Chihayafuru – 17: Back to School

The most underrated 6th seed in Mizusawa History.

I have the misfortune of informing everyone who reads this post that Hana will not be with us for a while. If you have not heard through her facebook or twitter account her home was burgled and she needs to get a new laptop as well as re-establish her internet connection. Thankfully no one was home at the time of the robbery and while property was lost every one was safe including the newest member of Hana’s family. So feel free to wish her well and congratulate her on becoming an Aunty. In the meantime it falls to me to try and carry on without her.

Chihaya finally gets the hard news that she is relying solely on speed and not improving in all the other areas of karuta. It is as Dr. Haruda said she can take 10 or so easily but it makes no difference if she can’t get the other 90. Kana-chan also rightly points out that because Chihaya is so fast she is taking risks and relying on luck too often to get the card, and when she is wrong it results in a penalty. So in essence Chihaya is playing like the Oakland Raiders, yes she is fast but her plays are simple and she is committing too many penalties that put her in a hole that she doesn’t always get out of. While I had Desk-kun written off as a lost cause I am glad I was wrong as clearly he was dorky enough to go watch Moneyball and start using sabermetrics to patch the holes in his game. I am a baseball guy and I love this new turn of events that adds statistics to determine more specifically where Chihaya’s faults are. Kana-chan may have many fans but only one Chihaya and once again shares her love of poetry with her Lady. Chihaya might have a ways to go before she can really challenge Shinobu but in the meantime Kana-chan should not hesitate to give Chihaya some refinement and learning to love those other poems is only going to help.

When it comes to the rat race to Class A I think Nishida has the edge because he has a greater sense of urgency and now that he caught Taichi using his money to sneak into Class A, Nishida will not be caught unawares. Fortunately for Nishida he has more friends than Taichi and can still draw upon more skilled opponents while Taichi may well have to run himself ragged shuttling between tournaments. Now that he is on the open market I am surprised he isn’t bank rolling more trips with Chihaya, I know he’s too craven to ask her out but he still could try and disguise them as club activities instead of rubbing it in everyone’s face that he is rich. Well whatever happens next I do know this, that Taichi will make less progress this year than Andy W. Hole will romancing a stone. I am excited about the injection of sabermetrics I just hope they use it and Nishida does all he can to get Desk-kun’s notes, even if he has to beat it out of him. Nishida is a better athlete since he’s winning foot races now he is no longer a fat body, but a lineman who can run in a pick 6.

So after being routed by Kana-chan and getting steam rolled last week by Nishida and Desk-kun, Taichi is back for some more disappointment. For all of you who insisted that Taichi had done the right thing by dumping his girlfriend or that she simply fell off the face of the earth, you were horribly mistaken. Long have I told you all that Taichi is coward and that cowardice doesn’t simply go away that bravery happens in the space of a day. This week Taichi gets dumped (because we all know that women do not get dumped, they dump you) and given how he responded he never really loved Ms. Ex-Girlfriend and was simply toying with her. So for the better part of a whole year and then some Taichi has been going behind her back trying to get into Chihaya’s pants. What can I say, once a cheater, always a cheater. If Taichi can go chasing a women behind Ms. Ex’s back what’s to stop Taichi from cheating on Chihaya?  That’s right nothing because Taichi knows nothing of loyalty. So much for Taichi’s courage too, he lacks the balls to take his slap in the face like a man. It’s starting to border on sad that Taichi is this cowardly and slow to realize that he could have caught up with Arata with his money. Taichi is reduced to trying to imagine that his proximity to Chihaya equates to a relationship, but he could not be more wrong. Being the sorry bastard he is though, Taichi ascribes romantic meaning to every feel he can cop off of Chihaya when she sleeps and even then can’t stop himself from ruining the moment.

While I commend Taichi for finally realizing that he will never be a factor until he gets into Class A, it may already be too late as he is in a race against time. Taichi spent lord knows how much money in an effort to get past Nishida but while money can buy you plenty Nishida actually has friends who get him in tournaments and give him access to more karuta societies. At the end of the day Taichi has no one to blame except himself, he’s too cowardly to confess and Chihaya is closer to Arata and Shinobu than she is with him despite the fact that Shinobu and Arata are miles away and can’t see Chihaya every day. Had Taichi been serious about Chihaya he would not have dated someone else and could have tried to be with Chihaya because money is no object to him. He could have traveled once a week to see her and keep in touch, hell he could have written to her but again, no. Lack of effort will do this to you and you will reap what you sow. Zeus will not soon forget Taichi’s treachery and cowardice when it came to his last relationship so Taichi better start doing the right thing and beg for forgiveness. Taichi has to stop getting in his own way because that cruel little boy act isn’t going to work on Chihaya now or ever. Every time he is on the cusp of being a man and confessing he reverts back to insults and gets nowhere. It’s been 16 episodes and for some reason Taichi is still dithering in stating his affections.

The sooner we see more of Arata, Sudo, and Shinobu the better because the Taichi getting nowhere act is getting stale because at this rate it won’t be until episode 34 that Taichi starts and stumbles on a confession. It’s unfortunate that Ms. Ex didn’t assert herself and make a point to visit Taichi and attend club activities, at least that way we could have had some drama and put a real face on a woman scorned. Taichi better hope that this is the end of it as breaking up over a cell phone call leads to bad feelings and such feelings could lead his erstwhile lover to come back with a vengeance. Rich boy or not Taichi has few friends as it is and the last thing he needs is a real enemy considering Arata’s shadow is still kicking his ass.

Supposing you fail at getting Chitose Taichi, just take your pick...don't worry they can all handle the confessions seeing as how you cannot.

A very Wilforkian performance there Nishida. If Al Davis saw you, he'd draft you in the first round.

You know Kana-chan, you could take her to bed yourself...

ABOUT FUCKING TIME, it's been like year man. Next time do it in person so she can slap your cheating ass.

None of you should be surprised Taichi has no heart you all know this to be true.

It's not that Chihaya lacks luck, it's that the local boys lack courage.

You have everything it takes to be a monster of the midway, and all you have to do is ask Kana-chan out. Try "I was born to learn this feeling. For two and ten thousand years, I've loved you. As eight thousand years passed, I yearned for you even more. Though two thousand and 100 million years may pass, I will still love you."

Again it's largely because none of the boys bothered to ask. It makes no sense that Kana-chan has gone unnoticed for all this time.

Even if every one forgets, I did not and neither did Chihaya.

Let me know how that goes for you. The over/under line for Taichi making Class A is at 2.5 years.

Yes Desk-kun those pants make your butt look big.

Chihaya really should just make Kana-chan her workout buddy.

Better hurry up and make your move Taichi, all Chihaya has on her mind is Shinobu...

Lucky Taichi no mention of Arata today...

Oh never mind, Arata's shadow is still there in her dreams trolling you.

CHANCE okay Taichi you can either practice your confession or just pull a Shinji and jack off. CHOOSE WISELY.

Oh really THAT was supposed to make her heart flutter for a bit? Enjoy watching destiny fly away Taichi. I can't believe you couldn't even muster a "You stink deliciously."

Do or DO NOT Taichi there is no try.

She's right here Taichi, just you and her and Chihaya is as always, lovely. Anytime now you got 100 poems to choose from right now...

Yes he is and HOW.

But CAN YOU?

Guess not...

If nothing else it is so nice of Chihaya to remember Shinobu so that we never forget our Queen.

Yeah he's got a point you can't make a comeback if you are a coward.

You probably could have tried to explain that better there doc.

A most august job, though I suggest for your second job you take New UN SPACEY Valkyrie Pilot.

Or you could go with Miko of the Moon with Kana-chan being your Miko of the Sun.

Well nothing in life is worth anything unless you gain it through blood, sweat, and tears.

That's the way to go, stop playing Taichi and play against Class A Chihaya.

Could it be... dare I hope...

Stats, habits...

HELL YEAH SABERMETRICS.

It is the duty of every handmaiden to be honest with her Lady.

It's always the quite ones...

See Nishida "I was born to learn this feeling. For two and ten thousand years, I've loved you. As eight thousand years passed, I yearned for you even more. Though two thousand and 100 million years may pass, I will still love you." would have worked Kana-chan loves timelessness.

And through them you learn the true meaning of love.

She did, only your simple old haggard mind could not comprehend the AWESOMENESS of her choices. Not every girl would put bride and rich person's wife at the top of their job list.

You know I am sure Kana-chan would be more than happy to tutor you on those poems...and this is a library you can check out the book.

I guess there is hope for the OT3 of ChihayaxKana-chanxShinobu.

This episode was glorious as it saw the magnificent return of Kana-chan in full-on classical literature geek mode. Why on earth doesn’t this happen more often?

Because sadly this show is less about Chihaya and Kana-chan than it should be. Here’s hoping she finds some way to increase Kana-chan’s screen time.

Sorry to hear about Hana. Hope it wasn’t too bad and that everything gets back to normal asap. Also congratulations to her on the aunt thing, in case she’ll be able to read this or someone passes it on!

Glad to see that Desk-kuns original purpose finally comes into play. It’s been long overdue. I’m also a bit bummed out about Taichi. At some point I think I was actually holding my breath, thinking that Taichi will make some significant step forward. Alas. And there was a perfect opportunity, too. Not that I’m a fan of the whole rich guy act, but in this case it would’ve been both simple and sweet if Taichi was enough of a gentleman to invite Chihaya and cover her travel costs.

On a side note, I agree with Bob. It is, indeed, very good to see Kana-chan back into literature mode. Not only because of her explanations, but also because I greatly enjoy the little scenery behind each poem. :)

I suppose that after getting routed as they did it was time to reassess why they had been beaten. They all learned the basics now it is time to apply those lessons. Desk-kun wasn’t going to get faster overnight so he had to come up with something to make up for his lack of talent and knowledge, hence he came up with a Moneyball solution. Still there is about 50 feet of crap between him and the rest of field but at least now he can play the numbers game and bank on averages.

Kana-chan just needs to find a better way to apply her vast knowledge of the poems, I am curious as to see what her end solution will look like.

Taichi seems to have a knack for wasting opportunities should he have few of them in the future I am sure he will lament his inaction and cowardice.

Taichi, Taichi, Taichi. What a goddamn dick! The way he broke off with his gf like it was nothing left such a stupid impression on me I only felt better reading your blog post. God I needed this. It was a shame, I thought he was getting more agreeable and mature. His attitude is realistic, but this episode made me go nrrrggghhhh like none of the episodes before have. He just seemed pathetic here. I hope he perks up and at least makes it to Class A before the series ends. Taichi is cooler when he thinks about Karuta and isn’t pining over Chihaya despite not bothering to lift a FINGER to get anywhere with her.

Your idea of an OT3 makes me happy.

I think we all knew that Taichi never really loved her and while their relationship was doomed it was rather telling that he felt nothing when it happened. Fortunately for Taichi we could not see the mess that Ms. Ex’s in right now, but if we did I am sure that Taichi would look all the more worse for it. This day should still have come sooner and since Chihaya now knows if Taichi dares confess that he’s loved her since forever, well that mistake would paint Taichi a duplicitous cheater. I think Taichi just made confessing harder now as well since Chihaya might see herself as his rebound chick and would probably want none of that. All this is of course predicated on Taichi being able to confess at all though and if God wanted them together then he would have miracled it by now.

OT3 is the way to be.

I was disappointed with Chihaya this episode. She met Kana-chan how many months ago? Didn’t she have that lecture about the meaning of the poems already? And only _now_ she decides to research them?

Chihaya did disappoint but she did what a lot of people do, rely on sheer talent. Now that Chihaya has finally hit a major wall and the defeats have started to pile up it was good of her to heed Kana-chan the second time. After all there is no tonic for change like defeat. Besides I cannot fault Chihaya for sticking with her old methods of ranking the poems in a karuta friends hierarchy. It got her to where she is, but that will have to change if she wants to get to where she wants to be.

If nothing else this will hopefully mean study time for Kana-chan and Chihaya.

I think Taichi didn’t offer to pay for Chihaya to accompany him because he wanted to hit Class A in secret and then return triumphantly as a surprise to her.

It’s just the sort of stupid stunt that most guys would pull because they think it makes themselves look so much better -> rare moment of empathy for Taichi here, because I’ve pulled that sort of stupid thing in the past.

Hope Hana-senpai’s doing alright – I can imagine that the emotional/psychological shock of a burglary can be as bad as a physical hit.

He had the layup but went for the dunk only to miss the said dunk… It was a stupid stunt and it shows that while Taichi espouses self doubt deep down he is still arrogant enough to think he can just walk into Class A. Hopefully you learned from that lapse I wonder if Taichi can learn from this, though I am sure he’ll do all he can to sneak his way in. All he needs to do is find the weakest field and then go there. As to whether or not it will impress Chihaya well…hopefully Taichi can manage to play like he is in Class A and not be the biggest fraud of a Class A in Karuta history.

@Crusader: …to try and carry on without her. Do, or do not. There is no try.

…Kidding. You did, and did it very well, as always. (And thank you.)

Also, a shame about Taichi in this episode, sounds like Ms. Ex-GF wanted to give it one last try with him, but he didn’t take the bait. At least he didn’t take adv. of Chihaya while she was resting. I think he probably will confess in the near future, or gracefully bow out in the face of her stronger feelings for Arata (if that’s what they are, still not sure if she likes him in that way or not) or because he won’t want to ruin their friendship.

@Dein: I very much enjoy the scenery behind the poems too, esp. Kana-chan’s comment about the similarity in the strength of the two women’s feelings despite the passage of so many years, I thought that was beautiful. (And thanks, things are okay, and it’s defo fun being an aunt.)

@Johnny: That makes sense re: Taichi, I also saw the not offering to pay thing as also to do with recognising that Chihaya wouldn’t’ve wanted him to anyway, an independence thing, if you will. And I’m alright, thanks; I guess it was kinda like that at the time, but we’re all doing well now.)

Perhaps the poem thing will be more frequent now that Chihaya rediscovered Kana-chans teachings and is focusing on them. Maybe some private lessons will even be in order… Ahem.

      And welcome back!
