Gundam 00 Movie: Pixiedust Memories

This perfectly sums up the whole movie...

So I finally finished watching the Gundam 00 movie and to be upfront and honest it was pretty bad I have to say ELS takes the cake for being lamest villains ever in Gundam history. I speak not only of liquid metal fail on the level that would make T-1000 cry True Tears and get Liquid Snake to change his name, but also of another ELS, Extremely Lame Shipping. If there is a saving grace for Trailblazer is that there are still memorable moments but much of it is mired in a morass of last minute shipping and an excessive parade of homages that cover much of the length and breadth of science fiction. It is odd that a series that is labeling their Jihad-Jesus an innovator when the only thing they tried to innovate in was having aliens in Gundam. Even so the aliens are not a unique idea being pretty much ripped from Diebuster and the liquid metal thing was handled with less grace that an episode of Star Trek Voyager. Much of Trailblazer errs on the beaten path given the heavy use of homages to TTGL-esque combat, 2001 A Space Odyssey, Diebuster, Babylon 5, Macross, Star Trek (TMP in particular), Char’s Counterattack, Gundam SEED of all things, etc. I do like homages but if the whole movie is just a string of them punctuated by all to brief moments of brilliance, and beam spam with awful heavy handed shipping for the secondary characters no amount of homages will be able to save it from being a mess.

Extremely Lame Shipping...or ELS affects numerous shoujo who get put in movies with shipping without TRUE LOVE. ELS is formed by pools of tears that fail to qualify as True Tears or ShuTears and generated by lackluster series. They more commonly known as fake tears. Every day millions of innocent girls are affected by ELS, many do not survive. So please join the Sol Braves and donate money to charities across the Federation to make a decent Gundam 00 spin off. Together we can find a cure for ELS.

So after S2 Hillrod 00 brings about a new age of prosperity by giving into the demands of the Middle Eastern thugocracies and monarchies to ensure everlasting peace. Innovators have disproved Darwin’s theory of evolution and innovators are being activated slowly. Zekes are now showing up and making trouble in the colonies but old CB is there to stop them. In the mean time CB lays low instead of handing themselves in like they said they would. Rather they build yet another Gundam to sell more kits for Bandai as Jihad-kun has leveled up to Jihad-Jesus and so they venerate him, sadly they don’t turn him into a sand worm.

Saji and Louise revert to being useless, more so than in S1, as Louise despite being a Yuri-Powered Ace armed with True Love for Soma can now no longer pilot and is now suffering headaches. Saji tries to become a jock but can’t even play little league soccer, and spends his days watching superb Feddie 30 for 30 documentaries (the one he saw was Alejandro’s Counterattack) that basically blows all of Gundam 00 out of the water. Back in outer space a very bored T-1000 who was born of the fake tears of false love and failed relationships, hither to known as ELS, decided to turn into something other than a very cool assassin from the future. He makes his way to the Earth to assault those who Do Not Remember Love. A new movie only character, by the name of Shaman, goes out in a splendid mobile armor but instead of pulling a Gato beforehand and starting Operation Stardust to really ramp up the excitement he shoots the hell out of the a space probe that can’t fight back.

ELS comes back and CB being the FAIL Family that they are pretty much get their asses handed to them and their Jihad-Jesus starts sleeping on the job. Unfortunately for Graham Aker her has now become Jihad-Jesus’ NUMBER ONE FAN and leads the Sol Braves to the NLCS Championship, errr saves the day to tune of my rabid fanboy WARCHANT and TOMAHAWK CHOP. In one of the few awesome moments of combat. The Sol Braves do a variation on Boom and Zoom along with the Lufbery Circle to show CB how to get shit done. While the GNX-Y903 is “technically inferior” to the new fugly looking Zabanya, the Braves take the crown for best mecha in Trailblazer because the Gundam Designers got too carried away with festooning their Gundams with weapons and instead of reducing the armory to streamline their designs, kind of like Nu-Gundam. However they opt to instead drop the Dendorbium and Nu-Gundam setup and give Zabanya a wedding dress because since it worked in Wedding Peach it would also work here. Besides it makes Lockon’s butt look big and the staff seems to life long fans of Baby Got Back.

Patrick and Kati are happily married and go off to lead the defense of the Federation by setting up HQ in Ribbons’ mansion. Billy has been busy and gets a handout girlfriend because he made a deal with Hades and forsook Zeus because he could not get a girlfriend the Patrick way. So while discussing pseudo-science Billy gets glomped and jumped by this new Meena who sounds and looks a lot like Nena but sadly there is no stabby time only lame fanservice in lieu of a Kati and Patrick PASSIONATE KISS. Instead of giving us a kiss that mattered Billy and Meena kissed while viewers booed and heckled them harder than Philadelphia Eagles fans. So comes the final battle which is a turkey shoot where things are going bad, but colorful and FABULOUS until GARham shows Jihad-Jesus how to BE A MAN. Jihad-Jesus saves all of humanity my turning ELS into a flower. Later on Klaus gets the idea that he is Misa and decides to make a copy of Megaroad 1 with Ex-Gear copies to serve as work platforms to explore the Galaxy with innovators. You can catch all their adventures on MBC’s newest reality show Klaus’ Island will it be like Gilligan’s Island or will it end up like Lord of the Flies? Catch this and more from Sunrise.

Thoughts/MAD RANTS

If only it were Axis and this was Prince Ali's Counterattack...

Once again this huge cast gets bigger for no real reason, and they try to develop secondary characters that spent most of S1 and S2 doing little more than sit on their arses and look pretty. Marina, Feldt, and the not so subtle Nena or Meena take up a lot of time trying to get more fans. Given how they were so reluctant to kill any of the mains they probably would have been better off just sparing the hated ones they did kill so that they can be killed off in the Movie. I am sure Prince Ali could have been an easy stand in for Shaman, hell it probably would have done more to hammer home that simply being an innovator does not make you a good person. Meena or Mina is pretty much a Nena clone whose only discernible purpose is to give Billy a good end. This I think is pretty damn lame almost fan-fiction level lame it’s awful there is no setup you may as well give Billy a harem since there is no history to the pair and it contributes little if anything to the plot, underwhelming as it is.

If they want a fanservice character they may as well use Sumeragi since they already did it before and besides she is already cheap and easy whore that will put out tricks for whiskey shots. Marina at least did us the service of ditching the fat Seelian kid and her aspirations for a singing career. After that though we have to take as fact that Marina is a good and just ruler of a prosperous Azadistan by sitting on a couch and watching TV for most of S1 and S2. If any one really deserved to get the axe it probably would have been Marina and this Meena, it is decidedly late to make people care, and disgustingly desperate in the case of Marina where they still want the audience to embrace her as a model ruler.

Feldt I am sure had plenty of fans since emotionless waifs are a staple moe these days and this thing with Setsuna…it was like just one scene in S2 with a flower and then they make a whole subplot based on it. A shipping war is only fun if the ones involved generate fanboy and fangirl hysteria, it takes time as part of the fun of ship to ship combat is that it lasts for a season, you can’t have a shipping war in two hours and expect people to care. But to be fair they could at least say they tried to get the shipping war started…at the 11th hour when S2 ended on a rather lame note with Unlimited Gaga Works.

I feel very cheated that Patrick and Kati did not get to have a PASSIONATE KISS hell if they wanted romance sub plot they already had it in those two. Moreover both Kati and Patrick were better fleshed out than Meena and Billy… I hate that they wasted as much time as they did no Meena and Billy because it was not all that necessary, Patrick being Patrick could have asked enough questions to bring every one up to speed though I really do pity the people who get Trailblazer as their Gateway Gundam. Still much of the little enjoyment I had watching this movie was from seeing Kati and Patrick be happy together forever. Sadly their screen time paled in comparison lame relationships that weren’t terribly romantic and definitely forced. Between Meena and Billy alone you had enough justification for mocking the ELS “innovation” in Gundam as Extremely Lame Shipping.

Combat was ho-hum since every one had Trans-AM, funnels/fangs were every where, the cacophony of colors made it hard to ID who was dying since they took a clone wars approach, everything looked samey and out side of the Sol Braves, Diebuster-ELS, and CB. What is the point about spouting about the morality of war when it S2 pretty much ended all real fighting and all that was left was a turkey shoot against an alien intelligence that was lazily characterized with a still montage about how they miraculously survived their home star going supernova. Despite all the shout outs to Char’s Counter Attack and Gundam 0083 Trailblazer can’t even hold a candle against them. CCA was a final battle between Amuro and Char two characters who had a lot of history behind their feud. NinaxKouxGato was annoying but just as annoying as MenaxBilly but at least 0083 had more consistency and wasn’t wrapped up in homage and trying to elevate Kou to be some sort of savior.

Gundam 00 Trailblazer to me is a case study of how bad Sunrise’s “Me Too Mentality” for Gundam has gotten. they should do their own thing and not have to ape what everyone else is doing. Shipping was never a Gundam strong point until CE came along and to be frank at least in that regard Gundam 00 S1 and S2 seemed like a step forward but Trailblazer is the equivalent of three steps back. I don’t see the need to force a love triangle for Jihad-Jesus nor do I see any merit in a Billy pairing this late in Gundam 00. The latest Gundam designs seem more concerned with power levels and become overloaded with weapons instead of elegant aesthetics as seen in the GNX-903 Braves. I usually like Gundam designs hell I even think Wing Zero looked good in Endless Waltz, but these Trailblazer designs just look so hideous I am not sure if they simply got lost in festooning CB with guns or that the Braves are just that good looking.

Given how much they have borrowed from Macross I wished they took a page in how to integrate heavy armament with an elegant design. Given how they tried to make Marina a Minmay and make the Warship Sumeragi Megaroad 1 along with their EX-Gear copies I wish they would have gone with armor packs too. Even if it would come off as them being creatively bankrupt and below Kawamori’s level. It is kind of sad how the homages got way out of hand and made it come off as them cutting and pasting a bunch of good sci-fi scripts and pasted it all into one. ELS the alien didn’t really work because it doesn’t really communicate intent intent very well, the Vajra worked to a degree because they were developed over a course of 25 eps, here a lot is taken for granted. Moreover they don’t have a unique aesthetic since they borrowed from Diebuster and then something very Vorlon-esque before deciding to simply clone Feddie tech. For a sapient species that has been exploring for possibly eons certainly they wouldn’t need to copy Feddie and CB tech if they can cross star systems and survive supernovae.  At least with a unique aesthetic combat wouldn’t have degenerated into a light show that was hard to keep track of.

I really liked the movie in a movie as a super robot take on Gundam 00 probably would have worked better in the long run since Trailblazer and S1 couldn’t be any more different thematically. Fundamentally it is again too fantastic to be real robot and not hot-blooded enough to be super robot, the fact that they really borrowed more than they should have only emphasizes how Gundam isn’t really leading mecha trends any more they are following what other shows do. The variable fighter concept was borrowed in the aftermath of Macross SDFM, along with their failed attempts at bringing in a Minmay. I have never seen a movie try so hard to ship a new pair since even in CCA, Quess at least served a larger purpose. It was exasperating to see them ship Billy and Meena as hard as they did, I am still confused as to why they thought it a good idea. As much as I liked Alejandro’s Counterattack it was almost all homage, it wasn’t uniquely Gundam 00. All that Gundam seems to have now are basically fabulous colors, beam spam, pixie dust, a series of mecha that seem to be evolving more towards ridiculously heavy armament than being real robot at least in AU, and newtype messiahs.

I wish there was a lot more to love outside of KatixPatrick and the Sol Braves. I wished it had lived up to being a Trailblazer instead of being so mired in homage that they lost sight of being a Gundam 00 movie instead of a shout out to Science Fiction that depending on your view will either be well appreciated or come off as stupidly heavy handed. If only it were more like Stardust Memory in terms of plot coherency, theme, innovation, and pacing. If only it did provide a suitable end to a character conflict they way CCA did, but there was nothing left to solve but elevate Jihad-Jesus and bring in a turkey shoot to make more money. If they were going to borrow judiciously they should have thrown caution to the wind and given the Sol Braves the Tomahawk Chop and a Highway to the Dangerzone shout out.

Given how much iterations there are within Gundam 00 already I would like a ESPN 30 for 30 documentary treatment for the CB war in the vein of Alejandro’s Counterattack.  Just imagine how cool it would be to give the Flag Fighters and the Sol Braves the Top Gun treatment it wouldn’t have to be canon it could still be EPIC as simply Feddie Propaganda. Without the CB and the GN drive it could actually you know be real robot again. Why not animate the wars between the Union, AEU, and HRL, to see the rise of Aker, Kati, and Sergei? Why not fill in the gap between S1 and S2 to see how “vile” the A-Laws were and what desperate terror tactics Kataron resorted to to stay in the fight in the name of “peace and justice”? I want to see a spin off dealing with Kati, Sumeragi, and Billy’s college years. They can do plenty original things with the franchise they have a world built even if they don’t have a war it can still be mecha, it’s just sad to see that the title of Trailblazer is pretty much a misnomer.

If this is only part you read.

I found Gundam 00 to be generally bad with a few sweet but all too brief moments of awesomeness for the ages. Nevertheless it is something one has to see for themselves. It can be entertaining depending on who you are. But for me I was laughing and sighing at how excessive they had gone with homages to great sci-fi works and decided to heavily ship pairings and force a triangle this late in the franchise.

It's only a cool pose when done by a Flag.

GNX-704T Ahead Sango Custom.

Hey It think in know that guy...

So informative...

Reading the notes is half the fun.

Matsu GM ready to fight for Rokugan in the name of the Lion Clan...gets +3F when attacking.

Learning Japanese with subbers.

Behold the latest creation by Ispano!

Yes Way...

About the only time they looked cool...

Subs are so much more fun...

I like this decision.

So that is what became of Black Water...

Seems subbing involved more complexities than this plot...

If only the Koshin shout out was part of a larger borrowing from Giant Robo.

I have to say Feddies made a good call in making Trans-AM look cooler...

If only this were the real cast instead of the losers we got.

I wish they went with RAISER PUNCH instead...

Fuck you hippie, that was the the equivalent of Inglorious Basterds for Gundam.

Better than your last minute shipping attempt.

Damn you Hillrod 00! If 00bama were still in charge he would have given us cool new ships instead of fucking refits...

She is here to put you back on schedule, and will find new ways to motivate you...

If For a second there I though Lindt had come back from the dead.

A lame copy of a newtype.

Well Patrick only stupid people say they do. This Innovator stuff is about as scientific as thetans...

I miss 00bama...

Well someone has friended Patrick on Facebook...

Putin's ghost is not amused by your shitty plot.

What don't you wish to see how Ribbons has redecorated your home?

Just like this movie only pairing...

I guess he got bit by a GN Spider, guess we should be glad he's not wearing tights...

But for Lyle jerking off in his off hours to Anew's picture suffices.

Surely it can't be that...

Yeah for the first time in a long time Patrick has a point...

And that is why Patrick makes this movie so bearable.

DAMN IT, Kati with all due respect ma'am Patrick deserves a kissu. You're married it's time to be less tsun tsun and more dere dere.

I have to hand it to Kati she house broke that one fast...

The Vorlons are here but why didn't they rip off more from Babylon 5?

Since Shaman had white hair I wonder why he didn't put up a Gato Pony Tail...

Tomahawk CHOP!

If only one of them were named Hank Aaron...

I hope she named her Brave, Alex...

If only the Sol Braves were there for S2...

The Ultimate Power in the Universe is a ball of yarn, Let's hope Kirby unravels it.

You know after this they have got to promote her to Field Marshal at some point.

Kati told her men that in the absence of orders to go find some metal and scrap it.

The Giants are ahead by one run we can totally do this...

Aker...ugh never mind just don't give out pineapple salad before the sortie.

I want a spin off with just these guys.

Unlike Jihad-kun Patrick is not easily fooled.

He is, after all, the Immortal Colasour.

Lock S-Foils in attack position.

Extra Extra read all about it, Andrei an hero himself for Azadistan to redeem himself, EPIC FAIL!

Because the only True love in this movie belongs to Kati and Pat not Jihad-kun and Flower.

Indeed because Graham knows how this shit ought to be, if only he were the protagonist...

For those who last time.

If only it turned out like that old movie The Fan.

It is best that Aker does what Jihad-kun could not, i.e. sting a sentence together...

Okay...can I have my Rocket Emperor now?

Patrick's WTF pretty much sums up the end.

Yeah that was pretty you know stupid, a flower will save us all...

Gonzo was brought back from the dead to help make this possible...

You know what you fucktard that sounds pretty awesome because then it would be Battletech and then we would have the Eridani Light Horse instead Celestial Being and Innovadoes.

Yeah I'd rather be on Megaroad 1...

That's what you get for watching TV for all of S1 and S2! HAHA!

Being part of the crew that joined in the joint viewing, and taking in part with the heckling (I really let the movie had it with regards to Billy x Meena), I do still think that the movie is VERY enjoyable (probably because I locked up my inner literary critic in a closet), because of the fast pace, the action, and the high-quality animation. I wouldn’t exactly call the writing top-notch, but you have to work with what you have; you don’t watch this movie with the plot in mind, because this is an action movie through and through, and while it would be insulting to compare this to your Michael Bay-directed summer blockbuster, it’s pretty much cut from the same cloth.

The casual watcher WILL enjoy this movie though, as will the rabid Gundam fanboy, but let’s not delude ourselves that this was ‘perfect’ or ‘a masterpiece’. As a mode of entertainment, it succeeds in many ways, but cerebral viewing material it ain’t.

It’s in the same vein but as much as I wanted to enjoy the action it simply went too fast and with the clone wars it became rather hard to discern the rate of Feddie losses. I also admit that much of my distaste arose form ELS for Meena (worst part is it pretty much Nena and kind of a cop out) and Billy. Still I wish there was more to enjoy out side of Alejandro’s Counterattack, Sol Braces, and PatrickxKati.

It’s disappointing really I couldn’t have imagined what transpired but given what Unicorn was and the glory that was IGLOO 2 it is sad to see that this is the BLOOMING END. Hard to believe S1 and Trailblazer are both Gundam 00.

Well, this is the end of the Gundam 00 trip….and you hit every spot there Crusader!!!

Quite honestly, I was expecting a full fiasco….but the SoulBrave Squadron, KatixPatrick, and the flashy battles actually made the movie a simple fiasco.

I soo hated that Louise and Saji just do nothing in the whole movie and should have also being cut!!! Placing Louise in a Gadelazza and Saji as a frontline MS emergency maintenance crew should have been a way better plot line.

BTW!!! You sooo lack pictures of the Inmortal Colasour stand in the front!! Really surprise me that he actually went and fought from start to collapse point at the frontline , and actually was cool enough to make a “goodbye” call to Kati!!!

Either way, time to wait for Gundam Unicorn OVA 3, and the return of the DOM.

That good bye was classic Patrick no complaints and stoic to a fault. I am going to miss them both dearly.

what do you think of these potential changes for a rewrite

Marina is portrayed as a well meaning but flawed leader who nonetheless makes genuine efforts to improve her country

Setsunna is in his thirties, and is actually competant at tacts as well as blowing shit up and piloting. He and Marina could also have a rough start due to the fact that she is the ruler of the country that fucked up his country

Ali is his former teammate who couldn’t move on and is determined to either die in battle or see azadistan burn ( he kidnaps rachmadi to try and pin it on the other side partially to get revenge, leaving him alive only to let things build up for a bloody crescendo that CB VERY narrowly thwarts)

Celestial Being Only attacks other terrorist groups (for instance, while the moralia intervention was dickish, keeping azadistan from falling into civil war was actually kind of noble). it also makes a dilemma for the military since there are those who might privately support their beliefs (for instance graham let slip the info because he realized that celestial being had a chance to stop the bloodshed from getting worse).

A Laws have more pronounced douchebaggery

Ribbons is the one who recruited setsunna into the organization, making the reveal that he’s the big bad a rather nasty shock.

If Saji does meet nena he actually hits her for what she did, and experiences real growth (becoming tougher in combat, and displaying less weakness)

The Gundam meisters use team work and fight as a team.

You don’t like Season 1 compared to S2? What’s so bad about it? It’s my favourite out of the three ‘parts’… The story was deeper, the series was well planned, unlike S2 which felt jumpy and rushed in some parts.

no offense but how is setsunna a bad pilot? He held his own against Ribbons quite well and was able to crush Alejandro and Graham when both had Trans-Am. He’s not the best but he isn’t overly horrible.

Anyway this article….wow….talk about trying way too hard to sell a narrative as usual bro. Truth be told I had absolutely no idea where you were trying to go with this since it was just all over the place in pulling out all the stops to ditch on the film, but I sort of have to admire the tenacity with which you consistently go at the sub-franchise and ignore all logic and consistency in doing so. You truly continue as a disciple of Miao.

Just wow to you too…. There you go again Miao this, Miao that, it’s conspiracy, the NHK is out to kill Sunrise…. we should implant you with neko-mimi so that when you go MIAO it would at least look less sad and humorous to more people.

It’s not exactly mired in greatness and I didn’t demand it be what I want only that it fell below what I expected it to be Why can’t they just be Gundam and not ape all of Science Fiction in a parade of homages for the sake of homage? Why bother with Meena who looks and sounds like Nena to give Billy a Girlfriend and shove it down our throats? Why waste time with love triangle when there really wasn’t one to begin with? I just lament that this is about as far from S1 as they could have gotten.

If you had bothered to read instead of doing this AGAIN you would have gotten that I did lament how they borrowed excessively to the point it kind of stopped being Gundam. It’s fine it they want aliens but really liquid metal diebuster migrants? They could have made their own you know. You know actually innovate within the mecha genre instead of borrowing from other works, like be original. And to be perfectly honest why the hell do you bother to make your way here to make the same complaints over and over again. If there was any consistency it was a consistent downhill slide and consistently SEEDish with a new Jihad-Jesus to join Kira.

Hell I wish they did ape Babylon 5 and Star Trek hell it might have made for better Aliens at least. Get the Babylon 5 and DS9 teams to do a Gundam show? Hell if they did that how could they go wrong? It would be FUCKING EPIC.

But why do you do this every time without fail for no other reason than to be a little bitch about what other people post? You do your own damn thing and I’ll do mine. you think this belongs in the top 10 list of 2010 or 2011 fine believe what you want FUCKING POST IT for all I care, but for love of Tomino quit bitching about Jason. It’s like you made him your personal monster and you invoke his name as a sort of smug insult to just about every one who doesn’t give Sunrise 20 thumbs up.

Yeah Unicorn in 2 months and in when it happens you’ll be here to bitch and moan about Jason Miao with his Kyo-Ani allies and FOX news trying to ruin Gundam for all time. Even if you hold Trailblazer to be some universal truth with understanding brings PEACE bullshit your whiny attitude alone debunks it. Hell I understand you and your agenda but really just because I understand your habits and your thinking doesn’t mean I respect you. Hell you know Jason “so well” but you sure as hell don’t sound like you respect anyone but yourself and those who agree with you.

I don’t know why it can’t just be “gundam” (though I know everybody has a different definition of what Gundam is), but I know I don’t have that hangup and can accept change in Gundam….especially when Sunrise was still putting out U.C and Votoms stuff during the 4 years of 00 and that I could just turn around and watch some of that when I got tired of the different stuff like 00. Now was it perfect or handled better than every other storyline that tried to do the sort of thing we saw in this franchise, I would say that’s a profound no, but I found plenty to take away from it because again I’m not too particular about what I expect Gundam to be.

Your point is fair if you want Gundam a certain way, but I just don’t have that hang up so it’s kind of okay with me that it experiment, or as you call it, ape from other franchises. Though really I think Gundam has done plenty of innovating over the years, it did define a genre as I’m sure you know and has reinvented itself and gone back to it’s roots multiple times to match the interests of each era of fandom. We could break this all down to a discussion of shows that have borrowed from Gundam and vice versa over the years, right down to the flimsiest of comparisons even, but we could also be here forever and I’m sure you don’t want that and neither do I.

Anyway I can live with what Gundam 00 presented and appreciate it for what it was. Maybe it’s the 15 years experience I’ve had with the franchise, or maybe it’s just the general mellowing out I’ve gone through over time, because I did have a phase after being introduced to U.C where I thought all A.U Gundam series were wholly without merit and considered nothing they might have offered, but I’m just sort of cool when it comes to Gundam trying new things these days because it’s not like I’m not being presented with a whole bunch of alternatives at the same time. Had Sunrise not been putting out Votoms, Unicorn, Igloo and various other fare of the like at the same time though I very well might be where you are with the 00 franchise right now. I’d probably be pissed, but it’s hard to be too angry with so much choice these days, when I realize that A.U is the experimental sandbox for Gundam while U.C is still thriving and evolving it’s canon. Especially when as I like to mention these days I am getting it for free.

I can see the faults Gundam 00 has clear as day, even though I don’t agree with some of the things people claim are faults and some people probably don’t agree with some of the faults I find it has, but I can roll with it. It’s largely a net positive franchise for me, but nowhere near the likes of U.C or the like if that’s what people continue to think.

I still have no idea where you were going with this article though by the way, but now you’ve got me wishing that there was a DS9 style A.U Gundam show. Imagine a deep space outpost with Gundams and a large cast of characters built up over the span of 7 seasons of 1 hour long shows. I can dream can’t I?

It defined a genre back in the day but I don’t see trailblazer doing anything new other than the attempt at getting aliens in. Sunrise can do better IGLOO 2, Unicorn, and VOTOMS Phantom arc are proof of that, but quite why trailblazer gets so over indulgent is rather disappointing. This wasn’t their best and it they are capable of so much more, and yet this is how it ends. One day I will attribute the space flower to them smoking Kawamori’s weed pipe, but really Setrsuna comes back to either bone a blind 80 some Marina or uses GN MAGIC to make her young again? That is not how I could have ever imagined it to end.

But in the manga adaptation ending, after Setsuna returns 50 years later, he uses his hybrid powers to turn Marina young again and both of them get married.

Altho I agree with a lot of things you stated in this review… I only understood half of the review. The movie is bad. All that hype with Quan[T] and it never got to fight that long. The only part that made this movie memorable is the battle scenes. Altho too much going on during battle scenes, it was still good. Compared to Gundam Seed where 90% of the battles are repeated scenes. This would have been a very good review if it had lesser bashing and more content. For me… its a good review… IF I ignore all that bashing.

I like S1. S2 kind of destroyed the spirit of S1, becoming less serious and strategic and more just watching Setsuna blow shit up. And the ending… Trans-Am Burst… I have only one word for that: lame.
Still, S2 was still good and enjoyable, except for that dues ex machina fairy trapmother light thingy. And the sudden Feldt-flower-Setsuna thing.

I was so excited for Trailblazer, but heck it sucks. The new Gundams barely got any airtime, especially the Raphael and Qan[T]. They screw up, Raphael comes save them, then next battle Raphael kamikazes. Weak. The innovator dude and Galadeza were hyped up in the trailers but he coughed out really fast. I thought he was going to fight CB from the trailer.

I hate this whole “understand each other” theme. It’s a friggin mecha anime, I want shit blown up. And that flower is just stupid! What the hell did Setsuna do with them anyways = = he said he was going to their home planet, fired some pixel dust, and all of a sudden they made a flower.

    1) Everyone other than Soul Braves, Kati + Patrick = Total lose
    2) The FLAG is the now the preeminent Mass Production model platform, not Gundam/GNX types
    3) The Aliens seem pretty much like the mass alien blob that eats planets and we made peace with them… right…

Yeah I am not sure why they thought it would be so damn relevant they hardly cared much for it for S1 and S2, a case can be made for Marina and Setsuna but it was so awkward and hardly registering as romance. FeldtxSetsuna was a last minute thing in S2 and then it becomes a big subplot for Trailblazer… it hardly mattered to the grand scheme of things only perhaps to show how Jihad-Jesus loves all living things…

When I read those translation notes, I could think of only one thing:

“Just as keikaku.” (Note: “Keikaku means ‘plan’.”)

On the note of the movie itself, I think it’s almost unfair — on the level of beating up an asthmatic child — to compare this obvious cash-in with the awesomeness that was Char’s Counterattack. I mean, sure, they both wear the name “Gundam”, but still…

If they really wanted to reference previous works, what they should have done was have Schenberg’s loli great-great-great-great-granddaughter as the antagonist for this movie, preferably taking over where Ribbons left off in his quest for TRUE INNOVATION (whatever that is). If nothing else, I’m sure a precocious child could come up with a better strategy than Ribbons’ GENIUS idea of mass Trans-Am shaheed, amirite? Non-humanoid aliens? In my Gundam? Nice try…

Finally, I’m glad Graham Aker got a closer to his story, even if he did have to go down defending that insufferable little jihadist’s vision.

They had a long tradition of movies to live up to and given how they went so far as to reference CCA I wish they lived up to the standards that CCA had set. Instead we got a lame new alien race that was used for a turkey shoot.

Endless Waltz was better at least the music was handled better. Also at least in Endless Waltz they were better able to utilize their Gundams instead of wasting their new designs as they did here. Not to mention the Brave was the best looking MS in the whole movie to boot.

Glad Aker went out like a hero too bad it was for the sake of his new Setsuna’s BIGGEST FAN angle.

My cousin forwarded me a torrent of the low-res of the movie (because frankly I didn’t have enough space for a whopping 12-GIG monstrocity) and I found it okay. It’s a bit light on plot though, but this seems to be a fast-paced action movie through and through so it’s okay. Some things could have done better though (like the choice of aliens), and some things could have definite been cut out (I rolled my eyes at Mina Carmine) or expanded (the epilogue to include what happened to everyone else), but as a stand-alone popcorn flick it was worth it.

I have yet to see the movie, but reading your review has been really fun! :)

Divine over at RC had a completely different opinion about this movie, and since RC and T.H.A.T are both blogs I follow, I’m interested to see where I stand on the spectrum for this one.

I have heard that the subtitles left something to be desired? I’m waiting for a good quality [BSS] subbed version to come out. I think I read somewhere they had almost completed it, so less time to wait!

Thanks again for the review! As always, your added captions are perhaps the best part of the review. :P

      Posted January 10, 2011 at 9:26 pm | Permalink

Divine does a good job blogging many shows but has an unfortunate tendency to be extremely lenient towards anime. He’s not much of a critic. I can’t even remember the last time he had anything bad to say about any episode.

At the end of the day, you’ll just have to watch this yourself to make up your own mind about it. It would’ve actually been better for you to watch it before reading and being influenced by other people’s opinions, but it’s a bit too late for that now.

The subtitles are okay, there is a pure comedy track (what the subbers dubbed as the “literal” subs), which is what appears in the captions in this post, and a normal subtitle track, which is what you ought to watch unless you want brain damage.

Just saw the movie, and I think I definitely need another version of the subs because the ones I read were kind of disjointed and left many thoughts incomplete. ><

But I liked the movie a lot, despite it being very overdone in a lot of ways. I can see how the plot is kind of weird, and I totally agree with Crusader that the shipping was unnecessary and just awkward (although I think that Feldt x Setsuna wasn't really a love relationship to me, more like friends who have been through a lot). Overall though, the movie did a decent job ending the series. The old cast was reunited, this was their final mission, Setsuna turned into a grey person with glowing eyes (haha), and we get closure and the final message of understanding how peace is supposed to be kept. The ending shot was beautiful in that it tied the movie back (in one way) to the second season's 4th ending (the one accompanied by Ito Yuna's song "Trust You"). I also quite enjoyed Setsuna and Marina meeting once again…too bad we didn't get to see the CB cast reunited with Setsuna (or maybe they did). ^^

I found it a likable movie. wasn’t too taxing on the brain, but that’s okay. did what it was designed to do, wrap up the important loose ends (i.e. not the shipping)

granted the plot did have have a few flaws, but lets be honest since when has gundam as a whole EVER tried to be a tad more subtle than a controlled demolition by a group of clowns and had a decent well written plot, the one exception that proves the rule being Turn A? (which incidentally has the most overpowered gundam in existence, period.)

this movie, at the very least, attempted to break a lot of cliches in a franchise that is known for them. for one, the sixth sense to mutual understanding actualy works as listed on the tin, which is something that has hardly ever happened in gundam (case in point: in chars counterattack, char and amuro understood eachother perfectly yet still tried to kill eachother, add to that the likes of haman and sirocco, the idea that newtypes will lead to mutual understanding and will be above the concept of war switfly gets torpedoed, even the much hated Cosmic era follows the gundam trend with jesus yamato subjugating all who oppose him with beam spam) if 00 were like any other gundam show, it would’ve ended with the earth federation defeating the ELS in a show of overwhelming firepower rather than comming to an understanding with them, while 00 ends the conflict (which was about to end with the esf being overwhelmed) with diplomacy, yes other gundam shows usually end with peace talks but thats not on the same order as setsuna teleporting off and acting as an ambassador and ending the fight permanently (which is very telling of how he’s developed as all the way back in S1 when he was an angsty teenager, he outright despised the notion of diplomacy, use use of the flag agaisnt the GN-XIII’s also shows his skill as a pilot, that he doesn’t need an GN powered gundam to kick ass)

it was also great to see that saji and louise are trying to move on with their lives, despite the unjustified hate they seem to recieve from every which direction (“negative reactions to war? in MY giant robot animu? how dare he!”) was also great to see that he figuredo ut what wrestlers have known for centuries, when you throw a folding chair you unlock its HIDDEN POWER

the bit with the movie within a movie was a moment of fridge brilliance when you realise that the ‘hippie’s’ comment about it being progadana is rather on the ball, as its setting up alejandro corner as the fall guy while making the federation look good despite the fact that they were the ones who came up with the A-LAWS to begin with, as the old saying goes ‘history is written by the winners’

and i quite liked the fact that it ended on a happy note, optimism certainly isn’t a bad thing to see every now and then, after all the idea behind most forms of media is escapism, whats the point of trying to escpae the dreayness of life by jumping into GRIMDARK DESPAIR like UC loves to?

say what you will about the film, but it was rather different from other gundam titles, it may not be perfect or original, but nothing in this world truely ever is *goes back to watching super robot wars OG: the inspectors*

ps: amusing how everyone is strangely quiet about setsuna joing the exclusive club of flag fighters early on in the film

    • Crusader
      Posted January 19, 2011 at 3:15 pm | Permalink

The S1 Flag Fighters have come and gone, Jihad-Jesus had a hand in wiping most of them out. As for the new Dream Team that would be the Sol Braves, which Jihad-Jesus is not a part of. It’s like the S1 Flag Fighters were the New England Patriots in the early 2000s, Jihad-Jesus comes in at a point when the Flag Fighters are now the “one and done” team. Heck it was pretty much one and done with that Flag. Also this is after his new innovator status which is the equivalent of using steroids to win the Olympics… yeah not that impressive.

It was great that they tried to boldly go where no Gundam has gone before but still shit was pretty damn awful with the ELS and SPACE FLOWER OF UNDERSTANDING. Also I did not hate Saji and S1 Louise for having a negative reaction I hated them because they were useless and taking up precious screen time from Patrick and Katie as well as Prince Ali. Besides we have plenty of whiny little pricks in Gundam already Saji is nothing new.

As for the fridge brilliance Gundam 00 gave up the right to talk seriously about anything long LONG ago. Hell they did not treat any subject matter with any depth or seriousness and yet now they have a hippie bitching and moaning like some puss cake liberal talking trash about Inglorious Basterds being fascist propaganda? Well Sir I for one hated the hippie because he did not see how wonderful and glorious it could have been if Gundam 00 were really like that shit would have been better. Hell the fictional CB was already ten times better than the one we got. Besides after S2 and this Gundam 00 is like a pretentious liberal who may or may not have a point but got lost in loving the sound of his own prattle.

Who cares if it is propaganda? Super Robot Gundam 00 was better than this craptastic movie. It did not have to be GRIM DARK but seriously a SPACE FLOWER and a silver Jihad-Jesus banging an old blind lady…? This is some how an improvement? Besides Aeolia is a fucking retard understanding does nothing respect and trust are what is required to move forward. Lastly who cares if becomes Aeolia’s worst nightmare? We would have the Battletech universe instead of the knockoff Macross ending they gave us.

Just because it’s different doesn’t mean that it is good, I am glad you did not find it too taxing on the brain but damn I feel like I lost brain cells watching it.

Glad you mentioned wrestling because like so much else in Gundam 00 shit was so fake, and krather face plamy. Besides wrestling is on the out, UFC is in, and real sports are so much more interesting than scripted drivel.

I personally did not enjoy the movie at all and I agree with a lot of the review that was written here. I laughed pretty hard, I had to read the review and watch the movie at the same time actually made the movie enjoyable :)

UC Is one of my favorites.

I do love the Mechs from Seed Destiny but the plot sucked and I did like Custom Hell and Wing Zero Custom but meh…..

In any case, Gundam 00 ruined a lot of gundam’s image in my eyes. We have all these newcomers to the series in love with Gundam 00 and they look at the past gundam franchise and call it outdated and stupid.

    Good job on the review

Replace cruisers with the Enterprise. Replace kati and crew with jean luc and friends. ELS = Borg.

Or have it just set as x-files in space and have mulder flying the 00.

the most irritating part was that they literally repeated the title over and over like a typical Bollywood movie sheer crap. And I agree the ending was horrible.
