Max Factory 1/8 Mikuru School Festival Variant + Lamentation Over the Weak Dollar

Why yes I would gladly pay 300 yen for some badly fried soba and all the water I can drink.

Well now the circle is now complete and I got my 1/8 Max Factory Mikuru in School Festival outfit. Given how times are kind of tough right now I guess this will be the last thing I’ll be getting for a while. Thus far given the weak dollar this is about the most I have ever spent on a figure to date. So I have been wondering since the dollar is weak any of you boys and girls still shopping like crazy importing stuff? This also another plea to the cult leader to give us secrets so we might be able to buy more; alas Moyism is remaining tight lipped about the secret to avoiding financial ruin. Now that I have one figure for every character in SHnY I feel some what triumphant, but for some reason I feel content to the point that there is nothing right now that tickles my fancy. Not sure if this is a sign that I have lost the passion, but unless one of the big PVC companies is putting out a Sheryl, Ranka, Klein, and Alto-hime figures I can’t think of anything coming out or has been released that I just had to have. (Yeah I suck at photography get over it.)

She may trip and drop it all…so any one want to take the hit?

Looks Megas good ~nyoro

So I am not sure if I have become wiser or that the passion has just faded. I am glad Mikuru arrived, but some how the gut wrenching price of 20 more USD than usual removed some of the joy. I am fortunate that I have enough discipline to not have bought a bunch of other stuff, but I still wonder how those hardcore otaku do it. Is there some sort of secret that I am not privy to? I know most of us are still poor starving college students or high schoolers still living with mummy and daddy, but even with my comfy pay check from Uncle Sam the weak dollar is making me weep. It kind of makes me worried about the future since the economic climate here just looks bleaker and bleaker given how the grand plan to get a house with my younger brother after college was scuttled when the housing bubble burst. Hopefully things will be better in a year or so, I’d much rather have a house of my own than have to move back in with my folks. Nothing wrong with having to move back in with your family given how the times are hard, but for me I want my own house some day instead of renting an apartment, mostly because I see it as a waste of money that delays a purchase of a home of my own. At least with the house I can make it a fortress of doom complete with death rays, nuclear missiles, and private hanger for a VF-25S with armor pack without having some irritable landlady chew my face off for knocking down a few walls.

My meager collection.

Quite why I my figures arrive the day I finish a project is still something that baffles me.

I really hate how when I graduated from high school the economy had tanked and once again it has tanked when I am about the get the hell out of college. Thankfully once I get out I still have my enlistment to provide some income and not be a total freeter when I move back home. If nothing else I might take a solicitation to the sand box if only to not see my parents in my utter disgrace over having everything not go as planned. I just hope there is some sort of bonus for re-enlisting when that time comes. Well for all the thunder clouds on the horizon maybe God does have a plan, once again a figure arrived at the same time I finished a painting project, that or this is one hell of a consistent coincidence. In any case my first two squads of Imperial Guard have been dubbed Fried Soba and Water in honor of having Mikuru completing the circle. Tsuruya’s fang I love that waitress outfit.

Fried Soba Squad.

Water Squad.

    Despite Haruhi’s grade C zettai ryouki, it still comes off at hot. Well, maybe that’s like a B, or so, but it’s no A or S. And a zettai ryouk-ified Mikuru I would like more than the sweltering maid uniform. Too Many Layers. You remember on Kannazuki no Miko 02 when the weird, phallic chain guy was like “I don’t like big boobs”? Yeah, what he said.

    I never really understood the appeal of purchasing figurines.

    The only anime-related product I’ve ever purchased was a small Gundam model kit based on the Epyon, nearly 10 years ago. This was back when my only outlet for my anime interests was the Toonami block on Cartoon Network (what a dark, desolate period that was). My cousin and I glued it together but neither of us had the motivation or attention span to go into detail and paint it.

    Speaking strictly for myself, it would be a bit embarassing if I were to bring a woman over on a date and she saw anime figures littering my residence.

    Don’t they cost a fair bit of pocket change? Then there’s shipping and handling. I’m a casual fan, and I live on a budget, so the tremendous dedication of otakus that purchase every product associated with an anime blows my mind. How do they find the money to support such a hobby?

    Anyway, back to my original point, what’s with the figurines bro?

    It’s great to Lt Malvin still getting much lurve :)

    I was wondering myself if it was the economic climate/inflationary forces that’s the root cause of my own ‘figure downturn’. After much deliberation, I concluded that current figure selection and quality (in turns of pose rather than manufacturing quality) have taken a hit. With GSC and MaxFac channeling considerable resources to Figma and nendroids, there aren’t that many worthy PVCs anymore. I have been looking fwd to every figure announcement for the last few months only to come away mostly disappointed.

    I know the most GAR Crusader is probably not going to take the bait but I suggest 2D bishoujo artbooks to fill that PVC vacuum.

    Here’s some of the best in the 2D realm to kick start your collection

    I must have a curse on or something, how come I always get to move or live in countries when their economy is waning?? (this does not make my otaku-self happy).

    I try and get figurines in cons, that way I don’t pay any shipping. I buy manga through barnes & nobles using membership and coupons. The only thing I can’t stop splurging on is doujinshi. I’m gonna live on cheap noodles for a while thanks to buying too much pr0n.

    But yeah I’m not gonna stop buying if I find some real good figurines (Gurren Lagann is gonna be my wallet-doom) or any good stuff. Thankfully I wasn’t very crazy to begin with about figurines unless they look exceptionally great (I have only two that I regret buying).

    BTW even though those HSnY figurines are one of the best out there (have a haruhi myself), they don’t match very well together. They should’ve made Mikuru and Tsuruyu in school uniforms too.

    @lelangir
    Well comrade at least the uniform designed by Tsuruya kept things manageable. Personally even I have a point where such things can be too big, but in the case of most of the SHnY heroines things tend to err on the acceptable and perky side.

    @Halcyon
    If your still embarrassed about anime at this point maybe it is time to take up a more manly hobby like guns, though truth be told even guns cost a fair bit. So far most of the interesting hobbies available seem to involve loads of cash. At any rate I see no point in being embarrassed as replacing them with a pimped out sniper rifle might get the same kind of reaction if not more negative all together. Moreover my current place is so small with a roommate in such an event I’d rather go somewhere else than lock out my roommate for a night, besides I don’t move that fast also my room mate is a honest bloke who pays rent on time and was the original leaser. I already told you my aversion towards renting a place to live so until I get a house of my own no lady friend will be visiting as long I can help it. Even then a woman who wishes to berate my interests and hobbies can basically fuck off, its fine if she can tolerate it but if I need to rid myself of my nerdy ways just for a date it isn’t worth it, IMO.

    I saved up a little money from each pay check so it is manageable I have actually had to curtail my spending given that gas is incredibly expensive these days. I have a nasty habit of being a completionist and thus I just had to complete the circle. Kind of explains why I play more XBox 360 games than PS3 ones, I am an achievement whore. My worship of Haruhi-sama compelled me to get them, and who am I to question the will of the Goddess?

    @Stripey
    I hear that. I just haven’t seen anything to pique my interests though maybe its just my miserly ways reasserting themselves. Hopefully when times get better the traditional PVC Figure market will have another renaissance. Lt. Malvin is quite happy with her new home and has adjusted well to her new environment. It helps that she now has some underlings to order around. ;)

    I am not partial to art books and my book shelf is already over flowing to the point where I had to store my Manga volumes in boxes. Besides I have been trying to save up for more Macross music CDs. Thanks for the recommendations though.

    @LDC
    What’s stopping you?

    @yaku
    Buying stuff at cons is a kind of hit or miss thing depending on how greedy the dealers get. I prefer flea markets but that is more of shot in a dark. You also have to consider other expenses associated with the con as well. although Tsuruya and Mikuru seem out of place I simplyt adore that out fit, it is aftger all megas good. ;)

    HAHA!! Well said Crusader!

    I’ve checked out the figurine reviews on Danny Choo’s site. Some of them look amazing, some of them look downright obscene. I shudder to think of the weird looks I’d get from family and friends if I had one of those.

    O-sho-sho, are those plastic Cadian’s I see? Why Crusader, I’d thought you’d be more of a Krieg or Steel Legion user. ;)

    Gee, those Cadians REALLY look out of place in front of the PVCs.

  9. Posted July 30, 2008 at 5:09 pm | Permalink

    @Halcyon
    I just avoid the more risque ones in favor of something more presentable.

    @Myssa Rei
    Steel Legion I have but I haven’t been able to scrape together much more than a plus sized platoon. Cadians however are easier to get and cheaper. Besides being the slow painter that I am I chose a carapace armor doctrine when modeling them so there would be less to paint. Besides they’re only there to soak up fire for the God Empress of Mankind. ;)

    It also helps that they fit more with those lovely Kasrkin Models.

    I can’t help but wonder. Putting girls aside, what do his roommate and his army buddies think when they see that the most GAR and manly Crusader actually has a collection of PVC bishoujos in his room? :p

    Crusader: Slow painter? Oh you have NO idea how slow I paint my marines…. As of last count, I still have a 5-man squad of Assault Terminators, a 5-man squad of converted ‘Sternguard’ Veterans, a 10-man squad of ‘vanilla’ CCW/BP Veterans (from the 4th edition codex) and a few metal HQs (a PA Chaplain, Librarian, and Techmarine, plus a Grey Knight Terminator that will be used as a TDA Librarian) too.

    And to think, I just pre-ordered the Assault on Black Reach so my friend and I can divide the Marines and Orkses in the boxed kit…. MORE models to paint!

    @Crusader: yep, buying in cons is a gamble and I wouldn’t recommend it to casual or beginner buyers. Half of the time I rather pay shipping and get the hard to get stuff.

    lol I think no otaku can resist maid-moe now (even less Mikuru maid mode). Except me, I rather have a butler; how come there are so few male figurines *shakes proverbial fist* thank god for Dante.

    btw the otaku secret of having more money? eat mainly vegetables (the cheapest ones). Or buy a bunch of cheap ramen noodles but I don’t recommend it, felt like crap afterwards.

    Maipeisu: will comment now ^^

    With Otakon 2008 looming over the horizon, I’ve been spun helplessly into fanboy-overdrive. Why, in the past two weeks alone, I ordered the above PVC Haruhi-sama figurine, three Captain Tylor LDs from an eBay seller, the entire Berserk DVD box from Amazon, and five volumes of Skip Beat… Oh and I also snagged the LOGH DVD box from eBay (I blame you for this, I’ll have you know.) I still plan to blow some more at the con, of course. Hours will be spent haggling the dealers and hunting for obscure titles.

    So how do otaku do it? You know, amass mountains of figurines and omake all associated with a single anime title (not counting the junk production companies like to stuff in their deluxe DVD boxsets)? Hell if I know. How do I do it? Well besides the fact that I dress like L and typically don’t go out to any social gatherings ever, for any reason, I’m gainfully employed and have a decent income for someone of my meager, degree-less stature. But I’m about to return to college full time, so I imagine I’ll also be pinching the pennies in the near future. The question is, at what point can a landsliding economy overpower an otaku’s moe-passion? Time will certainly tell.

    You can change both you know…

    @Ascaloth
    I make a point to visit theme and have stay the hell off my lawn. Actually they just see me in a rather spartan room with only a big LCD TV and every 7th Gen system hooked up to it. All of my anime stuff is with me at my college dorm. My room mate has his fair share of comic book action figures so its not that weird when your room mat is a nerd like yourself.

    @Myssa Rei
    Hehe, keep painting you’ll get there eventually…

    Given how fifth edition turned out I might be dusting off my hand me down Blood angels given how I painted most of them for my brother any way. It’s a very marine friendly meta-game right now. I don’t have much use for the Black Reach boxed set and already got my rule book so it’s not a must buy any way.

    @yaku
    Thanks for the insight hopefully in the future I will have time to attend one anime con.

    @Maipeisu
    You know comrade we can always loot and pillage… ;)

    Enjoy LOGH it was freaking epic.
