Shiki Episode 22 (END): They lived.

This will not end well.

It’s Christmas last week, so now we have the New Year this week.

And thanks to fellow commenter dude, Shiki is supposed to have another 2 episodes that is coming with the DVD set in May 2011 (Indicated as episodes 20.5 and 21.5. Probably will shed some light on what happened on the Shiki side that didn’t appear much on episodes 20 and 21.) Oh please forgive a tortured soul who has been on a diet for almost a month, watching too many (available) episode of Daria on Youtube, having to face a freezing but never-raining weather (why won’t it RAIN???) all the way and having to deal with boredom every single day.

Now, let’s say goodbye to everyone in the final (or not) episode of Shiki. Enjoy your last day of 2010.

Warning: Viewer Discreation is adviced. Include a really gruesome and bloody death on one of the characters in this series.

Where’s my Prince in Shining Armor?

As nightfall comes, Sunako found herself inside the briefcase Tatsumi put her in on last week’s episode, finding herself all alone in the woods. Hearing the anti-Shiki exterminators finding the remaining Shiki that are still alive and somewhere, Sunako tries making her escape, hoping that they will not find her as she cries out to Seishin.

Acting as decoy, Tatsumi finds himself in a dead end as the car he’s driving is destroyed by the exterminators. Shot and then rammed into another car as he tries escaping on foot, that doesn’t lose Tatsumi’s fighting spirit when he drives the car he got hit and escaped from those killing machines. Sunako and his attempts are futile, seeing them being outnumbered and finding no way to escape from the clutches of a group of man/Shiki-slaughters. Dying a gruesome and fast death by the hands of the villagers, Tatsumi has no way to run and recover from his wounds.

Oh. If you’re wondering where Kaori went after she met her undead father, there she is.

Still alive. And hooray for Akira being alive from this madness.

Acting all by herself, Megumi hides from the villagers and plans to have a glamorous life in the big city. With Seishin found and pleaded for him to response, Sunako was spotted soon after by Ookawa’s team. While they search for the traitors and the Shiki, Toshio’s team meanwhile find themselves in another dead end after discovering that Sotoba’s water supplies are gone (as the area of Yamairi holds all the water supplies of the entire village was burn to the ground, most likely done by the Shiki).

Waiting for a good time to make her escape out of Sotoba, Megumi finds herself in a good timing as the exterminators looked at Yamairi burnt into crisps. As she escapes, seeing the bus stop sign reminds her of her meeting with Natsuno back to the very first episode before any of this craziness happened. Unfortunately her escape plans didn’t work out effectively after she was spotted by the humans and true enough, her predictions that the humans are stupid are all wrong.

Villagers: We hope that you will die in the most brutal way possible.

While handling the situation at Yamairi, Toshio found Natsuno, who wasn’t looking too happy with Tooru’s and Ritsuko’s death. As Megumi manipulates the villagers’ sympathy by telling them that she’s the daughter of Shimizu and looking very pitiful (It won’t work this time, you fat cow.), this time they won’t fall into her tricks as Megumi is being squashed by the hands of their vehicles as she whines about them being villagers and all, but she gets too much when she screams ‘Why am I born in this village in the first place’ and ‘I wish this village never even exist and all of you die badly!’ Take that, you bitch!

I guess you’re going to kill me now, Mr. Ozaki. But not to worry, I managed to save Kaori and Akira.

Yes, the villagers killed you this time! You will never rise of your shame and humiliation!!!! MuahahaHAHAHA!!!! *Well, I have a great time being hammy and laugh at Megumi’s death. Seriously, leopard prins (not a spelling error) looks ugly on you.*

Unsurprisingly, Tatsumi’s still alive, talking to Natsuno about the things he has to do before dying without regrets. Sunako was spotted by Ookawa’s team after seeing Yamairi burnt and attempted making an escape. Dealing with the chaos in Yamairi, Toshio orders everyone to hold themselves together as the villagers living in Yamairi move somewhere safe and dispose the bodies before they found out the awful truth about the Shiki.

While Tatsumi settle things with Natsuno, he knew that he was the one who took Toshio’s blood before Chizuru ever did and ranting about the reasons why Natsuno is not so different from him other than the fact that they are werewolves. So they start their cat/wolf/dog fight again which at the same time, Sunako escaping the clutches of the ‘evil’ Ookawa (in her perspective, that is.) Bruised and injured, Sunako found herself in the church where she first met Seishin and then starts pouring out her feelings why that man (her father’s so-called friend) who visited her house turned her into a Shiki in the first place and she didn’t ask any of it. Too bad she was spotted by Ookawa and Sunako has no choice but to fight for her very survival.

Stay away. I have unfinished business with this kid. *starts picking a cat/dog/wolf fight at Natsuno*

Alone with the psycho. Interesting. Will Sunako die? Will a miracle save her from her cruel fate?

As Tatsumi and Natsuno still have their personal fight on and Sunako going to die in the hands of Ookawa, Sotoba is unlikely to be saved as the forest fire spreads too quickly into the main village. Giving her a stern lecture about the basics of living in a new place, it seems that Ookawa’s definitely going to kill Sunako, the perpetrator of all the disasters happened in Sotoba for the entire summer. Just as the inevitable is going to happen, Ookawa was slashed and beaten by an unknown person, who revealed to be…

Seishin Muroi to the rescue!!!

Stuck in a deep hole full of dead Shiki bodies, Natsuno lights up a dynamite as Tatsumi talks about how this will not work for them, but Natsuno just did it anyways. And DUN DUN DUN, Seishin himself has turned into the same creature Sunako is as Sunako feels like giving up and it isn’t clear if they are still alive or not.

Fleeing the village, Toshio and his group could witness the fire from afar as he ponders if they were actually fighting a losing battle set from the beginning in the first place. We see Senshirou, who’s a Shiki now (Or is it?) walking towards the burning mansion. Seeing lots of firetrucks racing against time to stop the fire, Akira tells Kaori about the fire that can be seen from afar. As the firetrucks made their way to Sotoba, we see Seishin, with Sunako in a new briefcase, driving the direction out of town…

The End.

We will stay together forever and ever and ever. At least we still have each other.

God please help me! That old man has gone crazy!!!

Give me some time to register everything into my head.

I assume that the ones still alive are Toshio and some of his crew, the Tanaka siblings, Seishin (and probably Sunako too), not really sure this time, Natsuno and Tatsumi should still be alive if the dynamite and the fire didn’t blow them into bits and probably some other villagers too. With everyone else dead and burnt in the fire, the victory of the villagers (as well as the stupidity of the villagers before finding out that the Shiki are behind of 99% of the deaths) comes at a huge price. (I do understand why the part where Kaori kills her father is not shown. They don’t want the episode to be broadcasted since there’s one such case where a daughter kills her father, which Higurashi and the last episode of School Days were broadcasted on a later date. Maybe they are saving it for either episode 20.5 or 21.5 where viewers would only see it by themselves when the DVD is released.)

I feel that something’s missing from the ending. It just…didn’t satisfy what things have turned out. (But I’m glad Megumi gets what she deserves all this time.) So now what will the remaining living villagers do seeing their home burnt down all in one night? Live in the city? Live in another place far away from Sotoba? After all, it’s best for the participants of the anti-Shiki extermination to stay very far away from Sotoba, brings back lots of bad memories for the weak-willed ones, never to be told to the rest of the world. But at least the ending is a lot better than most endings which failed to live up to most people’s expectations, with a great build up but it doesn’t execute well enough to make sense by the time the grand ending arrives. So, what do you think of the ending, are you satisfied with it and what do you think will happen to the remaining villagers from this point onwards?

City life: Here I come!!! Or not.

I have plans to write an AU-Shiki fanfic about how life really do suck in Sotoba and Natsuno has to deal with his family’s and the villagers’ stupidity after watching several incomplete episodes of Daria on Youtube but I can’t promise that I will update regularly. (Of course, since it’s AU there are no Shiki involved but Sunako and Co. will still be living in Sotoba, except that they’re not Shiki anymore) I’m terrible at being regular when it comes to fanfictions since I kept falling myself into a writers’ block and I have other RL situations to attend to.

For now, let us celebrate the new year as we wait for episodes 20.5 and 21.5 to come. That will shed some light on the happenings that we didn’t get to see before things get out of hand as it burns rapidly. Let me just write one last review of the series as a whole…

Didn’t think we died, right?

There’s a preview for the next episode in the credits, so I guess we still get one more.

    • Posted December 31, 2010 at 8:00 am | Permalink

Heard from psgels from Star Crossed Blog about the preview. Most likely a preview of the DVD episodes that comes with the DVD volume coming in May 2011.

That’s not a preview for an Epilogue. Some sites report an “episode 23″, but it hasn’t been officially announced, and there’s no timeslot set aside for it next week.

As for the DVD episodes, they’re entitled 20.5 and 21.5, so I highly doubt they’re endings. I think that was just a little small epilogue or something.

I am pretty certain that Natsuno and Tatsumi died in the explosion. After all a bullet to the head was enough to kill Yoshie. Tatsumi said the line “this is not enough to kill a werewolf” _before_ Natsuno pulled out the dynamite.
As for Gackt, what makes you think that he became a shiki? He just went back to his mansion to die.

I am 90% satisfied by this ending. I would have liked a bit more closure, something like Toshio describing the villagers’ life some months after the incident. Still a much better concousion than many other series.

If you read in manga, after yoshie got shot, she’s still not dead. (episode35)
The story has many plot holes but I am still satisfy of ending.

      Seishirou becomes jinrou/warewolf, doesn’t he??

wishing for an(other unlikely) second season. Oh well.
how many people would be admitted into insane asylums by the time everyone reaches the city? *snigger*

Unfortunately the final episode was a little bit of a mess, but it was still satisfying to a point. I don’t take issue that the lives of everyone in Shiki is left unresolved, because it really doesn’t matter. I’m still a little miffed at how useless Natsuno ended up being, and how Kaori and Akira were just woosh saved, but with apparently little consequences. Sigh oh well. I await your full review~

I thought the ending was apt except the part where Seishin and Sunako was saved and drove away. How the heck do you get out of a inferno, shiki may be able to heal quickly, but that doesn’t mean they are fire-proof! Also, a question that was never answered for me was why did Senshiro turn his allegiance?

Seishin is a jinrou, and thankfully he and Sunako live; they are beautiful.

The villagers popping a tractor wheelie on Megumi while wearing their bumpkin-wear as the castle burned in the background was pure poetry.

  8. Posted January 1, 2011 at 1:22 am | Permalink

I kinda liked Megumi in the middle of the series, but I hated her at the beginning and final episode. She really was pathetic when she died.

Overall, I think it had a decent ending, but I was expecting something epic and mind blowing. It’s not a bad ending, just didn’t live up to the hype I built up.

I really hate the part with Seishin and Sunako though. The probability of becoming a jinrou is very low, yet Seishin just happens to turn into one and happens to go save her in time (damn you beardie for giving that speech before trying to kill her – didn’t you learn for movies that it gives ample time for your enemies?).

I wanted more about what happens to the villagers next, and about the Tanaka siblings.

I totally understand writer’s block – it’s hard for me to write too (not fanfiction, just something I came up with).

*sigh* the end of one of my favorite anime of all time.

About Ookawa: Genre Blindness. That is all.

I agree with the part where you thought about the road ahead for the remaining villagers and the Tanaka siblings. But there’s one thing they desperately, really, really need to do: seek a therapist.

If you look at the situation in a different angle, this could be a downer ending. The exterminators’ sanity are gone, their village is burnt down at the cost of killing every single Shiki ever existed (save Sunako and Seishin) and they have nowhere else to go to. With the level of sanity Toshio and his crew current possesses, I doubt to call this a great victory.

of killing every single Shiki ever existed (save Sunako and Seishin)

Wrong. It was stated that there are Shikis in a nearby city…that’s where they took some people/dinner from :P

Needs more Natsuno, preferably wearing those baggy trousers and waistcoat combo. Ahem. Seriously, though, his unique standpoint as the only rebel vamp/jinrou who wasn’t on the side of the humans either could have been explored a LOT more. But a creeptastically enjoyable series overall, and I also look forward to your full review.

  10. Posted January 1, 2011 at 11:00 am | Permalink

I was pretty satisfied by the ending, actually. I liked the way things turned out with Seishin and his loli surviving, but could have used a less severe jump from “OMG EVERYTHING IS BURNING KILL EVERYTHING” into “hey, we’re safe. let’s chill in this car.”. The jump from the climax to the resolution was much too steep. Just stick in 5 minutes more of showing where the villagers were going, perhaps, and I’d be utterly complete.

…Considering everyone is covered in bloodstains and don’t have a spare change of clothes…who the hell is going to let them anywhere near their village? XD

Anyways, Shiki was one of the favourites of the year, if not my ultimate favourite <3

Well. This turned out to be easily on of the best animes of 2010.
    Perhaps even THE best.
Been long since I’ve seen something intelligent and thought-provoking.

As far as the ending goes – it fit the show perfectly.
A twisted village purged by fire.
Personally, I was saddened by Megumis death tho – she became my absolute favourite by the end.
Still, it was a memorable death for a memorable character.

they way they left it makes me feel there could be another season even after i read the manga. There are some plot that could be explored. I really can see natsuno coming back. I wouldn’t even mind if he came back years later in the same town to only discover that there are other supernatural that out to do no good or want natsuno. something like that. I really believe I going to write some also fanfiction on this. I try my best to be true to characters too.

counter: Natsuno being a werewolf according to the book has a pulse and heartbeat. Now any normal person would think human. I don’t believe the villages knows about the werewolf. Ah sure dynamite would make anyone scared but I don’t believe it over for the tragic hero or the doctor.

    Another season please!

Another note that like to bring up is some of the vampire were on big city country…
natsuno hasn’t got all of his revenge. I like to see interact with others werewolfs that are kinder, visit those two kids, visit the doctor(join as hunting parnters?), history of werewolf (in this story), how strong is he with full blood stomach( maybe you know little accident or need occured)
I want to write fanfiction also!
This story this has my heart pumping even after it thought to be over. Another season is possible with some any unanswered questions. This is without doubt one of the best anime I ever seen and I watch thousands of episodes of various shows.

  17. Posted April 22, 2011 at 1:39 pm | Permalink

What brought me here was also wondering “is this the end”?
But don’t many animes do that to us… leave us wanting more and more?
Maybe a less subtle epilogue would’ve been nice.
But I think the end fitted the series.
My general idea is: with Muroi, Sunako will find out other ways of living without having to make such ways.
Creating the perfect village for shiki to live in was after all partially due to the connection she had with Tatsumi, Shoujirou and others.
I think most of the characters had a fitting end… the only thing I did want to see through was Masao’s death. Most irritating character ever! xD
A second season would be nice, but it’d be a completely different story.

I for one kind of sympathized with Megumi. All she wanted was to be different and leave her nest and spread her wings(I myself moved away from home for college myself because I wanted to be someplace different). But she could not due to the village and lolconservatives, and her loving Natsuno made her flawed, and is what got her killed in the end.

A lot of people give her heat for turning Kaori’s dad and stalking Natsuno. The former she could have been ordered too by Tatsumi and co(that’s how they get their bite victims, ala orders). And the latter because he was the only one in Sotoba who came from the city and she sought to understand him, but seeing gay Natsuno is, didn’t have a chance, and she fell into a downward spiral and became malicious(although cute), similar to a Shakespearean character.

I guess both are good because they have almost the same body count…

Actually,at the end when all those firetrucks drive by,you know that one light blue ish car that drives in the opposite. If you spam the play/pause button, when it flashes, you can see it.But faintly. You see a guy with glasses, and that guy is Seishin. Then it shows a box.Im pretty sure Sunako is in there cause she was able to fit in that briefcase earlier a couple episodes back.So in the end they were the only 2 Shiki left and no one found out about them.Who knows where they’re driving. As for everyone else dead, except for the doctor and his followers.

I found this site to learn the ending of the funimation show. Thanks for the posts. I watched the series enough to be curious of the ending, but after the doctor got bit, I did not want to bear watching whatever was left of the remaining episodes. The show was too morbid for me, good guys losing every fricking episode is a pure and unnecessary bummer. Seeing all the good guys become shiki was awful. I would not watch it again if I knew it was going to be like that. I knew it would end with some kind of cliffhanger. Glad your posts proved it was not worth watching.

I think there should be more to shiki because of ending when seishin drove off with sunako in the back in a box knowing that both of them are Shiki and still alive they drive to the city but where exactly are they going to the city or to find another small town lets not forget tha there still could be more Shiki because of that one episode where Megami says she wants to be apart of the group of Shiki who go to the city and take people from there and bring them back for the weak Shiki who cant get people to feed on there could be Shiki still in the city living there this is why there should be more to Shiki because of the ending
