Ao No Exorcist 16: It’s Judgement Day, people!

Well said, Mephisto Pheles, well said.

Before you guys come clobbering me for not posting my review of No. 6, school’s just started and I can only spare my free times on weekends. Expect an update on episode 4 and 5 this Saturday. But not the Ao No Exorcist reviews though. This week; Rin faces Judgement Day, whether he lives or…dies. The Kyoto Boys (minus Konekomaru), Shiemi and Izumo are out to a mini field trip in Kyoto to get the Kurikara fixed. The new Paladin (taking over Father Fujimoto, grrrr…) visiting Japan does not make things easier for everyone.

It’s a bird, it’s a plane…no, it’s…

Summary: Rin managed to calm down after Shiemi gave him a cooldown hug. Seeing what all the commotion is all about, newly appointed Paladin (a.k.a. Father Fujimoto’s substitute) Arthur Auguste Angel visits True Cross Academy and arrests Rin for being the son of Satan, taking Mephisto and Shura to court as suspect and witness respectively. As Yukio tells his students of Rin’s demon heritage and the broken Kurikara (which apparently belongs to Bon’s family in the past) they (except Takara and Konekomaru, who still have broken bones to heal) decided to go to Kyoto and find Yoshikuni XI to get it fixed by going through a portal we better not know about for now. As Mephisto is cornered with questions from all four corners on trial, Yukio and Bon face their inner demons but thanks to the help of the others the quest of asking for mystical nails proceed smoothly.

Finally Amaimon popped in the middle of the trail after he heard from his demon minions that he was not invited to the party. Oops.

…a.k.a. da Big Prick of the Vatican Order who gets his uniform custom-made.

Rin, in Demon Berserk Mode breaks Mephisto’s cuckoo clock, releasing Amaimon from entrapment. Preventing Rin from losing his remaining humanity, Shiemi gives him a hug, helping him in stopping Rin’s demon side from controlling him completely. Recently appointed Paladin, Arthur Auguste Angel shows up to arrest Rin, as well as taking Shura and Mephisto away for trial in the Vatican. On the other side, Yukio tells the class of Rin’s true identity and explains a bit of the Kurikara, which Bon has a knowledge of as the sword originally belongs to Bon’s family, which has been keeping it for generations until it landed in the hands of Rin Okumura. Or to be precise, Father Shirou Fujimoto.

Not surprised if you come back with demon-positive blood in you health check-up report one day…

On trial, an unconscious Rin is trapped in a crystal as the trial began. Reveal a part of his plans to the higher-ups, Mephisto intend to use Rin as a weapon to defeat Satan (but judging by Mephisto’s facial expression, you know that 1. He’s lying, 2. He has something dirty under his sleeves or 3. intends to use Rin for his own plans, using the Order and Satan’s forces to add to his personal agendas.) The higher-ups had a hard time whether they could trust him, seemingly Mephisto has been helping the Order for 200 years now. While on trial, Yukio and the others (save Konekomaru and Takara) go to Kyoto via a special portal (or something), meet Yoshikuni XI (who takes a liking of Bon) and tells them to find special nails to fix Kurikara, which is a difficult sword to repair because of its affiliation with demon slayings.

Rin took the sword. That means he’s an enemy. Yukio, you’re his brother. I’m going to hate you too. What’s that? Father Fujimoto took that sword from my father? That’s it, I’m SSOOOO gonna hate your family with the intensity of a million litres of chlorine once Rin gets out of trial.

Of course, things do not go as they planned. Yukio and Bon are faced with their inner demons via Buddha statues possessed by demons tempting them to hate Rin. With a streak of good luck, the girls and Shima respectively saved them before they get to accept the so-called ‘truths’ told. They got the nails and Yoshikuni managed to fix the Kurikara once they returned. Back to the trial, Amaimon crashes into the trial, causing everyone to panic and also preparing the soon-conscious Rin away from dreamland.

Son of Satan VS Satan. Now that’s something you don’t get to see everyday in your lifetimes.

Earning the trust of a holy order known to all…takes me 200 years to get through the audition stages. Now another 500 years to get by preliminaries and quarter finals. Let’s not talk about the finals, shall we? ;_;

‘all me Yoshikuni XI. ‘ice to meet ‘yar ar. Dun mind e’ ac’nt.

Bickering like an old couple. They are in love, full stop.

After all, I’m a man demon with wealth and taste.

Thoughts: From the look of things, looks like 70% of it is anime-original.

Yes, Angel’s sword Excalibur is on its way to become Excalibur Jr. of Excalibur (Sr.) from Soul Eater. And crap, the anime decided to remove the part where Angel breaks Rin’s leg using Excalibur (and all other interactions with him thereof, leading to some funny moments in a grim situation). That part is very important (so that we can hate that Angel guy more than ever. Why??? WHY????? Let me go cry and rage in a corner. ;_;) Also, I was very much expecting the Kyoto Boys and Shiemi to stay away from Rin after Yukio revealed everything, since this is important for everyone’s character development. Especially Bon, being hard-headed till now, and let’s not forget his daddy issues… But I can’t say for sure when the next episode airs as it tracks back to manga material.

We get to find out more about Rin and Yukio’s mother, Yurie Gin, Lower Second Class Exorcist but that’s all we’re given. Somehow she was tricked and got raped by Satan in Gehanna (Satan cannot reach Assiah unless he possess a body, which unfortunately won’t last very long for him) and is intentionally doing that just to piss the Order off. I’m going towards the former, unless the series takes a cynical turn in later chapters, which I hope will not happen, ever. I have a hard time understanding what Yoshikuni XI was trying to say (Kyoto accent?) and looking through the manga she’s an anime-original character. She’ll probably appear in the manga sooner or later and I doubt we’ll see the last of her in the anime though. About Takara; I have no idea when he’s going to reveal his true identity like Shura did, or show off his real powers. I can’t believe he can carry the lit lantern back on his own without the mangaka or anime producers explain how he did it.

Join the Dark Side, Yukio Okumura, join the Dark Side. We have mole erasers.

Alas… IT’S TIME for a bigger sword! Bigger, wider, faster, stronger!

Next week: Rin learns how to control his flames. Yukio and Shura decides to hit balls. No, you dirty readers, it’s not what you think it is!

Isn’t Yoshikuni XI Bon’s childhood friend?

Also, Angel is a dick. No contest.

I understand changing things from manga to anime, doesn’t mean I always agree.
And it definitely seems like they shorted a lot of character development for the gang here, which makes me sad.
Going to wait to see how it plays out before I pass judgement though.

I agree. The Kyoto Boys (especially Bon) and Shiemi are extremely mad at Rin in the manga, but it’s a pity the writer of the adaptation chooses to leave that part out. This is very important for more character development for Bon following to the next arc. Also, Bon’s personality is out of place in this episode. He couldn’t be the type that forgives anyone related to Satan easily.

Regarding Rin and Yukio’s mother, I believe it was said that it was during the Blue Night 16 years ago, when Satan possessed and killed numerous exorcists. Satan used one of the exorcists he possessed to impregnate Yurie Gin. Hopefully in future chapters we’ll find out more about her and the events of the Blue Night.

I was surprised by how willingly the classmates accepted the fact that Rin was a demon. It just seems really unreal – He’s related to Satan – Come on!

I expected something along the lines of a few of the characters refusing to help until a much later time. That would probably take too much time though, and time isn’t something that Ao no Exorcist necessarily has at this point.

I knew they’d have to change the last arc somehow, but I wish they had at least taken more than half an episode to accept Rin -_-

What really pissed me off (to the point I stopped lurking to write this comment) was Rin getting saved by the Power of True Love™; it’s one of the most ridiculous cliches ever and they HAD to put it *rages*.

I share the same rage. Completely went WTF when I saw it. Seen it enough in Inuyasha, now I have to face the same troll again
