My Winter 06/07 Anime Selection

The anime schedule listing for the Winter 06/07 season has appeared on MOON PHASE already so after skimming through the upcoming animes, here are my 3 picks:

1) Ikkitousen Dragon Destiny

ikkitousen dragon destiny

Ikkitousen Dragon Destiny is the sequel of the original Ikkitousen anime series and it will be out in February 2007. I don’t really have any idea what is going to happen in this sequel but I’d hazard a guess and say lots of fanservice and fighting.

2) Hidamari Sketch

hidamari sketch

This anime coming out on 11th January 2007 is supposed to be some kind of cutesy slice of life anime. Normally cutesy animes are not my cup of tea but this Hidamari Sketch seems to be a cross between Azumanga and Yotsuba, and I love those 2 series’s so I might give this one the 3 episode test. I just hope its not toooooooo cutesy x_x

3) Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

gurren lagann

Break Through the Source of All Life“, this is the latest anime from Gainax! No exact date given but I think it will be coming out in January 2007. It’s a Gainax production so expect a wacky plot that may not make any sense. Since this is the one anime from my selection which was published widely, I actually have the backstory for it:

The tale begins deep under the ground, where humans have been living for hundreds of years. Young main character Simon’s job is to dig away the surrounding earth, to expand the perimeter of his subterranean village. One day while digging, he discovers a mysterious crystalline drill — the Core Drill.

The only person who understands him is another youth named Kamina, leader of a group of toughs who call themselves the Gurren Gang, determined to punch through the ceiling and see the (almost mythical) surface of the planet.

As fate would have it, they get to see the sun a lot faster than any of them probably expected, as the crust above suddenly shatters open, and out tumbles a giant, headless robot, which promptly begins destroying the village.

Simon and Kamina are quickly saved, however, by Yoko — a surface-dwelling girl who fell through the massive hole as well, brandishing unknowable weaponry and promptly deactivating the gigantic mecha. In the conflagration, Simon seems to have discovered the robot’s head, and upon climbing inside finds his Core Drill activates it…and for some reason, he knows exactly how to pilot it.

I think I’ll second Hidamari Sketch. I started looking at January calendar over the weekend and jotted a few down, I think 4-5.

Ikkitousen, didn’t see the first one, sooo…
And the GAINAX series atmospheric vibe feels a bit like Vandred, may check it out. Cooool ^^

Gurren Lagann should be huge fun *hopes* I’m not expecting anything as great as Die Buster, but I’m optimistic.

Sigh, It’s too early to tell but so far all on the list feel a bit to “otaku-appealing” for me. I guess the only one I think I want to see is Winter’s Tale.

nege: I remember watching the first season of Aquarion, it was quite boring. :/

Sonhex: I get a very strong Abenobashi vibe from the art of the Gainax anime. Maybe it will be like FLCL crossed with Abenobashi!

The Zee: You can see a more english list here http://2chan.us/wordpress/2006/12/03/winter-0607-schedule/
