I miss Ana Coppola.
My favorite loli is back, and she’s back with a vengeance!
Episode summary

Nobue woke up at 1230 pm, feeling the nice afternoon breeze. Nobue was called up for an interview but Miu called in at the last moment before Nobue hung up the phone to scream “How Gah!”. Miu described it as a good impression, showing that it was energetic. Chika then arrived and Miu had drawn a bullseye on her forehead. When she asked why Nobue had a queer look, they said it was nothing. Ana and Matsuri also arrived, but was kept quiet by the other two girls.
As they went out the door, Chika left and Miu started to countdown from three as a missile launch. Ana and Matsuri crouched down in fear, but nothing happened when she finished counting. She then pointed at Matsuri, calling her the second missile launch. Chika came back to rush them, with the four having rather bemused looks. In class, Miu was asked to do a question but she asked the teacher to press her button (the bullseye). As the teacher pressed it, Miu closed her eyes and opened again, saying that the answer was four. Probably. Then she said five before saying what the hell was 1/3. Of course, she got kicked out of class. Miu then texted Chika when she was out of the class that she was about to sneeze as she sneezed a few seconds later.
At the station, Nobue tried to fill up her tank exactly at 400 yen but exceeded, saying how she hurt her own purse. At class 5-2, Ana was caught sleeping by the teacher. Matsuri told the teacher not to wake her up and the teacher once again kicked the boy out. Nobue went for the interview but the interviewer saw that her resume was filled up with rubbish (by Miu). Nobue rushed to the school to “thank” Miu. At lunch, Ana gave her bread to Matsuri, saying that curry must be eaten with rice since there was already curry buns for it. As she spoke very loud, everyone realized that she knew Japanese. The classmates said it was not surprising since Ana was here in Japan for a while.
She explained that she was a true blue Englishman and she should not be mistaken as those fake foreigners who could speak fluent Japanese. However, she used a really deep proverb in her explanation and impressed the class instead. In class 6-2, Miu asked Chika to press her button but it was a trick to steal her bun. As she attempted to distract Chika, Chika stole her bun instead. Miu received a text message from Nobue as she arrived, only to see Nobue in a tigress mode. Miu went down fast and furious and asked “why!”.

On the way home, Matsuri told Ana that she could finally speak Japanese in class. As they passed by a sweet store, she said it was Peach Blossom Land. It was to trick Chika to buying her things since Miu had no cash. Miu also threatened not to let Chika copy her work when it was her usually doing it. As Chika left, Miu turned her attention to Ana and found that Ana had a stack of 1000 yen notes. She asked if she could be Ana’s slave and Ana agreed. As they entered the shop, they bought a lot of stuff, with the old uncle wanting to press Miu’s button. However, Miu ran away before he could do it.
At home, Nobue was reading some post-modern wedding comics. Miu asked a quiz question to the other three girls, where there were ten passengers, three went down in one station, one went up and six went up in another. How many people were there? Chika said it was 15 since the bus driver was a person but Miu said it was 14 because one of the passengers could not be regarded as a human. Chika went out to have some coffee but her cigarette butt went into her drink. Back at home, they were finding out the meaning of peach blossom land, only to find out that it meant utopia. When they found what was utopia, it said “peach blossom land”.
They discussed about the meaning of their names. Chika’s (

YAY! They are back!
Hubby-sama introduced me to this and I absolutely loved it. They are just so damn adorable although I could quite honestly throttle Miu sometimes, I don’t know how Nobue restrains herself.
Maybe because she’s too busy fangirling over how cute Ana is. Actually this show is how hubby-sama got me to agree to the name Ana if we end up having a girl. I originally didn’t like it, but he said you can pronounce it how you would back home in England like Ana from Strawberry Marshmellow. I thought on it and it brought cuteness to mind and I agreed.
I totally adore Chika though, I just want to hug her she’s so damn cute!
Ah heck they are all cute.
I still think my favourite Matsuri moment is when Nobue has her say Nyah!
^-^
Indeed – you should listen to the version where they’ve got the actress commentaries.
And somehow, Miu and Ana ended up cuter this time around…
Incidentally, some of the stuff (the sleeping bits, primarily) were taken out of the manga.. but some I don’t recognize, perhaps because nobody’s doing any more scanlations for IchiMashi. And still, even as they’ve recycled some jokes (the old man, Miu getting flattened after the failed interview, Nobue using her ‘fake Genki Voice’ on others to make herself sound like a GOOD girl)… they’ve put in a few others which aren’t there, or weren’t there in the first four volumes (Ana finally blowing her cover as an ‘ignorant foreigner’, Miu annoying everyone with the namebook trawling).
But still – this was a great little OVA – and if you hear the VA commentaries at specific scenes, it only gets better.
DJ: Regarding your Matsuri moment – I have but one thing to say to you.
“Oyaji”.
@Haesslich, LOL!! I couldn’t help it, she was just so damn cute!
When my husband first showed me this I was like ah, whatever, but all it took was the opening song for me to be squealing about how damn cute they were. And so like Nobue I became hooked on the cuteness.
They actually end up cuter? Oh kami.
@DJ: Ana is my favorite character in Ichigo Mashimaro because she is clearly very innocent, yet she always tries to cover up her great ability at Japanese. It’s always a good joke plus the fact that my other favorite character, Miu is always the trigger to cause Ana to be angry. Ana is so cute even when she’s angry!
@Has: I noticed that they recycled some of the jokes, but I loved them nevertheless. A waste I do not understand Japanese, or I believe I will appreciate it even more. And that part of your favorite moment, DJ, I agree with Has.
“H-Oyaji”.
Also, about Nobue… maybe I’m just being a dirty old man myself, but is it just me or does it look like she got… ‘bigger’ in the eyecatches?
……………I never notice that.
I think you are being a H-oyaji as well. Tsk tsk tsk.
Um, at least Nobue’s LEGAL, so I’m not a lolicon like yourself.
And Stripey – heaven help Stripey if he sees that bathroom scene…
But she looks bigger than she did in the beach episode, way back when. Kinda hard to miss, especially in the bath when they ‘linger’ on that area for a few seconds. Still, I’m hoping someone subs the dual-audio track version, so we can see both the episode, as well as Nabatame-sama and Noto-sama’s comments especially when certain things happen (like that old man showing up in the candy store).
I think its impossible not to think of them as cute ^-^
And I so share your affinity for Ana when she’s angry Impz.
Hmm I think of myself as less of a perverted old man and more as a maternal OMG they are adorable.
Especially considering if we have a girl there’s a good chance with our combined genes she could end up looking like a little Ana ^-^. Hubby is blonde haired and blue eyed and I know I carry the genes for it, since my father is blonde haired and blue eyed.
Although my brunette hair and brown eyes may yet prove to be dominant, as might my olive tone skin.
Ah, but the thing is that Matsuri’s ALWAYS cute, as is Ana – especially when she was trying (and failing) to speak English while wearing that Gothic-Lolita inspired sundress. The whole ‘dressing Matsuri up as a catgirl’ thing… well, that’s more an oyaji-style fetish/like in my books.
Haess, yes the dressing her up did actually make me raise my eyebrows a little bit. I was questioning Nobue’s motives a little! ^-^
Go subgroups!
I’m even more anxiously awaiting a sub for this then I was for 5cm/s earlier this week.
/Me needs moar Ana. :p
I always hated Ana for being such a retard. I’m afraid she was one of the few major reasons which ruined the experience for me.
Pete: Watch out for the roving gangs of Ana-tards, waiting to beat you within an inch of your life.
I swear, the girl’s got almost as many fans as Desu… but unlike Desu, she’s actually cute. Even if she has her ‘retard’ moments, as you’ve noted – which is part of the joke. That she CAN be that stupid about some things, while trying to play the part of the gaijin… and failing.
At least we get to see the back of her mom’s head, so we know where her looks are from…
DJ: Yes, that’s why I called you an oyaji, especially after Nobue started blushing and getting the ‘Strike!’ noises after seeing the ‘-nyaaa’ bits.
DID SOMEONE SAY ANA IS A RETARD!!!!
*Ana-tard fandom comes out and wants to kill PETE!*
Honestly, in a less serious manner, I can fully understand why people dislike Ana, simply because she can be a really big retard. That is perhaps a joke about foreigners being ignorant overplayed and rubbing you the wrong way.
Well, I guess that’s probably why anime is such a subjective issue, where one’s love can be another’s poison.
Now that I remember, anyone felt that Nobue’s sweet little voice for the interview session is particularly disturbing? Also, how about Miu’s “Arr, the conclusion of life is so sad” when she remarked about the loop of meanings while searching for “Idealistic island” and “utopia”?
Question! Does one need to watch the television series before watching this? The only “Ichigo Mashimaro” experience I had was reading the first book (in Japanese by the way).
hahahah, i don’t think you need to in order to watch the ova. Jump ahead, bata, jump ahead.
Embrace Ichigo Mashimaro!
Impz: That ’sweet’ voice is the one from the first episode, or one like it.. and yes, knowing her personality, that does NOT fit her at all – which I suspect is part of the joke. Especially after all the junk Miu put into her resume/job application.
And bata – you’ll be fine. They DID take some of this (the ‘asleep in class’ joke) from one of the 4-komas in Volume 3 or 4, IIRC… but outside of that, you don’t need any of the earlier eps to enjoy the characters for the most part.
