Kiss Kiss Fall in Love… With Ouran High School Host Club

An introduction, first of all~ Impz initially wanted me to introduce myself as “a green haired loli that impz recruited.” Well, I am neither a loli nor do I have green hair, but yes, I was recruited by him. I am a hyper and food-loving girl who Impz loves to torment, but that’s a whole other topic. This is my first time blogging anime and I’m still learning the ropes, but I hope I satisfy the readers somehow. For more about me, I guess go to the “About the Members” page. Now on to Ouran!

I think the first time I heard of “Ouran” was sometime in October, when an online friend showed me an image from the series. I was looking for an anime image that depicted a school group with boys and girls alike.

Me: Any suggestions?
Friend: How about Ouran? Here’s an image.

ouran.jpg

Me: They’re all guys, mang. -.-
Friend: LOL one’s a girl

I concluded it must be that cute character on the right (who turns out to be Honey) and just forgot about the whole thing. During those times, I was too preoccupied with work to even try watching anything, but salvation came in the form of the December holidays. I asked the almighty Impz for recommendations and Ouran was part of the list. So chop-chop, I got Ouran High School Host Club, not knowing that my fangirl mode will be awakened after long hibernation. I finished the series in 3 days and here I am to unleash the fangirlism I acquired… professionally, of course, as Impz puts it. ;D

The Plot

If put in simple terms, the plot is basically about tomboyish Haruhi Fujioka’s experience as part of Ouran Academy’s Host Club. The anime generally stayed faithful to Bisco Hatori’s shoujo manga except for a few instances, but it all worked out, in my opinion.

plot1.jpg

Looking very boyish, Haruhi stumbles upon the Third Music Room while looking for a place to study and is quite shocked to see 6 handsome (or cute, in Honey’s case) boys welcoming her: The Host Club. The members (except one, who keeps it to himself) mistake her for a guy and because of the outrageousness she encountered, she accidentally breaks a vase worth 8,000,000 yen. Forced by debt, Haruhi finds herself doing trivial chores for the club and eventually, being a host herself. The club members all eventually find out the truth about her gender, but they require her to keep up being a host to pay off her debt.

Reluctant and unenthusiastic at first, Haruhi soon finds herself forming bonds with the members and discovering that there is actually more to these wealthy and charming men.

The Characters

I have never found myself liking a barrage of characters that all come from one anime series, but Ouran is an exception. How can anyone not like the wonderfully hilarious characters that also have their own drama?

this is certainly one of my favourites, and as for a sequel, im pretty sure theres more manga material…not sure though. We’ll see…and hope

    >>I finished the series in 3 days

    WEAK!

For a show that’s finished its run, no time period over one day is excusable unless it has 60+ episodes.

*Claps* Not too long or boring at all.

I loved this show and its definetely one I’ve gone back and rewatched. The humour is great and never goes too far over the top.

I really love it when Honey goes all martial arts on people.

I definetely wouldn’t mind watching a second season.

@loli: Tsk tsk tsk, treat my female writers better, loli, you little meanie. That said, I watch all 26 episodes in 1 day. So ermm, *whistles*

That said, Ouran High Host club is an excellent show and I really enjoy the “father” antics of Tamaki or the totally nonchalant behavior of Haruhi. It is pretty amusing to say the very least and I really consider Ouran to be one of the top shows in 2006.

With decent comedy, likable characters that can rival Aria’s lovely girls, it is perhaps a must watch by all sense.

Are you a loli? If yes, when are we meeting up?

  6. Posted January 11, 2007 at 10:52 am | Permalink

    Oh, welcome aboard.

First off, if Trappy-tan really does something that makes you uncomfortable like forcing you to dye your hair green against your own will, you call me and I’ll give Trappy-tan a Zenkai Kiaidan. Hee hee! Ahem!

Anyway, uh, seeing that I’m still waiting for a few series, I’ll give this one a shot. A lot of people seemed to enjoy it. Plus, it’s been a while since I last saw an anime with Sakamoto Maaya-san in it.

@tj: Don’t stalk my female bloggers. Die.

@Bata: you make me sound like a darn pervert. I assure you that i am generally only very violent in real life and threaten to do a lot of violent stuff. that’s all.

Regarding the “wild” type –> when the Japanese use the term wild, they have a different meaning for it than most English-speakers do. For the Japanese, the word “wild” is a shortening of the word “wilderness”, as in: back to nature, animal instinct, knowing things the way animals do like on a gut level, a wilderness man who isn’t socialized, stuff like that. The wild types are often quiet, always watching, able to guess things based on some instinct that most other people don’t understand, and basically seem unfathomable to humans the way animals (like lions and tigers and bears, oh my!) are unknowable to humans.

Welcome to the animeblogging scene! That said, I’ll sum up my thoughts and declare this an excellent primer to the world of Ouran — which I sadly admit I still have yet to finish up.

I think this goes without saying, but I look forward to your upcoming posts! :3

Wonderful job.. I finished Ouran sometime ago, and this really bring smile to my face.. =D

Aezie? Is that original or an imitation from “Impzie”? =P

Ah, Ouran High School Host Club. It could have been a great series, weren’t for the fact that it kept milking on the same jokes and concepts, in my opinion. Especially Honey got on my nerves, and it’s ironic that Mori, my favourite character never even got more than half an episode dedicated to him.

Welcome. If you ever wanna leave Impz, come over to my place… ahem. Either way, Ouran’s one of my favorites and if I could’ve watched it all in three days rather than… [insert many weeks], I lost count, I’d do it in a heartbeat. Hell, I’d watch it all in a day if I had a batch. But I digress, good beginning review. You’ll eventually get used to the business.

Oh, and Last Alliance is great. I thank Shissou for getting me into them. I’ve heard ALOT of j-rock/pop in my life, but they made their way to the top of my list.

Waai, welcome to the female blog scene! -just pictured Tamaki and the Ouran crew saying ‘irrasshai mase’- xD God, I have to try not to lose it and fangirl here…again.

I LOVE Ouran. I never got tired of the jokes. I am continuously watching this series so I won’t go through another Ouran withdrawal like I did when I first watched Yamato xD Twincest FTW!

Impzie: I don’t think you are. I just want to make sure that you’re doing the right thing. Yeah and whatever you do, you’re doing it with taste or something. I don’t know. My mind’s so not in the thinking state right now. XD

@ Os: I will definitely take up your offer if I am somehow getting busy to the extent that I have to abandon the boat that is this blog. I still remember when I first started up, a few anime blogs actually rejected me as a writer after i sent them some of my samples. Time does fly once I had my own blog, but that will be a story that i will tell if i do hit 6 months in this blog. or that blog.

@babypris: It’s definitely not me because i do not have the technical knowledge to post as aezie…:) it’s original, ahaha~

Hey, great review! I love Ouran High School Host Club, it being one of the few comedy/romance shoujo shows that I actually watch and enjoyed. And I keep falling over laughing in many places. Also love your character summaries. :D Looking forward to more reviews!

Eep… My net died at home so everyone please forgive me for not replying sooner x_X Anyway, on to the replies~!

@loli: Nooooo you have to cut me some slack DX It was from the 24th-26th and there were parties everywhere x.x

@Bata: Haha I’ll keep that in mind xD -eyes Trappy-san- But yes, do watch Ouran. I think you’ll enjoy it as much as I did and continue to do so =D

@LKK: Thanks for clarifying that! n_nV

@Spirit: Whoamg thanks =DDD That motivates me, really~

@babypris: Haha “Aezie” came from aezirka, which is a name I used in a forum where I met Impz, jooo, and alkanphel almost a year ago. Someone gave me Aezie as a nick though I’ve forgotten who @_@

@psgels: I agree about Mori not having one real ep dedicated to him. I wish they could have inserted a little more drama to his character that could have been developed into an ep or two.

@Os: XD I won’t leave Jan… yet. Jk Jan :p But yes, the ED is really great and Last Alliance really did a great job =)

@Whispered: -fangirl scream- Weee another Ouran fangirl! Yes yes, I love their jokes too! Rewatchability ftw!

@Briar: Thanks for the comment n_n

To everyone~ Thanks for being so gracious and nice =D This is so much better than I expected, really. I actually had fun writing this review and I wanna thank Trappy for letting me rave about it, as well as alkan for fixing up some technical stuff. I suck at technical so ehehehe x_X
