Aquarion EVOL – 26 (Final): For the Love of Fudo

Yes YOU SUCK TIMES INFINITY!

All things must come to an end and while the end was far from neat and tidy it did end well enough in that Mikage did get his just rewards for being a bastard. Amata and Mikono are the end couple, granted there just wasn’t much of a shot for Zessica after the bodyjack but I kept hoping in vain. Still at least Zessica didn’t get a horrible pair the spares moment or end up with the Ranka end. Her first love did not work out and I have to hand it to her for taking her rejection with grace and dignity. Kagura on the other hand is quit fortunate to have avoided be slapped so hard the he reunited with Amata. Zessica did not deserve to be called a “bitch” that was insulting and uncalled for. I suppose that Kagura’s fate was well deserved due to his lack of respect for Zessica. Not only did he not get a good pairing in the end, he punched his own ticket into the friendzone. Perhaps this will prove a more dire fate than death since Kagura is likely to get a beating from every rare igura he talks to.

Andy and Mix finally get to Union and it was most glorious as they punched many holes in Mikage’s defenses. I am glad that in the end the blessings of St. Patrick were able to ward off misfortune even if Andy had to go through some trials of faith to prove his love and his worthiness. Given Kawamori’s penchant for trolling I almost expected to see Shrade again, but Shrade was truly dead. I was not expecting Crea to claim her own moment of awesome, but she did it with class as she FedEx-ed the Donar and Suomi ship while robbing Malloy of his moment in the sun. I was pushing hard for Donar and Suomi to get together and there were hints of it here and there, but to have it made official is glorious thing. Donar has suffered much through the years and Suomi will definitely save his heart. I confess that I was guilty of pressing pause for a bit of excessive celebration.

It was an over the top ending that was completely in line with the Aquarion spirit, this time things did end on a happier note. Zessica may have been the odd one out but for the most part everyone else ended up happy. Yunoha and Zessica will likely give each other support, unless Mix somehow claims them as waifus in the future. I have to say it wouldn’t have mattered to me much if Mix was going to be a guy, but in the end it was but a test of Andy’s undying love and Andy passed with flying colors. Aquarion was never a hard science fiction series and I can accept the crazy end that Kawamori gave us. There was a lack of mass mecha combat but it was an entertaining fight in its own right.

If there is one complaint I have it is that we never get any final clarification on how the Curse of Eve worked or so much as a glimpse of post Mikage Altair. I am glad that the world Jin and Izumo loved so dearly is alive and well, but damn it I wanted to see dudes in the streets celebrating the demise of Mikage as they tore down all the statues of the vile bird person. Toma getting Polloned came out of nowhere but it was handled fairly well in the end. It wasn’t so much Kawamori dumping on Toma as it was a statement on living in the present instead of the past, to love a person for who they are than what they were. Of the happy couples left standing at the end, Amata and Mikono weren’t 24,000 years in the making since Amata is a reincarnation of Pollon and he won because he loved Mikono and not Sylvie. Andy and Mix got together because not even a gender bend could dissuade Andy’s implacable feelings of love. Donar and Suomi got shipped together because love can strike later in life and after tragic lost loves.

Maybe one day Kawamori will tell us of the ill-fate of Donar’s first love, of the Curse of Eve, of Izumo’s near decade of hard decisions, and of Altiar’s final fate. It’s a fool’s hope considering the lack of ending for Macross 7, but who knows maybe an OVA is already in the works.

Final Thoughts:

All in all it was a fun ride even if the narrative and background have plenty of holes. I am not sure if this was Kawamori filtering himself or if he is getting better at picking out moments to be silly and ridiculous. It was a light hearted series that at times seemed to be written entirely on the basis of some inane bet or simply because Kawamori could. The Andy and Mix Hole episode cemented the silliness, the Jin and Yunoha episode cemented the dawwww factor, and banana episode was the final clue to expose the not so secret fact that this series was going to be a far cry from seriousness. EVOL = LOVE may have been the most imminent joke of the year, but it was a vast improvement over the original. Satelight when given budget can churn out some amazing animation and for the most part Aquarion EVOL looked gorgeous when it needed to despite some obvious instances of animation dip.

What people may find irritating is that they went to such great lengths to give Altair and Vega their own runic language, and Altair a hard sci-fi military edge, but in the end they never fully utilized it. As is usually the case the mechanical design was wonderful to behold, though it saddens me that the basic grunt Gniss, and Ahura Gniss didn’t see that much action. What we did see of Ahura Gniss, only whetted my appetite for more. As Element powers go, Izumo had a pretty damn nifty one, and his piloting skills were almost good enough to defeat a legend. The unfortunate thing about having a limited number of episodes is that exposition was used and mildly abused (although cleverly wrapped up in humor). Given how it is unlikely that the audience saw Genesis Aquarion or its OVAs they had to do something to educate the newbies on the whole 12,000 years deal. Moreover Alicia, Izumo, and Altiar could have used more screen time so that the story would have been more complete and more tear jerky. Lastly I did want to see the girl with the pink bag’s face, but hey she had twin tails.

As pure shipping fodder it was great and if nothing else the soundtrack was superb, sadly though this series is likely going to have limited appeal due to the ample silliness and randomness. It’s not the most heart pumping super robot show, and it is a far cry from real robot but if you are okay with mecha taking a back seat to campy jokes and shameless shipping fodder, it will give you a good laugh. Personally it was a much needed does of lighthearted humor after a brutal work week.

Final Grade: A- (for veterans)/F (for the hapless fool who was looking for something profound and serious from the likes of Shoji Kawamori and his bong)

Warning: Do not take if you have had a negative reaction to Kawamori’s hippie lettuce as EVOL may induce an unwanted state of turmoil due to your inability to experience silliness. Side effects include random union, element change, feathery hair, Pollon, heightened sense of smell coupled with decrease in mental capacity, fearing for green hair girls, the Shu-shu, gender bend in women, digging holes, filling holes, random reincarnation, bad things in mirrors, Super Attacks, an inexplicable obsession with calligraphy, bad pun, 12,000 years of trolling, Infinity Punch, Altair Cannon, Hurricane of the Rotten Girl, LOVE, Inter-dimensional love, Remembering Love, marooned on Vega, a craving for donuts, an unhealthy appetite for mushrooms, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, a fear of flowers, fear of butterflies, Air Violin, Buddha Palm, Ai Ai Alicia, and eye infections.

No it’s more like Kawamori seems to have a thing against green haired girls…

So selfless, it’s why Zessica is the BEST GIRL.

Man unrequited love hurts…

YES GTFO MIKAGE! GTFO!

This is going to be crappiest wedding in history.

Come to think of it…why didn’t you possess Mikono to start with? Why bully poor Zessica?

I wish gravity was the thing that brought Altair and Vega back together…

I guess the Ianthe is still working…

I applaud Crea’s decision to become a Battle Maiden.

Well she is entitled to give her last set of orders.

Crea wants them to make babies.

Oh yeah, we are going to FedEx this ship.

Suomi will save Donar’s heart!

Love will never die…

For Jin!

For LOVE!

FOR THE EMPEROR…ooops wrong universe.

So silly yet still kind of awesome.

Good that means Mikage has no where to run!

I wonder if Crea is actually Misaka and Kuroko’s love child, perhaps Crea also carries a bandoleer of nails.

LOVE LOVE SEKIHA TENYOKEN!

What, no Vega Cannon?

Well clearly no one wants you…

Well that’s one way to slap the shit out of something…

Well it wouldn’t be Kawamori if redemption was not on the table…

Well I can’t fault the amount of effort.

Not one, not two, not three, not four, not five, not six, not seven…

Oh well I guess in the end Toma wasn’t going to get trolled hard again.

Yeah maybe this time you will not total blow the reincarnation guessing game.

Damn why does the evil Aquarion look so much cooler…

I know someone is going to be alone at series end…

I was hoping Zessica would have something a little more colorful.

Such grace in defeat.

Well he is stupid for not choosing you.

Psst…according to Kuko-rules you can marry Mikono and make Amata your waifu.

Way to be a prick Kagura…

You miscalculated Mikage…

Well you never really had a chance to…Toma was trying to lop your head off more often than not.

Eh, it happens.

Yes, even in death Silvia was trolling Mikage.

I know right?

You might want to think about that…

Were it so easy…

No it’s another troll…

His love, his sorrow, AND ALL OF HIS HATRED!

U MAD BRO?

He’s not crazy, he’s INSANE.

Yes, Kagura’s goal in life was rather limited…

Yes, though why he passed on Zessica I will never understand.

Kagura just punched his ticket to the friendzone…

Now to turn these feathers into a dakimakura…

Just as Planned for Kawamori.

Damn it…

I completely agree we don’t need to see that kiss, we want AndyxMix/JinxYunoha/SoumixDonar.

And what MANLY Tears they were. St. Noe approves of these True Tears.

Yes none of this makes sense but okay…

I just wonder how life will be now that it is a binary system…

A most just fate for a vile puppet master.

You’re in good hands with Allstate…

Fudo wasn’t too happy that it had come to this.

I am hoping that this will be like how Morgoth imprisoned Hurin…

Good that means you are ready for what is to come.

You may live in Fudo’s eye but never in his heart…

In the end Aquarion Gepard was used by Cayenne as a tool of oppression…

I guess Suomi felt that it was time to retire the nun outfit.

Suomi pining for love is fine too.

Apparently Suomi was so embarrassed that she became pregnant… Congratulations Donar and Suomi!

Andy is a most happy Paladin of St. Patrick.

If only we could see Altair now…

I was kind of hoping that Kagura would be the one to be Shu-Shu-ed.

I guess that in the end Donar was powerless before Suomi’s love.

Again congratulations Andy and Mix.

It may not be BEST END but it is acceptable.

LOL so much for seeing the world together…

Mykage got exactly what he always wanted: be with Apollonius forever. He’s warm and ‘tingly’. He got a good end. Good for him. Although I can’t for life understand why did that asshole of Apollonius got scott-free after causing the problem since the beginning. If he had man up in Genesis, Apollo and Sylvia wouldn’t have gotten split. Touma wouldn’t have raged by being trolled and thus Mykage’s birth would have been avoided.

Aquarion EVOL plot resolved 12.000 years ago.

What saddens me is the love part of Touma who saved the world got cut from this good end while his bad side got it? Because Mikono was utterly useless and couldn’t connect them. Sigh. Maybe this will be sequel hook.

Fated lovers end up together: Pollon and Ceilaine (Amata and Mikono) and Apollonius and Touma (Fudo and Mykage).

Oh, Kagura didn’t call Zessica’s a bitch. That was an awful translation by gg. He called her emo-wansgty/mopey woman since he met her when she wanted to kill herself. It was a playful/teasing/flirty nickname. She called him back ‘kuso otoko’ (not asshole) as a joke for his KUSO ONNA. I’m a little discontent that they didn’t translate this fine, because it was a meta dialogue between them.

Oh wait, let’s wait for retelling OVA that explains Zessica is Touma’s pure love half reincarnated (just in case Kawamori hasn’t ended up with his suffering).

Fudo got off because he realized it first, love the person as they are not the reincarnation. Also he dumped Touma then and wasn’t going to use Touma as rebound ass after Celiane was gone… Pollon and Celiane weren’t fated but Amata and Mikono did love each other.

He didn’t dump him. He cheated on him. Even the Japanese fandom and Kawamori called him out in interviews (Kawamori sympathized with MYKAGE). Mykage and Fudou are now together. Go read Spoon interview. As should have been since the beginning.

Pollon was fated. He wished for that, you know?

Well it is confirmed that Crea is Rena. With the line she is getting too old for this and she can teleport.

As for Apollo, Sirius and Touma they are still inside the Aquarion. Much like Apollonius, Wings of the Sun, has always been inside of it after he died.

I think the reason Apollonius reincarnated to Fudo is that he still had regrets. One is Scorpius who was his friend that killed him as Touma seduced Scorpius. In the OVA he lets Apollo try to bring back both Silvia and Reika. They reincarnated to the TV universe and got a second chance. A do over so to speak. But Reika subconsciously blames herself for what happened in her two previous incarnations. Fudo removes pages from the Book of Genesis/Twin Stars about Scorpius as Reika can decide her own fate. His other regret was Celiane. The end of Genesis of Aquarion that he can finally move on as he got his answer from Silvia. She never regretted loving Apollonius or Apollo.

Or Reika was Soumi all along. Sanae Kobayashi voiced Scorpius/Reika and Soumi.

Yeah, I think calling Zessica/Kagura as not happening is a bit premature. There was more chemistry between the two in that short scene than in the entire Kagura/Mikono, hell, more than in Amata/Mikono throughout the entire series.

It is a pretty standard happy ending, and coming off of Kawamoris last inconclusive/bittersweet endings in the Frontier TV series/movie, I appreciate that. Still, I think the series could have done with more focus on individual storylines.

    • Thess
      Posted July 3, 2012 at 12:13 pm | Permalink

It was premature. Spoon magazine interview confirms the good vibes/atmosphere (in a romantic sense) between Kagura and Zessica were on purpose. I guarantee it’ll happen now they can move on (Mikono and Amata are safe).

How funny they had to make those two romance works.

Well according to the series director Yusuke Yamamoto in animedia, Zessica and Kagura will end up together?

It’s what the fandom wanted. ZessicaxAmata was highly unpopular in Japan, the five minutes Kagura and Zessica got exploded in popularity.

For the record, he’s talking about the future not JUST NOW.

On other hand, Spoon magazine seems to have the ‘couples line up’ standing next to each others in group shots (either official or implied):

            Fudou/Mykage
            Alicia/Izumo
            Donar/Finland
            MIX/Andy
            Mikono/Amata
            Cayenne/Shrade
            Zessica/Kagura
            Sanzanka/Malloy
            Yunoha/Jin

            ….and Crea.

Another interesting bits: one of the male characters was supposed to be a reverse trap and got revealed at the end. Kawamori wanted to do this badly, but the staffers changed it.

MIX’s male arc might have been originally Zessica’s arc (no confirmation for now).

There may be chemistry but Kagura is still talking funny and I’d rather see Zessica mend her heart before dabbling in love again. Zessica’s love was true, and I want to see her mourning period reflect that. Besides it was better that Zessica didn’t change her affections at the drop of a hat. Part of me doesn’t like it period, since it’s kind of like Zessica going for the “other” Amata. It’s like marrying the brother of your last love…

You’re right. He’s talking funny because what he really thought of Zessica when he interacted with her according to Yamamoto:

        “ゼシカはすごい女だ” (“Zessica’s a great woman”)

Is he talking in semi-reverse for her too? He was v. impressed.

Seeing Apollo, Sirius and Touma again was refreshing, and it just makes me think that Aquarion is actually the real “Book of Genesis” , if parts of souls were kept in Aquarion every time someone dies in it, it would kinda explain why Shrade was able to help Cayenne with Geparda.

Mikono seeing the guys that sacrificed themselves and Fudo appearing to guide her, just seems to parallel what happens in Sousei. The theme of Aquarion should be “the past shouldn’t affect the present”

Mykage got his happy ending. Good for him! He always wanted to be with Apollonius forever and so he did. Just like Toma’s song about their love Sousei No Aquarion says that he’ll continue loving him for a million more years.

Kagura and Zessica were playfully insulting each other. They didn’t even care that the other called them that. The start of a beautiful friendship. Shrades ghost did appear in the final episode. That’s how Cayenne could make Aquarion Geparda by combining their power.

The thing about loving in the present doesn’t really mean a thing in the end. Pollon and Celiane as well as Toma and Apollonius were always destined to be together. Amata/Mikono and Mykage/Fudou fulfilled the fate that was destined for them. So living in the present doesn’t mean anything because Fate will pair them even if it takes 24,000 years.

Also I didn’t realize it till I talked to someone else but all those visions Kagura had of him and Sylvie were actually the movie based on what happened 12,000 years ago. Mykage implanted false images in his head.

    • Whatsht
      Posted June 29, 2012 at 6:09 am | Permalink

The thing about loving the person as they are right now means a thing, Amata said he loves Mikono for who she is and Apollo didn’t give a shit about reincarnations.

      • TheVoid
        Posted June 29, 2012 at 7:10 am | Permalink

The final episode actually reversed it. Kagura was the one who was saying he loved her for her. Yet Amata talks about how he was reborn again in order to learn how she felt from back then which would mean it was destined and even says that he won’t leave her like he did back then.

Not to mention at the end he was still destined to be with her. Kagura wasn’t that’s why him and Mikono was forbidden. Because Fate decreed a union between Mikono and Kagura was forbidden.

Kagura’s fixation on Mikono was always her as a movie version of Silvia.

Amata recognizing that she was also Silvia meant that he loved her 1) for what she was now and 2) what she was then as Silvia, which then go hand in hand with him pledging to love her in the future when they were 3) old and had changed.

Eh Amata DID give a crap about reincarnations in the end, do you forget the “I was born to feel what Sylvia did” as a big part of his speech.

The one who really defied fate was Kagura, who actually never got a memory of the past. Aside of the scent, he was only brainwashed into believing a movie was real by Mykage. He was controlled in the manner Zessica was because of his destructive love. Fitting they found each others and cured themselves of the toxic of their affection (Zessica was self-destructive and Kagura was destructive with others).

Kagura inherited the burden of the past life.

Amata never did. His recognition of their past life came from what he saw in the Aquarion with Shrade and previously when the Aquarion performed the Super Dimensional Punch.

But he did. Before ‘fate’ became an obstacle, he said to Mikono it was fate they met and that he felt he met her before. He recognized her by the “promise.”

            Kagura recognized her by “smell”.

I should be back on track soon, AX got in the way and I have a promotion test soon, but I will make the effort.

I would watch a harem comedy mecha anime starring Mix and Andy, revolving around Mix(y)’s growing harem starting with Zessica and Yunoha. I’d even be fine if Amata and Mikono guest-stars in an episode, for like 5 minutes, max.

Good ending to a hilarious series. Dunno why all the nerd rage, but hey, can’t please everyone in the internets.

Somewhere Kawamori is laughing and flaming them while smoking his bong. Soon he will cash in his check and then get around to making more Macross.

Harem mecha comedy starring Mix and Andy? Why yes, Kawamori should just take my money now…

Hahhahaha. After marathoning Sousei no Aquarion, I noticed all the cues that Apollo is not Apollonius.
    1 – Acts like a dog
2 – ED has him and dog together
3 – The Apollonius & Angels scenes has the cute doggywoggy in them.

    The puppy love.

    Also Fudo is God.

To be fair the ED changed in places after momentous occasions, like Jin’s death.

Umm… I mean the cues in Sousei no Aquarion. Everyone including the viewers were fixated on him being Apollonius’ reincarnation until the Great Revelation 12,000 years later. Watched 25/26 of LOVE noinauqA but not the rest yet ;p

        Fudo is still God.

      Finished!

      #1 – Fudo!
      #2 – Mikage!
#3 – All the innuendos… “THE BANANAS ARE NOT A SNACK!” coming from the rori.

You don’t know the amount of smirking/rofl’ing during the henta… henshi… nenshin sequences.

If you look under the bonnet, the story is actually the Grand Chess Game between Fudo and Tou-kage. Mikage could have anytime wiped out NeoDeava he wanted but he chose to delight in the delectable suffering of humanity. Fudonius in the same respect could have tipped the balanced whenever he wanted but that wouldn’t have been fun and the characters wouldn’t have learnt anything.

The Ahura and its Divine Buster cannon surely could have used more time.

MIXY is cute. Andy is obviously a shotacon too!
