2011 Winter Anime Season Preview

Not that I need an excuse to post something HidaSketch…

A bit delayed, but welcome to our winter season 2011 preview post. We’ve all been rather busy at this time of year but we hope you’ll look forward to the upcoming season together with us. Preview information comes from Scamp’s Winter 2011 chart, Neregate’s chart, ANN, MAL, and/or Wikipedia. Except I changed the names back to Japanese from the English translations in Scamp’s chart…just to irk him!

The traditional disclaimer:

A Message from the NKVD: Well its time once again to point out this is a preview, and not a review. That “p” makes a difference a very big difference in fact. On another note many of us are old grouchy mean spirited cynics and not wide eyed idealistic fat cat communist NEETs. If you are part of the “animu is SRSfkn business” part of the fandom do yourself a favor and just read the summary from ANN so you can preserve your fragile optimism for your harem animu. Other than that Liberty Prime is watching and ready to initiate directive 7395, destroy all communists.

Beezlebub

Animation Studio: Studio Pierrot (Bleach, Naruto, Yumeiro Patissiere.)
Website: http://www.beelze.jp/
Available Trailers: Trailer 1
Source: Manga adaptation.
Genre: Shounen.
Summary: The story follows the “strongest juvenile delinquent”, Oga Tatsumi, a first year in Ishiyama High  school for delinquents. One day while fishing by the river he sees a man floating down it, he pulls him to shore and the man splits in half revealing a baby boy. This boy is the son of the demon king and he has been chosen as the one to raise it with the baby’s maid Hilda. The story follows his life with the child at the delinquent school.

Writers’ Commentary
ExecutiveOtaku: No interest. This is a shounen show done by THE shounen studio apparently. And I’m not a shounen fan.
Hana: Not my thing either, for the same reasons as EO (though I’ll admit the main guy looks hot). Also, I think somebody should call Social Services.
Chronolynx: I have a weakness for this sort of thing (that is, mindless shounen), so I’ll probably watch it. No interest in blogging it, though.
Mystlord: … Is this the best people can come up with now for a plot line? Come on…
Crusader:  Not into shouta…err shounen
ghostlightning:
Impz: I have followed the manga faithfully despite quite a bit of filler and randomness. If you are looking for some substance/plot, I can assure you that there is none whatsoever. To be honest, I am not too sure why I am following the manga. It might be due to habit.

Dragon Crisis

Animation Studio: Studio DEEN (Simoun, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, Maria Sama ga Miteru.)
Website: http://dragoncrisis.jp/
Available TrailersTrailer 1
Source: Light novel adaptation.
Genre: Action, romantic comedy.
Summary: A high school boy Ryuuji is dragged by his cousin Eriko to rescue a girl from black-market dealers. The blue-eyed “girl” turns out to be a dragon who is inexplicably fixated on Ryuuji – following him even when he is bathing and sleeping. Ryuuji has to protect the girl from the black-market dealers and others.

Writers’ Commentary
ExecutiveOtaku: Seems like a same-old-same-old ‘magical girlfriend’ show. I won’t completely dismiss it based on that, as shows like Kannagi have managed to do great things with that premise (mainly by ignoring the premise), but as it looks now there’s very little chance I’ll be watching this past episode 01.
Hana: ‘…following him even when he is bathing and sleeping’ – Hahahaha…ahahahaha! Not.
Chronolynx: Think I’ll wait for others’ impressions of this after it airs before I decide one way or the other. But it doesn’t look too promising.
Mystlord: O_O Those eyes. They’re… hypnotizing… Directing my attention away from the strangely proportioned hands… Hm wait what were we talking about again? Oh right the show. For some reason I’m getting a vibe that this show will end up like Ookami-san. I won’t watch it to find out though.
Crusader: Dragon Age sounds like so much more fun…
ghostlightning:
Impz: Oh, cute girls. So?

Fractale

Animation Studio: A-1 Pictures and Ordet (Kannagi, Sora no Woto and Black Rock Shooter, respectively.)
Website: http://fractale.noitamina.tv/
Available TrailersTrailer 1
Source: Manga adaptation.
Genre: Science fiction, seinen.
Summary: In the future, the world is managed by a network called the Fractale System. A boy named Crane is living an aimless life with his parents, who are actually computer-generated “Doppels”. One day, he runs into a pretty girl named Furyune, who is being pursued by someone. When he rescues her and helps to keep her hidden from her pursuers, he is pulled into her troubles as well. After meeting her, his life will never be the same!

Writers’ Commentary
ExecutiveOtaku: Sounds like a very interesting premise. Any noitaminA show automatically gets a shot from me as well. Definitely going to be watching to see how it goes, and maybe blogging if I have enough time or if someone else takes season 2 of Kimi ni Todoke.
Hana: Sounds boring, but looks pretty. Hmm. And it’s in the noitami- okay, it gets the 3 epi test from me! (I.e.: might watch, but probably won’t blog.)
Chronolynx: Premise sounds a bit cliche (how many guy-meets-girl, life-is-never-the-same shows are there?), but it could work. It’s noitaminA as well, so it gets a shot by default.
Mystlord: And A-1 returns with a noitamina time slot! Noitamina means I’ll be watching and finishing it. The details provided here are a bit too sparse, but I can’t shake the feeling that I’ll love the series. The show feels very down-to-earth despite its rather sci-fi setting, which always leads to great things.
Crusader: I like their track record and seems curious enough to do a scouting trip…
ghostlightning: noitaminA + Science Fiction = I’m interested. The fact that there is some danger in the form of pursuers makes it even more interesting than the usual introspective shows set in more mundane circumstances. I’ll definitely try this out.
Impz: I will follow this with my wife. It seems like a pretty interesting anime, with some good potential to be a decent shoujo show.

Freezing

Animation Studio: Media Factory (Genshiken, Ikki Tousen)
Website: http://freezing.tv/
Available TrailersTrailer 1 and 2
Source: Manga adaptation.
Genre: Action, science fiction, ecchi, romance.
Summary: Set in a slightly futuristic world where Earth has been invaded and is at war with aliens from another dimension called the Nova, the story follows the adventures of a Japanese boy named Kazuya Aoi who enrolls for training at a special school for genetically modified girls called Pandoras who battle the aliens, and their male partners, called Limiters, who use a special power called “freezing” to limit their opponent’s mobility. The protagonist makes the acquaintance of an unusual older girl named Bridgette L. Satellizer who appears to be the most powerful Pandora in her class, but has not yet chosen a male partner to be her Limiter, and in spite of the warnings of all his friends, he decides to be her Limiter.

Writers’ Commentary
ExecutiveOtaku: Not sure if the neat sci-fi battle sequence can really overcome my distaste for all the skimpy clothing and bouncing boobs. Might give it a three episode test, but I’d say that I’m not likely to watch it past that. If I even make it that far.
Hana: I don’t even need to see the trailer for this one, plus the word ‘ecchi’ in the genre tag just confirms things for me. Next.
Chronolynx: Nothing in that summary inspires much confidence. Unlikely.
Mystlord: Sounds like they stole the plotline from Sekirei and mixed it up a little bit. Oh please. Another one?
Crusader: Just froze my ass off in the wastelands of Ohio…not sure if I am up for Freezing my ass off again…
ghostlightning: There’s a show every season that I keep saying I won’t watch, and I end up trying (and regretting). This might be it!
Impz: I also read the manga for Freezing. There is a lot of fanservice. Clothes always get ripped off by magic etc. The storyline is half decent and pretty serious for a fanservice type of manga, but the characters are very one-dimensional. I gave up on the manga, and I see no reason to follow through with this anime.

Gosick

Animation Studio: BONES (Star Driver, Full Metal Alchemist, Ouran High School Host Club.)
Website: http://www.gosick.tv/
Available TrailersTrailer 1
Source: Light novel adaptation.
Genre: Mystery, shounen.
Summary: The year is 1924, the place, Sauville, a small European country neatly tucked beside the Alps…
Kazuya Kujo has been studying abroad at the prestigious Saint Marguerite Academy, where urban legends and horror stories are all the rage. Most Kazuya ignores but the story of the Queen Berry, a mysterious ghost ship, really gets to him. Of course, his brainy friend Victorique is much more intrigued by true stories, and she uses her unrivaled logic to solve mysteries even the town’s famous detective can’t. Ironically, it is Victorique’s inquisitive nature that leads the duo to board a ship that matches the Queen Berry’s description to a tee, a ship that might just hold the key to solving a sinister mystery…

Writers’ Commentary
ExecutiveOtaku: Perhaps they meant to romanize it as “Gothic” but now made the mistake and can’t go back on it? Anyway, it could be an interesting series and I’ll be giving it the three episode test. Though it’s probably not the sort of show I’d want to blog even if I do end up liking it.
Hana: I eye-rolled at the gothloli detective holding a pipe, but it certainly looks gorgeous and I’m digging the mystery vibe, so I’ll give it the 3 epi test. (Might watch, won’t blog.)
Chronolynx: Bones. Yes. Full stop.
Mystlord: When I saw the preview image, I got a bit down. When I read the summary, I thought it was the stupidest thing ever. When I visited the site, I was even more disheartened. The fact that BONES is doing it means nothing to me because they threw the same director that did Heroman at this one. That can’t be good. I’ll try it out, but I get the feeling I won’t like it.
Crusader: Might get sick watching this….
ghostlightning: I’m having trouble with the character designs. Are they what, 8 YEAR-OLDS?
Impz: Definitely watching. Just to make me feel like goring my eyes out.

Haiyoru! Nyaruani: Remember My Love(craft-sensei)

Animation Studio: DLE
Website: http://ga.sbcr.jp/bunko_blog/nyaruani/
Available Trailers: None available.
Source: Light novel adaptation.
Genre: Comedy.
Summary: The story centers around Nyarlko, a formless Cthulhu deity who can take on the shape of anyone it wishes, but particularly the shape of a seemingly ordinary silver-haired girl. Mahiro Yasaka is a normal high school student who is chased by aliens one night, until “Nyarlko” saves him. (NOTE: only four minute episodes, already airing.)

Writers’ Commentary
ExecutiveOtaku: Wasn’t even sure if I should include this one since it’s not really a series with its four minute episodes. However I do have a soft spot for anything Lovecraft…even if it is moe Lovecraft. However the Lovecraft content in the first episode was minimal, confined pretty much to just the Lovecraft apron. Humor was ok, but I don’t think I’ll bother with the rest of it.
Hana: What’s all this Lovecraft stuff everyone’s talking about? Oh wait, I don’t care. Next.
Chronolynx: Absurd enough to maybe work. It also proves the Japanese will make anything cute (it’s not often you see Lovecraftian and moe in the same sentence).
Mystlord: I cheated a bit and watched the first episode. MY EARS. DAT ANIMATION BUDGET. I CAN TELL ALREADY THAT I’LL drop this immediately.
Crusader: YESSSS I look forward to GOING MAD! The Necronomicon never mentioned this.
ghostlightning: No.
Impz: MOE stuff. Will watch to escape from the monotony of work.

Genre: ?
Summary: Subaru and Gainax are cooperating to make…something…?

Writers’ Commentary
ExecutiveOtaku: There is basically no information to go off of. But it’s Subaru. And Gainax. Will watch for potential of GDB-tan. Please let this be moe-ified Subarus!
Hana: LOL at the genre and summary! Right let’s check the trailer… Oh, I see. Or rather, I don’t. Please give me the last 46 seconds of my life back.
Chronolynx: Ahahaha. Maybe, probably.
Mystlord: What? Eh, what do I have to lose…
Crusader: At least you will have the safety of all wheel drive…
ghostlightning: This could be really awful. I’ll be there to watch it.

Hourou Musuko

Animation Studio: AIC (Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai, Asobi ni Iku yo,
Website: http://www.houroumusuko.jp/
Available TrailersTrailer 1
Source: Manga adaptation.
Genre: Drama.
Summary: Shûichi Nitori is a 5th grade student who likes to bake and has always been something of a feminine boy. When he transfers to a new school, Shûichi is mistaken for his 6th grade sister on his first day. Then he ends up sitting next to Yoshino Takatsuki, a tall, boyish girl who everyone calls “Takatsuki-kun.” They both have secrets they can’t let anyone know… The series deals with issues such as transsexuality, gender identity, and the beginning of puberty.

Writers’ Commentary
ExecutiveOtaku: Looks to be an interesting drama even if I’m not so interested in the specific topics. And it is the other noitaminA show this season, so that gives it points. The animation style is definitely…different, though I can’t quite say yet whether I think that this is so in a good or a bad way. Will give it a try.
Hana: Looks and sounds sweet and interesting, respectively. I agree that it gets points for the issues it intends to tackle and for the noitaminA slot. Another one that get’s a ‘We’ll see’ from me. (Might watch, won’t blog.)
Chronolynx: While I doubt I’ll “blog” this per se, it seems specifically gauged to my interests. Expect to see a post or two about this one.
Mystlord: I can tell I’ll love this one already. The trailer captivated my attention, and the animation style is especially striking and unique. I think I’m interested in trying to blog this, though this might blow up in my face…
Crusader: Sounds like a serious trap show… mandatory three ep test is GO. IN THE NAME OF IMPZ.
ghostlightning: The selection of subjects it involves itself makes it interesting to me. I’ll probably try it.
Impz: Crusader, you will be surprised to know that this is a very very deep manga that addresses societal issues along with many things that we can relate to when we are children, when we are teenagers and when we are young adults. I am watching this.

Infinite Stratos

Animation Studio: 8-bit (Macross Frontier movies.)
Website: http://www.tbs.co.jp/anime/is/
Available TrailersTrailer 1
Source: Light novel adaptation.
Genre: Action, mecha, science fiction, shounen.
Summary: Japan engineered an armed powered exoskeleton “Infinite Stratos” (IS) and it became the mainstream of weapons. Since only women can operate IS, women dominate the society over men. Orimura Ichika is a 15 year old boy and accidentally touches an IS placed in the IS pilot training school. He is found to be the only man who can operate IS and forced to enter the training school. Ichika’s busy school life surrounded by girls has begun.

Writers’ Commentary
ExecutiveOtaku: I think my reaction can be summed up as thus. You know, if it weren’t for the “only women can operate IS” and “life surrounded by girls” parts I really could have gotten onboard with this one. As it stands it has pretty sweet mecha, and a nice departure from the traditional larger mecha where the pilot is fully enclosed in a cockpit. We’ll have to see how good the mecha and the battles are to determine whether they can overcome that stupid, stupid haremesque premise.
Hana: Mecha + harem = HANA SAYS NO.
Chronolynx: How much I’ll like this one depends on how good the action is, and how much they play up the “life surrounded by girls” aspect.
Mystlord: I feel like the setting is insulting to the intelligence of every human being. The trailer made me think kind of the same thing. The only thing redeeming about this? They somehow got Fumihiko Shimo of KyoAni fame as a script writer. Buuuut the bad outweighs the singular good, and yeah yeah…
Crusader: I like mecha action not liking only boy in all girl high school. Also if there is funnel spam…I’ll drop this faster than Zekes drop colonies…
ghostlightning: Mecha action? I’ll try it, even if for nothing else.
Impz: Remember how much I hate mecha? Now add harem with it? Oh my, I can’t wait to stab the voodoo doll.

Summary: Sequel to the first season.

Writers’ Commentary
ExecutiveOtaku: Definitely watching, will continue blogging along with comrade Crusader and anyone else interested.
Hana: Fina-freaking-lly.  Love of season one + love of the manga = HANA SAYS HELL YES. (Comrade Hana reporting for being-on-standby if you need me, gentlemen).
Chronolynx: PERHAPS WE WILL FINALLY SEE THEM HUG
Mystlord: Oh good. Maybe now I’ll take more than a passing interest in this show… Or maybe not.
Crusader: YES motherfucking finally in this Winter will not totally suck.
ghostlightning: I dropped the first season, and feel refreshed for doing so.
Impz: It’s shoujo. Is there any reason why I shouldn’t watch it?

Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?

Animation Studio: Studio DEEN (Simoun, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, Maria Sama ga Miteru.)
Website: http://newtype.kadocomic.jp/zombie/
Available TrailersTrailer 1
Source: Manga adaptation.
Genre: Action, horror, mahou shoujo.
Summary: Aikawa Ayumu is a normal high school boy. One day he is killed by a serial killer and revived as a zombie by a necromancer named Eucliwood Hellscythe. He starts to serve Eu as her guard but he happens to deprive the mahou shoujo Haruna of her magic power. Haruna orders Ayumu to fight against the anti-mahou shoujo system “Megalo” in her place.

Writers’ Commentary
ExecutiveOtaku: I still think the entire zombie genre is lame, whether it comes in High School of the Dead-style bullet-time boobs or moe mahou shoujo. Pass.
Hana: Doesn’t look like a bad show, but doesn’t look like my thing either. Enjoy it, Mysty!
Chronolynx: Nothing here for me. No thank you.
Mystlord: It’s sad that my comrades just don’t understand just how awesome pink chainsaws and zombies-that-aren’t-really-zombies are. Please guys. Get on board the awesome train. One of the script-writers did Amagami, some of Katanagatari, some of Kuragehime, some of Lucky Star, and ALL OF STITCH! What’s not to love???

Website: http://ani.tv/level-e/
Available TrailersTrailer 1
Source: Manga adaptation.
Genre: Comedy, science fiction, shounen.
Summary: Tsutsui Yukitaka was a freshman who had just entered a high school, and he was hoped to be a good baseball player. When he moved to a new apartment, there was a man in the room. He said he was an alien and lost his memory. Actually, he was the first prince of Planet Dogra, and he was the man who had the best brain and the worst nature.

Writers’ Commentary
ExecutiveOtaku: Another shounen-style comedy, a type that usually doesn’t work too well with me (with the exception of Gintama.) I might take a look at the first episode, but I’m not expecting anything noteworthy.
Hana: The title makes me think of ‘Vampire Knight’. Unfortunately, the rest sounds like anything but. Pass.
Chronolynx: Sure, why not. Looks like it could be interesting.
Mystlord: Ummm basically a bunch of no-names doing this one. My gut reaction just from the imagine is “what?” That usually translates to a try. I think.
Crusader: Okay…
ghostlightning: Not really interested, but who knows?

Genre: Mahou shoujo.
Summary: Madoka is an kind, friendly, but ordinary second-year middle school girl. She wonders aloud what she should do if she can grant whatever you may wish through magic.

Writers’ Commentary
ExecutiveOtaku: Any series with SHAFT doing the production automatically gets at least a three episode test from me. While I can’t say I’m a fan of the genre on its own, seeing SHAFT and Shinbou put their take on it should be interesting. Likely to keep watching.
Hana: The fact that it’s SHAFT made me watch the trailer. But that’s all I’m watching. Moé magical girl crap not-my-thing is still crap not-my-thing. Next.
Chronolynx: While Shaft have made a few shows I really liked, they do get a bit stale after a while. Maybe, but probably not.
Mystlord: KYAAAAAAA SHINBOU MAGICAL GIRL ANIME. I don’t care that it’s kind of like a learning opportunity for up and coming SHAFT director Yukihiro Miyamoto. Character designs by Ume Aoki (Hidamari Sketch writer) = win. Script by the guy who did Phantom? Oh God I’m so ready to get on the awesome train. Shinbou, TAKE ME AWAYYYYY~~~

Hana: What Chrono says.
Chronolynx: Didn’t watch season one.
Mystlord: Dropped this after 5 episodes after it started to get rather repetitive and stale. As if I’ll watch the sequel :P
Crusader: HARD TO PORT, HARD TO PORT.
ghostlightning: No chance.
Impz: YES YES YES YES YES. Watching this. It’s stupid, it’s dumb and it helps me relax. Well, I drop it after five or six episodes.

Genre: Comedy, ecchi, romance.
Summary: Junior High student Nao’s brother complex is so strong, it’s almost at the point of incest. She’s determined to make her brother, High School student Shuusuke, see her as a woman. So determined, that she goes as far as going into his room to throw away all his non-incest related porn. But as she’s looking for his porno stash, she finds a photo album… and she’s not in any of his childhood pictures. What is going on?

Writers’ Commentary
ExecutiveOtaku: Apparently it was somehow possible to have an even worse premise than OreImo. Though I suppose (*heavy sigh*) that I shouldn’t write it off right away…maybe. OreImo ended up being pretty good when Kirino isn’t involved and it’s become worth keeping up with for all the talk about it. However this just looks like an incest version of Chu-bra or MM, and that sort of ecchi humor I zenzen suki jya nai yo.
Hana: HELL NO.
Chronolynx: No.
Mystlord: LOL I’m pretty sure people are already claiming that this show is what OreImo SHOULD have been. Well OreImo was kind of okay, and this will undoubtedly turn out to be trash. On the down side, the staff is one of the weakest I’ve seen yet, and the director is rather known for being acquiescing. This earns a pa-. Well I guess it can’t hurt to try ONE episode… *wink wink*

Starry Sky

Animation Studio: Studio DEEN (Simoun, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, Maria Sama ga Miteru.)
Website: http://sta-ska.com/
Available TrailersNone
Source: Mnaga adaptation.
Genre: Shoujo, harem.
Summary: The heroine, Tsukiko, enrolled to a school that was recently changed from all-boys school to co-ed. Since the area where the school is conveniently rural and the rather exclusive curriculums the school has, up until now the heroine is the only one female who enrolled to the school. In Starry Sky, the 12 constellations of the Zodiac are personified into handsome young men. The anime will be directed by Kiyomo Sayaka who worked with Vampire Knight. Similar to Hetalia – Axis Powers, Starry Sky’s anime will be distributed through the Animate.tv website and other means.

Writers’ Commentary
ExecutiveOtaku: Could be funny like Hetalia, or lame like Miracle Train. Guessing the latter especially since I don’t know much about what zodiac signs are supposed to have what personalities. Bunch of silly superstitious nonsense that probably won’t make for much comedy.
Hana: I’m thinking ‘Fruits Basket’ meets ‘Miracle Train’… Well, okay, more the latter than the first. BUT, we all need our guilty pleasures now and again. So, I’ll defo check it out for the eye- and ear-candy at least. (Will probably watch, but won’t blog. Unless it’s to take the piss. Wait.)
Chronolynx: Probably will watch. Probably won’t have anything to say about it.
Mystlord: Hmph it got pushed back from the Fall season. I’m not sure what that means. But a reverse harem is something that I’ve never watched before, so I’ll try it at least for that.
Crusader: IF only it were Sentinels of the Starry Skies…

Hana: What Mysty says.
Chronolynx: Not familiar with the older series, so no.

Writers’ Commentary
ExecutiveOtaku: As I learned when I dropped Iron Man, I’m just not a fan of comic book stuff. Wolverine was always a punk anyway. Won’t be watching.
Hana: Looks bloody awful. Plus, I was also burned by ‘Iron Man’. Next.
Chronolynx: Wolverine. Eww, no.
Mystlord: I felt nothing but disgust after watching Iron Man. I’m sorry Madhouse, but that failure was just too great to give you a second chance on this.

Genre: Action, supernatural.
Summary: Huju-wara-kun is your ordinary adolescent boy , but 10 years ago he noticed he had a power to see multicolored auras surrounding the persons body which he looks upon through his fingers. Every so often Huju-wara has dreams about a war with cats , but one day a girl fell on top of him …. what will happen now with his incoming feline enemies?

Writers’ Commentary
ExecutiveOtaku: I understand that they might not want to give away some of the mystery, but there was very little to go on in the preview and description. Though the war with cats sounds interesting in an odd, comedic sort of way. Will give the first ep or two a shot to see what it’s about.
Hana: LOLLLLL at the summary. In short: no. (*still laughing*)
Chronolynx: Looks like it could be interesting. And I’d never object to a war with cats. (Is that a Ghastly in the background?)
Mystlord: That trailer. Oh God that trailer actually convinced me to watch this. I’m going against my better judgment after reading that summary and being disappointed at J.C. Staff these past few seasons. LET’S DO IT!
Crusader: Not much of a cat person… BUT NICE SHIRT YO.

Goddamn I sound like a hater who hates everything. I’m actually interested in watching Beelzebub, somehow I don’t have an entry for it… not that I have much to say.

    What a hater.

Hate on, comrade! Though I’m actually a bit more optimistic this time. Three shows looks solid to me, and there’s a fair bit of ‘possibles.’ But only time will tell.

I enjoy the manga if that means anything.

More like I find so little to say based on trailers and the short descriptions. I really don’t know anything until I watch it… and even for shows that I eventually blog (that isn’t Gundam Unicorn) I end up making my post after the second ep.

Hopefully Mazinkaiser SKV comes out soon and maybe Crusader will gattai with me for the first gattai-version in the Mazinger franchise.

There’s extra information material outside of the anime descriptions itself ghost. Going back to Gosick as an example, the light novels its story is based off of have won several awards, being rightly praised for the balance it brings to the occult, science, and detective mystery. Add to that the lighter touches of a child-prodigy and academic backdrop and you have a series with surprising potential in my opinion. Balance is probably the quintessential word for me when I watch a series, and I praise anything that makes surprising combinations that enhance the overall appeal off all the genres it incorporates.

          • Posted December 30, 2010 at 9:09 pm | Permalink

That isn’t to say that the adaptation will not butcher it. No matter how amazing the source material, trailers, or summaries may be, it all means naught. It ultimately is up to whomever is doing the adaptation, be it to manga, novel or anime.

That being said, I too have high hopes for this coming season.

I’ve actually developed a fondness for Gosick after reading a few chapters of the manga myself, I think you should give it a shot before writing it off ghost, but I understand if its not your cup of tea. I generally appreciate the fact that it manages to turn the shoujo concept on its head a bit, with actual thinking and intelligence no less! That I like a few mystery series doesn’t hurt either, but as I was saying, don’t be so quick to overlook Gosick, getting you to underestimate it based on the adolescent concept only gives it the advantage of surprising you.

  2. Posted December 22, 2010 at 5:52 pm | Permalink

The one I’m seriously looking forward to this season is Gosick, for the mystery. And I’m going to watch Merry, because “war with cats”. I have to at least give the first few episodes a shot just based on that.

Got the picture wrong for Suite Precure (The picture on it is actually the current season of Precure, Heartcatch.) I’ll try to fix it ASAP.

And if you’re wondering why my comments for the upcoming season is not up there, I’m not planning to write anything in the upcoming season (got lots of schoolwork to be done) and I would like to complete my reviews for Shiki before school starts.

I still can’t understand the appeal of incest relationships.

I still can’t understand the appeal of incest relationships.

I have the theory that it is a way to boost the declining birthrate, by getting the borderline hikki, whom could never go on a date, to feel at ease about the idea of an incestual relationship. He doesn’t have to worry about getting to know many new women that will turn him down, but will turn to someone with whom he has already forged a strong bond.

What better person would there be, other than his dear sister? Lest she is like Kirino, it could be a viable option for him. Not that I condone such things, ’tis but a small thought.

Ugh, besides Kimi ni Todoke, I don’t see any redeeming shows this seasons.

I might watch an episode of that Madoka Magic only cause for some reason commercials for that damn anime seem to be in 50% of my damn subbed anime episodes or something.

I’m so glad there are great animes still continuing on from last season, but I can tell I’m gonna be hella bored this season with the new ones.

I’m surprised you guys are rather open to the idea of watching Starry Sky when you’re so dismissive of the likes of Rio or Infinite Stratos. Starry Sky will be worse. Far far far worse, the only show that can legitmately challenge the incest show for biggest pile of crap for the season. Just because it’s bishies instead of boobs doesn’t mean you should treat it with any more respect

      Well, I guess that worked.

Re Starry Sky: I wouldn’t be too surprised in three of our cases; and most of us have clearly shot it down for the same reasons as you imply, or are simply curious. Quite frankly, barring only a couple of them, I think they all have a fair crack at being called ‘the biggest pile of crap’, from any season (*sigh*). On the bright side though, more time to catch up with the better completed shows and classics!

    Okay… not so much.

Will watch (or try at least):

Beelzebub: manga/anime HARDLY makes me laugh; Beelzebub did it. I owe it one.
Freezing: Nothing new; no memorable characters (I just remember Bridget and Elizabeth). Still, I owe the manga one, so I will try.

    On hold:

Dragon Crisis: Maybe someone at Randomc will take it and help me with a sneak preview.
Kore Wa Zombie Desu Ka?: Same as Dragon Crisis
Kimi no Todoke: I saw some pictures of 1st Season. First I will watch the First (duh!) season and then I will catch up (will take some… months).

Nothing really amazing this time… phew.

    Thanks for the info.

I’m definitely watching Hourou Musuko. I started reading the manga after I began watching Aoi Hana the season it came out. I’m a fan. The manga has been stale for me lately, so I’m all in to see the first bit animated. The material is fantastic.

Definitely watching KnT. No question there.

Giving Beezlebub and Fractale a try.

  18. Posted December 23, 2010 at 5:21 am | Permalink

Just thought I should point out, there’s a tiny error in “onii-chan nanka…”

Studio Zexcs did not produce Eureka seven, unless there is another Eureka seven that I’m not aware of o.O;; I’m pretty sure it’s Bones that made Eureka, so I guess it’s jut a little error there.

As for stuff, I’ll be looking out for, I think I’ll probably end up following:
    Fractale
    Gosick
    Hourou Musuko
    Mahou Shoujo Madoka
    Houkago no Pleaides

There are a few others that might turn out interesting (based on their trailers, at least), but trailers can be highly deceiving, so I’ll reserve my judgement for those until the actual first episodes are released. Happy holidays to ya all :D

*sigh* Short of season 2 of Kimi ni Todoke and 1 or 2 other series I’m going to be catching up with a lot of older anime. This is good because it’s been a miracle that I’ve been able to keep up with as much of the Fall season as I have.

I haven’t been commenting on this blog much since I didn’t watch the shows you covered last season, but here’s how I see the show in the lineup…

Beezlebub: Elephant jokes aside, expect it to be poor man’s Bleach or DBZ

Dragon Crisis: Magical girlfriend wish fulfilment, meh… And yes Dragon Age is more fun

Fractale: Seeing how A-1 can turn boring premises into awesome, will watch the first 3 episodes

Freezing: Another panty fighter animu? NEXT…

Gosick: Too loli for me, even if the premise seems intriguing

Haiyoru! Nyaruani: Remember My Love(craft-sensei): Lost 9999 SAN just from the premise alone, and I thought Nitro-plus butchered the Mythos…

Houkago no Pleiades: Hopefully it’s something as awesome as PnSwG, and these girls transform into WRC-spec Imprezas for insane Ken Block-ish Gymkhana action…

Hourou Musuko: Sounds deep, may give it a try…

Infinite Stratos: The premise and trailer seems cliched, yeah Crusader, typical story of the only mighty man in the world of women and pledges to protect them (thus bringing out their dere dere side every episode and adding one haremette at a time) when they can easily kick his ass… the suits remind me of Busou Shinki (another work by the Strike Witches designer)… Will give it the 3 episode test.

Kimi ni Todoke season 2: Liked the teen drama of the first one, but not expecting any particular progress in Sawako and Kazehaya’s relationship past the “friends” stage. Will watch for the beta couple of ramen loving girl and stoic baseball dude…

Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?: My necromancers from my 1E AD&D campaign can’t possibly be this moe!!!

Level E: Why do I get a David Bowie as “The Man who Fell to Earth” vibe here?

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica: DARK HAIRED MUSKETEER MAHOU SHOUJO GET!!!

Mitsudomoe Zouryouchuu: Didn’t watch the first season, won’t watch this one…

Onii-chan no Koto Nanka Zenzen Suki Jya Nai Dakara Ne~!!: This looks like something only the Striped One or the Oz deportee Meido Eyebleach Horror would be into…

    Rio -Rainbow Gate-: NEXT!!!

    Starry Sky: NEXT ONE PLEASE!!!

Suite Precure: NOW WE’RE TALKING!!! Nah, just kidding…

Wolverine: Just like the previous Iron Man anime, I expect an idiot plot, stilted voice acting and horrible waste of potentially good characters. Probably even worse than live action Wolverine:Origins. And @EO, Wolverine needs an opponent which he can’t beat, someone preferably big, green and irradiated…

Yumekui Merry: Looks like something from the Index team, will give it the 3 episode test nya… Also how many episodes before A CAT IS FINE TOO???

  26. Posted December 24, 2010 at 3:42 am | Permalink

Mecha + harem = Nazarielle is definitely gonna check it out :D I’m such a loser D: Oh harem nonsense, why can’t I quit you?

Putting an APB out on a certain tanuki dwelling in Singapore…

I think he’s already been caught, did you see how suddenly he stopped posting when Yosuga no Sora got around to Sora’s arc? Yeah…

I have no idea what Madoka Magica is gonna be about, but I’m hoping it brings some light humor and HidaSketch-esque vibes. If it can do that, I’ll watch it.

Yumekui Merry looks really… odd, but I’d bet on it being a sleeper. I just want to check it out because there’s hardly anything out there about it, and the trailer sure doesn’t help much.

    ……Moe Season….

    Winter Sucks .__.

  28. Posted December 24, 2010 at 6:09 am | Permalink

It’s kind of sad that the most anticipated show is a sequel. I wish there were more darker themed mecha/sci-fi but I suppose Fractale will hopefully be enough for this season. Hourou Musuko sounds moderately interesting as well :)

  29. Posted December 24, 2010 at 10:12 am | Permalink

Sigh, I really should comment earlier, so that I can force my opinion upon the innocent masses.
Anyways, this season seems a bit sub par but hopefully not too sub par.

Even though I haven’t read all of it, I agree with Impz assessment of Hourou Musuko. The manga is very deep, complex and full of poignant themes/symbols and that other stuff that English teachers always love talking about.

Aww, no love for Beelzebub. :( Well, I guess it really isn’t much of a blogging show, but if you are ever in the mood for some laughs, some cute scenes (it is a baby and a delinquent, how much cuter can you get?), and some exceptionally bad ass scenes, then give Beelzebub a watch now and then.

Fractale seems promising, hopefully it will be awesome. I didn’t mind the premise for Rio that much, but then I saw the trailer….I don’t mind fan-service, but that is just eughhh….

Lastly, a note about Onii-chan no Koto Nanka Zenzen Suki Jya Nai Dakara Ne~!!
I know I will probably sound like a madman/pervert for saying this, but if you are willing to sacrifice a small part of vision, and a bit of your sanity, I would suggest that you watch this show, if only for the lols.
If OreIme had a strong male lead, and a weak female lead, then this show is the opposite, but only this time, the female is not only strong, but incredibly crazy.
The girls in this manga are so evil and convoluted, that you can’t help but laugh at their evil schemes designed to garner the attention of an incredibly perverted guy.

  32. KrimzonStriker
    Posted December 24, 2010 at 8:05 pm | Permalink

Lets see, my picks for the season will probably be

    Fractale (Interesting concept)
Freezing (got to fill my action quota, and having read the manga I actually enjoy the character dynamic between the main hero and heroine personally)
Infinite Stratos (What can I say, I like cultural underdog stories, and mecha’s always plus)
Gosick (A pleasent surprise when I first read the manga, I always appreciate it when a story twists the general perception of its genre around, with what looks to be both a nice balance between light and dark concepts.)
And Kimi ni Todoke Season 2 (Got to fill my daawwww quota, and KnT always seems to manage to do so)

Honestly, everyones way too pessimistic around here in my opinion, you can always find a few jewels if you’re willing to be open minded and willing to look for it. I for one was disappointed with many of the main blogging sites (this one included) for passing up some interesting opportunities last season as well.

Fractale, like every other noitaminA show, has grabbed my full attention. it’s an interesting concept, and the artwork is a bit different from the previous shows: it’s ambient, light, and almost like someone drew it with water colors. That makes me believe it’ll be a lot slower and a bit lighter (without sacrificing the pensive parts of the show), which is something I try to look for in anime. (Almost like a mix of Haibane Renmei and ARIA, if you will.)

The only other ones that interest me are Hourou Musuko and Gosick–but realistically, I’ll just stick to Fractale. XD

wow, this is a terrible season.

wolverine looks absolutely terrible. madhouse’s standards have been regressing for a while now, with inconsistent designs in HotD (derived from screenshots. did you really think i watched it?) to just plain nauseating art in iron man.

and, to tell the truth, i stopped watching kimi no todoke halfway through. i don’t know now anyone can really stand the detailed narration of the main character what’s-her-name’s whining and indecisiveness and awkwardness and straight out annoyingness for half the episode.

fractale sounds interesting due to the sci-fi premise. no doubt even with the girl/boy thing there is some kind of huge theme to be dealt with regarding the whole control thing and the fact that his parents aren’t real. or something. not to mention i am a sucker for both sci-fi and fractals (not related but i don’t care)

hourou musuko is really the most interesting of the bunch. the themes it is dealing with are what sold me. i myself am interested in psychology involving gender identity and its effects, so at the very least it’s going to be an interesting watch. not to mention the art looks absolutely beautiful.

Hourou Musouko: The manga is awesome, so I’ll watch it. If the adaption is as good as/better than Aoi Hana’s one, I’ll be happy.

Gosick: I like the novels a lot (bought two so far), so I won’t be watching the anime, because I’m afraid of adaption decay.

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica: Definite watch because Kajiura Yuki is making music. Also for SHAFT being SHAFT.

Fractale: sounds interesting, nice art, will watch.

Level E: the manga was burst out loud laughing funny in some parts (and sometimes thought provoking in others), but I’ll probably not watch the anime.

Mitsudomoe: Will watch because the first season’s episodes made me laugh or smile.

Kimi no todoke: I love the manga, but find it very difficult to watch shoujo anime(couldn’t even finish the first season), so no go.

Everything else: Not going to watch unless I hear something interesting about them after the season start. You never know, pink chainsaws or cat wars might be sleeper hits.

Is it me or have peoples standards gotten higher?
Remember when all you got was designs like Sailor Moon?

I don’t care about what most of the miniscule reviews made in each anime preview.
I know, in MY opinion, and that’s it, it’s MY opinion. Same goes for everyone elses opinion.

Gosick (Doesn’t have much of an obvious plot, but character designs are beautiful and it’s theme itself is something different)
Kore wa Zombie desu ka? (Dude. I don’t need to explain. Go read the reviews here.) Idiot if dismissing this.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica (QFT ^) You diss this series, and you’re a fucking idiot. Anyway.

Fractale (This is actually good – I was going to dismiss it because of its character designs and backrounds, similar to that of an anime movie, but the story and concept completely outweighs that. Plus, the character designs grow on you and Nessa is SOFUCKINGADORABLE)

Oniichan no koto whatever (I do NOT expect this to be good. I expect it to be FUNNY. And that’s what I got, so – watching.)
Infinite Stratos (I don’t expect it to be too out of the ordinary, but 4 episodes in and it’s alright)
Yumekui Merry (It’s amazing. Especially the voice actor for Merry, amazing job as a first role, the whole Dream overlapping Reality concept is a breath of fresh air, and not to mention it doesn’t rely on mild fanservice. The story itself is superior.)
Rio: Rainbow Gate! (Once again – It’s obvious not to expect much. Fanservice, general lolz and slight comedy. Character designs and backrounds are amazing. (No, not their busty bodies, just the way the colours and such are done)
Dragon Crisis! (Pretty good. I can see numerous cycles it could repeat itself, but it hasn’t had any trouble yet, I actually want protag to get with random shy girl in class because she is a lot more cuter than Rose. Not to mention hotter, but then again, you piss Rose off and you probs die.)
Horou Musokusokfdisfso (Genderbender anime? No thanks. – See. Opinion, I see a lot of people are interested in this, but I am not.)
That weird 4 episode moe moe look at me thing. (I’m watching it)

I’m really liking Gosick at the moment. There was a bit of an empty space left after Shiki ended.

I just finished watching episode six, the logic Victorique uses it’s often either random or was painfully obvious to begin with. However the characters are quite charming and the setting is gorgeous. Most of the time I’m more surprised by the characters reactions (especially Victorique) than the plot itself. (That’s not to say there wasn’t a few twists I didn’t see coming)

Overall so far I’d give the series a 7.5/10. It hasn’t quite had a truly magical moment yet but it’s definitely been interesting and I do think it has a lot of potential.

Also I might give that anime about the feminine boy and masculine girl, it sounds very interesting.

As for some of the others….

Fractale: I watched an episode of this but it seemed to go absolutely nowhere. I probably should watch at least another episode of it….but I doesn’t seem to have a strong direction. (I guess I’m being harsh though…)

Freezing: No thank you, I’ve had my fill of bouncing boobs when I watched Highschool of the Dead (I actually did like the series although the apartment sexy episode was painful to watch.) True overkill.

None of the others seem that interesting or noteworthy.

  • [...] Back when it first aired, no one expected it to be so magnificent. Everyone was just expecting another Magical Girl anime, and without it being based on a game, novel, or manga, who was to tell them otherwise. My feeling is Shinbo is aiming for a true Magical Girl series, based on wha the promos have shown. Absolute purity and goodness in an unabashed, totally serious way that leaves the old school magical girl fans declaring the glory days have come back. Sorta like Gurren Lagann for the Magical Girl genre. Which I’m afraid I just can’t get excited for. Magical Girl anime just don’t do it for me (he says, basing this prejudice solely off Princess Tutu and the fact they have stupid names like Magical Musical ~Chu~ ~Chu~ Lyrical Heart and Soul Puni Puni Girl SOS). –Scamp-Source Writers’ Commentary ExecutiveOtaku: Any series with SHAFT doing the production automatically gets at least a three episode test from me. Shinbou, TAKE ME AWAYYYYY~~~ Crusader: SHINBOU MAGICAL GIRL ANIME GET. ghostlightning: No chance. Impz: Again? –source [...]
