Tari Tari 01-02: Band of Bards

Hmm…I wonder if Sawa does horse archery in her spare time.

I am surprised by the number of shows that have caught my interest this summer, usually this is the slowest part of the year but Tari Tari has managed to stand out a bit for me. It looks to be a more laid back slice of life series and while I feared that Wakana would be a pouty little whiner I am very much relieved that she is more than capable of lending a hand. In fact while Wakana seems to be the least social of the group, there is plenty of hope for her as she seems willing to take one for the team even if she demands tribute in the form of cake. I am not sure yet if this series is about making the most of your last year as a kid or if this is more about growing up into being an adult. To be sure Wakana’s mother will figure in, but I wonder if we are going to dwell on the childhoods of the others. Judging by the setup Wakana is going to be in line for the most development though who knows maybe Wein has a dark secret that he has yet to reveal.

The choir and singing seem to figure prominently as the school does have a stronger music curriculum than most. Having an important recital seems to indicate that their school is more of a conservatory than your average school setting. I really liked how they worked in Reflectia from True Tears as it does show that PA Works hasn’t forgotten that they started out small and are still relatively new to the game of making anime. I am curious as to where they take this though since it seems far too happy and laid back for any serious drama but they hint enough at some watershed moment between Wakana’s mother and the Vice Principle. Hopefully this will mean that the music will be excellent, and so far they have delivered. Otherwise it should be a fun Bard’s Tale.

Konatsu seems to the earnest one that seems to be lacking in tact though she excels at using threats to get what she wants. It must have been awful to have screwed up so mightily at last year’s recital and to have it posted on the internet for all to see. The failure was bad enough, but to have it uploaded for all to see from here on out must have been galling. At least Konatsu seems to have a better handle on her plans for a comeback and she is greatly helped by her friendship with Sawa. Konatsu is still in Wakana’s debt but hopefully they can both get along, both seem musically inclined and I am sure that they will be able to produce great things together. It looks like Konatsu is well on her way back now that she got over her stage fright.

Taichi and Wein haven’t really made their presence felt though Wein seems to be taking the place of a foreign national given his social miscues. I can’t blame Wein though, Austria is very different and certainly given that he lived in Vienna I am curious as to how musically or artistically talented he is. In ye olde days Vienna had its fair share of big names and it is still is a cultural power house of sorts. Gone maybe the hey days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire but Wein was better off not being a poorly lead Austrian combatant. Taichi seems more interested in being the club of one for badminton still I am sure the guy is starving for competition as the wall is not putting up much of a fight.

Sawa seems to be the one that will bind them all together, for she has a knack for getting people to cooperate and in turn seems to be of great help to those around her. While Konatsu was unable to get Wakana to offer any assistance the first time, Sawa figured out how to appeal to Wakana’s compassion and laid out the tale of Bard Konatsu’s EPIC FAIL. I almost mistook Sawa as a rich ojou-sama but it seems now that she is likely a miko. Sabure is also likely the horse they use for festivals and I wonder if Sawa given her horsemanship and archery skills practices Yabusame as well. Certainly her skills with the bow are formidable but I like how she does celebrate good shots even if it is slightly improper during organized activities. I really like how she took control during the ensuing chaos after Konatsu was practicing in the park. Sawa has been a most true friend to Konatsu, while she still jokes about Konatsu’s misstep but for the most part she has been very supportive of Konatsu. Sawa even contributes a few ideas to help Konatsu along her way. I am not sure if they mean for Sawa to be tall dark and bishoujo but it certainly seems that way given her height and refinement.

I for one will be activating the yuri goggles for this one. Sawa seems to have a certain fondness for Konatsu that plays into the yuri all too easily. Having the ED where they waste time together also greatly adds to the possibility. I am all for BRIGHTSLAPS but what Sawa did to Konatsu to get the latter motivated had a charm all its own. Besides taking Wakana home after fending off Taichi and Wein seems to indicate that she has little use for male attention. Also the way she looked at Wakana…

Hopefully I will have time to post more regularly and if luck holds maybe some of by co-bloggers will be all in as well. Until then please encourage them to pick it up as well.

I approve of the tribute to True Tears, people may not remember but I will never forget.

Wakana seems to have attracted some attention…

Megane Wakana is fine too.

I like this Takai-sensei already, she’s shipping her students!

I think she would rather be surprised.

YES, embrace the YURI WAKANA.

Yeah I am not a fan of Japanese bows, I like those pimped out composite ones that costs ungodly amounts of money.

I hope that their chemistry will produce a yurilicious reaction.

We are off to a good start…Wakana’s heart does need saving.

This is why Makoto should encrypt his data…

Hey the course of yuri love never did run smooth.

I hereby declare that Sawa is the Queen of Tari Tari.

Because practice matters, and Sawa saw what happened with Allen Iverson…

Believe in the dream kid and one day Mr. Kawamori will walk by and start your legend.

IS YURI, SAWAxKONATSU OTP #1, more to follow.

It seems that they are not yet fast friends…

Her majesty has decided to take charge and is off to a good start in establishing her yuri harem.

I see that Queen Sawa has many pet names for Konatsu.

Yeah it’s not so funny when you star in one of these, but at least you don’t have ESPN putting you in a Not Top 10…

Yeah… that was pretty bad…

Glad to see that Wakana was willing to volunteer if only for a little…

Milady is most gracious.

I like a monarch who is not above excessive celebration, feel free to adopt maru maru if you are so inclined your highness.

Who you calling weird buddy? Besides you will be Sawa’s lackey soon enough…

Makoto needs to learn the wonders of AES encryption.

I admit I could not have done half as well.

Is 1776?

Let me guess you shot with your off hand just for kicks.

I wish I could hit a bullseye with a bow, at least I can do it with a M-16 and M9.

I take it that Sawa is going to go with a patented fist pump.

I guess cake is now the preferred method of bribery.

I guess Wakana really likes cake.

I guess Wakana’s mom will figure more prominently in the future…perhaps this means we will see the vice principal in otome mode.

Maybe Wakana is destined to finish her mother’s work.

I guess Makoto took Konatsu’s threats seriously.

Hey now every one has to start somewhere, we aren’t all born musicians and singers…

I did not need to know about everything you waxed sir…

Why do they all assume that Sawa is with child? Come on man…at least ask her first…

Can you hear me now?

I usually prefer BRIGHTSLAPS, but this is also fine.

Hail Queen Sawa, first of her name, for her boundless faith in her friends!

Give ‘em hell kid.

I think that this is the start of a very special friendship…

Man, you’ve been pumping out posts in overdrive mode. Great stuff, especially since the others have been laying low recently.

Anyway, I am really digging this show. A lot more than I thought I would. And sure, the True Tears song might’ve had something to do with it (incidentally, one of my all time favourite OP songs), but the lead characters are really quite cool. Some are saying that they’re just repackaged the cast of Hanasaku Iroha, but personally I feel like they show a lot more detail and depth in these 2 episodes than the the HanaIro cast had in the entire show. Also, despite my original prediction that I would somewhat dislike Sakai, she ended up being my favourite character so far. Will be praying extra extra hard to the yuri gods on this one.

Overall, the show looks great, the story is expanding at an excellent pace, has a lot of detail and the characters are plain fun to watch. Oh, and for some reason, the part of the ending where they’re sitting on the fountain/whatever that is and dangling their feet reminded me of the True Tears OP where they’re sitting on the letters.

I am on over drive because I had jury duty today, it won’t happen again for a while I am afraid.

It’s not a repack of HanaIro for one Wakana isn’t nearly as grating Minchi…

I hope Sawa comes away with a formidable yuri harem certainly she seems to have earned the love of Konatsu. Wakana might be a more frosty proposition though…

Amen Bro, we need to convert EO on the matter of Tari Tari and the merits of Sawa’s love for Konatsu.

Umm, nope. That’s a Buddhist temple. A shame though.

That archery really bugs me. Now, it may just be the traditional Japanese way, but it still looks way wrong.

First, the arrow is on the outside of the bow. Why? That would make it really hard to aim down the arrow. I know you can still adjust your sighting to whatever, but that still seems weird. (On further investigation, it seems this might be an East Asian thing; there’s a picture of a Korean master on Wikipedia that shows him doing this.)

Second, they grip the arrow, not the string. It looks like they have knocking arrows, so that is totally unnecessary and would make you pretty inconsistent unless you are really good (and that seems to be the case, at least in these shots). And even if you are to grip the arrow, you grip behind the fletchings, not on them; it looks like there is almost a finger slot for that on these arrows.

Third, they have finger guards (gloves) and chest protection, but no arm guard for the bow arm. That’s a lot more likely to get slapped by the string than the chest. And it hurts.

Forth, that target is whack. What is with the second ring being so narrow, and the bulls-eye being so huge?

Now, these all might be how they really do it, and PA Works did some research, but it still looks wrong.

Also, Ohana is having such a hard time because her posture is all wrong. But that’s a typical beginner’s issue.

Keep in mind that Archery wasn’t exclusively used for warfare purposes and had some ceremonial value that wasn’t intrinsic to archery in other parts of the world. You are right they do make things harder than they need to be but Sawa isn’t planning to unhorse some charging plate armored knight at 300 paces.

Also the Japanese bow’s design means that the grip isn’t at the middle and the top portion is larger than the bottom portion.

I personally thought that the recital was sort of rushed(?), I mean, couldn’t they have spent another episode building up on it more…

When they were making all that fuss about performing, I was like “WHAT, THIS IS THE ACTUAL RECITAL?!” Yeah, I was slow on picking that up.

It could be that they have grander ambitions than the recital, maybe they want to close into the becoming adults portion of the show. Certainly given that Taichi and Wein weren’t forcibly conscripted yet means that the best should still be to come.
