Ghostbusters…More than meets the eye. (Ghost Hunt Episode 7)

Hohohoh, do I sense a flirting bitch fight between Masako and Mai? It seems that my guess that Masako was in fact seriously affected at episode 5 after the incident in the doll house was mostly a lie. Now, with this current evidence, I swear that she is faking it, using her great acting skills as a celebrity to hook our Naru-chan with moe~ weakness, ala the ever damsel in distress trick.

Bwahahaha, omochikairi~~~ (Yes, I watched Higurashi)

Episode summary (Note: A bit too long ~_~ gomen)

The start of a new arc, Shibuya and Mai were entertaining a girl who said about her friends having strange symptoms of jumping around in class and eating sand after sitting in a strange seat. Shibuya simply told her to bring her friend to a hospital, much to Mai’s annoyance. The monk then came over in a rock outfit, with Mai unable to recognise him. It seemed that the monk job was more of a side job as he was from a family of monks but he was sick of being devoid of music. That was why his real job was a bassist in a band. He also came for the same reason, with additional news that four gals who sat in the same place had been hurt as their arms were trapped between a train door while the train moved.

The crux came when the principal of the school came over to ask for the same help. They then arrived to the school, with the life science (or social science) teacher guiding them along. Before the involved students were called in, the teacher told them how he had heard knocking on his window and when he pulled the blinds, there was just a hand tapping on it. The teacher also said that his family members heard it but took no concern of it unlike him.

The other students who came also had various experiences such as knocking sounds, disarranged items and shadows. One of the students also mentioned how there were spirits on the table where a strong hand mark appeared on the stomach of a student who was sitting on the desk, with a hole in her stomach causing her to go to the hospital (god, this ghost is scary ~_~). The next appearance was one of the girls, the second one that had her arm trapped in the train door. She did not notice anyone in the train as it was empty and she said she was lucky to escape with just a fracture and major bruises considering that the train stopped almost immediately.

Shibuya then noted that none of the cases were very serious but the frequency of cases in such a short term was exceptionally high. That was extremely strange as the rest of the ghost hunters were asked to come over. Shibuya deduced that it was impossible to find the main source of the spirits, since there were so many separate incidents and asked everyone to split up and try to find any clues. Masako also tried to flirt with Shibuya, by asking Shibuya to call her by her first name, earning Mai’s remark that she was shameless.

They then split up to check out the various incident areas, with no signs of anything special happening. The student that was the fan of the monk then came in to the HQ, where Mai was sitting there to wait for news. She then said about all the strange incidents, including a girl with ESP. As they returned, Mai informed the rest about it as it seemed that there was a gal by the name of Kasei who was able to bend spoons and eventually, it became a huge deal where the school told her to prove it. She did and eventually said that she was going to curse everyone to death after the teachers surrounded her, telling her not to mess around.

Shibuya and Mai then met up with the girl, who initially refused to talk as no one would believe her anyway. Shibuya said he did and bent a spoon almost immediately with ESP, breaking it eventually (btw, OMG). The girl then tried but she could not do it and Shibuya said that it was because her mind was way too disrupted, with the ability of an ESP user fluctuating with her moods due to the instability of energy. She then said it was impossible for her curse to really come true, even if the incidents only happened after her curse. As they returned to HQ, Shibuya told her not to say anything about his ESP powers.

They then returned to see everyone having no results, not even the chair that was sat by the four victims. As they left again to check, Mai fell asleep and had a dream sequence where Shibuya showed her the ghost lights lingering around the various classrooms.

Episode thoughts

ghosthunt7-3.jpg

Okkk, as said before in an animsuki thread, I got the biggest shock in my life when Shibuya happily broke the spoon using ESP. There, I was simply thinking that Shibuya was a narcissistic but extremely smart person with no true spiritual energy. I mean, he looks to be more of a scientific person and I never thought that the dreams that Mai had was possibly one of his powers, in order to communicate to Mai.

I thought it was just part of Mai’s imagination.

Seriously. It is because the dream like sequences of her with Shibuya feels more like fantasizing than anything else but considering the clear instructions given in the dream this time, it might be Shibuya entering her dream. Hmm, that will also mean that Shibuya clearly can detect spirits, as well as having the ability to do much more. The question now becomes: why the hell does he have to hide these skills for?

I do not understand that part but why then will he reveal it to Mai? Don’t tell me he likes Mai?

O M G. No way.

Anyway, I am not too sure yet what is the true cause of these incidents. The fact that they are loosely related after the curse of the girl meant that it might be possible that the reaction of her ESP with the curse had invoked some form of medium toward some of the residential spirits in the vicinity.

This hence creating that intense fluctuation of emotions required to activate such incidents. I am not too sure what I am saying here but I have a feeling that the curse is the catalyst for these events to happen.

The amount of ghost lights lingering around in the classrooms in the ending scene kind of confirms that notion, even though since it is a dream, I do not know the authenticity of the truth. This show often throws slight red herrings at the first episode of each arc to confuse.

The flirting of Masako amuses me and Mai being all blushing after having a “secret only with her” was just rather hilarious now. I used to feel that the blushing and all is rather annoying but it seems to be manageable, especially with Masako’s blatant flirting on Shibuya (read above).

So yea, enjoyable start up, with Mai’s various strange faces. Let’s see how this mystery unfolds, should we ?

Thanks for the write-up, there was a lot going on this ep and I missed most of the details from the conversations. There seems to be a particularly nasty undercurrent to this story, with the seriousness of the accidents taking GH in a different and more disturbing direction. The onibi (Will o’Wisps) at the end are particularly interesting – usually being lost spirits with unfinished business. Spooky. And Mai’s expressions are such fun, her trademark gasp and her jealous face in particular :D
