"Naru-chan down!" – Ghost hunt episode 9

snapshot20061202211311-resi.jpg

So so, Naru-chan finally fell like a log (no pun intended)

Who is the person that is causing it? No idea at all but the fact that it breaks the module of 3 episodes per arc.

Read on for more details as usual at this under appreciated show.

Episode summary

With Masako sent to hospital after being shoved down the stairs by an invisible hand, the rumors have been spreading about Kasei’s cursing. Shibuya then said it was the culprit’s attempt to scare them off, with a curse laid on Masako too. Shibuya also said the situation seemed to be getting more vicious and they had a duty to find all the dolls as he asked the monk and the witch to find it, while Shibuya, Lin and Mai will find out about the relationship of the seats as well as the track and field team.

The witch and the monk found that Kasei was peeking at them while they were finding the dolls. Shibuya then interviewed one of the classmates. It seemed that every 15th of the month, everyone would change places, and that meant that someone had placed the doll during July 15 to September 14 (including holidays). As the girl who sat there had an accident on September 13, that meant that someone had placed the curse before that.

He also discovered that the girl openly criticized Kasei, saying that her ability to bend the spoon was fake. The student also complained to the biology teacher that protected Kasei, also because the teacher believed in such powers. It seemed that the teacher who got into a car accident was the adviser of the track and field team who denied such powers too. Shibuya then added only someone who had expertise in such curses or a spiritual user could do it perfectly and Mai said that Kasei’s unstable ability made it impossible for her to do it. Since everyone was related to Kasei, Shibuya noted that Kasei’s suspicion is even higher now but trusted Mai once again as he told her to help the others. We also discovered Lin was the person who knew about the puppets and created it in the earlier doll arc.

As they searched for the dolls, the biology teacher came, with the witch being critical of Kasei. However, Mai said she believed Kasei and the teacher said Kasei would be glad that someone believed her. Mai was continuing to find dolls when she heard a child crying behind the fence. As she climbed over, she realized one of the sewer holes was open as she climbed down to check it. However, just when she climbed it, Shibuya came over and it seemed that the “girl” was in fact a spirit that was dragging her down.

She struggled, with Shibuya just in time to hold her up. However, the ladder broke and she dragged Shibuya down to the bottom of the sewer. Mai was then worried as it was turning into night, with the spirits soon to haunt them. Mai was also annoyed that Shibuya was still nonchalant about the whole thing. He then did some magic tricks and spoke using his stomach strength (like how puppet masters do) to entertain her. However, the spirit came with a scythe, approaching him very close before Lin rescued them from the sewers. The spirit then disappeared with the presence of Lin.

Mai then realized she never suspected the child until now. As they went back to headquarters, the witch and the monk found all the tablets that were available (including Mai’s), only that their tablets were not found. In a way, they felt a bit insulted that they were not considered threats. As they continued to talk, Shibuya suddenly looked weak as he collapsed.

Thoughts

ghosthunt9-3.jpg

Ok. The whole show wants to blame Kasei but I think Kasei will be absolutely dumb if she did so much curses just because she had that hatred. Common sense tells you that if there is anyone in the school who had an immense hate to people who detest spiritual powers, Kasei will be the best foil to do things and not be detected. From the episode, we know that the person had targetted people who had not believed in the powers of Kasei.

That means that the person who cursed had to know that Kasei was clearly hated by these groups of people. The school teacher and the track and field people were clear enough to be known by the whole school. However, the criticism by the student who sat in the cursed seat was definitely more private than anything else. Hence, it must be someone in the classroom itself or someone who had heard it.

The fact that Shibuya said that the person who did the curse must have great expertise and well controlled spiritual powers narrowed it down to one person: the biology teacher. It is almost ridiculous for the show to throw in a character that has not appeared in this arc, hence in fact, I find her the most obvious choice to cause all this. Kasei clearly looked like she yearned for attention, but not to the extent that she had this buried hatred of these people. However, once again, I add that I suspect she knows the activities of whoever is doing it.

To add, Kasei had the look of someone who wanted to help, yet did not know how to at all. Mai’s voice in her mind disturbed me. What is that voice that kept saying that Kasei was not the victim? Is it something that is just a red herring or that Mai is in fact a spiritual medium person? Do note that Mai always has such spiritual contact that none of these people had, which means that she is either plain unlucky or that she in fact has a strong reception of spiritual energy kept in latent force.

Secondly, Lin doing the puppet thingy in the doll arc shocked me. I fully did not suspect that it was not Naru and the revelation that it was Lin who was the Onmyouji gave me a good twist on the head. That meant that Lin himself is also an able assistant in the spiritual realm, which seriously shows one thing: Naru is definitely a very powerful person. I mean, if you have such a good assistant that will protect you at all costs, that will mean that Naru has some really special abilities.

I personally think that Naru had fainted due to injuries. Considering the way they fell, it was possible that he was crushed by Mai since Mai’s hand dragged him down, meaning that there was a possibility that his left hand (which he held when Mai woke up in the sewer) was seriously injuried and that there was some shock that he was trying to hide in order to calm Mai down. That showed that he was not without emotions, just that he did not reveal it. I was also thinking of the reasoning that it was the culmination in the lack of sleep since the spirit had been haunting him that resulted in exhaustion as well.

That’s it for my thoughts, hope you enjoy my review and summary ^_^

Thanks for the summary Impz. Ah so it was Lin who was the Omnyouji and not Naru? That helps to flesh out Lin’s character a bit anyway, even if it does shed less light on Naru’s true powers now.

I thought the scene with Naru and Mai in the sewer quite touching; Naru using coin tricks to calm Mai down and take her mind off their predicament. I wonder if Naru was a bit of a magician (conjurer) in his past? Anyway Shame he was injured from the fall :( Damn these cliffhangers! :)

yep, the most funny thing is that he is really sweet to assure Mai, even though he is like so badly injured from the fall. Such a sweet man, isn’t he?

That said, it does flesh out Lin’s character considering that he hardly has more than 5 lines per episode. Good stuff there. =/

It was great to read your detailed description of the episode. When there are long bouts of dialogue (like the student being interviewed by Naru scene), I can only guess from the manga at what’s being discussed. I always look forward to coming here to read your explanation of what actually happened.

I think you’re on to something about Lin and Naru. You’ve got a point. Naru must be some kind of incredible to have someone as powerful as Lin working as his assistant.

…manga reader…cheater >_>…hahah, but actually, it’s good that u read the manga because i often take references slightly from your thoughts since it gives me a slightly clearer picture and when i re-watched the episode to do the summary, your manga thoughts came to my mind, making it easier for me to write.

That said, I feel that he must have quite a bit of psychic energy or something that can convince lin. Lin does not seem to be the type of guy that will happily protect Naru unless he feels that the person he protects is extremely important for a reason (not yaoi) or that he’s very powerful.

Considering omnyouji hold great power and influence themselves (serving shrines and peoples of distinction Emperors included) does make me wonder if Naru is something very special indeed. Well we know he is, of-course, but exactly what?

LKK: any hints in the manga?

The US-published manga hasn’t gone into Naru’s or Lin’s power much. I’ve heard bits and pieces of spoilers based on the CD dramas and the novel series, but nothing yet that I’m willing to take as fact. My understanding is that manga volume 10 to be released in Japan early 2007 is supposed to get into who and what Naru really is.

All I know for sure is that Naru is much more than he appears on the surface and that dream!Naru is more than a figment of Mai’s imagination.

Thinking about what I wrote, I realized that I lied a little when I said that the manga hasn’t gone into Naru’s or Lin’s power. Episode 10 should contain a conversation between Naru & Lin that my instincts scream “THIS IS IMPORTANT! REMEMBER THIS!” But whether my instincts are right, I don’t know. I have theories that I shall share once episode 10 airs. But I don’t want to spoil the episode by talking about them yet.

The Ghost Hunt novels are no longer in print in Japan. My understanding is that they’re really hard to find even in the online used book sites. Del Rey has expressed some interest in publishing an English-language version of the novels. But I don’t know how far along they got in terms of acquiring the license.

All the characters are very interesting in Ghost Hunt! That kept me going after the first story which was very predictable. I’m glad I stuck to it. Love this anime!! :) BTW, where do you download the animes with chinese subs? I usually wait for the English subs to be out, but I can’t wait! *tears hair*

    http://.bt.greedland.net. Here’s a good site for chinese subs anime. It’s really up-to-date.

And I agree, this anime is SO UNDERRATED. The manga is already a masterpiece, in my humble opinion, but the anime is just as good.

    Thanks for the excellent summaries.

hahaha, no problem, sam, i didn’t get it from there because that site is a bit troublesome. ^_^ Yes, it is so so underrated because i almost feel like i am blogging for myself to read sometimes, tee hee. ^+^

haahahaha, kaz, we are still speculating on that up to Episode 22, with no concrete answers as yet. However, one thing for sure is that the manga people have the answer. You might want to grab one of them.
