Rinne no Lagrange – 08: Mass Asteria

To the Highway to the Danger Zone!

So the Big Boss of Novumundus finally makes an appearance and apparently she was bringing along an old friend, I admit I had no idea it was Array we had seen him so few times it was easy to forget what he looked like. In fact I suspected that Asteria was a trap, how wrong I was though. Still I would really like to know what transpired between Asteria and Array, clearly they both seem to agree on the danger of the Voxes and for now I guess we are in a three way fight between Digibulio, Dizelmine, and Asteria for control of them.  Still while the destruction of the world is no laughing matter this episode was nonetheless filled with fun and funny. While I may never see a great and grand dogfight at least there was someone on the Rinne team that loves Top Gun. In case you missed it when Madoka buzzed the Pharos tower it was pretty much a solid homage to Top Gun where Maverick buzzes the tower and causes a superior to spill their coffee.

In any case we finally get some much needed history about the Voxes and of the galaxy at large. As Ancient Astronaut fiction goes it is good to see that they actually used the Last Glacial Maximum to make it more science fiction since Cro-Magnons (modern humans) have been around for roughly 35,000 years if the evidence we have is correct. As such Ancient Egypt was roughly 5000 years ago so as the theory goes if it takes only 5000 years to go from Pyramids to Space Stations then what were our ancestors doing before then? Well there is no good answer and the one presented here while plausible is simply not substantiated by any evidence, still it is a nice way to tying a very harsh environmental period to the gap between the dawn of man and Ancient Egypt. If nothing else it just goes to show how the discovery of alcohol led to civilization, this is disputable but it cannot be denied that the Ancient Egyptians were fond of brewing tasty drinks that gave people hangovers. It also goes nicely to explain why U-Go had 55 gallon drums that looked very 20th/21st Century, and covers why the aliens all look human and seem to have the same cultural roots. While this show is light hearted and silly this ancient astronaut stuff unifies the setting very nicely and shows that the Rinne crew has a clue and aren’t smoking weed while making episodes.

Asteria seems to be of the opinion that the Voxes should be controlled and it is now clear that the Voxes had gone out of control before, Kirius, Digigurio, Moid, and now Dizelmine, Lan, and Asteria have confirmed this. As for the treaties that keep Earth a neutral sacred ground it seems that things are moving inexorably towards a greater onslaught now that we know La Garite is out to start the Circle of Rinne. Quite why destroying the world is a good thing is beyond me but it seems that Dizelmine and Moid have kept their real agenda hidden from Lan. Whatever the truth is about what happened 20,000 years ago I am sure Yoko will find out. Until then it seems that Madoka is grounded indefinitely which is unfair but understandable. I am pleasantly surprised that Madoka had enough maturity to recognize the risk of flying Midori and in true Jersey Club fashion put everyone else first. All too often protagonists get too full of shit and start dabbling in things beyond their comprehension. Madoka was able to keep her ego in check and get her friends to stand down.

I think Madoka understands enough about the prophecy and for now there seems no immediate indication as to the fate of those who achieve memoria. This worries me a bit as I am unsure how Muginami will take it since she seems to know too little about the legend to have made a reasoned decision when she achieved memoria. Madoka on the other hand, seems stoic enough to not let it affect her too much, and given that she is possibly living on borrowed time I don’t see her resenting Midori. How Lan will react to the truth of her brother’s ambitions will be interesting, while Moid seems to ooze malevolence we haven’t seen enough of Dizelmine to give him the evil tag. As much as I don’t trust Vigiburio there has to be some reason that Dizelmine wants to complete the Circle of Rinne.

With regards to Madoka, Lan, and Muginami they seem to have patched things up fairly well and are growing closer by the day. I don’t care if it is gratuitous I enjoy it all the same when they share a bed, go to Seaworld, and start hugging. There isn’t much Yuri to be had this season and I fully intend to get it where I can and certainly the Lagrange crew are more than willing to comply. I just loved how yuri seemed to just ooze off the screen and it seems that even Asteria is getting in on the act by groping Madoka when the opportunity presents itself. While I think Asteria’s intentions are good I have the nagging suspicions that she is willing to go to extreme lengths to prevent the completion of the Circle of Rinne. That she is running the show on Earth and is negotiating with Kiss and Le Garite indicates that she has some political savvy and isn’t sucker material and more effective than Tadokoro. Just how De Metrio is going to factor into these events remains to be seen but if there was a mass exodus 20,000 years ago the number of factions must be staggering.

Speaking of De Metrio, it has been a while since we last saw Array, Kirius, and Izo. Hopefully they will make their presence felt and it will be interesting to see how their loyalties shake out given how only Array has any strong sentiments regarding the Voxes. I am most amused by how Array ended up in a meido outfit, again I had no idea it was Array. Perhaps his long absence was just an elaborate set-up for this joke certainly I was not actively looking for clues as to Array’s fate but it works. It seems though that Asteria might have gotten the legend from Array and has an agreement with him. Quite why Asteria needs to keep secrets from her own faction is anyone’s guess but for now it seems as though she has an Ovid pilot of her own. Nonetheless it seems that she has broken Array and cowed him into cross dressing. It was rather convincing and to be fair De Metrio seems to lean rather bishie.

While we finally get the last touches on our setting and everyone seems to have made their entrance it will be back to fun and good times at Kamogawa Girls’ School. Array seems set to show us all how he is broken beyond repair as he is still running around in meido garb. Kirius is likely going to make girls swoon, while Izo seems to be afraid of women in general. I say let the fun times roll, this series can’t do any wrong by me. I still wonder what will happen when the De Metrio boys meet the Jersey Club, since they only might have seen Array, but since he is broken beyond repair they might not catch on to the boys behind the opposing Ovids. Maybe to the Jersey Club, Array will forever be Asteria’s meido. It’ll be fun to see how Kirius, Array, and Izo will adapt while walking around Kamogawa.

LOL Madoka buzzed the tower...

I know someone who never saw Top Gun.

At first I thought Asteria would be a trap... hence the blushing maid.

I suppose she is all woman...

Careful now you should not make fun of your supervisor while he's within earshot.

I was wondering why Lan always did that... I guess this will be the end of it but at least ended on a cute note.

Madoka is used to harassing other people not being harassed.

She turned on the head lights?

Yeah my memory is kind of fuzzy too...

A math problem...

I love how she turns to goo when love is mentioned.

Good to see that NORAD is still useful even now.

Let's see who is up for election this year...

Man Obama now has a Loli problem...

No need it is always good to remind the politicians who is BOSS.

Well let's see Egyptian Civilization only dates back to 5000 years ago...HOLY SHIT WENT THAT LONG WITHOUT BEER?!

Some one did their homework, good to see that at least the team cares about being factually sound.

It's going to take Madoka a while to process this ancient astronaut stuff, she really wanted an alien for a friend.

I wonder how many hearts were broken by that statement...

I suppose that would be Digibulogio...

Oh so Yoko wants to start a family? I know a certain underling who would be most excited to hear this...

Man if Digibrolio and Yoko ever crossed paths...Yoko would win.

So nice to see that Lan worries so much about Madoka.

I guess Muginami really understands Lan.

Apparently Muginami has no fear of the supernatural.

Madoka is so chivalrous...

Only Madoka could pull this off with Muginami draped all over her.

I maintain that they did in fact kiss, any one who denies this is an ENEMY OF LOVE.

So ugh Meido-san...are you by chance related to Miss Asteria?

I guess Moid is going to move up the time table...

Grant Dizelmine is right about time, but as for light being slow...well if we are talking distances in space, this is true.

Yes what did happen to that fellow?

You could always change out...

...who is now broken.

Oh is that so? Well let's go over every detail about how this happened...

Villaguvio strikes out again...

So she agrees with Array...while Digigulio and Moid agree... Looks like were are going to have a shift in sides.

I see that Array is broken beyond repair...

Izo is afraid of women...

OT4? Or Yuri Harem?

“As such Ancient Egypt was roughly 5000 years ago so as the theory goes if it takes only 5000 years to go from Pyramids to Space Stations then what were our ancestors doing before then? Well there is no good answer ”

Well, those ancestors before that didn’t have pyramids to begin with. This is like asking “if it takes only 500 years to go from Guttenberg to Zuckerberg, what were our ancestors doing with stone tablets and scrolls for thousands of years?”

Technological progress is exponential, not linear. You can’t just apply any time frame’s advancement to other time frames, and expect it to have the same speed. In fact, it can be EXPECTED that any era took longer than the ones after it. whether in history or even biological evolution, the further you go back, the larger time frames you get between notable events.

I also liked the sci-fi backstory, and how plausible it was, but it’s not like there was really a mistery in the historical past that demands an explanation.

I am not saying that they had to do something or were simply lazy and inept. It is what it is and certainly it seems that making the discovery of beer started civilization.

I thought of the Protoculture when they mentioned the date, wasn’t that 20000 years ago? Or was that 16? Or 22? Man, my memory fails me. Anyway, while this was to be expected I still went “Not again.” in my head for a second. Loved the episode though, the “A lot of things happened.” scene in the end was priceless.

The scene with the loli chairman dressing down the POTUS is just so… anime cliché.

Otherwise, excellent as always. Now that our three heroines have come together as true friends, it’s adorable to watch them interact. I wonder if the bishi boys next episode will just glance off the yuri armor of the main trio. ^^

The more serious side of the story intruding isn’t all that bad, either. Man, I dislike Moid. I also kinda think that the next of the girls to flip out and release the rage of the voxes will be Lan, when she gets wind that her own brother is betraying her.

I don’t know we still aren’t sure how deep Lan’s loyalty runs, heck we still have no idea if completing the circle is a bad thing or did it all go wrong because of a tainted heart.

As for next week Izo looks to struggle with his fear, Kirius will be oblivious, and Array will remain broken. It will be their first face to face meeting they have yet to see each other in person outside of possible Array and in meido garb he just looks like Asteria’s maid.

So I was right the Polyhedron being the Inner Sphere. And some factions may want to play Clans to take over Terra. Not on Comstar’s watch in this case Novundus.

So 20,000 years ago something happened that with the Vox that cased Human diaspora. Now they want to come home and take over… Damn Vegans!

The chairman trolled Lan with the Wan. I wonder what else she taught her. Anyway if Lan has Muginami to sexually harass her Madoka has the loli chairman. (If it was a man Madoka would’ve already beaten the crap of him.)

Sigh~ Poor Array you thought you were away towards freedom didn’t you? LOL

Hey, a fellow BattleTecher. :D I think that “some faction” you mention may be more akin to the Word of Blake, with the burning down civilization to let something new bloom. ^^

So who gets to be Aleksander Kerensky? Because Gluigurio doesn’t fit the bill…

I only wish we could see Array’s face when he found out who it was that “saved” him.

I loved the Top Gun send up. I knew it was coming the instant he had the coffee. Granted, I doubt most japanese fans would have instantly keyed on that. But, still, this link is required: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8rZWw9HE7o

This series is still a little wacky. It’s been pretty obvious since the beginning that it was supposed to be a “Girl’s Mecha”, but the problem at the very beginning is they went the “Grrl Powa!” route. Which is always a sign of bad writing. The trope means you make the female characters better by making all of the male characters worthless, evil or both. But those themes have been slowly removed, though they can’t be completely removed. (I still wonder if Sato was brought in to fix the problems the series was having, as his natural touches are seeping in as we go.) This is also why we get some of the most gratuitous fan service you’ll see. For a more action-adventure type series, they like to go into “sudden skinny dipping” mode. Which, as a male viewer, I can appreciate its existence, but why is it in this series?

Anyway, it’s nice that the world was finally explained a bit. For a world explanation, it actually isn’t right-straight out of someone’s ass. It’s technically not a huge stretch and the actual archeological record during roughly a 10k year period is pretty much not existent. So, why not? It’s a solidly logical world explanation. It might be more logical than the existence of that jacket…

Array might become one of the most awesome anime characters of all time. He might end up Shinji-levels of broken by series end. It could be great. Though, isn’t he technically now the Trap character? Haha. Oh, the series is a two part, 12 episode run. So it’ll break at ep 12 until the summer season. So, it’ll be interesting to see where they break it. Though I don’t think it’ll be a “world is going to end if we don’t do something!” moment. It’ll probably be an end of the Villagiulio arc.

I am not sure how they planned it all out but I guessed that they were going to use that TV-MA tag that Viz put on at some point. I never thought of Izo, Array, and Kirius as bad pilots just hopelessly out classed by a a living legend that are the Voxes. However it will be interesting to see if Madoka is better than all the De Metrio boys in a one on one fight. Should she prove her supriority there it will not be because Kirius, Izo, and Array suck but that Madoka has been practicing her unconventional fighting skills for a long time.

Array is the trap and he looks to be well on the way to broken beyond repair.

Our Trio of male pilots at the beginning wasn’t really what I meant. The hints of where they started are almost completely with Tadokoro. I think it was episode 3 where he’s getting berated by one a teacher at the school. This is a guy who’s the command-level head of a defense organization. He’s going to be a hard ass, not the push over we saw at the beginning. But they’ve fixed that up quite a bit.

The setup they’re using isn’t really a big complaint, it’s just part of what they were trying to do requires fairly good writers. And the writing was failing quite a bit at the beginning, in regards to a number of characters. I think the comparison is Tadokoro against the male military leaders in the Full Metal Panic series. They made him a complete push over for those first few episodes, which is a writing technique to improve characters by comparing them to worse ones. Which is annoying because Madoka is a very interesting main character and they can do a lot with her, but they’ve tried a lot to undermine it.

And this series does have some weird tone issue with nudity. I know of few other series that’ll just drop massive amounts of nudity at the drop of the hat. If you edited out those scenes, I’m not sure this makes past a TV-7 rating, at the moment. Yet, well, ep 7 happened.

Something that I completely missed until a few minutes ago:

Doesn’t the ending scenes put the entire previous arc with Villagiulio into a completely different context? That look as he left the cafe makes a whole lot more sense. He was helping & hurting Muginami, while at the same time advancing his own goals. He’s definitely rocking that coat properly.

It also probably means we won’t get a cut & dry villain in this series. The conflict between all of the factions is likely to be the antagonist. Everyone will have their own agendas and they’ll all be operating off of a limited information set.

I still don’t trust Gigivulio entirely, Lan doesn’t like him much any more so neither will I. Maybe there is not clear cut evil, maybe this is all a great tragedy brought about by competing agendas. This won’t be Battletech but you never know…
