Muv Luv Alternative – Total Eclipse – 03: TSF 0083 Plus

I HAVE YOU NOW…

So now that Kyoto has been reduced to rubble and ruin it only seems proper that the UN get its shit together now that almost all of Eurasia has been lost. I am doing my best to avoid spoilers and the like and as a green horn I cannot understand how having a Top Gun program is going to help humanity crush the BETA threat and expel them from Holy Terra in 40,000 xeno pyres. Of course the Tyranids break every rule in science fiction so just give me a minute while I put on Highway to the Dangerzone…

HELL YEAH! It is good to see that the memory of Top Gun is still strong despite Maverick going nuts on Oprah’s couch. I’ll be honest the nicknames given have been rankling with my enlisted sensibilities, now I know that fly boys and fly girls have their heads in the clouds but damn it they are more ground pounders now and they need better nicknames. Yuuya Bridges is an odd name, but my first instinct is to call him Hosaka in the hopes that the will “GET FRIENDLY” with Yui. Unfortunately it seems that Yuuya has a problem with Japanese Purebloods, so I will call him Jim Morita because he is Fresno no Ace and a supporter of Captain America. Italy should simply be AEU no Ace because let’s be honest we all know that VG will be hard to kill given that he is the heir to Immortal Colassour gene. He may not be the highest on the pecking order but I hope that not even the vile Tyranids will be a match for the Cockroach Helix.

Bremer may be a looker but Venus doesn’t do her justice, nay she’s not just a pretty face she can shoot too. As such she will be Artemis. Tarisa got slapped with the title of Chobi, but let’s be honest that’s not very imaginative I will call her “the Duke.” As for Dogulu I am going to call him Tiny until such a time as he proves worthy of the title of Barbarossa (aka Red Beard). I am a bit disappointed that we will be taking a break from GRIMDARK and braving the treacherous seas of harem. The last thing I want is for every girl in the show throwing themselves at Jim Morita. I want sexy mecha action and not skin tight suit scene #3720, and if the world is ending I DO NOT WANT A BEACH EPISODE and may Zeus strike the down the animation staff if they also head to the Mall on the eve of a BIG FIGHT.

Still my own inane fears aside I hoping that this Top Gun arc is going to turn out like Macross Plus so let the competition begin! Let it be fierce because the Ruskie Twins have a bigger mean streak than Guld. I guess that we now have psykers maybe they will be Chaos Sorcerers or GK Librarians, at worst they will be Weird Boys… in which case the BETA threat will be expelled from Holy Terra through fantastical weapons of more dakka and an endless tide of TSF stompas and gargants that are painted red and festooned with burnas. This weapons development plan seems to have very little to do with BETA but I will take if it means that there is some sexy mecha on mecha action without the Newtype BS. I just hope they don’t kill each other in training even if only 1 in 100 aspirants ever become Space Marines there is no need to lengthen the odds. Let it be instead more like the Alpha Legion, either they graduate as a team or they don’t graduate period. There is no “I” in team but there is an “I” in FAIL. Even if they all have some growing pains to get through I hope their simulated fights in the OCTAGON will make for good glorious fun.

Hopefully the result of this program will be the biggest baddest gut stomping BETA busting TSF they have yet devised. I just hope that once Boening gets the contract that they will crank them out with all due haste unlike that Dreamliner…

Wait you’re not Goose…

But it was such a lovely feeling…

Damn where’s Jester when you need him?

Or go to Polar Bear Cafe…

Forget Top Gun I am voting for Bridges to be either Itsuki, Dizelmine, or Hosaka…

Well at least it wasn’t a flat spin…

I hate that purple…what are we Emperor’s Children? Marneus “Papa Smurf” Calgar is most displeased. Also Rogal Dorn wants you to know that camo is heraldry of cowards…

Well isn’t that the point of Drop Pods?

Okay you beat another TSF…I just want to know how your little aerial stunt is going to work against BETA…

So I think we have found yet another Knight of St. Patrick, after all we accept all kinds of love even Twincest…or whatever it is you two call it, so long as your love is true.

So does that mean they are all united under the Neo-Hong Kong banner and lead by Master Asia?

Oh…so I guess we are having a Macross Plus kind of competition…I hope we get upgraded ghosts.

OH YEAH LET’S SETTLE THINGS IN THE OCTAGON!

If only the US was really hiding Supervision Army tech…

Come on Yui just ask Siri…

Let’s play follow the loli…

Hey Charlie…

She’s your flight instructor…

Well here’s hoping you will be more ace than Ace of Base.

But you can call him AEU no Ace…

I hope she brought her own Kukri to the party.

Damn it…I can I still call him Red Beard even if he only has a goatee?

So who’s representing General Galaxy and Airbus?

Not very flattering…

King Arthur and his Knights of Justice still stand firm I see. If only that Maginot Line worked.

Maybe we should name him Jim Morita because he’s Fresno no Ace.

If you get naming rights miss, could you christen the group Diamond Force and take the mantle of Machida?

Well I hope Vincent doesn’t end up being a Billy Goat…

You know… maybe you guys should call yourselves the Immortal 4th Team.

Just call it Top Gun…

So who wants to be Kim, Shammy, and Vanessa? Remember, only Shammy gets to rip off people’s pants.

YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME.

So you want to be Ice Man?

I confess I am tempted to ship this…I want this arc to be ersatz Macross.

Do that again lady and your nick name will be “Wide Right…”

I have no idea how this helps fight against BETA and Laser Class spam but I’ll take it.

Well I guess since we have to operate in pairs we will have to delay the Norris vs. 8th Team homage.

I guess the Kid want’s to Maverick.

Don’t forget to slip turn…

St. Patrick, Paladin Andy, and Nyaruko believe otherwise, and one must never question the Power of LOVE or malign deities.

Well he might be related to a cadet branch of the Clan Colassour…

That’s right Kou Uraki, Monsha can beat you…

I would have preferred ERUPTING BURNING FINGER but this will suffice.

So the lesson is never bring a knife to gun fight…

Yeah Maverick, being a lone pilot with no wing man is like setting course for the Highway to the Danger Zone.

He’s Isamu, but more importantly who wants to be Sharon Apple?

I want to see how they want to pull off this ship…

Well they aren’t exactly the numberless hordes if BETA nor have I seen BETA pull off fancy maneuvers like they do…

If your enemy is going to be other TSFs yeah there is value in what they are doing, but they should be fighting BETA…I find no fault in training I do find fault with training for the wrong war.

This to me not training for the BETA but more of a team building exercise. They are all new and are going to be working together in the development of new TSF’s. So I guess it would be best to see how everyone meshes, reacts and works with each other.

This base was after all for the joint development of TSF’s. So better to get a comparison against other machines to flush out strengths and weakness and develop a better machine. Now overall does fighting each other in exercises develop tactics against the BETA? Obviously no, but I am looking at the base, and its personnel and its goal in the basic concept of TSF development. (After all the US in this world still won’t export the F-22, so time for a JSF style project)

On a side note, test pilots are a brave bunch by nature. They are pushing and developing systems based on newer technologies that would probably not be though of in a simulation. In the real life F22 Raptor, they developed the tactic of active radar searching using an F22 out of enemy missile range. This in turn attracts the attention of aggressors, but the aggressor cannot attack that plane even though they see it. Mean while another F22 is being fed the radar data and is heading straight into the aggressor squadron but due to his high speed straight on approach and no active radar signature, he can get in range and target using his wing mans data while not being seen. I believe in practice exercises the real F22 has an almost untouched simulated kill ratio against even the best US 4th gen fighters.

Of course I will digress that in the end they are fighting a huge horde of insects that have incredible numbers and are incredibly hard targets that can deny air superiority in any fight. The development of a stronger TSF goes a long way in being able to mitigate that threat. How they do it still remains to be seen.

If it was a team building exercise they should have included everyone, the biggest looming conflict are the ones with Russian twins and Yui.

Yeah a new TSF would help mitigate the BETA threat, but you still need a very lop sided kill ratio for them to be the deciding factor. As is the TSF seems to be merely holding the line and given the lack of Aces in general humanity would be better off having the Aces be instructors to new pilots.

The classic example of where aces and good planes were unable to stem the tide would be the Luftwaffe, they had more aces their planes were in some cases better. However the Western Allies in particular pulled out their aces once the got enough kills and put them through the instructo rotation to increase the competence of their air forces as a whole. On the German side their aces often fought to the death in a losing fight. I cannot help but feel that this is the kind of situation humanity is facing…

It’s acceptable but in no way does this make total sense, it does seem like a defense contract that has gone over budget and overtime in the making.

In regards to the team building exercise, I do not believe the Russians are part of this project. Although whats left of their Gov is borrowing part of Alaska and they are on the same base they have some kind of agenda that seems to be separate from the others. After all the twins were not included in the initial team make up. And after watching ep 4, that makes it more apparent.

Sorry for not knowing anything about the source material, but from I have seen on episode 2, I thought fighting BETA is all about mob control? These brainless cretins charge at you in like group like there are no tomorrow. Individually, they are weak and can be defeated by trainee pilot girl. But they are ultimately overwhelmed by sheer number.
So… what’s the purpose of having tactical mock battle between intelligence beings?

Because training in the military isn’t just exclusive to one particular situation. This is true even in the real-world military.

There were plenty of combat exercises in the VN too. Practice exercises allow a pilot to get a better handling of the TSF’s they pilot and get used to it. More importantly it promotes team coordination and camaraderie, something VERY important when fighting BETA. This episode alone, Yuuya himself showed that he could trust his teammate to back him up.

They’re just doing familiarization exercises at the moment, the actual XFJ program is just beginning. TSF development of course takes into account both TSF versus human performance and TSF versus BETA performance, and trials are run for both scenarios. Shiranui Second, the product of the XFJ plan, is pitted both against other TSFs and against BETA as part of development and evaluations. While BETA are the most obvious threat to humanity as a whole, capability to fight other humans is also taken into account, and if you’re going to sink most of your R&D budget into TSFs you want to be damned sure both sides are covered by it or risk being vulnerable.

She criticized him because he did a high-altitude maneuver. It was very impressive and highly-skilled but it ultimately would make you a sitting duck for a Laser-BETA. The fact is that while Yuuya is a highly-trained elite and arguably better than Yui (America has the best TSF training program in the world) he has no real-combat experience with BETA. In Yui’s mind all that matters is beating the BETA.

    • CobaltPhi
      Posted July 18, 2012 at 8:07 am | Permalink

Yuuya has no real world combat experience against actual BETA, only simulator at best. His real-world experience has been all TSF versus TSF. Probably Yui didn’t like his attitude.

    • CobaltPhi
      Posted July 20, 2012 at 7:15 am | Permalink

In addition to my previous post, basically Yuuya’s style is unsuited to Japanese TSFs.

To put Yui’s trash talking in perspective, you have to take into account the difference between United States and Japanese designs.

US TSFs are heavy machines with high thrust and an emphasis on long range, JP TSFs are light machines with low thrust and an emphasis on maneuverability and fucking swords.

Yuuya gets the most out of powerful machines with a ton of power. By American standards Yuuya is very good because he is a master at abusing the advantage of his TSF’s speed and acceleration, using his reflexes and instinct to see him through.

But as Yui and Vincent note that such tactics are reckless and almost impossible to replicate when using Japanese TSF because shitty thrust to weight. Since he doesn’t use the mechanical characteristics and control surfaces of a TSF for close combat maneuvering (pretty important for Japanese TSFs), this makes him pretty fucking shit for developing an improved Shiranui to be used by the Japanese. This is why he’s going to be chucked in a Japanese Fubuki trainer next episode, which is a great handling machine with fuck all for power and be forced to learn to sword fight.

The attitude problems are there, the lack of experience against BETA is there, but when Yui dismisses him she’s referring to how he’s adapted to the F-15E’s strengths without being rounded as a pilot. Ibrahim and Yui have piloted vastly different machines and presumably VG and Stella came from a background of lightweight European TSFs as well.

-As I mentioned, before the solution for the BETA is being done. Its the called the Alternative Project, which is important to the plot of the MLA VN and will NOT be touched on by TE since its a side-story. TE was written for one thing in mind: Mecha pr0n. TE has all the cool mecha, most of them that never even seen in the VN. TSF research is important since better TSF’s mean better odds against BETA in the front-lines. Its really not that hard to figure out.

-TE does have harem elements. Its pretty standard for Muv-Luv, all its stories feature a dude with lots of girls in his squad. TE is actually unique in that it has more than one dude in its main cast. I’m not sure about TE but the VN did have a short beach scene (R&R does exist you know).

    - Yuuya hates anything Japanese. And yes, he does have a Japanese name since he was born from a Japanese father and an American mother. He has…issues with his mixed heritage.

    - The Russian TSF in the beginning is the Su-37 Terminator. Its known for quick maneuverability since it has thrusters on its front side. This particular one is modified to be a two-seater.

-The units used by the Argos Flight are F-15 Strike Eagles. Heavily modified F-15′s to keep up with the recent TSF models. The ACTIVE Eagle another variant of the Eagle with less armor but more thrusters making it faster.

Well if it is meant to be simply Mecha pr0n I can try and enjoy if from that angle, it’s just a bit difficult since they seem to want us to believe that this project is integral to saving humanity but in the end it translates to a rather inefficient use of dwindling resources. I jsut want my mecha pr0n i don’t want it deviating into GSD.

R&R does exist, but as an 8 year veteran I know that leave can be cancelled and leave is not always granted especially if you are in theater and there is shooting going on. Love will find a way, but honestly harem crap is not needed if they want to go for realism inappropriate relationships are discouraged as jealousy of that type would likely destroy unit cohesion. Maybe things are different for fighter jocks, if the shit where they eat then yeah I can see why they have a higher turnover rate than other specialties.

However with the seeming death of air power, they should be treated like infantry. I’ll be honest I would likely drop this series of every girl was throwing themselves at Bridges and we get onsen episodes and an inexplicable trip to a tropical paradise as the enemy is at the gates. I didn’t like it in GSD I won’t like it now.

I think you are falling victim to the wonder weapon aspect, I have studied military history for years the TSF is not going to be a game changer by itself. The issue is not technological superiority but lack of pilot training. Using Aces and veterans to test out new systems is going to do little in the big picture if the pilots aren’t up to par. In fact they would be better off parceling out their aces to teach new pilot classes, that would translate to more tangible gains in military power in a shorter amount of time. Even if they work out the new design the thing still has to go into production. Having seem the death of many weapons projects even if they come out with a better weapon other things go into it as well, ease of maintenance, ease of use, combat radius, and since we are still penny pinching, cost.

If this was really about fighting a war the game changer would be better infantry weapons that can be spammed. Kind of like how the missile made infantry a threat to everything, the emphasis on TSF would likely result in the same scenario as Vietnam and early Yom Kippur War in that the limits of air power will be revealed. Air Power and TSFs are striking arms and not ideal siege units nor do they seem capable of holding ground. Just my 2 cents.

      • fragb85
        Posted July 22, 2012 at 8:59 pm | Permalink

TSF’s are designed because they were agile and capable of 360 degree combat unlike combat vehicles. Its a game changer since the bulk of the BETA large agile creatures. The TSF are also far more effective in avoiding Laser BETA. Mechanized Infantry is only effective against the smaller infantry-class BETA.

I don’t get why so many are saying TSF’s are ineffective when a single TSF with a trained pilot can kill dozens on its own. That’s why the F-4 Phantom (and its many variants) has been the most popular design in the world and still continues service despite being nearly 30 years old. Such TSF forces have been holding the line against encroaching BETA for decades.

        • Crusader
          Posted July 23, 2012 at 12:17 am | Permalink

It’s simply that the kill ratio just isn’t seemingly good enough it’s like how the Germans used to say that a Tiger could take on 10 Shermans but in the end the 11th Sherman would get them. It was a numbers game and in the finally tally the lowly Stug III/ IV had better overall combat efficiency despite being not as sexy a weapon.

The TSF is a good weapon but everything else just rankles my military sensibilities. It is very much Top Gun but the more I see the lack of war sense the more it breaks the mold of realism. It isn’t going to be a new 8th MS team but it’s better than what I was expecting at first.

Think of it this way the F-16 is a sexy fighter jet but as air support it loses out to the old ugly warhorse that is the A-10. Different tools for different jobs hence why one TSF design being the be all end all is a rather silly notion if we stick to the realm of real weapons design and procurement.

As for holding the line they got pushed back plenty of times by the look of things. If you have never heard of the Yom Kippur war I suggest you read up a bit on it as well as the Six Day War. It was the last modern war that took place between roughly evenly matched forces, it’s good stuff if you want to see how combined arms works these days.
