Let’s have an exercise in futility: ranking the Espada. There have been many number theories and mathematical sequences generated in order to create a logical order to the ranking of the Espada but so far none have been correct. Because I’m bored, let’s talk about what you think the ranking of the Espada might be. There might be spoilers below so don’t click if you’re not caught up with the manga. I have included a picture of the infamous tea party table seating for reference (click for bigger).
Here’s my personal prediction on the ranking:
1. Ulquiorra
2. Nnoitra
3. Stark
4. Old Espada
5. Halibel
6. Grimmjow
7. Zommari
8. Szayelaporro
9. Aaroniero
10. Yammy
Bolded names are the confirmed rankings by manga. All the rest are based on gut feeling with no complicated number sequences or formulas, except for Noitora – I think he is #2 based on what he told Telsa. He thinks he’s the strongest Espada but yet he’s not recognised as the strongest, so this probably means he’s #2. And I think Ulquiorra is #1 because he’s so damn intelligent and analytical, and he is Aizen’s pet as well.
This is the current actual rankings as revealed by the manga, together with my new predictions:

1940 Comments
If we take it for what it is….
R=Our right
L=Our left
F=facing
Top 4 weakest to strongest: R, L, R, F, L, R, F
We notice two things:
1. The second facing fell one space closer than it should have.
2. The Left/Right pattern switched.
So following these observations means the top 3 are R, F, L
Or in other words…

2. Barragan
1. Stark
I dunno. It’s a good observation, but for now it’s too open for me to believe in.
The above statement coincides with my palace theory though.
Sorry, actually the top 3 would be like R, F, F. But there is no fourth facing one and I would assume the left/right shift remains constant.

So it seems nobody says it but Barragan will be the last Espada to fight.So generally the best fight last plus here we could have a parallel.
I mean the first Espada to fight was Yammy and he’s 10; so now we got the 10th and last Espada to fight is Barragan who can be the Primera ?

It doesn’t make sense to have Barragan as the Primera Espada. If we were to go by the “old age” theorem, it doesn’t apply, because Lillinette herself said “I’m an Arrancar, I have no age.”
What I’m saying is Stark could have died as a human 2000 years ago at the age of (I think he appears to look) 30ish, and his physical appearance would not age because he’s an Arrancar/was a Hollow.
Barragan could have died 5 years ago at the age of 70ish, and again, his physical appearance does not determine his age.
For all we know, Lillinette is older than Barragan.
The most logical order of ranking, based on interactions is:
Stark
Barragan
Hallibel
When they first were called to battle, Barragan snapped at Hallibel, telling her that she was disrespecting Aizen. Hallibel has only talked back to Nnoitra, because he was below her, and based on her personality, she has respect for Aizen’s decision of ranking.
Barragan asked Stark if he could take control…well more like “I’m in charge now, okies?” and Stark didn’t seem to care, indicating that Stark probably has more authority over Barragan, but simply doesn’t exert it.
More evidence to reject the claim that Barragan is Primera: the mere fact that his Fraccion did NOT brag that Barragan was the top Espada, if he were the top Espada, they would be sure to rub the fact into their opponents.
And to Sonic: the basis that Barragan’s name was last to be revealed is virtually meaningless. Zommari’s name was the second-to-last to be revealed…honestly, I don’t think that Kubo would give away names in any order. Ex: we still don’t know Yammi’s last name.
All I’m trying to say is that it’s too early to give a definite answer to which Espada is what number, but there are lots of details that logically point to certain results.
What is logical especially when we’re talking about the ranking and Stark ?
The thing is, Aizen’s ranking of Arrancar and Espada is also based on a system of authority.
Barragan exerted authority over Hallibel, while he also asked for permission to take control from Stark.
There is more evidence to back up Stark as having a higher rank than Barragan.
Where did Barragan ask for permission ?
Maybe I totally could have a bad english but I never saw it.Plus, I don’t read japanese, so I don’t really know if Barragan use some kind of polite word or something.
Just depending about the fans interpretationand the translation, where some see permission others see a threat.I think at the end we all can’t be agree with what happened there.

I speak and read Japanese. So I can vouch that the translation is accurate.
Barragan looks at Stark when he announces that he’s going to take control. And in addition, in the original hiragana he does NOT use any honorific because he made it more like “I’m taking control, okay?”
Barragan’s arrogance would rub off on his Fraccion, and it did, but more importantly, they would have made sure that we knew that Barragan was the top Espada, along the lines of “even if I am destroyed, my lord and king Barragan-sama will destroy you.”
Hallibel clearly does not speak up after Barragan claims control, and Stark responds with “it doesn’t matter to me” (more literal translation). Hallibel talks rarely, and only with significance and respect. She backed down at Barragan’s remark.
Stark’s character is pretty much a trope: the lazy man who secretly could destroy everything. It’s pretty evident.

Kubo had already gave us the ranks in 315 already (sly fucker). Yep it’s Stark as Primera, Barragan as Segundo and Halibel as Tercera. In the chapter (339) Halibel reveals her rank first, then Stark. Next chapter is the Ichigo x Ulqui fight

Barragan is No.2, his mark hasn’t been revealed yet… Hallibel is No.3, her mark is on her right boob, She also revealed her face, it is completely covered by her hollow mask below her eyes and the mask extends all the way to her chest.

I’ve got to say that it’s nice to finally have confirmation that Stark is Primera Espada. I figured they would all be revealed in a single chapter, though it all happened a chapter earlier than I anticipated (I thought Kubo would have switched fights at chapter 340). Still, I’m happy that things turned out the way they did. Halibel’s mask is actually pretty cool, and it will be good to have a change of pace with the Ulquiorra fight. In closing, it was fun debating about the rankings on this page for nearly two years — I’ll miss that.

I think Halibel is the 3rd because, logically, she should be Nel’s replacement. Nel was the 3rd espada.
That leaves Stark to be the 2nd.

hey, barragan’s tatoo has not been shown yet,so we should not jump to conclusions that he is second. He may be ranked zero and wonderwice is second.
ulquiorra: Sorry, but I think it’s a HUGE leap of faith to assume Barragan is ranked anything but second. By process of elimination, he must be the second Espada. The only other tattoos that we haven’t seen are seven and eight, so unless Zommari or Szayel are secretly five or six ranks higher than they previously let on, Barragan’s rank is solidified. And having a zero Espada is illogical — there is no rational basis to insinuate that a zero Espada exists.

Agreed on Barragan being number 2 of course. Although I do believe it is not illogical to suppose that there may be a Cero/Zero Espada. Kubo has confirmed that a Zero squad exists in the TBTP arc, so why not a Zero Espada as parallel?
I like to think the reason Barragan has not revealed his tattoo is because he isn’t Primera. He’s embarrassed

Barragan is obviously number two, Aizen called the Espada to the meeting.
Wonderwice is considered Espada-level by SS standards, but that doesn’t mean he IS and Espada.
For instance, the Arrancar that would be considered “number 11″ might be at Espada level, but because he or she has 10 others ahead of them means that sadly, they cannot be an Espada until someone higher up kicks the bucket.
Or is killed by Ichigo.
