Chihayafuru – 09: The Best Night of Kana-chan

Read it and weep Old Bag, Chihaya found four more so FUCKING EAT IT BITCH.

A life of sitting on your ass and fearing a loss will make you soft, but rejoice Pork-bun, Taichi, and Desk-kun for Chihaya is about to put you through Hell Week! After all Pain is just weakness leaving the body and all of you have plenty of weakness left to bleed out of your systems. Taichi may be keeping Chihaya out of his room, but Kana-chan got a special invite into Chihaya’s. Also Happy Birthday to Chihaya on this week 16 years ago you popped out into the world and made it more awesome, standing up for the ignored and ruining Taichi’s life with heart ache and your glorious ignorance of Taichi’s lust.

No more introductions, means that training camp can finally start along with Club paperwork. Sadly while every person with half a brain knows that Chihaya is the driving force and the heart and soul of the Karuta club the old empress says, “NO”. It was to be expected though since the old hag and I do mean OLD hag is a jealous bitch and envies Chihaya and sought to put a no good weak puppet in her place, the docile Taichi who will not challenge her despotic ways, but no matter for while Taichi is weak Chihaya is strong and determined to the point she will overrule him on the spot in all important matters. As a matter of fact I think the training camp was a great idea for all of you pathetic cowards who think training hard and practice is unnecessary you simply don’t matter and ought to consider jumping off a bridge so that you might stop stealing air. Every one knows you only get what you put in and from the look of things all of them except Pork-bun could use improvements in stamina, mental acuity, and skill when it comes to Karuta. If the Goal is a National Championship then all the more reason to put in the effort.

Yeah sure there is always that lame Taichi argument about talent, bullshit Will Beats skill every time and that is why the Miami Heat aren’t 10 time NBA Champions during the LeBron, Wade, and Bosh Era. Practice should be the order of the day and I applaud Chihaya for running a hard camp to push all of her charges to their physical limits. Because once they realize that they can go the distance they will no longer fear it as they once did. Shame on Taichi for pleading for wanting low expectations and while he might be the Empress’ puppet President Chihaya is the one who is running the club. They should all be thankful that Chihaya wasn’t apt to punch them for failing as Jordan was allegedly doing during his Three-peats in Chicago. While Taichi was the first to complain I am glad the rest of them realized how beneficial practicing hard was. There have been enough instances of where they all had wasted their potential but now they all realize that hey while Chihaya found them as wanting weaklings they are now tough players who are as enduring as the mountains.

Taichi overstepping his authority was not the only dumb thing he did this week, no he is too stupid to limit the number of bad decisions. While it was nice of him to put up his home for the training camp it is sad that after all this time after all those years with Chihaya his mother has not been made aware of how much he values Chihaya. So that leaves Taichi’s girlfriend and now the prospective mother-in-law in the dark, I guess there is honesty and then there is Taichi honesty. Seriuously though Taichi wants to be with Chihaya someday right so why not let mom know about her and start building that bridge, unless of course Taichi wants to relegate Chihaya to mistress and that would be beyond insulting. Still where Tiachi failed to hold his ground against his mother, Kana-chan capitalized immensely in the Chihaya sweepstakes.

It was great of Chihaya to try and make Kana-chan a special player and another heir to Arata school of karuta. After all how would Kana-chan get better if Chihaya was rolling over for her? Better that Kana-chan learn the hard way and certainly it seems that Kana-chan is by fart the most astute beginner and the better of Desk-kun. Moreover the hard way breeds toughness and I get the sense that because Chihaya has decided to make Kana-chan her apprentice that they are now very close. I was so happy, I was grinning ear to ear when Chihaya whisked Kana-chan away and carried Kana-chan all the way to her room. It was a night of Chihaya and Kana that should have gone forever and ever but there was a Sweet 16 to celebrate so hopefully sometime in the future. Still I am glad that Kana-chan was able to be introduced to Chihaya’s family, know that Kana-chan was able to spend a night there I hope Kana-chan will ask to be invited more often. Still I do hope that Kana-chan had plenty of fun after the boys had to go back to Taichi’s mom. Kana-chan is making good progress though Arata basically wins this episode once again. Because while Taichi might try and get physically close, Chihaya just forgets it at the mere mention or Arata or in this case a text message sent through Taichi. How delicious that was and it tasted better than whipped cream I bet. Still Credit must be given to Taichi who actually did an honest thing for once, hiding Chihaya from his mom and girlfriend were inexcusable but at least he gave Chihaya the message that made her Sweet 16 all the sweeter.

Hana’s thoughts: on Dem Hands

Well, that was a whole load of cute. Not only do the Scooby Gang get their club officially recognised and start working towards a local Karuta tourney thingy, but we also get to see Kana-chan in ZOMG-I’m-finally-playing-some-Karuta-and-looking-seriously-adorable-mode, Taichi in quietly-suffering-for-the-greater-good-while-in-shirtless-bishie-mode, ‘Desko-kun’ and Nishida in let’s-see-whose-nickname-sounds-more-annoying-mode, Chihaya in I’m-so-awesome-at-rallying-the-troops-that-I-forgot-it’s-my-own-birthday-mode, and Arata in I-can-still-render-people-speechless-at-the-mere-thought-of-my-name-even-though-I’m-bloody-miles-away-mode. And speaking of a certain absent angsty megané bishie, his poor rich-boy tormented rival doesn’t seem to have a hope in hell with Chihaya, does he? I mean, even though he’s had her alone in his house with him, one text from Arata and the best that Taichi can manage is an indirect kiss with her spoon. Well, at least he got to eat the best bit of that birthday cake. Or, rather, tart(?).

Thwarted kisses and desserts aside, I also enjoyed the hands/ hand-holding imagery in this episode. From Desko-kun’s daw-I-got-a-dead-card moment, to Kana-chan’s DAAWWW-I-got-my-favourite-card! moment, to Kana-chan’s other I’m-dragging-Chihaya-away-in-the-middle-of-the-night-by-sheer-brute-force-even-though-I’m-only-half-her-size moment, to both of Taichi’s hand-hold-and-draw-unnecessarily-but-deliciously-close moments, these were fun and important in their own ways. Of course, the main difference between them is that Kana-chan and Desko-kun could have ‘kept’ their cards, whereas Taichi always has to let go of Chihaya’s hand. But why? Is he simply being a gentleman and respecting the fact that Chihaya only sees him in a platonic and professional capacity and only has eyes for Arata? Or is he just being a coward in his refusal to make a move on the Arata-adoring Chihaya? Thankfully, it’s not that simple, and he seems to fall somewhere in the middle. For example, Taichi could’ve deleted that text and kissed the girl. Hell, he could’ve followed her up to his room earlier and had his less gentlemanly way with her. Hm, perhaps he didn’t want her to see the shrine his has dedicated to her in there. Moving on. Like most of you, no doubt, I welcome this new direction in which the show is heading and look forward to more. And, yes, more Arata, please!

Taichi might be President but Chihaya will launch a coup against he usurper.

Great selection for treasurer, Desk-kun would have spent it on a pyramid scheme and Pork-bun would have eaten it all.

Good to see that Pork-bun thinks that Desk-kun is annoying.

Chihaya welcomes you all to the HOUR OF POWER.

About time, and congratulations Kana-chan you are Chihaya's Padawan.

And tomorrow were going to do it AGAIN.

You're both "OH SHIT" now but before long you will be "CAN'T WAIT"

Not ready for karuta are you Desk-kun.

I see Kana-chan is making great strides, maybe next time she will win through a blowout.

Always coasting on talent but as you get older hard work will matter.

Good to see that Chihaya is able to tell the truth about how Taichi's mom might be pretty, but little else.

Glad to see that Kana-chan is getting faster.

Don't worry about the pain it builds character.

Chihaya I really hope you don't end up with these two as in-laws, they aren't worthy of you.

Indeed Chihaya, Taichi's mother and sister are most annoying and spoiled.

If only Chihaya was willing to share her bed.

Chihaya should have been more excited it's been a while since her last sleep over.

Weary is the head that wears the crown.

It is midnight tea party time.

I like how Kana-chan is taking initiative.

Worry not Chihaya even if no one else recognizes your greatness Kana-chan will always believe in you.

Good to see Pork-bun didn't eat the whole thing.

As if Arata would forget this day.

Worry not Chihaya Arata will see you again, and it was the best birthday ever because Kana-chan was there.

Re: Arata vs. Taichi, it is an interesting battle, because Arata holds the advantage of mystique, while Taichi has the advantage of physical proximity. Unfortunately for Taichi, he is a bit too much of a coward to directly confront Chihaya, thus he is having a difficult time taking advantage of his proximity advantage. Regardless, I’m enjoying seeing him squirm under the circumstances. I do think he rose above his natural timidity, both in showing Chihaya the text and snatching the indirect kiss.

Indeed and all the while Miss Girlfriend has no idea that this is all happening… maybe that is why Taichi needed to hide Chihaya as his mom would have ratted him out.

I have a feeling that there’s no girlfriend anymore or else we’ll be seeing her cling to Taichi’s arm everywhere. Imagine a girl coming to the station just so Taichi can see her in her new uniform? How stupid can you get? I haven’t seen the girlfriend even mentioned in the RAWs I’ve skimmed through.

        • Posted December 6, 2011 at 8:53 am | Permalink

Yeah, I agree, she was history as soon as Taichi found out Chihaya was at his new school; she probably got dumped on the train platform just after Chihaya left. Can’t you just see it? “Takkun, who is that girl?” “More importantly, don’t ever call me again.”

A possible scenario yes, but I want proof. You know something that would be comparable with Wings of Goodbye something FINAL.

            @ Bob
I am glad you enjoy seeing a girl’s heart get destroyed because Taichi was too big a coward to reject her like he should have at the beginning. But Hey Taichi gets to operate outside acceptable social behavior.

Granted she was likely stupid, still Miss Girlfriend at least deserves a real break up. She wasn’t much of a character but still, you can’t pass a moral judgement on that little snippet alone. Besides I want proof damn it.

I feel like this episode tried to cover too many things at once without really focusing on any of them. For example, the whole insight into Taichis personal life didn’t really offer anything new, aside from once again showing how lame his family is.

It was also good to see that everyone did see the point and rewards of such hard training except for Taichi (surprise, surprise). I think Desk-kun will eventually make up for the fact that he’s falling back a little with some sort of highly-advanced tactical edge. Would also be cool to finally see Arata being a bigger part of the entire plot.

Maybe Desk-kun will respond better to practice, as for the shit state of Taichi’s family I guess we had to be reminded that Taichi has it so bad. I suppose the only saving grace that Taichi has is that his family downs’t give him enough love despite showering him with money.

After reading this post, it really made me think why Taichi is not introducing Chihaya to his mum. Either he’s really coward just like what Arata told him or he doesn’t want to say something that isn’t 100% sure if it’s going to bear something (since he can sense that Chihaya likes Arata more).

However, regardless of how coward Taichi is, I like how he didn’t steal a kiss from Chihaya. But since I’m rooting for him over the emo megane bishie, I feel bad to see how insecure he is, which shouldn’t be the case since he has more moments with Chihaya to win her… That indirect kiss is a sign that he already lost the war.

That or his mom is under the impression that Taichi already has a girlfriend… and having Chihaya around would be “inconvenient”.

Taichi is insecure because he chooses to be insecure, quite why he gets a pass for making bad decisions and failing to act and accept consequences is beyond me. Apparently accountability and responsibility aren’t valued anymore only victim-hood. As for Arata at least he isn’t a prisoner of his won attitude he actually tried to move on on his own and still has to deal with being poor and working while Taichi has all the leisure time he wants because he was born rich.

Lack of character development of this Arata character has me still hating him for the card kicking incident. unless they show him to have some sort of likable personality i will root for Taichi.

So basically being hard working and responsible mean absolutely nothing these days, it’s attitudes like this that make the world so fucked up. Arata makes one mistake he gets killed. Taichi repeatedly does stupid things but because he is so pitiable that he gets a pass. Fucking ridiculous.

I never said being hard working and responsible mean nothing… being playmates in elementary school does not qualify them to be lovers, there has not been any him and her execpt for a text here, and him kicking her stuff. In the future if he becomes a main character and they flesh out him to have a good character i will like him but. Just because he is hard working does not mean he cant be a complete asshole. Granted if both well applying to work for me i would hire Arata over Taichi because of his work ethic, but that doesnt make him a great person is what im trying to say.

So basically one misstep and Arata is an asshole, while Taichi goes about cheating on his girlfriend, sabotaging Chihaya, tried his best to not recruit any one, and he is not an asshole? Really you are ridiculous. Arata did apologize Chihaya heard it even if we did not, while Taichi has not apologized once for anything he has done and he’s done plenty of bad things since he was a kid. Fucking ridiculous man.

We all make mistakes but by your flawed reasoning we are all assholes, except Taichi and his ilk. So the more fucked up shit we do the less of an asshole that person is? Really? Because that is what you are saying right now.

Your reasoning defies explanation, but essentially that is what you are saying whether you know it or not. You crucify Arata based on one action and yet when Taichi fucks up you excuse him. To you Arata is an asshole based on one action, yet when Taichi does similarly fucked up things it is excusable simply because they were less dramatic but just as if not more malicious. Your reasoning is different but it seems to me it stems less from different lines of reason than blindness to the wrongs Taichi has done, in essence you are using double standards and favoring one based on pity.

what im saying is as of right now i dont know enough about him to like his character if later in the series after him getting much more screen time he proves to be a likable character thats fine but that has not happened yet. and where have i mentioned that i am excusing bad behavior on Taichi part? with Taichi he is simply a more fleshed out character and they have made it obvious that he is in love with her.

    • Posted December 18, 2011 at 2:44 pm | Permalink

(Psst: I’m rooting for Taichi too!)

  5. Posted December 5, 2011 at 6:01 pm | Permalink

Maybe Taichi didn’t introduce Chihaya because his mother knows about her? And doesn’t like her either because she’s on par with Taicihi (more like better) when it comes to karuta. His mother has the whole my-son-has-to-be-number-one attitude after all. either way I’m glad Chihaya didn’t meet the mother. Just look at her. She’s giving off the mean aura everywhere. And Taichi’s bossy sister? Ugh.

I actually like how Taichi is being passive with Chihaya right now. The idea of Taichi making a move at Chihaya just makes me cringe. I can see why Taichi isn’t trying though. Since the beginning, Taichi already has the Arata-is-better-than-me attitude. Taichi tried to win Chihaya over when he was an elementary, but it didn’t work. Instead he got sucked into the world of karuta with Arata and Chihaya. So I guess that makes Taichi a quitter? He did quit karuta once.
I won’t be surprised if Chihaya ends up with Arata though. She’s a little bit surprised when Taichi held her hand and ate her cake. Or if we get a harem ending. Lots of anime are like that now

    • Crusader
      Posted December 6, 2011 at 12:09 pm | Permalink

If Taichi really wanted to get anywhere with Chihaya he’s going to have to at least force his family to be on friendly terms with her unless Taichi just wants Chihaya to be some tart mistress (and she is too good for that). Screw the harem ending its for cowardly writers that can’t make a decision, that or it’s a marketing ploy to sell more content. As for Taichi not making a move he doesn’t have the GUTS and he’s not going to win with his tiny gestures that hardly go noticed by Chihaya. But I agree it makes more sense for Chihaya to marry her karuta hero and not this Taichi fellow who has been unsuccessfully trying to court her on and off and clearly was willing to settle for someone else.

      • Posted December 7, 2011 at 1:04 am | Permalink

Ah, Taichi’s girlfriend. Or ex? I really hate that part of Taichi. Dating another girl while liking Chihaya? It sure gave the impression that Taichi is a jerk. It makes me wonder now, does he actually like Chihaya? Or he’s just caught up in the heat of moment of seeing his childhood crush? If Chihaya didn’t move to his school, I bet he will still be dating his grilfriend. So his feeling is just a temporary feeling?

That’s the million dollar question isn’t it? Did Taichi actually go through a break up and for once in his life be honest about something. I don’t think he loves Chihaya for who she is, she’s just the only girl that he could not get and so that makes her all the more desirable because Chihaya had the sense to day no and tell him how wrong he was for most of his life.

      • Posted December 7, 2011 at 1:08 am | Permalink

As for Taichi not introducing Chihaya, I think I can understand that. I never introduce my guy friends because I’m just scared of my mother. Maybe it’s a cultural thing, maybe it’s not, but I never introduce my males friends unless I have to.
If I remember correctly too, my parents never allow me to stay alone with a guy friend. There’s not a moment where I’m out with guy friends only

And that is rather dishonest, it might be a cultural thing but if we want to live in a society of equals why not tell your folks about all your friends? If they knew what kind of people they were then you parents would not need to worry if you guys did something as a group.

Staying alone with a guy is very different from staying with a mixed group. Hopefully your parents can understand that, lastly if your parents have any high hopes for you they should also appreciate the fact that the more friends you have the more likely you will succeed in life.

I think Chihaya and Kana had to hide from Taichi’s mother (and sister) because it was late and co-ed sleepovers are not allowed in the Mashima household. I get the feeling that Taichi’s mom already knows Chihaya; and as for why he’s not “introducing” Chihaya to his family… what’s there to introduce? Taichi hasn’t secured Chihaya as his girlfriend yet. It might seem like a roundabout way, but if Taichi wants to be with Chihaya someday, he might be doing things RIGHT if what he’s doing is focusing on being the best at Karuta – because that would certainly get Chihaya’s attention (more than text messages, cake stealing, and hand holding).

Taichi should have been honest from the start by the look of things he never told his family that he was having friends over. His mother is aware of Chihaya as the girl who defeated her son and embarrassed him publicly, if Chihaya was such a valued friend why shouldn’t he introduce her as such? I bring friends over to my home from time to time and I made the point to make sure my parents knew about it. As for Karuta, Taichi will never have any game so long as he doesn’t commit to it and put in the time, that also means losing and losing hard from time to time, I just have no faith in Taichi’s ability to take losing in stride, he mopes every time he loses.
