Kaze no Stigma Episode 20: The Tattered, Jade-Green Shadow

kns-20-title.JPG

This week finally gives us Kazuma’s past, with particular emphasis on his relationship with Cui Ling / Rin’s. The Pandemonium issue also complicates itself, as some players have been upgraded into stronger fighters.

So now we have renegade (and not particularly intelligent, IMO) amateur wizards running around wrecking havoc. Kazuma, taunted by the presence of Lapis (Rin #2) which reminds him of his failure to protect Rin, turns ferocious as we have never seen before. I have a feeling that he will wreck even more havoc than those idiotic renegade amateur wizards.

Summary

kns-20-screenshot-1.JPG

Following last week, Lapis is blasted through the wall right in front of Kazuma by Ayano’s powerful attacks. Ayano follows through the wall, throwing Lapis further away against yet another wall with a forceful parry. Just as she is about to deliver a final attack, she is stopped by Kazuma, who cut off her path with a blast of wind.

Ayano is confused and rather angry, but seeing Kazuma’s own confused and shocked face, she stopped yelling at him. Kazuma then involuntarily says, “Cui Ling….

where did you see this episode?

Nice summary Briar! Finally I understand some holes in my interpretation when i watched the raws, I am not that good with Japanese, still didnt stop me from really enjoying this show. Just like you said it is a very intense episode, for me it is by far the best, especially since it is finally showing Kazuma’s past. As for me, I am more of a fan of Rin than Ayano, since i would think, if Kazuma was still weak would Ayano even notice him? She didnt even remember him before and just regarded him as a weakling, for it is kinda of a childish crush or superficial love Ayano has for Kazuma, since she doesn’t really bother on trying to know him.

Also as i understood, Kazuma said that Rin accepted him and sees him as he really was, and that alone tilts the better one for Kazuma. Though i do as well like Ayano, since her character is unique and developed quite well throughout the episodes, but I see her just as Kazuma’s important partner, nothing more. So yes i kinda agree with you about Ayano being doomed for an unrequited love, but as it is that’s highly possible, though who knows in the future. Kazuma did say she might become a great woman in the future, maybe then can she truly love him, since i think that Ayano is still too immature in the present.

I still think Kazuma’s true love was and still is Tsou Rin, whether it was tragic and that it was Kazuma Kannagi who fell in love with her, since she was the reason why he became Kazuma Yagami.

Yep i agree with Nanaya about Tsoi Rin as Kazuma’s one and only love. Since i believe that even if and only if Ayano gets together with Kazuma, he would still love Rin more than he does Ayano, since it is kinda obvious that she was the greatest factor or impact he had in his life. It wasnt when he was getting bullied, or when he was exiled, he didnt care about those since he was with Rin. Though when failing to protect Rin, influenced him to the very core, and made him that much stronger and colder.

Also even though i did like the flashback, for me it was not enough, i did like the part about Rin and Kazuma, but i at least expected more flashbacks which i am hoping in ep. 21 above will show more, like how Kazuma met Tsou Rin, How and Why Tsou Rin was sacrificed, and How Kazuma became strong and a contractor.

Is sad I hope they bring Rin back and be together with Kazuma in the end, Ayano is nice and all but ” Nanaya” hit the main point right on the dot. “if Kazuma was still weak would Ayano even notice him? She didnt even remember him before and just regarded him as a weakling” and Rin accept him as who he truly is having power or not. Just this point beat Ayano hands down.

No doubt about it that Rin was a massive part of Kazuma’s life. Losing her really led to the death of Kannagi Kazuma. He was just a different person then a lot more cheerful and really quite happy.

As things are for sure Rin is just a bigger person to Kazuma than Ayano. At the time she has been helped out by him and while a bond is being formed it hasn’t gotten to that point yet. Right now I think Ayano has to do something big for Kazuma’s sake to get a bigger part of his life. Things happen and Rin is gone that doesn’t mean Ayano can’t get together with Kazuma.

I’m curious how things are going to continue. Kazuma looks like he’s snapped and will kill anyone in his way. It may come down to Ayano stepping up and giving everything she’s got to stop him. But I just don’t know if that’s possible.

I find Rin better than Ayano. For all the good reasons mentioned by the comments above. Also i doubt Kazuma will allow himself to become a Kannagi ever again! Lol, its quite obvious just as he said, there’s no way in hell, that he will go back to the Kannagi. Despite Shouso (Ayano’s father) intentions and belief that he will come back, I hardly think he knows anything about the hell Kazuma went through in that family and probably his hatred of it, which he himself said he could never forget.

Ayano is going to be the next head you know, so that means there’s no way for them to be together unless Kazuma gave up his pride and self OR Ayano gives up her position, family, and her name “Kannagi” to become “Yagami” both cases is HIGHLY DOUBTFUL, just expressing my opinions on the matter, though i completely agree with Nanaya about Ayano at best being Kazuma’s most important partner, strictly business or hey maybe a little bit of fun and games now and then LOL.

Thanks Briar for the wonderful episode. I’m looking forward for next episode. Here is what I think is going to happen (IMPORTANT!!! If there is any similarity to what is really going to happen, that is not my intention, this is only a hypothesis since I haven’t read the manga or other sources of information.): Ayano rescues Kazuma from his berserk mode. She will be hurt both physically and emotionally by Kazuma and he will feel guilty about it. She realizes she is no match to the love Rin felt for Kazuma, so she will be sad and confused. The bad guy will take advantage of the situation and will do something to make Kazuma fight him, i.e Ayano. Kazuma will fight him since he doesn’t want for history to repeat itself. This is as far as my hypothesis goes.

    Anyways, Thanks for the summary!!!

I think that Ayano will get together with Kazuma because at the end of the opening song it said that she will try to heal his wounds of the past which i guess it Rin (i kinda like Rin better b/c she looks better and acts a bit nicer though i usually like Ayano’s type of character better (because she has the personality of Shana, from Shakugan no Shana, who is my favorite character

@ criskell: Apologies, we don’t provide links for anime here. *points at disclaimer located right below the latest post* But English subs are definitely out, so you’ll find the episode fairly easily.

@ Nanaya: “If Kazuma was still weak would Ayano even notice him?”

The thing is, Ayano was a kid when they last met. She was 12 years old. How many of us girls are interested in guys you defeated with a single stroke? Because that defeat is always between them, 12 years old Ayano is never able to see past it to see the real Kazuma. And who can blame her? She was a kid.

4 years ago, Ayano was vastly more powerful than Kazuma. Because of that vast difference in strength, I think it’s quite logical that she doesn’t see Kazuma as he really is. And I recall, when Kazuma lost to Ayano it was a rather bad fight, in the sense that young Kazuma didn’t really conduct himself with dignity.

However, when Kazuma met Rin, Rin saw him as he is. Why? Because Rin has no powers. Kazuma, even with his little magic, is still a strong man and better than most normal humans. Again, there is a difference in “power”; Kazuma is stronger than Rin. Hence, Rin can see past the issue of power (because there is no issue of power) to see the real Kazuma.

Unfortunately, gender discrimination in the role of love is still very much prevalent in society. As much as I don’t want to say it, a traditional Asian female do tend to look for men who are strong and able to protect them. Witness Rin asking Kazuma to protect her always and always.

The fact that Rin was able to accept Kazuma without question, and Ayano couldn’t, is simply because Kazuma is stronger than Rin and weaker than Ayano.

Ayano liking Kazuma now… it definitely started off as superficial infatuation. However it progressed. Sure, at first she was attacted to Kazuma’s power; but as time progressed, as Ayano got to know Kazuma more, she truly fall in love. I think next week will have more on that. Like in the preview, Ayano is adamant that Kazuma “would not do something like that, even if he is an egoistic and arrogant bastard”. She knows Kazuma can be a jerk (is in fact a jerk), but she likes him all the same, because she is beginning to see the complexities in him. She is even able to predict what Kazuma would do next, which drives it home for me that she truly does understand him.

    My own 2 cents. :P

@ X: I never really do believe in the one true love, because I think people change as time passes. Like I’ve said again and again, Kazuma Yagami is vastly different from Kazuma Kannagi; Ayano fall in love with Kazuma Yagami. Kazuma Yagami may very well fall in love back with Ayano, even if Kazuma Kannagi has only one woman in his heart.

Still, I don’t deny the influence Rin has on Kazuma. I simply feel that there is still room in his heart for Ayano. Loving Ayano now doesn’t mean that he has forgotten about Rin, after all.

I’m also looking forward to seeing more on Rin and Kazuma, how they met, how she was killed. Maybe next week?

@ tom: I personally still think that Rin was able accept Kazuma because she was weaker than him. Kazuma in an ordinary world, once out of the presence of his strong magical family, is probably stronger than Jet Li and Jackie Chan combined.

I think Genma also has this thought in mind when he sent Kazuma away. Because Kazuma would always be the runt of the litter in the Kannagi family; but once away from the Kannagi family, he might have found his own sense of worth and stability, and become strong in spite of his family.

Genma, IMO, is a right bastard, but he is more complex than Kazuma made him up to be.

@ FlareKnight: It really, really hurts to contrast Kazuma-then and Kazuma-now. The looks on their faces are so different, I almost thought I’m looking at someone else completely.

I’m actually looking forward to seeing how Ayano is going to give her all to stop Kazuma. Is she going to get beaten up by Kazuma? Stop him from sheer tenacity? Because in terms of power, she’s not going to be much use, even if she is (one of) the only person(s) who stay more than a little chance to do it (as she said somewhere in the earlier episodes).

IMO, she’s going to have to make use of their emotional connection. Then we will truly see if Kazuma has any feelings for Ayano or not.

@ Kei-chan: Kazuma may not be a Kannagi again, but I think in the end what he truly yearns for is acceptance and acknowledgement of his former family. Sure, he hates them. But he also wants to be accepted by them. Those people are his family, after all.

The person Kazuma hates most is Genma; but their rift is already starting to heal. I’ll say there is even more possibility of healing in the future, with regards to the entire Kannagi clan.

@ Romee: LOL glad to see that someone else is pro AyanoxKazuma! :D

@ anonymous: Gosh, I hope not. Kazuma can’t die, he has to live happily ever after with Ayano, preferably having a hell of a time indulging in extreme sarcasm as well as learning how to smile from the heart again.

@ Hola: You’re welcome! :) That’s a great hypothesis you have there; I think it’s very likely. Ayano is already aware of Rin’s importance in Kazuma’s heart, and is sad because of that. Kazuma has got to return some of her feelings, he has got to!

@ Shreya: Yeah, I totally agree that Kazuma will get together with Ayano. As you say about the ending theme, it is Ayano (and occasionally together with Ren) who held out a hand to him, in effect showing him that he is not alone. Kazuma needs that as much as he needs love, IMO. More, I think.

Question to Briar: you mentioned that the English subs of ep.20 is out already?

Since i just recently watched the subbed ep.19, though i already knew that not much happened, still i loved Kazuma’s evil laughter which terribly scared or surprised Ren. So Im hoping to watch this episode in subbed, just like what you said this episode was very intense.

I think i prefer Rin for Kazuma. Dont get me wrong i do love Ayano, but as she is now, she is way too immature. She needs some years of experience and understanding before she could truly become a “great woman” just as Kazuma said in ep.7 in misao’s arc, since i think she’s just a teenage brat, i mean jeez she is only 16 years old and still is quite shallow.

For now it’s Rin, well who knows how long she will last lol? Still a brief moment of love between Rin and Kazuma, a lovers reunion perhaps lol? Before passing away. Then a few years later, who knows we might see quite a mature Ayano who will be able to be with Kazuma and worthy of him, that i would like to see.

@ Nanaya: Apologies, I must be having Zombie Loan in my mind when I wrote that. I don’t think episode 20′s English subs are out, although admittedly I don’t really take note of it in any case.

    Sorry. :(

    @ Y1: That does make sense. Maybe Ayano does need to grow up more. On the other hand, these two episodes seem to portray an Ayano who is more mature — somewhat… comparatively — than in episode 1. I do wish the producers can keep that level of maturity up, because I hate it when they take this well developed character and turn her into helpless pulp. -_-;;

BOOOOO at all of you KazumaxAyano supporters-its just wrong. Ayano is WAY too immature for the cool Kazuma. I believe that Kazuma will either free Tsou Rin somehow and be with her, or as someone else said-he will die.

@JT: Same here, i find Ayano cool and all, but for Kazuma’s lover? Hell no, first of all she’s pretty bratty and immature, she needs some years of experience just as Y1 said. Also um if people may have forgotten, they are RELATED! EWWWW, frikin sick, they are second cousins, so still related nonetheless. Another thing, she knows nothing about him, i mean dam even Kirika knows that much about Kazuma, she probably slept with him already or something. I mean in the dam novel, Kazuma had an ex-girlfriend that he slept with in High school, but doubt that it was true love since he just dumped her and without even telling her that he was going away.

So the chances of him getting together with Kirika, perhaps to try to forget Rin, is quite high when they were together. From what ive heard she was his partner for quite some time in london, notice how they get along quite well??? Kirika always clinging onto him just proves how natural they are to each other. GO KIRIKA! I am a kirika supporter, even though there’s seems to have no development, but no one knows their relationship, since Kirika doesnt admit that they just get together in business. Still in the current development, im fine if Rin gets together with Kazuma, so long as it aint Ayano, they are good partners, PERIOD.

    @Briar

    You say it yourself

” Ayano liking Kazuma now… it definitely started off as superficial infatuation. However it progressed. Sure, at first she was attacted to Kazuma’s power; but as time progressed, as Ayano got to know Kazuma more, she truly fall in love.”

So if Kazuma still a weakling now after 4 years, would Ayano even noticed him now, I highly doubt it, she probably just ignore him the same way she did 4 years ago. You say as time progrss Ayano might get to know about Kazuma more, but I think if Kazuma is still a weakling at present then Ayano wouldn’t even bother to take the time to get to know him. Overall Ayano will only be attracted to Kazuma and will take the time to know him only if he has power. Thats like in reality that a women will only love a men if he has money, if he has no money she wouldn’t even cast him a second glance. Rin like Kazuma when he has nothing, if a women loves you when you at the lowest that is true love, unlike Ayano who got interested in Kazuma only because he becomes strong.

I am a fan of kazuma and rin. In my opinion Lapis and Rin are some how going to merge into one person to be with Kazuma or we find out Lapis is really Rin under mind control. Anayo only loves Kazuma because of his power while Rin loves him for him and Lapis might be the same.

  23. Nanaya
    Posted August 30, 2007 at 9:54 pm | Permalink

@Tom: Yup, definitely man, your right.

Tsou Rin loved Kazuma wasnt because Kazuma was stronger than her, cause if that was the reason then she couldve loved someone with a least bit of magical powers and still be able to beat Kazuma in his past self. But she didnt do that, she loved him despite their meeting lol, which I have understand or interpretted that since Kazuma was drinking and just picking fights. I imagined that they meet under that full moonlight (they did say that) in which Tsou Rin probably and most likely helped Kazuma, by offering him shelter and caring for him. Of course someone like Kazuma who belittled himself all along and was mistreated all his life, finally found his haven. This was by the care and love of Tsou Rin. That was why we could see Kazuma in all smiles and following Tsou Rin’s every command.

It was indeed true love, Kazuma changed drastically after meeting Tsou Rin, and he changed drastically once again after losing her. People cannot change that easily, we all know that, however if you have someone you truly care about and trust with all your soul, then that person can truly influence and change you. That’s evident right there of Tsou Rin and Kazuma’s love for each other. Also if you try to interpret it, it seems that Tsou Rin is quite an independent woman. From what Briar said that she relied on Kazuma because she was strong, for my opinion then that would mean that she wouldnt run such a business by herself. Yet she did it on her own, that is till she met Kazuma, in some ways she was able to confide, trust, and love him. I mean i think that they are the only ones who run that business together.

As for Ayano’s case, I dont find her love for him is indeed true, i mean come on, she doesnt even accept it! She denies it not just in front of everyone, but to herself as well. I know this is indeed quite cute, but it some ways it is also annoying. It’s because Ayano is shallow. She only started to like him because he was strong, and i mean a lot stronger than her. Once again, if he was weak, she wont give a dam, and thats that. The only person who probably still cares for him depite him being powerful or not is his brother Ren, notice how Kazuma cares for him above else, even Vernhert pointed it out that Ren is the only one left that is very important to Kazuma.

In case of Ayano, she liked him because of his strong powers, and now is the true test for her, whether or not she will still love him after knowing his past and now knowing his other side, the evil Kazuma or Yagami one lol.

@TifaGainsborough: “rins a nice person and i dont care if kazuma loves rin”

Um lol IMO, would that be called true love if Ayano loves him yet Kazuma clearly loves another? It’s more like unrequited love that this series will take, or at the very best they will become good partners, since according to the novel, Kazuma will acknowledge her to be his partner. Nothing more, nothing less. I dont really give a dam about the relationships just like you, but hell no that Ayano is keeping this show up, she’s annoying alone, she’s good with Kazuma thats it. This show is about Kazuma you know? He’s the main character, I assure you, not Ayano lol. Besides its him that I find this show good, not Ayano, she’s merely a rip off of other typical tsundere girls.

IT IS THE HOT KAZUMA WHO MADE THIS SHOW GOOD! PEOPLE WHO LIKED THIS SHOW IS MAINLY BECAUSE OF KAZUMA, IF YOU HATE HIS CHARACTER AND LOVE AYANO, AND IF KAZUMA ISNT IN THE SHOW, THEN THIS SHOW WOULD BE OVER, IN FACT THERE WOULD BE NO SHOW!!!!

ALSO JUST AS KAZUMA SAID “THERE’S NO WAY IN HELL, I’LL EVER GO BACK TO THE KANNAGI, UNDER THE NAME YAGAMI, I WILL NEVER DO SO.” EP.2 WHEN HE TALKED TO REN, IT SHOWS HIS DETERMINATION AND PRIDE, JUST LIKE YOU SAID THAT AYANO HAS PRIDE, WELL KAZUMA HAS TONS OF IT.

@ abe: Wow, I find this a really cool speculation. That Kazuma is also a contracter for the fire spirit lord is quite interesting. However, personally I think Kazuma is powerful enough as he is; if he’s also a contractor for the fire spirit lord, he’ll totally be incontrollably powerful and… well… that smack of Mary-Sue-ness (or Gary-Stuart-ness) to me.

Still, the choice of using red/orange for his berserk-mode eyes is very interesting.

@ JT: Ayano has been maturing, after all. Give her a chance. :D She is 16; how many of us are as mature as her at 16? Although it’s true that I wish she would stop saying certain things without thinking of that… I place the blame on the producers, however. Why they must make every heroine to fit a single mould is completely beyond me.

@ Zero: Again the related hang-up. :) Again I have to mention that I totally do not care about that. Take into account the Japanese culture… or most of the entire non-Western culture. Cousins marrying is nothing new.

Totally off topic, but it makes me wonder how Eve and Adam are able to populate the world if incest is such a taboo.

I never get the vibe that Kazuma and Kirika are a pair. Episode 21 would explain a bit on the relationship between them, but in any case… IMO Kirika and Kazuma has zero chemistry and very little mutual attraction. If there’s such a “relationship” that is partnership in business and nothing more, that would be Kirika and Kazuma.

Anyway, Kirika seems more interested in Genma. :P

@ blackitty: Unfortunately, Rin is dead. Ayano isn’t. I do agree that Rin and Kazuma are good together, but I have to say, the Kazuma in Kaze no Stigma present is no longer the Kazuma Rin knows. As simply as that, I quite doubt the two of them will gel that well anymore.

@ Tom: Attraction is such a fragile thing. We can’t dissect why two people are attracted to each other. You could say Ayano wouldn’t like Kazuma if he wasn’t powerful. I could say that the main issue is that Kazuma has grown strong in personality, instead of the weakling (not in physical power, but in character) who lost to her in a simple duel.

I could just as well say that if Kazuma wasn’t good looking, Ayano wouldn’t look twice at him. :D (this statement is extremely true for yours truly.)

Ayano, IMO, was completely pissed off by Kazuma at first. Remember, she thought he killed her family. I personally think the first inkling of attraction was when Kazuma kissed her in order to give her the elixir to save her. Before that, it was just “ok he’s handsome but he is such a JERK”. After that it was “ok he’s handsome and a jerk but… boy, he’s really really handsome!” (or to that effect)

4 years ago, Ayano was 12 and of course she didn’t notice Kazuma. Not only is Kazuma weak in terms of power and personality, but Ayano is also 12. Who notices boys at that age? especially a boy so much older.

Comparing power to money is not as good, IMO, as comparing power to beauty. Money is outside of the body and the person; beauty is inside. Sure, it’s shallow to be attracted to people because they are handsome/pretty, but it’s true nonetheless that looks are important at the inital stage of a relationship. However, people stay together not because of looks, but because of personality. IMO, Ayano likes Kazuma now because of his personality.

@ mike: Evil Kazuma is… evil. Enough said. :D

@ magixiii: Lapis is more interesting than Rin to me. I do hope that Lapis has more space to develop in the episodes left.

@ Nanaya: I don’t deny that Rin and Kazuma had a special relationship. But I do live in hope that Ayano and Kazuma would have a similarly special relationship. In the end, it is not how the attraction starts that matter; it is how the attraction progress to be.

Even if Ayano initially likes Kazuma because of his power (although I’m of the opinion it’s more his good looks :P ), in the end Ayano likes Kazuma for who he is, not who what he is.

Episode 21 would explain that like Kazuma changing drastically after meeting Rin, so he has changed drastically after meeting Ayano. IMO, the Kazuma now does not need a Rin who will unconditionally love him; he needs an Ayano who will constantly challenge him and make him smile.

As for Ayano not admitting her love for him. She’s 16. And a Japanese. They just don’t have the culture of having the female take the first move. Not to mention the fact that Kazuma appears to have little interest in her; what kind of blow her pride will take if she admit it to herself that she likes him but he doesn’t like him?

I do agree that the following episodes will be a test for her. Will she accept all the facets of Kazuma?

@ TifaGainsborough: LOL we all have our opinions. :D Though I’m glad someone likes Ayano for herself.

@ Kei-chan: It’s true love if Ayano loves him truly, even if it’s unrequited true love. :) I do watch KnS for Kazuma, although Kazuma’s relationship with Ayano runs a close second. I can’t help it; I’m shallow and Kazuma’s good looks and strength is one big element of my enjoyment.

@ Kazuma Fangirl: Ayano isn’t that bad. I still think it’s the producers wrecking havoc on her personality. I mean, according to usagijen at Scrumptious Anime Blog, the Ayano in the manga is a lot more mature and stronger than the Ayano in the anime. And not as annoying.

Although I don’t think Ayano in the anime is that annoying. :)

@ melody: Again, I’m glad there are Kazuma x Ayano fans out there. I don’t want to be the only one! :P Still, it’s really true that we all have different opinions, which means that the anime is good enough to have us all have different POVs of the situation.
