Rinne no Lagrange – 12(Final): The Lily and the Spaceship

Yes it was.

Well, all good things must come to an end, but luckily for us there will be Rinne no Lagrange OVAs in June and a second season in July. Still it is going to be difficult to do without the Jersey Club. As send offs go it was rather interesting that they used a flashback instead of a chronological progression. If nothing else it gave us what we all wanted in another film starring Madoka. The Rinne team seems to know their audience and while it may have happened on film it seems that Lan and Madoka have decided to embrace their yuri union. Sadly Muginami was not able or ready to participate and seems to have gone back a bit towards that lout Suckiguilio. Thankfully Dizelmine seems to have much more sense than the former crown prince and is able to negotiate a deal as well as kick Kiss out of the system. Grania had no problem shooting Kamogawa so I have no problem watching Kiss get massacred by La Garite.

What a massacre it was as La Garite simply steam rolled Villagiulio’s invasion force. I am glad that Kiss took heavy losses because this makes it easier for Lan to take Muginami prisoner. I was hoping that Muginami would simply leave Digigurio to his fate, but I guess it is too early for that. If nothing else distance has made Muginami’s heart even fonder of Madoka and I am sure that they will have a most happy reunion. I for one am elated that there will be a reunion in July as well as more fluff in June. It will be most difficult to lose Lagrange Sundays for a season but I am sure it will be bursting at the seams with Maru. The Flower of Rinne did not fully blossom but at least we know now that part of it will destroy Ovids and create a gravity field that can drag down ships in orbit.

I once pleaded to the powers that be to fund the next Madoka production, my wish was granted, and HOW. Muginami might still be on the fence, but I have the confirmation of what I had suspected all along. Madoka and Lan have embraced their Yuri love and I wish them all the best since it will be a difficult time apart. The first part was just beautifully poetic, I don’t care if it may or may not have been scripted but by Zeus I have not heard a passionate confession like that in a long time. Patrick and Andy kept it simple, but only in yuri will you have such elegant prose. Lan and Madoka looked so lovely together and I felt sad to see them have to part even if for a short time. The movie may have brought me joy to see them confess their feelings but it only added to the pain when it came time to part. I knew that this day would come but it didn’t make me feel any happier to see it end. Hopefully next time they can kiss, but in the meantime it is good to know that all three of them have been able to adapt. Madoka went back to her solo act and to be sure I laughed a little when she helped out the karuta club. I am not sure if the Rinne team simply loves karuta as well of if they are closet Chihayafuru fans but I will take the latter.

I am relieved that Dizelmine has some tact and diplomatic skill as he handled the Earth situation remarkably well. He honored his alliance with Earth, allowed Novumundus to keep Midori, and dealt Kiss a devastating defeat. Moid may have a few screws loose but Dizelmine is king and a damn good one at that. I guess that since Fulligiulio is still out there that Dizelmine’s chances of being the final boss have diminished. Having seen part of Rinne blossom it seems much of the doom and gloom surrounding it has diminished. Yurikano being the upstanding woman that she is helps a lot, given the remarkable similarity between Yoko, Madoka, and Yurikano. Still Lan seems very devoted to Dizelmine but isn’t blindly devoted to the point that she doesn’t realize her brother is more than capable of executing his enemies.

Asteria reveals herself as possibly the first pilot to cause the Flower of Rinne, and it doesn’t come off as too jarring a revelation since she seems to know a lot more about the Voxes. Asteria also seemed to be far more afraid of Rinne blooming than even Array, that she was able to deal with De Metrio, Kiss, and La Garite hinted that she knew much more about the galactic politics than a normal Terran. Madoka seems to have something special that neither Yurikanon nor Asteria had, namely the ability to maintain some semblance of control over blooming or at the very least avoid the worst of it. Certainly Madoka could not have done so without help form Yurikano and the support of Asteria. The only question I have about Asteria now is if those who achieve memoria live longer or if upon her exit from the beach that Asteria simply returned to earth some millennia after the age she was born.

If there is one clear loser in all this it would have to be Villagurio who lost most of his fleet, and failed to achieve his mission. I am not sure why Villaguilio did not simply kill the pilots when he had the chance but I guess at the end of the day, he could only kill in battle. Moreover he tried to kill Madoka indicating that he didn’t have the resolve to kill Lan or Muginami and only wanted to kill the leader. Perhaps it was left over sentiment from his days as crown prince, perhaps he simply was unaccustomed to killing hence why he needed lackeys like Grania to do his dirty work. Still I hope he begs Muginami for forgiveness since it is likely that Muginami and Hupo are the only thing standing between him and Dizelmine.

Kirius, Izo, and Array find a new life for themselves as they elect to be with Hiroshi and help out at BWH while Lan and Muginami are on vacation. It was a pity though that we were unable to see Kirius and Izo meet face to face with the Jersey Club. I would have given much to see the look of shock on Kirius’s face when he realized that he was very close to Madoka at one point and I am sure that all three of them would have seen much of Yurikano in Madoka. Moreover it would have been fun to see how both of them would have reacted to Lan. The best part would have been when the Jersey Club discovered that Array was a dude. Array wasn’t billed as much of a reason to watch Rinne when if first aired but they have made him a must watch after making him broken beyond repair. For better or worse though Array might be vying with Mako-cakes for trap honors this year.

This show had me at Maru.

Final Thoughts:

Rinne is not the most serious of shows and certainly not the best mecha series this season. In fact the mecha element is quite minimal and the combat while quirky isn’t fully into the Super Robot School of mecha combat. That said I was amused by the wrestling moves and the general light heartedness of the combat. Sure a bunch of Kiss pilots ended up dead, but in all honesty if your planet were invaded you wouldn’t give half a damn about the enemy body count as long as it was positive and steep. It was a cheery series and it made no secret of that, it certainly had a target audience and I am sure it reached most of it given the generous amounts of implied yuri and the ZOMG blatant fanservice that was advertised as such. It is a far cry from real robot and while beam weapons do show up combat was so sparse that it doesn’t become terribly irritating. Liking this series is heavily dependent on the viewer accepting the very forthright spirit that the show permeates. There isn’t much brooding and the show is generally as impulsive as Madoka and not a lot of questions are asked. I think that the lack of questions was a good thing though since they did not have the time to go into the depths of emo nor go into events outside of Kamogawa much.

Pacing for me was rather smooth it didn’t drag in places and certainly the last episode was rather odd in that it broke with the usual formula of BIG BATTLE and epilogue. They let us know off the bat that things ended well though I for one was a bit wary that it would all be a dream. I am glad that I stuck with the show even if Madoka had me pretty much at Maru. I enjoyed every episode and was amused at most of the jokes. The music for Rinne no Lagrange is probably some of the best you will find this season, Aquarion may have it beat in volume and in quality, but there is something to be said for the OP and ED as well as the BGM which just exudes genki. After a brutal work week Rinne was one of the bright spots in my weekend this season. I loved this show to pieces and I hope that those who stuck with it feel the same way. It is hardly serious, but the fun factor is undeniable for people who like fun and don’t mind having a war but not dealing with the consequences thereof. Better that it doesn’t though since all too often series that do try to deal with it often have little to offer than the same platitudes that we hear so damn often.

Final Grade: A-

Warning: Do not take if you are allergic to fun, yuri, blatant fanservice, mizugi, eels, tattoos, light heartedness, genki personalities, impulsiveness, girls being mildly hot-blooded, general absence of testosterone, and dojikko himes. Those who require a daily dose of mecha are advised that mecha content is minimal and are to a healthy diet of mecha as potato chips are to a balanced diet. If you cannot understand that last sentence please call poison control or Chaplain Crusader to complain about your lack of reading comprehension. Side effects include using Wan as a greeting, issuing royal decrees regarding skinny dipping, visions of yuri,  Maru, Jersey Club Spirit, Counting down to June and July, Broken Beyond Repair, Moid breakfast, Moid smile, inability to pronounce or spell Digigurio, judicious expenditures on fireworks and mortars, and digging through Yoko’s Trash.

It was a Maru Confession.

But she will...

Well Madoka is more compulsive, but good to see you are both passionate about each other.

Now and forever.

Hey don't mind us, we just want to see your beautiful love for one another.

I will fervently pray that The Lily and the Spaceship will be one of the OVAs.

I told you it was MARU!

But it was glorious.

That is was...

Please don't forget your fanclub Lan-hime.

LOL plebeians.

May this be Lan's Battle Banner.

A most reasonable oath, sadly not many anime leads make such solemn oaths with such sincerity.

As strong as steel and bound by love...

Madoka makes the impossible possible.

Asteria is not happy, Tadokoro is in trouble...

Apparently Rinne gives Madoka, Mix's element powers.

Damn Kiss plays dirty.

Well that's one way to justify your cowardice.

Kiss these guys goodbye.

Tell us how you really feel...

This is the worst smile I have seen in a while...

Taichi would...

And it all comes down to you...

Poor Yurikano doesn't get many visitors, but those she does get are exemplary.

Never give up, never give in.

I salute your resolve, good to see that De Metrio produced one great leader.

Together forever it's true.

Don't you know that Madoka will move heaven and earth just to be together with you.

Well at least it's not a space flower...

That it is.

Machiko has spent a lifetime patching Yoko up, Yoko will be fine.

Outrageously awesome.

Give Midori a kiss to wake her up!

Wait didn't Yurikano do this not too long ago?

Hopefully next season Lan will have improved her swordsmanship.

Also hopefully next time Muginami can deliver a killing blow to protect Madoka.

Well about time you showed up.

Yeah hugs can come later.

I'll take what I can get for fleet action this season.

Reminds me a bit of LOGH though I must admit Kiss ships looks so pretty when they burn up in orbit.

Good to know that Lan isn't naive about what her brother is capable of.

Lan will make it an OT3.

No because you will be so much more.

Soon it will be back to baseball for me as well.

LOL Chihayafuru.

OMG a love letter.

It's Yoko's badge of honor.

Yoko goes for the OT3, but she better make sure Tadokoro doesn't go for a steal.

So were you and Yurikano... you know doing this and that?

Yes it is time.

Says who?

So is there another Vox or can a Vox have multiple otome who achieve memoria?

So it's like groundhog day for you? Or is it that the same foolish mistake has been made over and over again?

Well you don't have to leave...I hope.

Good to see that you have faith in Madoka.

I hope madoka solves this problem with minimal damage to her friends and maximum damage to Digigurio.

I see that Array is still the only broken one. At least it is good that they are now Asteria's lackeys.

So, when I fired up ep 12, I was really confused.

Then I was laughing my ass off. And the only thing I could think of was “THEY FUNDED IT! OH GOD, THEY FUNDED IT!”. It was great.

I did like the episode, even if it threw us for a loop. It’s nice they tossed in some logic about why Muginami would have to leave. Too bad Kiss hadn’t shown much logic in not just offing Madoka on the ground. Or at least given us a reason why it wouldn’t help. That’s kind of the big plot hole.

The “celestial beach” is time-independent or something like that. Asteria might have used it to jump the 20k years, after achieving Rin-ne the first time. We’ll find out more, later, obviously.

I thought that it was all going to be a dream, and a most glorious one at that, but hell yeah the “FUNDED IT.”

As for Kiss maybe we will get a better explanation, perhaps it was simply a matter of honor, that or Villaburio simply underestimated Dizelmine. Certainly Kiss seemed to be caught totally unaware when La Garite’s task force entered the system and kicked them in the teeth. Other than that Kiss almost won, almost…

More answers will come but they make a point to keep it simple and haven’t allowed for too many loose ends.

This is a great show. I’m not sure why its formula works so flawlessly, but it never lost a step. I am quite happy that we will get more episodes next season and more MARU!

It’s elegant in it’s simplicity and it’s genkiness. I think that it has much to do with Madoka being cheery and largely free of emo. Being a stealth yuri series helps plenty.

I think Villagiulio after loosing Yurikano was set out to destroy the Voxes no matter the cost.

By having the Rinne bloom is all the proof he needed to use on rest of the Polyhedron that the Voxes are a threat. A justification for their superstitions.

But as Asterlia would be evidence as a previous Vox pilot Yurikano isn’t dead. Just merged with the Voxes.

As for the cycles of peace and calamity its like NBSG’s : This has happened before…

Thus we get why Asteria likened the Polyhedron as kids that ran away home only to demand their inheritance. And the appropriate response is a parent punching them for it as Yoko would put it.

These Colonies for several times have fought over the Voxes. 20,000 years ago really scared the shit out of them.

As Vox pilots don’t respond well to losing their love ones. Coming back to Earth means death.

Maybe Yurikano meant that much to Villaburio, but I wonder what his face would look like had he known that Yurikano had sided with Madoka.

It may have happened before and I am sure now that Asteria has returned that she intends to teach those naughty children a lesson they will not soon forget. If Dicelmine were wise he would do well to stay out of her way. At least he is smart enough to honor a treaty and leave Earth be after driving off Kiss.

    So it’s over huh?

BTW Crusader, there’s a prequel manga called Rinne no Lagrange – Akatsuki no Memoria that focuses on Yurikano and her students, Villagiulio’s soon-to-be minions aka Kirius, Izo, Array and Sanu, who the last one who i think was that lady who lead Villagiulio’s invasion force

I read the first chapter, I think Sanu hasn’t come up yet. Grania was the face of that defeat. That Izo… still the De Metrio boys will always be Yurikano’s lackeys they just work for Asteria her predecessor and Madoka her successor.

I was confused by Villagiulio’s motivations after seeing this episode. Here he seemed really intent on destroying Vox Aura, but in the past it often seemed more like he wanted to make the Voxes bloom.

Then something occured to me. Yurikano is Villa’s sister. She is also clearly the woman Madoka met inside the Vox (or a pocket dimension within the Vox or something -but let’s try not to make things too complicated). Now, what if Villa is aware of the fact that his sister is inside the Vox? Remember how he’d been pondering whether a giant demon would cease to be if it didn’t have a impure heart to feed off of? Or if there was even such a thing as a pure heart?

I’ve been thinking Yurikano’s connection to the Vox is probably the best way to explain Villa’s seemingly inconsistent actions. Perhaps he had to see the Voxes bloom for himself before he could decide what course of action to take. It seems to me that quite a few significant events in this series could be explained by him deliberately trying to make the Voxes bloom. (Although there are some holes -it makes sense that he would throw Muginami out in order to get the three girls together, for instance, but why bother with attacking right away afterwards? If all three Voxes need to be present for blooming to occur then what’s the point, unless he was somehow able to predict the circumstances that led to Muginami showing up on that battlefield?)

Good points though Digigurio’s thought processes are a mystery to me. Still it could be that he has a case of the stupid, he did cross Dizelmine and severely underestimated how much resolve the Novumundus and the Jersey Club had. He also underestimated how driven Dizelmine was to get to Earth.

Maybe next season will have more details but for now it is enough for me that it was fun.

This anime looks interesting…Haven’t watched this yet, but I’m planning to…I know you gave much warning about how it lacks mecha elements, but hey, this is just 12 episodes long….so I can spend a few hours to finish it and find out for myself if I’ll enjoy the series…
