Making New Year Resolutions

I apologize for not wishing you all a Merry Christmas or whatever religious or cultural holiday you subscribe to during the winter solstice, but now that my family has drunken themselves silly and my younger brother has had is birthday party I am free to return to my normal schedule.

Besides I have spent enough time with my recently born cousin that she no longer cries when I hold her, one of the things that sucks about studying away from home is that you miss out on such grand occasions. Seeing as how the New Solar Year is upon us it is high time I come up with resolutions for January 1st, 2008.

Note that a resolution is hardly a promise just a simple goal for the year that you may or may not ever fulfill given how lazy the average human is. Like most Americans I tend to make more resolutions than I actually see through and even then rarely ever successfully. But it serves nicely to see how little progress I make in improving my life. So here a few of mine for 2008, forgive me if they are not all anime related. I just wanted to have it written in stone in a sense and to shame myself in to fulfilling more than zero…

• I resolve to treat my blog master Impz with the respect that he deserves. I really should start letting him try to live down his trap status and his infamous reputation as a green haired loli-trap. Impz is human too and has greatly expanded his army this year so he deserves a break from my incessant jeering. Good thing this resolution crap is a goal and not a promise.

• I resolve to pick my anime series with extreme prejudice. I have to say this year was an exercise in futility given which series I watched and which I opted out of. I hope that in the future I can pick series better and not rush headlong without doing a longer trial period.

• I resolve to get an oven timer to manage my time. I am still not use to the quarter system that my bloody university uses. I remember the good old semester days when students did feel rushed or had nearly as many all-nighters. Man the things I sacrificed to go to a more prestigious university. Still hopefully it will help me limit how much time I waste doing non academic things.

• I resolve to not send any more crap overseas. I sent Impz a little game call Empire Earth II and it cost me an arm and a leg to get it shipped with tracking. The next time I ever send an old game to paradise I will think twice, or just finish a bunch and then kick it off.

• I resolve to spend less money on videogames. I am pretty much spent out this year on some high tech toys and a gaming orgy that covers almost every Nintendo Wii game and plenty of Xbox 360 exclusives, I resolve that in the coming year I will limit by purchases of games to the sure fire AAA titles. Seeing as how only Alan Wake has caught my eye, and the fact that the Wii only has a SSBB, Mario Kart Wii, and No More Heroes it shouldn’t be too hard. Thankfully that younger brother of mine splurged on an 80 GB PS3 he is so desperate for games to play on it I would do well to point him in the direction of Devil May Cry 4 and MGS 4. Besides its high time he starts paying for games rather than take advantage of my gaming dollars. Given how many of my co-workers and friends have 360 games I can probably loan and borrow titles such as Call of Duty 4. I dearly hope that most of my excessive spending was due to the most excellent Fall line up in 2007.

• I resolve to not buy any more doo dads for my consoles. I don’t normally spend a lot on pimping out my consoles but I did get that blasted Nyko 360 Cooler. The damn thing drained off enough power to cause a hard drive failure, though fortunately not a red ring of death. I picked up the 120 GB 360 hard drive, as I am betting that second generation 360 parts are a bit more reliable than the rebuilt hard drive that my warranty covers. I lost all my saves for Bioshock and Mass Effect which really ticked me off, but hopefully in 2008 there will be no reason for a catastrophic failure that forces my to put up more money. So if you were like me and did not get the memo, the Nyko 360 is a bad buy and if you have it trash it, because it does void your warranty.

• I resolve to only make at the most two figure purchases this coming year. I am not terribly big on researching the plethora of products as I have yet to fully feel the fires of the “passion.”

• I resolve to spread out my manga purchases and more tightly control them. Manga wise I am quickly running out of space and while the releases for the ones I read are mercifully spread out I am resolving to only pick up one new series at most. I also resolve that I will accept no less than a 25% off coupon when going to Borders since that ought to further restrict when I buy.

• I resolve to only buy the rest of SHnY this coming year and no other anime boxed set. Seeing as how I picked up all three boxed sets of Crest of the Stars, Last Exile, and a bit of SHnY this year can only realistically afford the rest of SHnY in 2008. I feel that I have done enough to support the industry in 2007, at least until Lord Moyism writes a book on how to stay in the black and have a house full of anime goods.

• I resolve to spend less money on my miniature hobby. I still haven’t given up my old nerd ways when it comes to miniature war gaming. I have inherited a lot of stuff from my brother and cousins who left the hobby and after boxing it all up I just realized just how much I actually had…

• I resolve to paint the miniatures I already have. It’s been a long time since I painted any thing, which was a real shame as it was a great stress reliever for me. It also gave me a sense of accomplishment when I finished. Well here is to getting a few projects done.

• I resolve to buy only Munchkin expansions for the core game. Yes I am a huge nerd that plays Munchkin. I even have Star Munchkin and Munchkin Cthulhu. It’s a great game but I have come to realize that the original is the only really supported and the first one still remains the best. Sorry Steve Jackson but you seem to milking your great game a bit too much for my tastes.

• I resolve to buy more of my food locally rather than driving 45 minutes out to Travis AFB. In the past I had gone to the Commissary for food, and while cheap was contributing to an excessively high fuel bill. Besides since the local farmers market is organic I can feel like I am helping out the little guy. The University Meat Lab has some decent sausage and so far the tri-tip hasn’t turned out to be a bad bet.

• I resolve to advance my military career. I really must start seriously getting my E-5 pracs signed off so I can get promoted for more pay given how much gas costs nowadays. As the college funding process in the military has changed so significantly I need to put in the new paper work so I can get some of that 10,000 dollars for college that Uncle Sam owes me.

• I resolve to apply for more jobs. It really worries me that even now my comrades in the College of Engineering are having a bit of trouble getting work a year after graduation. Even if my graduation date has been delayed I really need to get the ball rolling for some municipal, state, and federal jobs seeing as how they take forever and a day to get back to an applicant. I just hope they have room for microbiology graduate. If all else fails I might have to integrate.

So comrades what are your resolutions for 2008? It will be interesting to look back in one year’s time to see how far we have all come or how lazy we really are.

    I’m not a big fan of Munchkin, being that my gaming group tends to backstab one another in-character during normal games so often that the DM often wonders if we secretly hate each other or something.

    I resolve to try other genres of anime other than moe harem comedies. However, as you said, this is a goal, not a promise.

    Hahaha, I believe that some of them are definitely not achievable by any means.

    No way for Crusader

    Very funny. I must prepare my rusty bayonet and a cool M40 to snipe you dead.

    Good luck with keeping those (except the one about Impz, of course). I’d be worried eating sausage from something called the University Meat Lab, but I probably don’t understand the context.

    @DKellis
    I thought that it was the duty of a good GM or DM to rule his/her world and layeth the smackdown when players got out of hand. Still maybe youor games just turn out more fun that way.

    @aznchocoholic
    If all else fails tell yourself that the floor is just one big shelf… ;)

    @Impz
    Assuming of course you even get near the armory, and what kind of soldier let’s his equipment rust like that? Still if your up for a sniper duel I’ll Bring along a M24 and a Fairbairn-Sykes fighting knife. However I am disappointed that a gun monkey like you wants to play sniper instead of using a 155mm howitzer to fire for effect…

    @IKnight
    The University Meat Lab slaughters the school’s cattle, since I go to an agricultural college and all. Its all organic so there had to be a trade off somewhere.

    @0rion
    Its a great game but the first is still the greatest.

    @ron~
    Happy New Year to you as well.

    @Impz, nooooooo don’t kill Crusader he’s one of my fave bloggers!

    I have but one, I WILL paint that damn tray for Imouto. I did promise after all, but its so hard to work up the will to put her yaoi fantasies down in paint.

    *Whines* I don’t wanna draw naked men doing things to each other. (Well actually I drew the line at them actually doing anything. She gets pretty boys, well looking pretty and maybe semi-dressed, but that’s as naughty as she’s getting!

    Okay, okay I have two. I will work really hard to not whimper so much when Hubby-sama tickles me, or decides to leach heat with his cold hands. Because it only encourages him to do it more. Especially in public places, because he thinks its funny when I blush, because people have turned round to stare at me.

    And its only gotten worse since he decided I sound like poor Asahina when she’s being molested by Haruhi. If I’m gonna get molested by him, I’d rather it was for more enjoyable reasons dammit. *ahem, sorry bout the TMI*

    Hmm actually there is a third. I will try not to stay up til the wee hours playing video games on a work night. It just makes me cranky since my only caffeine intake comes from my one cup of tea a day. And well when your job involves scalpels its probably a good idea to be alert. Forgetting to clamp arteries is VERY MESSY!

    Aaaaaaaand I can with utmost certainty say that I probably won’t keep any of those.

    For number one I just really can’t muster up the enthusiasm. I’ll paint her a bishified Gaara instead, that would probably make her just as happy.

    For number two I definitely won’t be able to keep it. I’m just too weak when it comes to tickling.

    And number three. Well you always tell yourself you’ll get an early night but it never happens. As long as its not on too many consecutive nights I actually stay pretty alert. If anything I get even more hyper the less sleep I get, of course what comes up must come down eventually. But then isn’t that what the weekends are for?

    Hopefully you’ll fare better than me Crusader and manage to keep to some of yours. GOOD LUCK!
