Awwww, so cuteeee~ Using tears as a moe attack has been the old ode. Using a cute character to do it? Priceless.

So, in accordance with the dedication post, I have embarked onto the road of no return, with this post where I will use all my expertise into the loli genre, one that is exciting and cute. I hope that this post will give a better outlook into what makes a successful loli show. The powers combined in this post will make the lolicon go crazy with salivation, and normal anime fans to have a grudging love of this genre. I will bring forth the power of greatness, the power of moe, the power of forbidden interest and many other wonders of this genre to convince and improve the establishment of an important genre in anime history.

Delve into the world of lolis, and the construction of a show that is much deeper than you expect. Might God bless your insanity and pray hard for salvation because it will be a dark world beyond this spot. Venture forth like a warrior going to war or be a wimp and not click more.

1st trick – Have nicely animated lolis

lolikyonsister.jpg
Two hot babes surrounding a loli is always the smartest way. Slip in the babes and the loli will be apparent for all.

It is superficial but lolis have to be cute graphically. Just like all good food and drinks, all lolis also have a certain grading. For e.g. Mamoru’s sister is perhaps a grade C, not a good loli by any measure. Hazuki is definitely an A grade by any measure of loli love for her neko mimi vampire look and Kyon’s sister for the lack of a better meme, is grade S (I leave you to think what S stands for).

In my opinion, Kyoto Animation has definitely done very well in this criteria, with the crazily good animated Kyon’s sister, or the crazily cute Wife material in loli version Sayuri or the rabbit ears wearing Mai and even the AyuAyu. They have all been considered by lolicons to be lolis of the highest order. What does this tell you about this category? Simple, we are all superficial creatures!

It’s always a great show when the lolis are given free reign in terms of their appearance to strike fear and happiness within the hearts of the would-be viewer/convert to lolicon. A clear, crisp and nice character design will always be the most important thing for any anime, and it’s no different with the lolis. Just look at Kamichama-Karin and Saint October. Even though both orientates toward the younger audience, one works and one doesn’t in this trick.

Why? Karin is simply designed better graphically compared to Kotono. Hell, Kotono even has various fetishes for the all encompassing meido, neko mimi and goth loli for good measure. She even wears spectacles for a meganekko look. All this is fruitless without graphics.

It goes back to the budget and to the really cliche term, “No budget, no good loli”.

2nd trick – Innocent settings, innocent actions but suspicious overtones (Read: fanservice)

8c667acc48029d535ba85c4f366.jpg
Innocent or guilty? I lap them all.

This is absolutely very important. The best example must be Ichigo Mashimaro, who can turn anyone into a lolicon within seconds. It is in the most innocent context of four different middle school girls doing innocent actions such as playing around in some random funny situations. In fact, it is merely cuteness when Ana Coppola and Matsuri wears cute rabbit ears and neko mimi respectively. Nothing seems explicitly loli and it just feels like a normal slice of life series with the cute factor.

Another anime is the tradition of Nanoha, from the first Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha, then to As and now StrikerS. Fate and Nanoha are great friends, with a great friendship that cannot be belittled. They do everything together, they even stay in the same room with merely a shirt and without their pants during a long night of missions, albeit them no longer being lolis. They also bathe together and enjoy little time that they can spend with each other.

Both scenarios sound innocent enough until you realize that rabbit and neko mimi ears are clearly fetishes that are shown by various otakus in the form of deviation. It is always the subtle loli fanservice that wins it for the loli. Throw an obvious one and people will baulk at it but throw one that is in an innocent context and they will lap it up as utter genius.

It’s the same with loli shows. Make the show as innocent as you probably can, but always make sure that there’s enough fanservice to make the lolicon happy. The subtle fanservice allows imagination, making the lolicon create the scenes in his head. Something like Ikkotousen just becomes a total joke, even if Zhuge Liang is a rather hot loli.

It’s all the fetishes and context that is important.

3rd trick – Construct a plot with the weakly body of a loli.

ichigomashimarololi.jpg
How many of those delicious figures of lolis can you find in this picture?

If we want a good figure, we can always go for real women. A true lolicon knows the delight of a delicious flat chest. It’s more like the forbidden Pandora’s box that has opened quietly without anyone realizing. The biological body of a loli, especially making in a successful loli show, requires that slim and small figure shivering in order for anyone to care for them. That is why a plot surrounding that very essence of a loli is very important.

If you have a huge breasted woman crying, you will just think it as normal. If you see a loli crying pitifully (especially if she’s higher than B grade), your heart will just soften and it’s often the key point to see if the pitiful sight of a loli (small and vulnerable) can shift the momentum of the series. The plight of Rimone in Simoun when she disappears, the death of Gretel in Black Lagoon, IIya’s fate after being broken in Fate/Stay Night and Rika’s depressing cycle of death in Higurashi are some examples of how anything else will never work.

It is the powerful figure of the loli that will evoke you into the emotional protection and make the plot way better than it can ever be. This is a sheer integration of plot of the highest order, one where the loli takes center stage smoothly and makes us feel for that. When a show does that, it already has won over its viewers. I am sure that most anime viewers are not made of stone and granite, and any loli dying or feeling depressed will soften your heart, and also your attention.

Get some tissues, and I will not ask what you use it for when a teary scene comes.

4th trick – Make them call onii-chan!

rr_271.jpg
Will Primula become such a definitive loli for all other lolis to follow without Rin? I wonder.

You have heard this before that “Behind a successful man is a woman”. Now, I tell you that it is also important the other way. Behind every successful loli is a good onii-chan. If anything, the beautiful relationship of a loli with an onii-chan is one of the most forbidden yet sweetest story that can be given to any loli. If the loli is a silent like the goddess Primula, JUST like a certain fan of her of Stripey’s fame, you should know that it does not really matter whether if the onii-chan seriously sucks. We often think too much in the central theme of the loli, and forget that the side characters, be it annoying, are also important to exhibit the strengths of the great loli!

The point is that for any successful loli show, the onii-chan must be around. However, this can also be an exception, as we can tell from Ichigo Mashimaro, though considering that Nobue is like an ero jiji, she can effectively be considered more as an onii-chan too. So in other words, it’s a definite must in terms of portraying any lolis in a good light. Trust me on this, I mean who the hell remembers those onii-chans other than the fact that they are fricking annoyed, wimpy and all that.

The onii-chan calling part also means that the voice acting has to be spot down in the alluring, sweet, cute and charming factor. Without these four factors, the call of the ONIIIII-CHAN will never materialize into the great fandom of lolis. Lolicons have great standards.

We only remember the lolis, and of course if they are green haired, even better.

5th trick – Mahou Transformation!

sakurabanzai.jpg
Sakura, the mother of mahou shoujo lolis

I have found that most magical shows with lolis tend to be really great hits. From the godmother of all that made mahou shoujo loli genre famous in Cardcaptor Sakura, and other shows such as Uta Kata, Kamichama Karin, Pretty Cure, Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha and Full Moon wo Sagashite all make use of this genre to couple with the loli genre to use it to the best effect. So what makes this mahou transformation so alluring? It’s the dress changing.

As quoted from Maestro, our honcho of animeblogger.net, he spoke.

…the one where her clothes came off first, then a twirl and her undies come off, then the outfit starts forming

That by the way, is describing about Uta Kata. In essence, he has represented what turns lolicons most when there is an instance of blurry nudity in the figures of the lolis, giving that sense of security that it’s not at all nudity, yet it is. It is the same concept as the hidden theory created by a certain lolicon, who says that it’s always the unseen that makes it hot, and not the seen parts. How true for anything at all. There needs to be no more explanation because Maestro’s quote captured the very crux of the matter.

In summary, I do acknowledge that there are many other points that will make a loli show successful, but these are the five that I believe will make any loli show successful. Make good graphics, innocent scenes with fanservice, succesful climax of the loli (not that kind, pervert), a good side character that is onii-chan enough and of course, add some transformation scenes to make any lolicon nosebleed.

Do you agree with my analysis or believe that other factors should be ahead of what I have described?
