Enemy of the State: How Hideaki Anno is trying to destroy America and the West Part I

t_1001321.jpg
Here we can see Hideaki Anno at a right wing rally, but most importantly we have learned that his re-makes of EVA are in their final stages of completion. Many Bothans died to bring us this information.

So after being laid low by a secondary infection for the past week I am finally able to sit down and type without blacking out every two hours with drug induced hallucinations about video games. During my infection forced fast that lost me ten pounds in three days I read a post about an interview with the “Great Hideaki Anno.” The post can be found here and the blogger, who is studying to be a man of the cloth, is giving this article a more serious treatment. Join him if you have time. However since my ID is Crusader and hence spread faith through fire and sword, rather than the pulpit, and as such this is going to be mean, uncivilized, rude, crude, and to put it simply a call to arms against this old fart who dares to slight the Power of the West.

If Lupus has a problem with this go flock to his banner in due time, and make haste, for bullets travel fast. (Lastly if it didn’t dawn on you yet this is largely sarcastic and essentially a bugger off to Anno and his anti-American, possibly anti-foreign, comments. I don’t give a hoot what you think of EVA and that is NOT the point of this declaration)

EDIT: This is a drug induced rant that has much a do about nothing. At the time of writing I was eating out of straw because of a wisdom tooth removal gone very bad. I was taking clindamycin, amitripline, naproxen, and vicoden. Suffice to I was very irritable and had much anger and chemicals in me. So this is the end result. I am very sorry if anyone thinks that I am being serious about much of this. So if you don’t wish to read an angry rant please don’t Impz will return with his regular gushing for lolis in a few hours, and I will hopefully be sane. Again please don’t read if you don’t like nihilistic rants. You have been warned.

Here are the relevant passages that I was handed, as for the rest of it…It was burned as a work of heresy…(original posts can be found here and here as well)

This is a very sick man he even gets off on the cheap upholstery. The man said touch, not fondle and can that part be any more phallic?

III
Neon Genesis Evangelion

T he most influential Japanese cultural product of the last decade is an animated cartoon series called Neon Genesis Evangelion, originally broadcast on national television during 1995 and 1996; it has shaped the psyches of Japanese under 40 like nothing in recent Western cultural experience except perhaps the Beatles and the first Star Wars movies. The series, produced by a collective called Gainax and directed by the cult animator Hideaki Anno, is a dark, fractured narrative of the postapocalyptic adventures of four badly damaged young kids who join with powerful new technologies to save what remains of the Earth from the Angels, 17 heavenly immortals who spread terror and destruction and seek to bring about the end of humankind.

Distinguished less by the quality of its animation than by its dark subject matter, nonlinear storytelling, and heavy, depressive stoner vibe, the series is regularly praised by animators, novelists, cultural theorists, and visual artists as the flower of Japanese pop culture. It has been credited with defining gender roles, influencing attitudes toward the environment, and spawning the madly obsessive—and immensely profitable—Neon Genesis Evangelion to a film producer that is collaborating with Weta Workshop, a company whose principals include Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson. I am particularly interested in talking to Anno about the character of Rei, a depressive, suicidal girl whose big eyes, girlish body, and blank expression have been the model for the central female characters in Japanese anime for the past decade.

“Rei is someone who is aware of the fact that even if she dies, there’ll be another to replace her, so she doesn’t value her life very highly,” Anno explains, slouching ever-deeper into the couch. “Her presence, her existence—ostensible existence—is ephemeral. She’s a very sad girl. She only has the barest minimum of what she needs to have. She’s damaged in some way; she hurts herself. She doesn’t need friends.”

Anno understands the Japanese national attraction to characters like Rei as the product of a stunted imaginative landscape born of Japan’s defeat in the Second World War. “Japan lost the war to the Americans,” he explains, seeming interested in his own words for the first time during our interview. “Since that time, the education we received is not one that creates adults. Even for us, people in their 40s, and for the generation older than me, in their 50s and 60s, there’s no reasonable model of what an adult should be like.” The theory that Japan’s defeat stripped the country of its independence and led to the creation of a nation of permanent children, weaklings forced to live under the protection of the American Big Daddy, is widely shared by artists and intellectuals in Japan. It is also a staple of popular cartoons, many of which feature a well-meaning government that turns out to be a facade concealing sinister and more powerful forces.

Anno pauses for a moment, and gives a dark-browed stare out the window. “I don’t see any adults here in Japan,” he says, with a shrug. “The fact that you see salarymen reading manga and pornography on the trains and being unafraid, unashamed or anything, is something you wouldn’t have seen 30 years ago, with people who grew up under a different system of government. They would have been far too embarrassed to open a book of cartoons or dirty pictures on a train. But that’s what we have now in Japan. We are a country of children.”

Look at this fraudulent bastard hosting a bacchanal with the nobility. To think that a decade ago he was trying to perfect his Che Guevara pose…

I always knew that Anno was a nut job with an agenda, but now he shows that he is just another card carrying member of the fascist Japanese media elite. It’s because of the the aid of such sycophants that the horribly miss named Liberal Democratic Party ruled Japan with an iron hand for over 50 years since their last great ass kicking. Anno has worked tirelessly to poison subsequent generations of boys into being spinless sacks of shit that touch themselves. Anno also seeks to re-mold Japanese women into haremettes that don’t talk, act, coy, and are too dumb to realize that Japanese doormats aren’t worth loving. All this stems from his fear of gaijin. Well today I am calling out the purple pissing cock sucker that he is on his racist xenophobic disdain of non-Japanese.

First off what gender roles did EVA define anyway? Did feminism start when Asuka was introduced? Did cowardice become epidemic when Shinji graced this work with his infamous hand job? I think not women have been agitating and booing trash like Anno for centuries. Secondly what eco friendly propaganda made its way into this series anyway? Japan became a tropical paradise, and the world turned into orange goo an obvious nod the Anno and his franchise deal with Orange Julius… There was no mention of global warming because Anno is one of those louts who thinks it is non-existent part of the “too many layers of clothing lobby” me thinks. Mr. Anno even dares to put himself up there with Star Wars and the Beatles, this is unforgivable. No way on Haruhi-sama’s green earth is this even remotely true, Star Wars and the Beatles influence spanned the globe, EVA is still largely regional if even that. Already we see what heresy that Anno it trying to raise, claiming credit for stuff that ain’t even his…how despicable, and how shameless!

We also see that Rei, and by extension Anno, sought immortality. Mr. Anno cursed the fate handed to him and each and every human form the moment of their birth, that we are all fated to die and be judged before a higher power. Such his is craven nature that he fears death even now lingering on long past his prime, still seeking youth where there is none to be found unless, by more unholy means… The fool fails to realize that everyman has the same fate, it is how you lived and how you died that makes us different. Judging by his current progress not even the Buddha would grant him salvation, neither should we…

End of Part I, second half in the latter part of the day say 12 hours. Impz made me cut it. T_T

    But he has a beard! No man can be accused of evil if he has a beard.

    Somewhere in an alternate dimension there is a universe where a clean-shaven Hideaki Anno is a force for good.

    Srsly, Crus, Anno just wants people to rail at him.

    I’d prefer sticking a railgun up his butt, for sheer hilarity.

    You’re claiming (or not, I can’t tell if your “sarcasm” is a convenient coverall at this point) Evangelion was meant to mould the collective psyche of Japanese everywhere, yet you’re railing at him for it not bringing anything to the table?

    Seems like a contradiction to me. It’s also pretty ironic that you’re calling him a fool for trying to claim immortality yet you dedicate a two-parter to him on a site with immense daily traffic. I found that pretty funny, but nvm.

    The two parter is done more because the initial entry was wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too long for a single post. As much as I feel that this entry should be a single topic, the problem with a major amount of text (one that made poor Impz go @_@) means that it has to be cut into half. With that in mind, I advice Crusader to edit it to a two part entry.

    Hope that clarifies things. On the article itself, I will leave Crusader to clarify because answering anything right now in the morning is not good for my health. Big time.

    @tj han
    Don’t be fooled by the beard it only enhances his sinister nature. After all Ivan the Terrible had a beard, as did Karl Marx and Cao Cao.

    @Mangator
    Hey at least you enjoyed part one.

    @DrmChsr0
    You know he might enjoy that… ;)

    @OwenS
    I made no such claim the article claimed this was true, I don’t believe a word of it. As for having a convenient coverall yes I do like it. It’s not a contradiction it is poor writing induced by a lot of pain eating out of a straw and being on for prescriptions as once. ;)

    As for being a two parter that was because of my taskmaster. Yes Anno may achieve immortality of sorts in the memories of otakus such as yourself, but his life will end. Sorry but no one lives forever.

    @ZeusIrae
    That was the only part I found agreeable.

    @D.J
    Nay! Let him suffer death by a thousand cuts!

    @TheBigN
    Sorry for the confusion.

    @Impz
    I told you that this was a bad idea. Cutting this thing in half, you say…

    Heh. Wait till our podcast comes out this week. We are much more unrestrained there on this issue than I was in the writeup you linked to! I was intentionally circumspect in my original post.

    Anno’s comments are hypocritical and I wont defend them. (Not to mention lacking in courage, compared to his ex-colleague Takami Akai, who battled publically with otaku and lost his job at Gainax; I seriously doubt a lot of Japanese otaku are also subscribers to the Atlantic.) Nevertheless I still respect him as a storyteller in the work he did from Gunbuster to Kare Kano, and I credit my anime fandom to Evangelion. Anime directors are some of the last people I’d turn to for political and social commentary, and it’s interesting how David Samuels (whose current Atlantic cover story is a long, critical account about Condi Rice) bought into the Eva propaganda hook, line, and sinker as a true barometer of modern Japan. A lot of your funny critique is really aimed less at Anno and more at Samuels’ perception of Anno and Evangelion. He’s a good writer but reading this article and his current one, I think he’s clearly out of his depth on this issue.

    Oh well. Let him rant. All I care now about is if the Eva remake shows whether he can still tell a compelling story or not. And you’ll hear about it at my blog. :)

    Huh… so this is the man who has been depressed for most of his life while producing Eva… and now who’s talking?
    I really despise how the Japs have to be at the top NO MATTER WHAT THEY DO. It’s so disgusting. If they fail at something, they’ll be moaning and sobbing over it for the next century. It’s this freaken’ honor thing. I would really want to screech “YOU’RE NOT PERFECT. DEAL WITH IT!” to Japan sometimes.

    Do you mean japan as a collective, or individually. I live in japan at the moment, and most (high school students) don`t give a shit about beating anyone else out or being at the top. They`re just happy to skate by on a passing 36 percebt
