times, due to the almost instantaneous transformation of the 4koma to anime without thinking about the differences in presenting the formatting of 4koma and anime. In anime, it is more fluid while 4koma is really more gag/intermittent. That is perhaps why it is hollow, the flow that should be somewhat around in anime is just not there. I still find it ok because I am quite tolerable.

      • Posted July 7, 2010 at 8:09 am | Permalink

‘Tis a sin, I say. Working!! might not be groundbreaking for a 4koma Comedy, but it’s surprisingly endearing, and its likable cast of characters help a lot. I recommend it, the same way I recommended it to Epi (Seaslugs) and Rakuen.

It takes a few episodes for the show to get on its feet though — indeed, I’d say it’s only after episode 4 (hence failing the 3-episode test for many people) where it hits its stride.

Mistudomoe = Are you a tween or a tween-demographic pedophile? Did you watch Gainax’s Hanamaru Kindergarten but want a darker, not as well written story? If your answer is yes, something is wrong with you. If your answer is no, go outside! There are more important things to do during summer than watch tepid anime.

Not really. I think it is really going in with cheesy jokes that are generally harmless in the age group. If anything, that is a very black and white view on things. That said, it is hard to critique and compare an entire series with a single episode. I think for a start, it is a very nice and interesting anime. I don’t think it is particularly offensive, and it is the type of anime you come back from a long day of work, turn off your brain and laugh at silly kids. Quite the therapeutic experience.

      • Posted July 6, 2010 at 9:35 am | Permalink

Certainly fair. My criticism is completely subjective. I just found it dull, predictable and juvenile, which isn’t entirely unfair, considering the show is about kids.

I think I’m turned off more by the nurse/ love interest. Objectively, she isn’t a character. (at least, not yet) She is a vehicle for making vision jokes and over heard but misunderstood conversation jokes. I don’t find the class’ teacher much more interesting.

While it’s totally unfair to shoot the show down after one ep, there’s so much out there to stream (and review) that I’m losing my patience for anything that doesn’t excite me right away. More so since it’s summer and there are plenty of things to do outside.

I’m just gonna blame it on Sekirei: Pure Engagement ;) just started my sumer season on the wrong foot and I’ll be moody till fall

Also, i tend to be black and white in my reviews, if only to make a clear impression. My readers tend to spend less than 30 seconds reading what i’ve said. Any more and I’d wonder if they’d died at their beyboards, which makes my review all the more meaningless :)

Oh my, pure engagement for your first summer show? NO WONDER you are having such a raging mood over something like Mitsudomoe. I have to agree with you that certain characters can just make a pretty decent show so darn terrible. It’s like School Rumble. It’s like a very awesome but Tenma made me hate it so much that nothing in it can hold me to watch it. So I can understand why ^^

Pft, that’s nothing. He hasn’t watched all seasons so far of Shin Koihime Musou like I have.

            Yes, I have weird tastes.
