Amagami SS episode 21, Tsukasa arc part I – Ayatsuji Tsukasa Will F***ing Kill You!

The Queen has come to lift us up (by our ties)! With anger and drama until the end! Who could ever doubt? We have faith! The long awaited (and my most anticipated, personally) Tsukasa arc is upon us, and after a fairly average first part of the episode comes DAT ENDING. It seems that the Amagami team has saved the best for the first and last arcs with Haruka and now the possibly yandere Tsukasa. Good times ahead!

Definitely saved some of the animation budget for last too.

In contrast to the fast forward in the Rihoko arc, the episode opens with an extended flashback to the year before. Haruka was apparently the reigning beauty contest champion, which seems to explain her moment of reprising the costume back in the Kaoru arc. Junichi is pretty upset but fortunately has Umehara show up and show himself to be the good friend that he is. Tsukasa also has a less than uplifting time that Christmas as she watches all the couples and says to herself that next year, for certain, she’ll find someone. Skip forward a year and Tsukasa once again volunteers, but now Junichi as well suddenly steps up to help. The newest Junichi had a lot of sighing and feeling depressed about Christmas, but like Junichi mk I, I’d rather have a slightly emo iteration instead of the fairly bland ones from the middle three arcs. And I liked how Junichi mk VI kind of had a surge of determination starting with Umehara’s boast and continuing on with volunteering. Contrast that to Junichi mk I who just generally seemed to be in a funk and took an opportunity that came to him instead of actively seeking one out.

She is the champion! Of the world!

*raises hand*

Good man! The Mobile Infantry Founder’s Festival Committee made me the man I am today!

“They’re always getting friendzoned! Togo must have gotten friendzoned by one of his childhood friends! That doesn’t mean he can f*** with my anime damn it!”

The two start working together and Tsukasa seems impressed that Junichi would volunteer since no one else even bothered. She even takes him to the supply closet with the door that only opens when you push down on the handle from the outside. Where accidentally closing it would trap the two of them in together. Oh yes. And trapped they become until Miya and Sae show up looking for more animal costumes. The whole play thing just makes me think of Miya and Sae and Sae and Hiro from Hidamari Sketch, especially since Sae looks a fair bit like Hiro. When the two committee volunteers walk home we get the first clear signs of Ayatsuji’s dark side when she runs into her older sister. Yukari seems nice enough, but Tsukasa is showing some more Haman face when she sees her and then makes an excuse to leave her and Junichi. Maybe she’s angry about Yukari stealing Junichi’s attention? (Not that I’d blame him, heh.) Or maybe it’s part of a larger younger sister complex, feeling like no matter what she does her sister can always swoop in and get all the glory/attention/the guy.

Welcome to Tsukasa’s den of love. No, you can’t escape (her love!).

Helllllo baaaaby!

Watch your back Yukari, she knows where you sleep.

Junichi finds out that Tsukasa is even covering extra swim lessons for students like Kaoru who’ve skipped out on them. And as he goes to find her to ask questions about how to do committee work, there’s another trademark Haruka scene theft. Haruka is creeping around the edges of the pool to peep on the other girls when Junichi runs into her. You have to wonder about her without Junichi mk I around, though Hibiki tries her best to keep tabs on her. Back in the classroom Junichi finds a notebook and starts flipping through it looking for the name of the owner. Just then Tsukasa notices something missing and is so alarmed that she runs back to the room still in her swimsuit. It turns out that the book was Tsukasa’s mirai nikki Death Note schedule book, complete with intricately planned out activities. Yandere mode: ON. When Junichi replies that he did see a bit of it, his fate is sealed. With a speed and accuracy reminiscent of Alphard, in an instant she’s holding Junichi by his tie and her shoulder poised to leverage him for a slam throw to the ground. HELL YEAH! This arc is going to be sweet! I thought Tsukasa seemed the most interesting back when the series was announced, but I had no idea! She also has quite the ED sequence in terms of visuals and lyrics, though the singing is pretty terrible unfortunately.

Pool Haruka is watching you stretch.

Is Ayatsuji Tsukasa going have to choke a bitch? I..I don’t want to, but these people they read my notebook and, and I just….

Tsukasa is a Newtype? I hope there are as many schemes and (romance equivalent of) deaths as Zeta Gundam!

Amagami, how did you know all my weaknesses?

Everyone knows Mobile Infantry (Junichi) and Fleet (Tuskasa) don’t mix.

Although I have been looking forward to this one after the Haruka and Karou’s arcs. I do have an affinity for more mature women, this one will probably be the bigger challenge than all the others put together. But its always fun trying to get to the heart of a yandere, blackmailing type character that is not inherently mean, but has particular barriers that need to be broken down to win over.

    • Posted November 28, 2010 at 9:44 pm | Permalink

Tsukasa’s definitely fleet, or maybe a psy user.

I like that she’s a more mature character, but also has the interesting angle of either being a yandere or just someone who just isn’t that nice at present. Seeing how this plays out will be interesting either way.

(Oh, and just for reference back, back when the series previews were released my order of interest was: Tsukasa, Kaoru, Rihoko, Haruka, Ai, Sae. Though with most of the arcs over, the ones I enjoyed most were Haruka, Rihoko, Kaoru, Sae, Ai. What are your’s? I’m curious to see how everyone ranked the characters before and after the series started.)

First: Kaoru, Ai, Haruka, Tsukasa, Rihoko, Sae.
Now: Kaoru (I am biased for her), Haruka/Tsukasa, Rihoko, Ai, Sae.
Cold Point of View: Haruka/Tsukasa, Rihoko, Kaoru, Ai, Sae.

Huh? looks like you never expected anything from Ai, hahahaha!

Before: Tsukasa, Sae (didn’t know DAT VOICE would persist through the whole arc or the fact that her character was paralysingly shy the whole time), Haruka, Ai, Kaoru, Rihoko
After: Tsukasa (I’m guessing), Haruka, Rihoko, Ai, Kaoru, Sae

I like that she’s more mature as well.

        In terms of favorite arcs:
        1. Haruka
        2. Kaoru
        3. Ai
        4. Sai
        5. Rihoko
Of course I think if Tsukasa’s arc goes well it could dethrone 1 or 2 depending upon how well it was written and if the ending is compete or not. I liked Kaoru, but gave her a 2 because the ending was a bit rushed compared against as Haruka’s arc. Plus Junichi going for the most popular girl in school in the most kinky way was an interesting way to introduce the series.

I think Tsukasa does not fit the Yandere title. She is not the nice that will break; she is actually a “bad” person that needs to be redirected. Obviously she is not a Tsundere either.

What a dumb sister, no wonder Tsukasa is angry at life… but she is cute and a truly nice person, the problem is that “nice” and “reliable” are 2 different things.

“Nah, She is just my childhood friend”

Ah yes, in other news “Kitto Ashita Wa…” by Rina Satou won the Lectro Volpi Academy Award for best ending, what is yours Mr. ExecutiveOtaku?

    Thanks for the review.

It may be too early to call yandere or ‘bad’, but either way I’m really interested and excited to see how it goes.

As far as the series ED sequences: Tsukasa’a is my favorite for visuals, definitely. As for the music itself, while Sae’s always brought a smile to my face and Kaoru’s had the best singing, I liked the ending song to the Rihoko arc the best.

Hahah… Tsukasa remind me of sangou shizuku for her manipulative, 2faced president, and a sadists… Just like haruka Arc, This arc so exciting also finally i saw junichi first experience with his Intense & rollercoaster romance. P.S i cant wait for secret boss Arc

It’ll certainly be a fun ride. Don’t mess this up, AIC!

There’s still the matter of that extra episode on the series schedule. Is Tsukasa going to get one more episode that the others? Or will it be some sort of bonus? I’m hoping for the former.

The tie grabbing scene reminded me of Hitagi and Araragi from Bakemonogatari.
    “Don’t say anything or I’ll kill you…”

This is going to be an interesting arc. I’m hoping Umehara will get a girlfriend by the end of this series too actually since he seems to have had a few moments with some women.

    • Posted November 28, 2010 at 9:59 pm | Permalink

Definitely with you on the Umehara bit. He’s had some moments with Keiko and Kanae, and even Kaoru could be a contender outside of her arc. While the series hasn’t drawn all that much from its KimiKiss predecessor, I would like an extra episode focused on him like the ‘Love Fighter’ extra shed some light on Akira and Megumi.

Well I’m not sure whether Umehara would have enough attraction as the main character but he’d be a good side character story. I think Kanae would be a good one to pair him. She’s friends with Rihoko but Rihoko has her tea club friends. Kanae still addresses her by her last name, despite the fact that she breaks into Rihoko’s room to wake up her. Keiko and Kaoru seem close and to break up the pairing would be sad in my eyes. (male Kaoru! lol)

Great start to the arc, but I also think there are a lot of challenges to doing this one. The ending of the episode was nothing short of awesome and I hope they keep it up. The whole older sister thing caught my attention quite a bit since it was out of her usual character. My guess is that she doesn’t want anyone too close to her and her sister might know some things about her she doesn’t want Junichi to know. All in all a very satisfying episode, didn’t expect to be so hyped up for the next one.

You know I kind of wonder now why Ayatsuji was uptight about the notebook at all. Scheduling in neat handwriting? How is that embaressing?! I guess we’ll find out next week.

Yukari does seem like a well to do person although there are many things she may and may not be. Hard to tell on the first encounter. I agree though, she probably knows her sister the best and can spill anything on purpose or accidently. I too am excited for the next one too.

I’m pretty sure Junichi only skimmed the first bit of the notebook, so its my guess that Ayatsuji is misunderstanding and thinks he has read what I can only assume is something damaging to her reputation. I would like it if they didn’t reveal what that embarrassing thing written in her notebook really was though since its more fun to have some unknown/mysterious things about Ayatsuji.

Maybe she has plans to kill someone but needed to fit it in her schedule.

day1) Trap prey in supply room.

          JUST AS PLANNED!

        • Posted November 28, 2010 at 10:04 pm | Permalink

I paused and skimmed the notebook too, but from a quick look I didn’t see anything out of the ordinary. Just normal things that would be on a schedule like going shopping, heading home, school work, etc. Maybe there’s something juicier in that screencap, but I didn’t really want to spend a lot of time translating every line when it seemed pretty mundane. If there was anything more exciting, it didn’t pop out to me (or Junichi.)

Yukari might know something that Tsukasa doesn’t want known. Probably something that would damage her image, but that’s not so straightforward as it would seem. It could be just something slightly embarrassing that would break her perfect image at school (think: Yukino from Kare Kano), or it could be a bigger, more troubling piece of information. Or just a threat to the attention Tsukasa wants to herself. We’ll have to wait and see, but it sounds like it’s going to be good either way.

It was so brief, I didn’t think her fans would begrudge me the omission. Apparently I underestimated you lot!

  7. Posted November 28, 2010 at 12:41 am | Permalink

her sister can always swoop in and get all the glory/attention/the guy.

You know, I was wondering about that actually. I’m curious to find out more about her older sister and if she ninja’d a potential boyfriend or two from Tsukasa (whether intentional or not). Or if Tsukasa just doesn’t like Yukari’s style/attitude. She’s obviously a lot more relaxed than Tsukasa and maybe a little bit airheaded.

Not that I’d blame him, heh.

Yeah, me either. Damn, I’d have a hard time deciding between the two Ayatsuji sisters too. If I had known Tsukasa had an older sister that looked like that… mmm, that’s a tough choice.

in an instant she’s holding Junichi by his tie and her shoulder poised to leverage him for a slam throw to the ground. HELL YEAH!

HELL YEAH! pretty much says it. Daaaaaamn this is gonna be good :3

I’m surprised she just went in for the kill though. It seems like Junichi didn’t see anything important, or maybe he didn’t let on that he did, but she could’ve easily just covered it up or tried to smooth it over somehow. But I’m not complaining, this method is much more entertaining.

I can’t believe you didn’t mention the blushing Tsukasa right at the very end of the preview for next episode. Gah, is it Thursday yet? I need some more context for THAT short little tease.

I’m surprised too at the lack of Miya screenshots. She ALMOST pulled off a perfect (yet unintentional) wingman move to help Junichi along. Too bad she came back and re-opened the door.

EDIT: Knew I forgot something. Oh my god that friendzoned video. My friend and I were nearly in tears for the entire video. Pure awesome~

I don’t think Yukari ninja’ed one of Tsukasa’s old boyfriends (at least it doesn’t appear that way to me [yet]), But I was thinking more in line to what noodleCup mentioned that perhaps she had tried to be with a guy and when they found out that she’s not who she seems, they run away. Yukari probably knows Tsukasa’s real self which may explain why Yukari was a bit surprised she was able to “keep a guy around.” This is just speculation of course.

    • Posted November 28, 2010 at 10:10 pm | Permalink

Refer to an above reply for the details, but in a quick look at the shot where Junichi holds up the notebook I didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary. Though I didn’t take the time to read/translate all of it by any means, it just seemed routine and not worth breaking out the dictionary for the kanji I don’t know.

Her sister is definitely an interesting new factor in the situation. She could spill the beans on something embarrassing or something troubling, she could threaten to steal the spotlight, or maybe Tsukasa has a good or at least understandable reason for disliking her as a person. All I know is I’m dying to find out how it plays out.

I laughed through the whole “Hitler finds out…” video too. Best anime-related parody I’ve seen in quite some time (even if I think the Rihoko arc’s ending was decent and implied the eventual BEST END.)

Kinda amazing how many people feel able to diagnose “Yandere” after a girl unexpectedly takes a threatening stance. Just like 99% of anime fans would diagnose “tsundere” after a girl chews a male character out while she’s fundamentally kind to him. Yay for cliché!

Ayatsuji is neither Yandere, nor is she a “Bad” person at all. She does have a very peculiar personality, warped by certain circumstances which remain to be shown. I strongly suggest not to put her into a box and categorize her before you know exactly what’s making her tick, and that won’t be anytime soon.

    • Posted November 28, 2010 at 10:14 pm | Permalink

Oh jeez, you’re not going to give me the yandere equivalent of Shiraishi’s tsundere speech, are you? :P

I’m still open minded about what sort of character Tsukasa is, even if I do enjoy bringing up the possible yandere tendencies. I think there’s been enough to here so far to think that she’s not just an archetype.

Okay, then let’s resume this discussion when we’re through the anime. Just for the record, based on the game and manga I find it very hard to understand why she’d be a “bad” girl.

      • Posted November 28, 2010 at 10:19 pm | Permalink

Yes, please continue being careful with the spoilers you two. Much appreciated.

    • Posted November 28, 2010 at 10:18 pm | Permalink

Yeah, after going through the arcs I was thinking for awhile on what style to use. I’ve always stuck to some sort of structure, but I’ve noticed that a lot of bloggers don’t. So I figured I’d try shooting from the hip this time and writing in a sort of stream of consciousness style as many others do. Though old habits die hard so I’ve retained a sort of timeline structure to what I talk about, matched up to the order of events in the episode. It still feels a bit awkward, but the whole point of this Amagami experiment is to push myself to try new styles.

I’m not sure what Tsukasa’s primary motivation is, but I’m having a lot of fun trying to guess and imagine what it might be. Good stuff, this arc.

  10. Posted November 28, 2010 at 3:00 am | Permalink

What I liked most was Tsukasa watching his interactions with the various girls like Rihoko, Kaworu and even Miya – he’s very open and forward with them, a complete contrast to the way he is so deferential to her. Makes me wonder if she’s seen something in those interactions that has piqued her interest.

Shizu-sama is wonderful as always – Haruka was the perfect balance of naughty and just a bit pervy while admiring the girls at the pool. And LOLOL at her being dragged away by Hibiki yet again.

Also really nice to see Maya in Home Room Teacher mode – though I was disappoint that there was no mention of her famous Amazake episode from the previous Founder’s Festival.

    • Posted November 28, 2010 at 10:22 pm | Permalink

That’s an interesting observation. The only two triggers I saw were the overt ones of Junichi volunteering and then reading the notebook. But you could be right about something subtler in her watching Junichi in between the two.

Considering how much you’d see Maya and Tsukasa together during the festival and festival planning in the other arcs, I’m expecting her to be a little more prominent this arc. Unless of course Junichi takes over for her in helping Tsukasa. But I’m hoping for the former, because we always need more Takahashi-sensei!

  11. Posted November 28, 2010 at 4:58 am | Permalink

Since I discover Tsukasa’s “true nature” I have always wondered how everything will happen. I waited almost six months for seeing Tsukasa Ayatsuji, and now I have everything in my hand. But I thought that the character of Yukari Ayatsuji was a parody of Tsukasa herself, and that was really unexpected. And the beginnings was also really gorgeous, especially if you continue watching Haruka’s shenanigans.

But how everything will end? I am definitely looking forward for the rest of the Final Arc, especially, and I hope I am not the only one to think so… Especially because I saw the ending of Rihoko Sakurai ending pretty disappointing. Original, I admit, but very lame for that lovely story.

    • Posted November 28, 2010 at 10:24 pm | Permalink

I’ve been looking forward to this arc since the previews for Amagami came out, so you’re not alone in that. I think it’s been many people’s most anticipated arc, and it’s off to a great start.

As for Rihoko’s arc, it was a sweet story that could have used a more definitive ending. I went and watched the game ending on youtube and I wish that the anime had done something like that. Sure, the GOOD END is implied in the ending of Rihoko’s arc (at least in my view), but it would have been nice to see it too.

Fantastic. I so enjoy being back to active watching after so many arcs of only decent passive entertainment (sometimes). It feels great to be excited and curious about what’s going to happen next. I’m now very glad I didn’t spoil myself by taking a look at any of the manga. I hope she’s not really yandere, and it didn’t actually seem that way to me at all in the first place.

My guess is that the notebook probably contains some not-too-flattering opinions on other people, and/or personal reflections that would destroy the image she’s tried so hard to create in school. If I thought someone had potentially seen any of that, I would’ve had a similar reaction; but wouldn’t consider myself a yandere. I mean, what else could you do?

Maybe it’s just wishful thinking on my part…hoping for a more nuanced personality than her being the BAD person that others seem to think/know is the case. You haven’t read the manga either right?

    • Posted November 28, 2010 at 10:31 pm | Permalink

While I enjoyed the Rihoko arc a lot, thought Kaoru’s was ok, and got good laughs from Sae’s, it is good to be back in a drama romance mindset again. Things haven’t really been this way since the Haruka arc. Yandere or not, this ought to be a very interesting arc.

Haven’t read the manga either since I didn’t want any spoilers beforehand. Maybe after the arc is over I’ll read it. Amagami SS has had it’s ups and downs, but one thing it hasn’t done is force its characters into strict archetypes. While I may be enthusiastic for Tsukasa’s potential yandere-like traits, I don’t think she’ll be shoehorned into just playing that role or anything. The notebook might have had something in it on another page (I didn’t see anything out of the ordinary written there), or it could be some intense trust or privacy issue with Tsukasa. Maybe the notebook is just a symbol to her of those issues, and having someone else get into her personal space (in an abstract way) is enough to get her really angry.

Still Tsukasa is the final boss and while I am sure she lacks the lethality of Alphard onee-sama let us pray that she is a harsh mistress so that Rihoko will be avenged. May the wounds she inflicts on Junichi be lasting and PAINFUL.

Still I wanna see Miya’s play for I am sure it will be most yurilicious.

    • Posted November 28, 2010 at 10:34 pm | Permalink

Et tu comrade? Wow, I really underestimated the demand for Miya screencaps. Lesson learned.

I must be quite the optimist, but I felt that the Rihoko arc ending implied the GOOD END, just that it would be a protracted endeavor and only come to fruition during their third year of high school. But I wouldn’t mind Tsukasa giving Junichi a GERMAN SUPLEX just for being so dense about Rihoko.

Despite the GOOD END the lack of kissu was down right criminal there should be a limit on how thick a man can be… Rihoko deserves more and I for one hope that Junichi will pay dearly for his past alternate self’s transgressions.

Kind of got the feeling that the older sister may have some sort of problem (my guess is mentally). Tsukasa seemed surprised that her sister was out of their home, and when she left she was pushing/dragging her sister along. Tsukasa could have some resentment towards her sister because of this, and may consider her to be a shameful secret. Tsukasa’s rigid schedule would reveal how she has to take care of her sister, thus provoking her… “strong” response.
Really looking forward to next week’s ep. “HER EYES”

    • Posted November 28, 2010 at 10:37 pm | Permalink

Wow, I think mental disability might be a little too heavy for Amagami, hehe. This isn’t some Key drama :P

However, there are a number of reasons that Tsukasa might not want her sister around her and/or Junichi. Yukari might spout of something embarrassing, thereby ruining Tsukasa’s image. Or maybe Yukari knows how her sister really is and will let that out. Other possibilities might be that Yukari would steal Tsukasa’s attention or guy, or that Tsukasa just really doesn’t mesh well with her sister’s more relaxed attitude. She does seem pretty high-strung, in contrast to Yukari.

  15. Posted November 28, 2010 at 9:15 pm | Permalink

And so it begins. A lot of material here, but of course DAT ENDING! I’ve heard people say that the best arc hands down in the Amagami game was Tsukasa’s, so I have high hopes. You can’t screw this up AIC. Or else you know who’ll be knocking on your door…

    • Posted November 28, 2010 at 10:43 pm | Permalink

Tsukasa is the ‘flagship character’ for the Amagami game, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they put in some extra effort on her story. And they had better, considering that her’s seems to be one of, if not the, most anticipated arcs in the series.

I’m looking forward to this so much! It’s been so long since this show has been so exciting (even if I did enjoy the Rihoko arc quite a bit.)

    • Posted November 29, 2010 at 3:59 pm | Permalink

I’ve heard that every girl’s route was the best, heh. But I’ve seen Kaoru’s mentioned most (and it inspired the most RAGE because her anime arc was a let-down in comparison).

  16. Posted November 29, 2010 at 6:14 am | Permalink

Ahh, easily the most anticipated arc finally makes it. I is pleased. And never have I been so anxious to find out what’ll happen in episode 22.

Ayatsuji almost reminds me of Miyazawa from Kare Kano; two faces, but is desperate to be the sweet innocent, yet finds herself almost aroused and excited by playing the masochist. She’s no yandere, but is she a tsundere? Hmm, can’t really tell.

But actually, I think the two are a perfect match. Junichi has found himself a catch, but Ayatsuji is just a poor girl who wants to be loved.

An actual conflict?! In my Amagami? What is this I am watching?

Honestly, I’m glad they’re doing something exciting, because Tsukasa is the plainest character, both in looks and personality (followed closely by Ai). I think the creators of the game knew this, and gave her something meatier.

That video makes me laugh. Every. Time. That Hitler guy couldn’t have been that bad if loved Rihoko that much, right? Heh, “Tell them to do it twice.”

And on Rihoko getting the Good End…well, in Amagami, Good End doesn’t mean good end. The endings of Amagami are named…oddly, somewhat. The Good End is when Junichi asks out a girl that’s not at lover status yet – ie, just a friend (indeed, it is sometimes called the Best Friends End). So yah, friendzoning can definitely be implied by a Good End, as is the case here. And Bad Ends aren’t necessarily bad either. Sure, Haruka Bad End is bad for Junichi, and Sae Bad End is bad for Sae, but Rihoko Bad End I wouldn’t say is necessarily bad for either of them (the Ai Bad End was put on the end of the anime, even – the thing at the beach!).

I like how everyone’s hugely surprised by Junichi volunteering. Even the sleepy girl behind him was in rapt attention for astonishment. And Tsukasa mentioned TWICE how surprised she was.

I don’t think there’s any question about Haruka now. She’s been getting more sapphic every arc, and now is hard gay – and it wasn’t even Ai!. Hibiki stops her because she doesn’t want her leering at other girls. Interpret that how you will.

Kaoru knows about the SEX HAIR. I kinda wanted to see it wet…

Tsukasa obviously hasn’t choked too many dudes yet. If you want strangulation, you pull the bottom/short/thin part, not the top one; that just makes the knot tighter – and looser around the neck, as seen here.

Usually if you discover someone’s secrets, you’re the one doing the blackmailing. Tsukasa is just that scary.

Haha, so agreed on Haruka. There needs to be a 2nd season of Amagami SS with a Haruka/Hibiki Shoujou Ai arc, IMHO.

“They’re always getting friendzoned! Togo must have gotten friendzoned by one of his childhood friends! That doesn’t mean he can f*** with my anime damn it!”

I still dont know what it means… who’s Togo?
