All things must come to an end and while the end was far from neat and tidy it did end well enough in that Mikage did get his just rewards for being a bastard. Amata and Mikono are the end couple, granted there just wasn’t much of a shot for Zessica after the bodyjack but I kept hoping in vain. Still at least Zessica didn’t get a horrible pair the spares moment or end up with the Ranka end. Her first love did not work out and I have to hand it to her for taking her rejection with grace and dignity. Kagura on the other hand is quit fortunate to have avoided be slapped so hard the he reunited with Amata. Zessica did not deserve to be called a “bitch” that was insulting and uncalled for. I suppose that Kagura’s fate was well deserved due to his lack of respect for Zessica. Not only did he not get a good pairing in the end, he punched his own ticket into the friendzone. Perhaps this will prove a more dire fate than death since Kagura is likely to get a beating from every rare igura he talks to.
Andy and Mix finally get to Union and it was most glorious as they punched many holes in Mikage’s defenses. I am glad that in the end the blessings of St. Patrick were able to ward off misfortune even if Andy had to go through some trials of faith to prove his love and his worthiness. Given Kawamori’s penchant for trolling I almost expected to see Shrade again, but Shrade was truly dead. I was not expecting Crea to claim her own moment of awesome, but she did it with class as she FedEx-ed the Donar and Suomi ship while robbing Malloy of his moment in the sun. I was pushing hard for Donar and Suomi to get together and there were hints of it here and there, but to have it made official is glorious thing. Donar has suffered much through the years and Suomi will definitely save his heart. I confess that I was guilty of pressing pause for a bit of excessive celebration.
It was an over the top ending that was completely in line with the Aquarion spirit, this time things did end on a happier note. Zessica may have been the odd one out but for the most part everyone else ended up happy. Yunoha and Zessica will likely give each other support, unless Mix somehow claims them as waifus in the future. I have to say it wouldn’t have mattered to me much if Mix was going to be a guy, but in the end it was but a test of Andy’s undying love and Andy passed with flying colors. Aquarion was never a hard science fiction series and I can accept the crazy end that Kawamori gave us. There was a lack of mass mecha combat but it was an entertaining fight in its own right.
If there is one complaint I have it is that we never get any final clarification on how the Curse of Eve worked or so much as a glimpse of post Mikage Altair. I am glad that the world Jin and Izumo loved so dearly is alive and well, but damn it I wanted to see dudes in the streets celebrating the demise of Mikage as they tore down all the statues of the vile bird person. Toma getting Polloned came out of nowhere but it was handled fairly well in the end. It wasn’t so much Kawamori dumping on Toma as it was a statement on living in the present instead of the past, to love a person for who they are than what they were. Of the happy couples left standing at the end, Amata and Mikono weren’t 24,000 years in the making since Amata is a reincarnation of Pollon and he won because he loved Mikono and not Sylvie. Andy and Mix got together because not even a gender bend could dissuade Andy’s implacable feelings of love. Donar and Suomi got shipped together because love can strike later in life and after tragic lost loves.
Maybe one day Kawamori will tell us of the ill-fate of Donar’s first love, of the Curse of Eve, of Izumo’s near decade of hard decisions, and of Altiar’s final fate. It’s a fool’s hope considering the lack of ending for Macross 7, but who knows maybe an OVA is already in the works.
All in all it was a fun ride even if the narrative and background have plenty of holes. I am not sure if this was Kawamori filtering himself or if he is getting better at picking out moments to be silly and ridiculous. It was a light hearted series that at times seemed to be written entirely on the basis of some inane bet or simply because Kawamori could. The Andy and Mix Hole episode cemented the silliness, the Jin and Yunoha episode cemented the dawwww factor, and banana episode was the final clue to expose the not so secret fact that this series was going to be a far cry from seriousness. EVOL = LOVE may have been the most imminent joke of the year, but it was a vast improvement over the original. Satelight when given budget can churn out some amazing animation and for the most part Aquarion EVOL looked gorgeous when it needed to despite some obvious instances of animation dip.
What people may find irritating is that they went to such great lengths to give Altair and Vega their own runic language, and Altair a hard sci-fi military edge, but in the end they never fully utilized it. As is usually the case the mechanical design was wonderful to behold, though it saddens me that the basic grunt Gniss, and Ahura Gniss didn’t see that much action. What we did see of Ahura Gniss, only whetted my appetite for more. As Element powers go, Izumo had a pretty damn nifty one, and his piloting skills were almost good enough to defeat a legend. The unfortunate thing about having a limited number of episodes is that exposition was used and mildly abused (although cleverly wrapped up in humor). Given how it is unlikely that the audience saw Genesis Aquarion or its OVAs they had to do something to educate the newbies on the whole 12,000 years deal. Moreover Alicia, Izumo, and Altiar could have used more screen time so that the story would have been more complete and more tear jerky. Lastly I did want to see the girl with the pink bag’s face, but hey she had twin tails.
As pure shipping fodder it was great and if nothing else the soundtrack was superb, sadly though this series is likely going to have limited appeal due to the ample silliness and randomness. It’s not the most heart pumping super robot show, and it is a far cry from real robot but if you are okay with mecha taking a back seat to campy jokes and shameless shipping fodder, it will give you a good laugh. Personally it was a much needed does of lighthearted humor after a brutal work week.
Final Grade: A- (for veterans)/F (for the hapless fool who was looking for something profound and serious from the likes of Shoji Kawamori and his bong)
Warning: Do not take if you have had a negative reaction to Kawamori’s hippie lettuce as EVOL may induce an unwanted state of turmoil due to your inability to experience silliness. Side effects include random union, element change, feathery hair, Pollon, heightened sense of smell coupled with decrease in mental capacity, fearing for green hair girls, the Shu-shu, gender bend in women, digging holes, filling holes, random reincarnation, bad things in mirrors, Super Attacks, an inexplicable obsession with calligraphy, bad pun, 12,000 years of trolling, Infinity Punch, Altair Cannon, Hurricane of the Rotten Girl, LOVE, Inter-dimensional love, Remembering Love, marooned on Vega, a craving for donuts, an unhealthy appetite for mushrooms, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, a fear of flowers, fear of butterflies, Air Violin, Buddha Palm, Ai Ai Alicia, and eye infections.
