Shiki Episode 10: 101 Sotoba Survivalist Guide: No rest for Natsuno. And his father.

I didn’t know that Natsuno has super vision, being able to see through walls or anything. After all, he’s a Vampire Hunter.

Changed my usual hairstyle a bit, with the help of my mother making most of the changes. Feel like being a little lazy during the weekend, unfortunately for me, I fail to procrastinate (for your weekly dose of Shiki reviews only) due to the little comments contributed in the previous episode’s review. So that means I have to write a lot better in this week’s post.

This time, we go back to Natsuno’s side of things. Things aren’t going so well for him, with his father trying to talk some sense into him about vampires roaming around the village, to make matters worse his father is a complete fatass atheist.

Natsuno’s mother was trying to serve some tea to creepy little Shizuka, still awake after waiting for Natsuno for a long time as far I presume. Flashback to a couple of nights before their raid to capture Setsuko, catboy orders his (Or rather, the strange Kirishikis) army of 8 to go after her and of course, aware of Toshio discovering their little ‘secret’.

Wearing shades in the middle of the night? Hmm.

Returning back the present time, Natsuno has finally come home and his parents told him about Shizuka entering the house, waiting for dear Natsuno to come home and suck him dry talk to him. Oh dear. When Natsuno soon finds out that Shizuka’s already in his room, that spells trouble~, not before telling his parents never let anyone into his room again. I guess it’s too late for you to say that, Natsuno-kun. But upon entering his room, Shizuka was gone. And this means war raging from Natsuno’s side too when we find out the vampires’ plans to get their hands upon Natsuno.

Natsuno is mine!!!!! No one can go near him, even you catboy!

Yes, Megumi’s not glad one bit seeing Natsuno dead. Saying hurtful words to an undead Nao (Telling her that neither Mikiyasu or Susumu became vampires), I’m glad to see neither of them rises up, spells a big mess for the entire family. Megumi tries doing that ‘task’ to Tatsumi, but he disagree with her opinions and make sure she stays away from trouble (and that is why the ruthless Shizuka was asked to take this job.) Got to see someone Natsuno holds dearly very soon…

Yes, not even your friends or family members, or anyone you know, or vampires, or the Kirishikis.

Seeing his son paste wooden crosses and those Japanese-relic-like paper all over his room after spending the night with his wife making a new chair for Natsuno, he goes paranoid and just so you know, Natsuno’s father is an atheist and hates religious things hanging around anywhere, especially in his son’s room. Natsuno then warned the Tanaka siblings about letting strangers into the house since he didn’t want them to be the next victims and that Natsuno is not safe anymore from the vampires after his parents has recklessly (and scared) let Shizuka enter their house.

Because this scares the hell out of me, and I’m too stupid to know that sooner or later, my son’s going to land himself into a mine field and my wife…oh crap.

Natsuno asked his father about the crosses and sacred papers he placed all across his room, and his father wasn’t too happy seeing his son being a religious person all so suddenly, and also, it’s stupid. Thanking his father for the new chair, Natsuno now has more things to worry about. Now waiting for vampires to come attack in his room, meanwhile Megumi tries to save Natsuno from his inevitable doom, until she saw something, or someone she knew. Could it be…

C’mon…c’mon…you know who is it by now, readers…

A vampire tries entering Natsuno’s house in the middle of the night through the window and when his/her attempt fails, Natsuno knew right away that (s)he will enter through the door since his parents let vampire Shizuka into the house several nights before. Finding the door was unlocked, our dear hero then realizes that his father had done that, since he first arrived in the village (and that there’s no crime happening in this village, WRONG.). At the same time, we found out about Natsuno’s past upon arriving here (not much to reveal, but), giving us the reason why Natsuno’s real last name is Koide, from his mother’s side and not Yuuki in the official birth certificate.

So cute! Seeing baby Natsuno in a teddy suit is a must for all fangirls like me to cuddle!

Furthermore, we now know that Natsuno’s parents aren’t the regular parents we usually know (they reject the norms of Japan’s usual society, say like the above example in the above paragraph.) and finally, this makes Natsuno determine that ever to get out of the cursed village, get into college in a big city and be free from his parents’ control of his life. Clicking himself back to reality, he found the vampire turning back to his/her starting point and calls Natsuno by his name. As he hears the voice calling his name, you should know that this person is his best friend, has blonde hair and is nice to everyone. Guess who he is. And Natsuno is stuck between keeping the windows locked at all times and opening the window, which would suck if he does that. Don’t open, don’t open…no…noooo..NNNOOO!!

Toru Mutou, human vampire.

Toru runs away after seeing Natsuno again eye-to-eye. While looking for Natsuno, Megumi met across Toru, who was shaking with fear as he was not brave enough to see his friend again and take Natsuno down, which Megumi mocks him of his cowardly act. With threats of attacking Aoi and Tatmosu by catboy, Toru was actually forced to accept the job of taking Natsuno down. Can’t stand Toru acting like a cowardly lion, she decides to take Natsuno down instead, no matter the consequences.

Stuck between friend and family, which will be choose?

Remembering all the good times he had when Toru was still human as he searches for him in the woods, Megumi is still stalking for him as always, after she dies. So Tatsumi decides to face Natsuno directly and calling Megumi to help him, it seems that Natsuno is in a dead end until Toru enters the stage and bite him, much to Megumi’s dismay and Tatsumi’s amazement. It seems that Natsuno’s going to be on the vampires’ side sooner or later…to be continued.

Well, better to let Megumi or Tatsumi get you out of this mess, huh?

You know what, this series keeps getting better and better every episode. It’s unpredictable, which is quite rare to find in most series these days and who knows if our main characters will truly survive the ordeals of fighting against vampires, or themselves. Oh, yes, this episode gives you more reasons to hate Megumi, but where’s Masao after all this time?

Natsuno Yuuki, Vampire Hunter ready for action! (with a spanner/wrench up on my sleeve.)

Seriously, Natsuno’s father should stop following his selfish beliefs and try thinking about his son and wife to begin with. Otherwise the only road left for him is despair. Hmm, it seems that happy endings aren’t available at this moment and I’m sure that you guys will be glad with a downer ending with all the villagers all dead and the vampires won the battle, or with a crazy Ozaki becoming a full-time hardcore vampire hunter and dies. Of course, these are just basic assumptions (didn’t bother to read the Chinese scans, which comes way ahead of the English ones.) and I have no idea how things about going to end. I hope Ozaki and Kaori/Akira would do something quick to counterattack, otherwise it’s boring to see the vampires winning all the time.

Don’t forget to drop by and leave your comments below!

And what the hell? Sooner or later Sotoba’s gonna die by itself with vampires roaming around freely. It sucks to be you, Natsuno’s father. No wonder Natsuno has little respect for you now.

I totally agree that this show gets better week by week. I will admit though that I lol’d a lot while Natsuno was delivering his fangirl rant about Toru, and how it JUST WASN’T FAIR to make him a vampire. I just thought they were a little bit heavy-handed trying to make sure to get that delicious boys-love vibe going. Also, am I the only Megumi fan out there? Seems like everyone hates her while I’ve been hoping she gets what she wants…Maybe I just have a thing for the “girl with issues” type?

Episode 10 = BEST EPISODE YET. It’s rare to have a series where the cliffhangers are true cliffhangers and just about anything can happen. LOVE IT~

Where IS Masao? Off plotting something? Too wimpy to kill another human so he died again? Oh well, I don’t care about him. All that matters is Tohru being back and getting to be Natsuno’s first….bite. I still can’t believe he got bitten less than halfway through the series…I thought this would’ve happened wayyy later.

YAY! Toru’s back! And I knew there was at least one other reason why he’s so likeable – just realised that he’s voiced by Nobuhiko Okamoto, the same seiyuu who voices Usui in Maid-sama!; I love that teasingly deep but boyish voice of his. Or, rather, boyishly emo in this epi’s case.

I also agree that this show gets more and more awesome – LOVE IT! :D

That was one heck of a cliffhanger. I can’t wait for the next episode. This show has really gotten much better since the ‘bumbling doctor’ became just another normal main character.

I was STUNNED when Tohru came out and bit Natsuno. I thought for sure he was going to go for the self-sacrifice and take Natsuno away from Megumi and Tatsumi, but he just goes and takes a bite instead. Who the heck is gonna be our main character now, Ozaki? I really hope not.

this episode gives you more reasons to hate Megumi

hate?! MOAR LUV 4 MEGUMI~ I guess I’m the weird one here cuz my friends mostly hate her, but I can’t get enough of her. I still can’t really explain why, but I just find her really enjoyable :3

I do realized that most people hate whiny and irritating people in quite a lot of shows. Probably that’s why Megumi’s (or Masao, for some people) easier to hate than the other characters in the cast. But if you turn the table on the other side, most people do admire people who can control their feelings much more than people who gets emotional. Which I think it’s a little unfair, since everyone is different; and you can’t expect anyone to be the same to have good control their emotions. That’s what I think, but sadly it seems to be that way in various shows, games and manga. People do tend to hate whiny, annoying people more than others with different attitudes.

To be fair, I hate Masao and I usually hate those characters that whine and yet do nothing constructive. If they’re whining but are making changes to try to correct whatever’s going wrong, ok, but if they’re just whining cuz ‘life isn’t fair’ or whatever, ugh. Yet I still found Megumi rather charming, which is why I said I can’t really explain it.

didnt read the manga, but anyone else got a flag out of the waterthingie?
he talks alot about the holy water and when toru is biting him, it looks like toru forces him to drink some water. Maybe this will neglect the vampire virus and this was Torus plan?

Ugh, since college started back up again, I’ve been so behind on watching anime.

Thanks for the continued blogging of this show!!

I’ll agree with Hana. Toru was definitely the highlight of this ep. :)
