2011 Summer Season Preview

Summer: a great season to stay inside in the air conditioning. -EO

Welcome to T.H.A.T. Anime Blog’s summer 2011 season preview. A whole bunch of new shows are coming out in the upcoming season, as well as second seasons of several more. The THAT team’s expectations and predictions below the cut. [Apologies for the delay. I was going to write this up at first, as much as I hate writing season previews, then got distracted by relocating and starting work. Luckily comrade Mystlord picked up the burden and did a great job writing this up and providing plenty of detail. Enjoy! -EO]

The traditional disclaimer:

A Message from the NKVD: Well its time once again to point out this is a preview, and not a review. That “p” makes a difference a very big difference in fact. On another note many of us are old grouchy mean spirited cynics and not wide eyed idealistic fat cat communist NEETs. If you are part of the “animu is SRSfkn business” part of the fandom do yourself a favor and just read the summary from ANN so you can preserve your fragile optimism for your harem animu. Other than that Liberty Prime is watching and ready to initiate directive 7395, destroy all communists.

Animation Studio: Madhouse (High School of the Dead, The Tatami Galaxy, Death Note)
Website: http://www.animax.co.jp/marvelanime/blade/
Available Trailers: Preview 1
Source: Comic
Genre: Action
Air Date: 07/01
Summary: “Blade” Eric Brooks — known as Blade — seeks revenge on Deacon Frost, the vampire lord who killed his mother while she was still pregnant with Eric. With all the powers of a vampire and none of their weaknesses, Blade’s quest leads him throughout Southeast Asia in search of Frost, and, in Vietnam, he discovers a vampire plot that threatens to take down the whole world.
Additional Details: This is the fourth and final installment in the Marvel Anime series, which has consisted of, in order, Iron Man, Wolverine, and X-Men.

Writer’s Commentary:
ExecutiveOtaku: I’m just not into Marvel stuff. Pass.
Hana: Not a Blade fan to begin with, so, along with the scars I still bear from Iron Man, I have more than enough reasons to pass on this.
Chronolynx: Have not watched the other Marvel/Madhouse collaborations. Not gonna start now.
Mystlord: I’ve only ever gotten 1/3 of a way through one of these. Honestly, the problem is that there are just far more interesting and original animes to watch besides this.
Crusader: Sadly this is one of those rare times we get a Black guy as the protagonist, but it’s baseball season… so pass.
ghostlightning: I haven’t recovered from Iron Man.

Uta no Prince-sama: Maji Love 1000%

Animation Studio: A-1 Pictures (Ao no Exorcist, AnoHana, Fractale, Anime no Chikara)
Website: http://utapri.tv/
Available Trailers: None
Source: PSP Game
Genre: Bishounen, Comedy, Romance, Harem, Shoujo
Air Date: 07/02
Summary: Nanami Haruka wants to be a song writer, so she attends an idol training school filled with beautiful bishounen. The school pairs each aspiring songwriter with an aspiring idol, but Haruka finds herself paired with 3 idols! To make things more difficult, Nanami is also not allowed to date any of her beautiful partners!
Additional Details: The director has previously done Giant Killing and Zero no Tsukaima (1st season). The scriptwriter… I don’t even know what’s going on here, but she’s series composer for Kimi no Todoke, Nodame Cantabile, and Chii’s Sweet Home. How did she end up on this one…?

Writer’s Commentary:
ExecutiveOtaku: Not interested unless it’s terribad, in which case I may watch a few episodes for laughs.
Hana: Looks like standard, reverse-harem fluff. Then again, it can’t be worse than what I could bear to watch of Starry Sky was, so might check it out for the bishies. (*Has a high tolerance level for bishies… but a low tolerance level for poor storytelling and character development… yeah we’ll see how many minutes I last…*)
Chronolynx: Only if the feedback is positive. Unlikely.
Mystlord: Lolololol. Somehow I don’t think that this will be the series that gets me watching harem shows.
Crusader: Will only be worth watching if Nanami has a fever and the only prescription is more cowbell.
ghostlightning: Will check out if other viewers provide positive feedback, but otherwise I am disinterested.

Sacred Seven

Animation Studio: Sunrise (Tiger & Bunny, Gundam franchise)
Website: http://www.sacred7.jp/
Available Trailers: Preview 1
Source: Original Work
Genre: Action, Sci-Fi
Air Date: 07/02
Summary: A “new school battle action” project by anime studio Sunrise.
Additional Details: None of the director’s previous works particularly jump out, unless you have watched and loved stuff like Witchblade or Galaxy Angel Z. The scriptwriter is experienced, having written the script for large chunks of Naruto, and supervising the script for Karas.

Writer’s Commentary:
ExecutiveOtaku: Looks like boring, standard action show but then I saw the mecha. Will give the first episode a shot because of the mecha, but not expecting much based on that preview.
Hana: As awesome as Tiger and Bunny is turning out to be, I think I’ll await feedback from other viewers before I shake off the feeling of ‘Looks like boring, standard action show’ that I too get from the info and P.V.
Chronolynx: I am tempted to say no, but after the surprise that was/is Tiger and Bunny I will give this a chance.
Mystlord: I echo Chronolynx and GL’s thoughts about the Tiger and Bunny thing.
Crusader: I’ll let one of the other guys jump on this grenade, seems like there is no shortage of would be heroes for this one.
ghostlightning: It’s something I am interested in by default, so I will check it out. Tiger and Bunny proved to be well worth the chance so I find no reason not to try this one out.

Kami-sama no Memo-chou

Animation Studio: JC Staff (Toaru Majutsu no Index series, Bakuman, Aoi Hana)
Website: http://www.kamimemo.com/
Available Trailers: Trailer 1
Source: Light Novel
Genre: Detective
Summary: Narumi Fujishima is a plain high school boy, who has been isolated in the class. His classmate, Ayaka Shinozaki, invites Narumi to the gardening club and introduces a hikikomori detective named Alice to him. Alice hires Narumi as an assistant to solve mysterious cases involving an illegal drug “Angel Fix”. But the drug entraps Ayaka into danger.
Air Date: 07/02
Additional Details: The director is Sakurabi Katsushi. Not ringing a bell? He did the Tsukihime adaptation. More recently, he also did Uragiri wa Boku no Namae o Shitte Iru. The series composer did Railgun and Occult Gakuin, and has worked with the director before on Railgun, since Sakurabi did the shot layouts for that series.

Writer’s Commentary:
ExecutiveOtaku: Hard to tell from that trailer how serious or lighthearted this will be. The tone says it might have a serious feel, the Index-like visuals and J.C. Staff make me think it’ll be lighter fare. Will check out first episode.
Hana: I’m drawn by the mystery vibe, the visuals and the staff’s previous work, so it gets the first epi test from me.
Chronolynx: No idea how this’ll turn out, but protag-kun looks decently cute to warrant my interest.
Mystlord: I think the direction of the anime will be blatantly clear by the first episode, so I’ll give it a 3 episode test.
Crusader: The attempt at word play is appreciated but too hard to call at this point, Mystlord wants to step up to bat, so we’ll know if he strikes out soon.
ghostlightning: Will check out if other viewers provide positive feedback, but otherwise I am disinterested.

Nurarihyon no Mago: Sennen Makyou

Animation Studio: Studio DEEN (Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka?, Higurashi, Umineko, Dragon Crisis)
Website: http://www.nuramago.jp/
Available Trailers: Trailer 1
Source: Manga adaptation.
Genre: Action, Shounen, Fantasy
Summary: The sequel to the first series.
Air Date: 07/03
Additional Details: The director and series composer/scriptwriter have been changed from the first season, but the rest of the staff remains the same. The new director has had a lot of experience as a freelancer, having worked on the storyboards for a ton of different shows, like Star Driver, Negima!?, Pani Poni Dash!, and Gankutsuou. However, his only previous directing experience is with Hyakko and Mayoi Neko Overrun! The series composer is primarily a novelist, and his only previous experience as a series composer was for Akikan!

Writer’s Commentary:
ExecutiveOtaku: Didn’t watch the first one, not watching it now.
Hana: What EO said.
Chronolynx: Dropped the first season due to adaptational disappointment. Have since dropped the manga. No thank you.
Mystlord: Dropped the first season because… Umm… I don’t remember. I think it had something to do with the fact that the show seemed to lack coherence. Anyway, I’m not willing to pick this up again.
Crusader: What EO said.
ghostlightning: What EO said.

Ikoku Meiro no Croisée: The Animation

Animation Studio: Satelight (Fairy Tail, Basquash!, Macross Frontier)
Website: http://ikokumeiro.com/
Available Trailers: Preview 1
Source: Manga Adaptation
Genre: Seinen
Air Date: 07/03
Summary: The story takes place in the second half of the 19th century, as Japanese culture gains popularity in the West. A young Japanese girl, Yune, accompanies a French traveller, Oscar, on his journey back to France, and offers to help at the family’s ironwork shop in Paris. Oscar’s nephew and shop-owner Claude reluctantly accepts to take care of Yune, and we learn how those two, who have so little in common, get to understand each other and live together in the Paris of the 1800s.
Additional Details: Yuuka Aoi’s in this one for all of her fans. The director is the same as the one for every season of Shugo Chara. However, the real talent in this show is in the series composer. The series composer, Satou Junichi, is a veteran of the anime industry, having directed ARIA, Princess Tutu, Sailor Moon, Tamayura, and the deputy storyboarder (behind Anno) of the End of Evangelion movie. The scriptwriter has worked closely with Satou Junichi on several of his projects, though the scriptwriter is more well known for his work on Kobato., Kaichou wa Maid-sama, and Keroro Gunsou.

Writer’s Commentary:
ExecutiveOtaku: I’ve never been a fan of pre-WWI France, or French culture in generally really, so the setting doesn’t appeal to me. Neither do the loli-looking characters. Pass unless I hear something to make me change my mind.
Hana: Ooh, it looks so pretty… is what I was thinking until I saw and heard more of the annoying loli. Pass.
Chronolynx: Could be interesting. On the other hand, I want to strangle that girl.
Mystlord: Ehhhh the trailer turns me off from the show. Adopting a wait and see policy on this one.
Crusader: It looks so pretty but I am expecting a dip in animation at some point, still it strikes my curiosity so I may as well. Would be EPIC if this was to take place before the Franco-Prussian War you know when France was the premier military power in the world and the Japanese were head over heels in love with the French methods of war.
ghostlightning: Fish out of water cultural stories/non-stories are interesting. I’ll check this out. Can it be deculture?

Natsume Yuujinchou San

Website: http://www.nasinc.co.jp/jp/natsume-anime/
Available Trailers: None
Source: Manga Adaptation
Genre: Drama, Fantasy, Shoujo
Air Date: 07/04
Summary: The third season of Natsume Yuujinchou.
Additional Details: The staff and cast remains the same as before, with the sole exception of the series composer. They’re switching out the series composer who did the previous two seasons of the series and bringing in an equally as accomplished scriptwriter, Murai Sadayuki, who has done the scripts for Boogiepop Phantom, Kino no Tabi, and Perfect Blue.

Writer’s Commentary:

ExecutiveOtaku: I really need to get to watching the first two seasons of this at some point. I’ll watch this, just not any time soon since I’ve got those other seasons to watch first…
Hana: Recently started watching this series as a whole and I am loving it. Thus, unless I suddently hate how the remainder of what I’ve yet to see of season two turns out, then I’ll defo watch and possibly (co-)blog it.
Chronolynx: Holy mother of Lain, YES! You do not know how long I have been waiting for this. Yes. 100%. Without a doubt.
Mystlord: Haven’t watched the first two seasons, so no.
Crusader: Chronolynx has got this one.
ghostlightning: I won’t be watching sequels of shows I haven’t kept up with.

Yuru Yuri

Animation Studio: Doga Kobo (Hoshizora e Kakaru Hashi, Shin Koihime Musou)
Website: http://yuruyuri.com/
Available Trailers: Preview 1
Source: Manga adaptation.
Genre: Comedy, Daily Life, Shoujo-Ai
Air Date: 07/04
Summary: Four fun-loving schoolgirls take over the former room of a tea ceremony club for their own “Gorakubu” (amusement club)
Additional Details: The director and series composer did Minami-ke and Mitsudomoe together.

Writer’s Commentary:
ExecutiveOtaku: On the one hand, I like yuri either as comedy or as serious romance. On the other hand, I’m not sure I’d like this sort of approach to it. It reminds me of several yon-koma adapatations that I either hated or felt indifferent about (Mitsudomoe, MM!, A Channel, Seitokai Yakuindono etc.) Will give first episode a try and then likely drop it. I hold out a tiny, tiny bit of hope because it has the Minami-ke director working on it.
Hana: Oh god this looks like everything I hate about anime all rolled into one. *Shudders*
Chronolynx: Yuri. No.
Mystlord: The preview image has me weirded out. All 4 are identically proportioned, with the only real difference being their color palette and hair styles. I’m getting repulsed just based on the art alone. And recent 4-koma adaptations are just not to my taste, so count me out for this one.
Crusader: Sure I’ll jump on this one.
ghostlightning: Will check out if other viewers provide positive feedback, but otherwise I am disinterested.

Kaitou Tenshi Twin Angel: Kyun Kyun Tokimeki Paradise!!

Animation Studio: JC Staff (Nodame Catabile, Honey and Clover, Shakugan no Shana, Index/Railgun)
Website: http://twin-angel.tv/top/en/ (An English version! Kind of.)
Available Trailers: Preview 1
Source: Pachinko Game Adaptation (I don’t get it either)
Genre: Magical Girl
Air Date: 07/04
Summary: Haruka Minazuki and Aoi Kannazuki are freshman high school students and best friends. During the day they help with school activities but at night they thwart enemies like Black Auction and other villains as Red Angel and Blue Angel, the Twin Angel team.
Additional Details: This is kind of like the Dog Days of Summer season. The Seiyuu lineup: Kugimiya Rie, Onosaka Mayasa, Noto Mamiko, Asano Masumi, Yuzuki Ryoka, Horie Yui, and etc. Staff is ok, featuring the director of Hayate no Gotoku!!, Zero no Tsukaima, Lova Hina, and the primary scriptwriter of Ookami-san.

Writer’s Commentary:
ExecutiveOtaku: Looks incredibly lame. And what’s with pachinko games getting adaptations? That has to be the single worst source material for…ANYTHING you could choose. Pass.
Hana: No, just no.
Chronolynx: Couldn’t make it through the OVAs. Probably isn’t worth it.
Mystlord: Well I actually watched all of Dog Days for some mysterious reason, so maybe I’ll keep it up with this one?
Crusader: You know what else also has the Dog Days of Summer? Baseball.
ghostlightning: Not interested.

Kamisama Dolls

Animation Studio: Brains Base (Kuragehime, Durarara!!, Baccano, Dororon Enma-kun)
Website: http://www.kamisama-anime.jp/
Available Trailers: Trailer 1
Source: Manga adaptation.
Genre: Seinen
Air Date: 07/05
Summary: Kyouhei, after moving away to Tokyo from his old town to get away from the events that happened, is on a goukon with his friends, including his old neighbor, Shiba. After drinking for a whole night, he and Shiba discover a dead, bloody body in the elevator. He is told by his younger sister, Utao with her Kamisama Doll, that Aki, an old friend, and his Doll are the culprits responsible.
Additional Details: The director is of Seto no Hanayome and Angel Beats! fame (or perhaps infamy?), and the primary scriptwriter has done… A lot of different stuff. He wrote the script for Kore wa Zombie desu ka?, Seikon no Qwaser, Katanagatari, School Days, and more. He’s worked with the director before on Seto no Hanayome and Tentai Senshi Sunred.

Writer’s Commentary:
ExecutiveOtaku: Hmmm, looks kind of interesting. The robot doll thing doesn’t seem like my cup of tea but it seems promising enough to look into. And the antagonist(?) has Accelerator voice if I’m not mistaken. Three episode test for this one.
Hana: Hmm, looks like one of the better ones out of what I’ve seen so far of the mystery/ action shows, so I’ll give it the first epi test.
Chronolynx: My first instinct is BRAINS BASE, YES. But after the preview I can’t help but think this looks pretty stupid (and not in an Enma-kun sort of way).
Mystlord: Ummm for some reason I got a Shakugan no Shana vibe out of the preview trailer. I’m not sure why… Anyway, this is a maybe on my part.
Crusader: Well I would have been most eager had they called them action figures instead of dolls…
ghostlightning: Will check out if other viewers provide positive feedback, but otherwise I am disinterested.

Morita-san wa Mukuchi

Animation Studio: Studio Gram (First work, aside from some assistance on GOSICK)
Website: http://www.takeshobo.co.jp/sp/moritasan/
Available Trailers: Trailer 1
Source: 4-koma manga adaptation.
Genre: Comedy, Seinen
Air Date: 07/05
Summary: Morita Mayu, a high school girl. She is extremely reticent and her silence and habit of looking at people’s eyes straightly sometimes cause misunderstanding. The reason behind it is not because she doesn’t like to talk nor because she has nothing to say. The reason she rarely speaks is due to the fact she thinks too much before speaking, thus losing the timing to speak altogether. But she lives a happy school life with her classmates.
Additional Details: The director is a novice, though he has worked as a freelance key animator for quite some time on a lot of different projects. He is also the supervisor for Steins;Gate. The script is also written by a novice, though he has helped to write the script for Seikon no Qwaser II. Basically a wildcard staff. As for Seiyuu, Hanazawa Kana will voice the main character. The rest of the cast is a mixed bag, with some unknowns voicing some people, but there’s also Nanjou Yoshino (Sasa from Hourou Musuko) and Hayami Saori (Tsurumi from AnoHana, Wako from Star Driver).

Writer’s Commentary:

ExecutiveOtaku: Reminds me of the same shows that Yuru Yuri reminded me of. And I won’t be watching it for the same reasons.
Hana: I would like to hope that there is some sort of story somewhere in that summary. However, that, and the ‘cute girls doing cute things’ vibe I’m getting, are a collective turn-off for me.
Chronolynx: Hanazawa Kana. No thanks.
Mystlord: Who the hell came up with that summary? Likely a no from me.
Crusader: A bunch of eager young rookies with everything to prove eh? Well I’ll wait for the scouting report to see if these guys can play in the big leagues.
ghostlightning: Not interested.

Appleseed XIII

Episodes 1-3

Animation Studio: Production I.G. (Ghost in the Shell: SAC, Kimi ni Todoke, Higashi no Eden)
Website: http://www.appleseed13.jp/
Available Trailers: Trailer 1
Source: Manga adaptation.
Genre: Sci-fi, action, mecha.
Air Date: 07/06
Summary: In the wake of the destruction of a worldwide non-nuclear war, the city Olympus has become the control center of the world. Run by Bioroids (cloned humans made from only the best DNA), it is defended from terrorists by special military forces. Among these are former LAPD SWAT member Deunan Knotts and her multipurpose cyborg partner Brialeos. They face a challenge from the Human Liberation Front and its terrorist underbelly the Argonauts. The leader of this group, Al Ceides, supposedly died 20 years ago in an attack on Poseidon, but now his shadow emerges once again.
Additional Details: Based on the manga by Masamune Shirow of Ghost in the Shell fame.

Writer’s Commentary:
ExecutiveOtaku: Looks really cool. The setting looks cool, as do the mecha, and it has a good original writer and production studio behind it. Though I’m not entirely convinced at this point that it will be able to pull off the mystery element that features prominently in the trailer. We’ll see how that goes, I just get a bad feeling from it. That said, I’ll definitely be watching it, maybe blogging if I like it enough.
Hana: The genre, as well as what I’ve just seen and read, simply doesn’t interest me, so it’s a pass from me.
Chronolynx: Don’t know if I can get past the CGI.
Mystlord: The release schedule for this thing is so screwy. Well I might end up watching this during some down time or something.
Crusader: I want to like this…but that CGI hump is one that may take a while to get over.
ghostlightning: Everything I’ve seen from this franchise sucked, so I have little expectations from this one. At the very least the robot action should be worth checking out for me.

Nyanpire The Animation

Animation Studio: Gonzo (Strike Witches, Bokurano, Gantz)
Website: http://www.nyanpire.jp/
Available Trailers: Trailer 1
Source: Doujinshi manga adaptation
Genre: Kids, VAMPIRE CATS.
Air Date: 07/06
Summary: A heartwarming story about a stray black cat, who was given blood from a vampire. He was taken in by a girl Misaki and started live with her. Nyanpire’s favorite phrase is “Give me blood nya.”
Additional Details: First of all, vampire cats. This is actually Gonzo’s first work in 2 years. The director is primarily a character designer/animation director, having worked on Trigun: Badlands Rumble, Slayers, and Basquash!. The series composer is extremely experienced, and has worked as a series composer for Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, Nurarihyon no Mago Season 1, Togainu no Chi, and Moyashimon. Finally, vampire cats.

Writer’s Commentary:

ExecutiveOtaku: VAMPIRE CATS. No idea what to expect from it other than cuteness, but I’ll give it a shot.
Hana: NYAMPIRE CATS, you mean, EO. I mean, that clearly says it all. *Whistles to herself.*
Chronolynx: While certain people on twitter seem very enthused about this one, I do not care of vampires or cats. So. Pass.
Mystlord: This. Will. Be. Awesome. Gonzo returns with an absolute winner. I will so be watching this. Blogging? Eh who knows~
Crusader: Either way it’ll end up sucking…nya
ghostlightning: Not interested.

Animation Studio: Bones ( Star Driver, Eureka 7, GOSICK, Darker than Black)
Website: http://www.no-6.jp/
Available Trailers: Trailer 1, Trailer 2
Source: Sci-Fi Novel Adaptation.
Genre: Josei, Sci-Fi
Air Date: 07/07
Summary: The story is set in No. 6, a future model city in 2013. Raised as a top-ranking elite since the age of 2, a boy named Shion lives in an exclusive area in No. 6. On the night of his 12th birthday, he rescues a boy who calls himself Nezumi (Rat). Nezumi ran away from the city’s Special Security Area. From that moment on, Shion’s life is changed forever…
Additional Details: This is running in the NoitaminA timeslot. This will be Kenji Nagasaki’s first directing position, though he has worked as an episode director and storyboarder for Mobile Suit Gundam 00 and Kiba. The series composer did the script for Bakuman and co-wrote the script for Paprika.

Writer’s Commentary:
ExecutiveOtaku: It’s noitaminA so that automatically gets a watch. It looks interesting but I’ll have to see more to get a better idea about it. Also, am I the only one getting a yaoi vibe from it? Those two characters just scream uke and seme to me.
Hana: Josei + noitaminA = Hana will check it out.
Chronolynx: Having read the first of the novels this show is based on, I can say it is very promising indeed. And EO isn’t the only one getting some yaoi vibes from these guys.
Mystlord: NoitaminA means I’m going to watch and finish this. I’m a little bit apprehensive about the story since it’s a novel adaptation, so I’m worried as to what’s going to get cut out/focused on. If it’s only 11 episodes too… It’ll be really tough for the director.
Crusader: I am not qualified to blog this one, so my vote goes to Hana, yours should too.
ghostlightning: I’ll check this out for a few episodes most definitely.

Usagi Drop

Animation Studio: Production I.G. (Moshidora, Sengoku Basara, Break Blade, Eden of the East)
Website: http://www.usagi-drop.tv/
Available Trailers: Trailer 1
Source: Manga adaptation.
Genre: Josei
Air Date: 07/07
Summary: Going home for his grandfather’s funeral, thirty-year-old bachelor Daikichi is floored to discover that the old man had an illegitimate child with a younger lover! The rest of his family is equally shocked and embarrassed by this surprise development, and not one of them wants anything to do with the silent little girl, Rin. In a fit of angry spontaneity, Daikichi decides to take her in himself! But will living with this overgrown teenager of man help Rin come out of her shell? And hang on, won’t this turn of events spell doom for Daikichi’s love life?!
Additional Details: This show is the second NoitaminA show for this season. The seiyuu for Rin is actually a 10 year old girl! The seiyuu for Daikichi is a veteran seiyuu, though he hasn’t had any major roles. The Western community probably knows him best as Packy from Cat Shit One. The supporting seiyuu are also very experienced, with Ueda Kana having voiced Toosaka Rin from Fate/Stay Night and Miyanaga Saki from Saki. Oohara Sayaka has voiced Alicia Florence from ARIA and Beatrice from Umineko. The staff actually has little experience, with the director only having directed the movie Tales of Vesperia: The First Strike and having done the storyboard for the movie Gekijouban Bungaku Shoujo. He has worked on many other series as a key animator though. The series composer’s only previous experience has been working as an assistant producer on the Tales of Earthsea movie by Studio Ghibli.

Writer’s Commentary:

ExecutiveOtaku: I’ve heard great things about the manga, and it is noitaminA, so despite my general dislike of small children both animated and real life, I’ll be giving this at least three episodes to see how it goes.
Hana: What EO (minus the bit about small children, LOL) and Chrono said.
Chronolynx: The manga fans for this one are rather vocal about how great it is, and I have been meaning to check it out at some point. So will definitely watch.
Mystlord: I will be watching this for sure. I love to see great character development, so here’s hoping!
Crusader: I am surprised something that appears to be a genuine attempt to be heart warming and tastefully funny. Three episode test for sure.
ghostlightning: Sounds very interesting, will definitely check out.

Animation Studio: Production I.G. (Moshidora, Sengoku Basara, Break Blade, Eden of the East)
Website: http://www.blood-c.jp/
Available Trailers: Trailer 1
Source: Original series, but based off of the Blood franchise.
Genre: Fantasy
Summary: An original anime collaboration between Production I.G. and CLAMP.
Air Date: 07/07
Additional Details: CLAMP is doing the character designs and the story for this one, so you can rest easy. The direction will be handled by Mizushima Tsutomu of xxxHOLIC and Shinryaku! Ika Musume fame. The series composition and script will be handled by Ookawa Nanase, a member of CLAMP who has worked in some CLAMP adaptations, most notably as the executive producer of xxxHOLIC and having done a large portion of the script for Cardcaptor Sakura and Kobato. The main character will be voiced by Mizuki Nana (If you don’t know her you haven’t watched any anime) and the rest of the seiyuu cast is just as talented, including Fukuen Misato (Miyafuji Yoshika of Strike Witches), Nojima Kenji (Masaki in Eve no Jikan), and Fujiwara Keiji (Sonchou aka The Mayor in Arakawa Under the Bridge).

Writer’s Commentary:
ExecutiveOtaku: CLAMP! The director of xxxHolic! YES YES YES! Definitely watching, looks to be great. Good chance of blogging it if it lives up to the potential shown in the preview and staff list.
Hana: Unfamilar with the source material, but sounds promising. Thus, feedback from other viewers considered, might check it out.
Chronolynx: So, wait, is this more vampires? Did Shiki start a trend or something? No thanks, unless there is some very positive feedback.
Mystlord: I never got into Blood+, so I don’t know if I’ll get into or understand this. I’ll give it a shot though.
Crusader: It’s been so long since i had seen anything from CLAMP might as well during the Dog Days of Summer.
ghostlightning: Will check out if other viewers provide positive feedback, but otherwise I am disinterested.

Animation Studio: A-1 Pictures (Ao no Exorcist, AnoHana, Fractale, Anime no Chikara)
Website: http://www.idolmaster-anime.jp/
Available Trailers: Trailer 1, Trailer 2
Source: Game adaptation.
Genre: ??? I’m guessing slice of life.
Air Date: 07/07
Summary: An adaptation of the game series by Bandai.
Additional Details: This game is BIG in Japan. It’s over it’s peak now, but it was like Love Plus in a way. The director, Nishigori Atsushi, is actually an extremely well known and respected animator in the industry, having won an award for his character designs for Tenga Toppa Gurren Lagann. He also did the designs for Panty and Stocking and did the key animation for Toradora!. He also was a storyboarder, assistant animation director, and key animator for the Evangelion 2.0 movie. So basically he’s absolutely amazing. The series composer, Takao Touko, is an animator and storyboarder for Kyoto Animation, and has worked on more or less all of their productions. All the seiyuu are retained from the 2008 OVA. The only big name seiyuu involved is Kugimiya Rie, but most of the seiyuus working on the project all have prior experience, both in voice acting and in singing.

Writer’s Commentary:
ExecutiveOtaku: Despite the impressive staff working on this one, I still have a hard time thinking that this will be something that I’d want to watch. I think I remember seeing guys playing this game at the arcades in Tokyo when I was there on study abroad 4 or so years ago, and it just seemed kind of creepy to me. I suppose I’ll give the first episode a shot just based on the staff, but I don’t have a good feeling about this.
Hana: I agree that the staff list sounds impressive. However, I’m pretty sure that this is not my thing, so I’ll pass.
Chronolynx: No.
Mystlord: I’ve always been curious about the IDOLM@STER craze, so count me in. Plus, Nishigori Atsushi is <3, even though he likely won’t get too much creative freedom.
Crusader: I already watched the one with Giant Robots jammed in…
ghostlightning: Will check out if other viewers provide positive feedback, but otherwise I am disinterested.

Mayo Chiki!

Animation Studio: Feel (Fortune Arterial, KissxSis, Yosuga no Sora)
Website: http://www.starchild.co.jp/special/mayochiki/
Available Trailers: Trailer 1
Source: Light novel adaptation.
Genre: Comedy, Romance, Harem
Air Date: 07/07
Summary: Konoe Subaru, 17, has been serving as the butler of Suzutsuki Kanade in school, a classmate of Sakamachi Kinjirou. Due to an accident, Sakamachi discovers Subaru’s secret… that he’s actually a girl!? Apparently she will be removed from her position if anyone at school finds out. What will unfold from this chain of events?
Additional Details: The director has previously directed Hayate no Gotoku! and supervised OreImo. The series composer has worked on a lot of series, ranging from K-On! to Bakuman. The seiyuus are fairly talented, featuring Hino Satoshi (Riken from Otome Youkai Zakuro, Takagi from Bakuman), Iguchi Yuka (Enri from Fractale), and Kitamura Eri (Sayaka from Madoka Magica, Yui from Angel Beats!).

Writer’s Commentary:
ExecutiveOtaku: Hard to say how these rom-com shows will turn out at previews time. Around half end up being fanservice crap, a quarter are decent entertainment if it’s a slow season, and the last quarter end up genuinely good. I think this one might fall towards the middle category, but I’ll give it three episodes to prove itself. Unless it ends up being terrible from the start, in which case I reserve the right to drop it immediately.
Hana: Harem rom-coms just aren’t my thing. Pass.
Chronolynx: No.
Mystlord: If Feel is doing it, then it will obviously suck. Still waiting for them to prove me wrong…
Crusader: Nothing says QWALITY like a girl pissing in your anime.
ghostlightning: Not interested.

Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu Ni!

Animation Studio: Silver Link (The first season of Baka to Test)
Website: http://www.bakatest.com/
Available Trailers Trailer 1
Source: Light Novel Adaptation
Genre: Comedy
Air Date: 07/07
Summary: The second season of Baka to Test.
Additional Details: The staff and cast are the same as in season 1.

Writer’s Commentary:
ExecutiveOtaku: Definitely watching. I loved the first season and I’m sure I’ll love this one too. Unexpectedly great humor from a really generic sounding premise. I can’t wait for more Shouko X Yuuji tazer love!
Hana: What Chrono said.
Chronolynx: Have not seen S1. Not gonna change that.
Mystlord: Bite me.
Crusader: This is EO’s shipping war.
ghostlightning: Not watching sequels of shows I haven’t watched.

Itsuka Tenma no Kuro Usagi

Animation Studio: Zexcs (Onii-chan no Koto, The Legend of the Legendary Heroes, Umi Monogatari)
Website: http://www.itsu-ten.jp/
Available Trailers: Trailer 1
Source: Light Novel Adaptation.
Genre: Contemporary fantasy, Romance
Air Date: 07/08
Summary: Taito has been really sleepy lately, and keeps dreaming of a female vampire who says she has given him her “poison.” Sometimes he even thinks he hears her voice when he’s awake. But after surviving an accident that should have killed him, Taito’s world changes drastically and he realizes that his dreams are more real than he thought.
Additional Details: The staff is rather unremarkable. The director was a former key animator doing work dating back to 1983, but he’s recently turned to directing, though all he’s directed are Final Approach, Nanatsuiro Drops, and Jewelpet Tinkle. This will be Morita Shigeru’s first time as a series composer, though he’s written script before for Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka? and Seikon no Qwaser II. The main seiyuu are essentially taken from Jewelpet Tinkle, with Tachibana Shinnosuke having voiced Jinnai Yuuma and Takamoto Megumi having voiced Alma. Most people though will likely know Takamoto Megumi from her role as Winry Rockbell from FMA:Brotherhood.

Writer’s Commentary:
ExecutiveOtaku: Mahou shoujo vampires? I’m thinking that I probably will end up dropping this pretty quickly. It reminds me of Kore wa Zombie Desu ka and Yumekui Merry, both of which I stalled on and dropped around the halfway point.
Hana: Not my thing either. Next.
Chronolynx: MORE Vampires? And why does that one girl on image look like Madoka? No.
Mystlord: If Zexcs is doing it, then it will be average/below average. Still waiting for them to prove me wrong.
Crusader: How many vampire shows are there now?
ghostlightning: Not interested.

Animation Studio: AIC (Amagami SS, Hourou Musuko)
Website: http://kadokawa-anime.jp/R-15/
Available Trailers: None
Source: Light Novel Adaptation.
Genre: Comedy, Romance, School, Slice of Life.
Air Date: 07/09
Summary: Akutagawa Takuto is a teenage porn novel writer. He enters Hirameki Gakuen, which accepts only geniuses with outstanding talent. He leads his classmates with his porn skills to win the interclass competition.
Additional Details: The director has previously done Fortune Arterial, KissXSis, and the second season of Da Capo. The series composer has done Angel Heart and Kannazuki no Miko. The seiyuu… are more or less all novices who come from the Production Ace agency. Also of interest, Production Ace is a subsidiary of Kadokawa Shouten, which publishes the light novels. HMMMMMM…

Writer’s Commentary:
ExecutiveOtaku: No.
Hana: I’m guessing it does exactly what it says on the tin.
Chronolynx: Eh, why not.
Mystlord: I’ll probably try a few episodes just because it’s called R-15.
Crusader: It would be a sad state of affairs if the best literary works were only coming from pr0n.
ghostlightning: Not interested

Nekogami Yaoyorozu

Animation Studio: AIC Plus+ (Asobi ni Iku yo!, GA: Geijutsuka Art Design Class)
Website: http://www.mmv.co.jp/special/nekogami/
Available Trailers: Trailer 1, Trailer 2, Trailer 3 (the trailers are all pretty much the same though)
Source: Manga adaptation.
Genre: Seinen, Comedy
Air Date: 07/09
Summary: Koyama Yuzu is running an antique shop. Mayu, a cat god (nekogami), is living off Yuzu and leads an idle life playing games. Lots of other gods visit Mayu and enjoy merrymaking.
Additional Details: The director is very experienced, having directed Kaichou wa Maid-sama, Les Miserables: Shoujo Cosette, and GA: Geijutsuka Art Design Class, and having worked on numerous other series as a storyboarder and episode director. The series composer has worked on Lucky Star, Ookami Kakushi, and Sengoku Otome: Momoiro Paradox. The seiyuu look very solid. The main characters are voiced by Horie Yui (Minori from Toradora!) and Tomatsu Haruka (Sakana-chan from Star Driver, Msyu from C). Other prominent seiyuu in the cast include Tanaka Rie (Maria from Hayate no Gotoku!, Lacus Clyne from Gundam Seed) and Mizuhashi Kaori (Tomoe Mami from Madoka Magica, Miyako from Hidamari Sketch).

Writer’s Commentary:
ExecutiveOtaku: Seems like it could be funny and definitely cute. Will give it a shot.
Hana: No idea what that was all about. Thus, based on the cutesy character designs, I’ll pass.
Chronolynx: Probably not.
Mystlord: Ummm… Doubtful.
Crusader: I will watch if EO declares this funny or if the Great Nekogami-sama keeps the Florida Marlins losing streak going.
ghostlightning: Will check out if other viewers provide positive feedback, but otherwise I am disinterested.

Possible bloggers:

Dantalian no Shoka

Animation Studio: GAINAX (Evangelion, Panty and Stocking, Tenga Toppa Gurren Lagann)
Website: http://dantalian.tv/
Available Trailers: Trailer 1
Source: Light Novel Adaptation
Genre: Fantasy
Air Date: 07/15
Summary: Hugh Anthony Disward inherits an old mansion and a personal library from his grandfather. In the basement of the mansion, he meets a mysterious girl, Dalian. She is a Dantalian and a gateway to “Dantalian’s bookshelf”, which stores the prohibited books of the demons.
“Gensho (Illusory Books)”, the prohibited books, endanger the balance of the world, but people are fascinated by the taboo. Hugh and Dalian solve the cases involving Gensho with their ability to access the Dantalian bookshelf.
Additional Details: Interestingly, both the director and series composer have little experience. On the other hand, the seiyuu are fantastic, featuring Sawashiro Miyuki (Kanbaru Suruga from Bakemonogatari, Shinku from Rozen Maiden) and Ono Daisuke (Satou Jun from Working!!, Koizumi Itsuki from Haruhi).

Writer’s Commentary:
ExecutiveOtaku: I’m not so keen on the Gosick vibe I’m getting from Dalian in this, but it sounds like it could have some potential. It’s unusual to see Gainax doing a series like this too. I guess they’re going to milk the light novel adaptation thing too. Certainly a way to make lots of money and then use it to make the series that they’d probably rather be making. Will try the first episode to see what it’s about. (And speaking of studios that I like, can it be that SHAFT is actually not doing a show this season? Impossible!)
Hana: A mystery show with nice character designs and Daisuke Ono? It gets the first epi test from me. (Yakumo never happened lalala…)
Chronolynx: It’s Gainax. Why not?
Mystlord: I’m very, very wary about something like this, since I feel that this can enter “average” territory very, very easily. I’ll give it a try though.
Crusader: Some one needs to get a Kindle.
ghostlightning: Will check out if other viewers provide positive feedback, but otherwise I am disinterested. Oh LOL I’ll watch it because it’s GAINAX.

Manyuu Hikenchou

Animation Studio: Hoods Entertainment (Seikon no Qwaser)
Website: http://oppaidaisuki.jp/
Available Trailers: Trailer 1
Source: Manga adaptation.
Genre: Ecchi, BIG BREASTS.
Air Date: 07/10
Summary: It is currently the Taiheimeji Era. It is a reign ruled by the Tokugawa shogunate. Inside this shogunate, there is a group of warriors that support the government. They are the Manyuu Clan.
In this current era, breasts mean everything. If you have breasts, you are guaranteed wealth and popularity. If you lack them, you are rarely considered “human”. Members of the Manyuu Clan help raise the future big breasts. Written on a secret scroll possessed by the clan, there is said to be various techniques on how to grow big and beautiful breasts.
Chifusa is to be successor of the clan. However, she takes the secret scroll and runs away with it, hoping to fight against the cruel world that the Manyuu Clan has created…
Additional Details: The director has previously done Seikon no Qwaser. The surprising part though is that the series composer hasn’t done ecchi shows previously. Instead, he’s worked on Railgun, Occult Gakuin, and Birdy the Mighty: Decodde (2). The seiyuu are also well acquainted with the genre, with every single one having had some main character role in an ecchi show, including Seikon no Qwaser, Freezing, Asobi no Iku yo!, and others.

Writer’s Commentary:
ExecutiveOtaku: No. Dear Madoka, no.
Hana: Hahahahahahaha…ahahahahahah.
Chronolynx: This will be the best show of the season. Everyone who watches it will be awed.
Mystlord: This will be a deep commentary about how breast obsession is really a fallacy in our society. Not only that, but in the end, the protagonist’s views will show everyone the error of their ways, and a magic spell will be cast, thus making them all small chested. Then a society will be created where small breasts mean everything, and big breasts are not even considred “human”. This would be the best show of the season, if not for Nyanpire. It’s a shame that it had to air in the same season. Oh well.
Crusader: Would be EPIC if they had the gall to advertise for breast implants while this airs.
ghostlightning: Not interested.

Mawaru Penguin Drum

Animation Studio: Brains Base (Durarara, Kuragehime, Nastume Youjin Chou)
Website: http://penguindrum.jp/
Available Trailers: Trailer 1, Trailer 2, Trailer 3, Trailer 4, Trailer 5
Source: Original work?
Genre: Slice of Life
Air Date: Sometime in July.
Summary: New project from the director of Revolutionary Girl Utena, Kunihiko Ikuhara. The story will center around the lives of three siblings: Kanba, Shouma, and Himari Takakura, with Himari as the female main character.
Additional Details: As stated above, the director is of RGU fame, and he’s writing the script with Ikeda Mamiko, who has had a lot of prior experience, having written the script for Kobato, Genshiken, and Eikoku Koi Monogatari. The seiyuu don’t have too much experience, but one of them has voiced a character in Doraemon (for every single one of its seasons) and another, Kimura Ryouhei, voiced Hinata from Angel Beats!

Writer’s Commentary:
ExecutiveOtaku: After watching those five trailers I still have no idea what it’s supposed to be about. I’m guessing that trailer 5 is the most accurate since it shows an actual scene from the show. Will check out the first episode just out of curiosity.
Hana: No idea what it’s about either, but I’ve had only good experiences with ‘Random’ anime – it gets the first epi test from me.
Chronolynx: Premise seems delightfully random. Yes.
Mystlord: I am so pumped for this. I think. Well at the very least I’m watching the first few episodes.
Crusader: Someone mentioned Revolutionary Girl Utena?
ghostlightning: Wut. Will definitely check out.

Possible bloggers:

Animation Studio: project No.9 and studio Blanc (project No.9 has helped animate Softenni for 3 episodes)
Website: http://www.ro-kyu-bu.com/
Available Trailers: Trailer 1
Source: Light Novel Adaptation
Genre: Comedy, Sports
Air Date: 07/01
Summary: Hasegawa Subaru enters a basketball club of Nanashiba High School, but the activity of the club gets suspended because the club leader falls in love with an 11 year old daughter of the coaching teacher. Subaru’s aunt asks him to coach a basketball club of elementary school girls. At first, he is reluctant to teach small girls, but he soon devotes himself to the club as he learns of their complex circumstances.
Additional Details: For all you Hanazawa Kana fans, go crazy because she has the lead female in this one. Kaji Yuuki (Ganryuu from Otome Youkai Zakuro, Walker from Durarara!!) voices the male lead, and for supporting characters, we have: Noto Mamiko(Ichinose Kotomi from Clannad), Hidaka Rina (Last Order from Index, Mizuno from Star Driver), Hikasa Youko (Minami from Moshidora, Houki from IS, Izumi from Working!!), Itou Kanae (Elucia from The World God Only Knows, Ohana from Hanasaku Iroha), Itou Shizuka (Haruka from Amagami SS, Ookami from Ookami-san), and others. In terms of staff, Kusakawa Keizou (Director of Nanoha As and StrikerS, as well as Dog Days and Sekirei) is directing and Itou Michiko (series composer for Ookami-san) is doing the series composition.

Writer’s Commentary:
ExecutiveOtaku: Looks like lots of stupid loli fanservice. Definitely not watching.
Hana: What EO said.
Chronolynx: What EO said.
Mystlord: I see breasts. Clearly not loli. Clearly not interested. No, this doesn’t conflict with what I said about Manyuu Hikenchou :3.
Crusader: The mere presence of a maid scene indicates to me this is less about Xs and Os of the proper variety… However that being said the megane loli has ersatz-Wiley X eye protection making her gender bent Loli-Amare Stoudemire in which case this team might be the loli-Knicks and play no defense, would be EPIC if is Spike Lee were in the stands when this airs. Still best case scenario this will be awesomely bad enough to make NBA jokes during the lockout, though I get the feeling this will have minimal basketball and will probably look more like Harlem Globetrotter lolis vs. Washington Generals. Final verdict will depend upon the tallest loli being the center/power forward, then I can make Shaq jokes about her not being in shape and clogging up the lane.
ghostlightning: Fucking up basketball like Softeni fucked up tennis. Fuck this shit.

started watching this series as a whole and I am <em>loving</em> it. Thus, unless I suddenly hate how the remainder of what I’ve yet to see of season two turns out, then I’ll defo watch, and possibly (co-)blog, this.

Looks like another season where I will watch…nothing. Nothing has been good since last fall. I watched nothing during winter and spring except KnT. I may yet however wind up watching Gosick and Tiger and Bunny. May.

God damn Japan and their QUALITY, otaku pandering shows. If they aren’t otaku pandering then they’re usually just QUALITY, recently.

That said however, I may wind up watching Blood+2, Electric Boogaloo depending on of if I get around to watching the 50 episodes of the first season. So not all is lost.

  6. Posted June 24, 2011 at 10:35 pm | Permalink

I am looking forward to Sacred Seven! Yeah I will try just because I thought I would hate Tiger and Bunny but actually liked it a lot. Other than that show I will probably watch a bit of everything, excited to see No. 6 as well xD

Nice preview guys! Looking forward to seeing who covers what for Summer.

    This is epic win statement.

I’ll try the two noitaminA shows and the Gainax and Sunrise ones. I have so little interest in anything in summer 2011 that I’ve ended up picking shows based on animation company/noitamina.

Shows like Yuru Yuri and Seikon no Qwaser 3 make me lose faith in anime. At least Nichijou will still be running through Summer 2011.

Gah, looks like another weak season for those of us that follow the path of Mecha :(

  11. Posted June 25, 2011 at 8:40 am | Permalink

The cast of Idolm@ster is not in fact completely retained, of course: Azami Asakura steps in for Yurika Ochiai (Yurina Hase). I’m surprised you did not notice, considering that Mrs. Ochiai’s retirement was a high profile story, being caused by death threats. I’m pretty sure Mrs. Asakura is an alias; alas, it’s not Mrs. Ochiai’s alias. The voices are suspiciously similar though, I certainly cannot tell them apart.

  12. Posted June 25, 2011 at 9:29 am | Permalink

Based on this season, I predict next Summer will feature at least three shows in which the main character inherits a library of antique porn and a six year old girl from his grandfather. Suddenly he is transported to a land that mimics ancient Chinese/Japanese military history, only it is populated by large breasted women, whose clothes have a surprising tendency to slip off, tear, explode, and dissolve. He will then discover that the six year old girl is the re-incarnation of a cat god, and together they must fight against an army of vampires.

  13. Posted June 26, 2011 at 1:38 am | Permalink

Lots of cutesy shows. Let’s how that 90% of them go “Oh, crap” by the end of the first two episodes.

Well CLAMP is back, so really looking forward to that. Otherwise, there really isn’t anything that stands out much, is there? Well, other than MANYUU HIK- err….yeah no. Seeing if No. 6 is going to do well, it’s kind of giving the “Fractale done right” kind of feel…

Gosick: constantly fights against magic, has mythos rooted in reality and deduction

      Aw man, that was priceless.

Anyways, yeah, this season seems to be like 90% moe garbage, but at least there’re shows like Usagi Drop, Kamisama Dolls (which better not be garbage), and BLADE YEAH BLADE YEAH no

  18. Posted June 30, 2011 at 2:02 pm | Permalink

Sacred Seven, Blood C, and Usagi Drop are the ones that I’m most looking forward to this season. For any who haven’t checked out the Usagi Drop manga, read at least a few chapters before you decide to drop into this show if you can. It’s pretty hard to screw up such a simple premise, especially when the groundwork’s been laid.
Sacred Seven and Blood C… yeah, I know next to nothing about them, not anymore than anyone else anyway, but they look fairly interesting if not all that original.

Will also check out Mawaru Penguin Drum just to know what the hell it’s about.
