Sky Girls OVA

A pretty interesting anime OVA that I found while surfing the mountains of anime BT on animesuki.com. This seems to be an one-off project by J.C staff and I had heard rumors that it was simply 30 minutes of blatant fanservice (accurately, it should be 28 minutes). What I got was in fact, rather decent graphics, passable (even above average) mecha action, with super cute girls and well for the lovers of fanservice, they would definitely not be disappointed.

I personally found myself enjoying this episode quite much, since for a 30 minute OVA, it was good enough to conjure out some laughs, yet the action part of the series was not crap too. The animation was fine and the fighting was also not too shabby as well. Read on more for the full review.

Basic of story

Let me start off with the main guist of the background story. In the year 2080-2083, Man was living happily in Earth when there was an appearance of this eternal enemy called Worms, a mechnical cell cluster that suddenly appeared in the face of the Earth (no pun intended). Man was starting to be invaded by these creatures and were slowly swept away by a large scale.

Due to the fact that the human race might face extinction, the use of weapons of mass destruction was allowed and it seemed that these beings called the Worms were exterminated. However, the usage of these weapons had left many continents destroyed and land on Earth had been greatly reduced, with the military might of many countries destroyed by the weapons that were supposed to save them.

However, mankind continued to face more trouble as these beings known as the Worms started to resurface. The story hence revolved around our main three female leads from the Sonic Diver Unit, a squad of three mecha units that were trained in order to combat against these clusters of worms. In this episode, they were summoned in order to test their abilities to prove their strength to the superiors. Without spoiling you too much, the captain then charged straight into an enemy, hoping to use this opportunity to prove that the Sonic Diver Unit was worth supporting.

The battle that they have to fight is with a worm that is starfish-shaped and very huge. It even dwarfs a fricking battleship. With that, our heroines tried to prove their worth to the organization…

Characters

The three female characters are probably the draw of the series, since there is a very strong appearance of fanservice in this show. Hence, i will describe each of the characters in slightly more detail.

Ichijo Eika

The dark haired beauty is called Ichijo Eika and she is also the captain of this Sonic Diver Unit. She is the cool-headed and most capable overall in the squad and she seems to be using a mecha that concentrates on missile launching. She heads the operation and often directs the other two members in the squad.

Character-wise, she is cool and somewhat aloof, but she did show some weakness when she was dealing with the captain. I allocate it as the “girls always blush when facing guys” syndrome. However, she is probably the most eligible leader of this group and she is rather hot in her bikini. Cute factor: 7/10, Hot factor: 9/10

Sonomiya Karen

This shy looking lady is called Sonomiya Karen. She is the brains of the Sonic Diver Unit, with strong tactical sense and also an authority on mechanics. She is a genius with an IQ of 170 but seems to have problems when it comes to talking with guys, blushing deep red easily.

Character-wise, she seems to blush easily and her mecha seems to be of a long range shooting type. Hence, we already have two characters that have long-range mecha. She is also cute, but not exactly in the hot sense. Cute factor: 8/10, Hot factor: 5/10.

Sakurano Otoha

The last lady is called Sakurano Otoha. She seems rather boring to me, even though there is quite a bit of fanservice contributed by her. Very bashful and childlish with another male character, she is the unknown party of the squad as she does not have the talents that are blatantly obvious from the other two.

Her mecha is a close combat style, using a sword as her weapon. It seems that she is also a very strong swordswoman in real life. Cute factor: 7/10, Hot factor: 4/10.

Graphics and Impressions

The graphics look to be rather decent to me for an OVA and I have the feeling that it can be a 13 part series, as long as the fanservice does not go beyond this point. I mean, even though it is pretty strong fanservice, I could see just a little bit of plot, plus the mecha action in this series isn’t too bad. It can be a not too bad B grade anime series to watch between serious shows.

I kinda like it. Recommended to watch just to see if it’s to your liking.

This is perfect example of too blatant loli fanservice that I talked while ago, I watched maybe 5 minutes before deleting it.

hahaha, i think that this ova could still be saved. Yes, there is blatant loli fanservice, but there is at least a story of sorts. I still think it can be saved.

Well..it could redeem itself it they covered up those suits instead of exposing the girls like that.

  8. Posted September 4, 2006 at 5:46 am | Permalink

hahahahaha. =/ I think I did not even notice about the suits until you mention it. Perhaps, less fanservice can make it slightly more credible.

I do hope that they have a series for this too. The premise looks good at least.

Well I for one liked it regardless of the loli fanservice. I will wait and hope for a series to come from this with or without the service.

Well, yes, it is geared for mecha-musume lovers…

But no problems for loli fanbase too, methinks.

Anyway, we all agree that “practicality” and “effectivity” is not implemented here…

Not that I’m complaining, the three girls are wow ^_~

Wha, what the heck. the loli fanservice is the show’s best part >_> And the one with the 170 IQ is pretty damn moe.

hahahaha, yes, einhorn, can’t agree more.

A pity there’s no series for it. I was thinking that there was one T_T
