Sanzenin Nagi vs. Louise Françoise Le Blanc de La Vallière vs. Shana
For episode 5 of Anime Face-Off we have a special 3-way contest involving three little ladies with many things in common. They all happen to be loli, tsundere, and voiced by Kugimiya Rie. Who’s your personal favorite? Are you driven by money? magic? or excellent swordsmanship? You decide which loli tsundere is the absolute best!
Shokkeru’s Thoughts
While I’m not particularly a big fan of tsundere type characters, I’ll try to give as much of my opinion as I can. So to help me today, we have a guest speaker… our local tsundere expert Calawain. =)
Nagi
Three words, Mask the Money. I thought that part of the show was absolutely hilarious and adorable. Nagi may be rich and a manga artist with lots of effort (not so much skill) but, that Mask the Money part just made her qualities jump up a level.
Louise
Louise is great, especially when she’s in that maid’s outfit. But, she’s a bit too violent for me. I mean it’s natural for tsundere to show a little bit of violence once in a while but, Louise takes it to the extreme. Not only does she have that whip but exploding magic as well? No thanks. But some may think, the harder the trial, the better the reward.
Shana
Shana is probably the crowd favorite and easily an icon among anime characters. When you think of a loli tsundere wielding a katana, you’d probably immediately think of Shana.
Calawain’s Thoughts
Nagi
Hayate is one of my favorite shows and manga out there, and Nagi is one of the reasons for it. She switches from tsun-tsun to dere-dere multiple times within single episodes, making her the most adorable out of the three. She’s also very assertive and not shy about almost everything except things relating to Hayate. Her violence (a staple of most loli tsunderes) is limited and only used when absolutely necessary. When it comes to Hayate she is the most forward, and she tries the best that someone of her age and experience really knows how to in getting closer to him. I really like that she isn’t afraid to ask him out places or stand up to her rivals in a real way.
I also really admire that she has little shame in her otaku hobbies, even going so far as to try and get her work published. I’m pretty shy about this sort of stuff and so someone that can be open about it and not in an obnoxious way, is admirable to me. Out of the three I would pick her as my top pick.
Louise
My least favorite of the three, Louise suffers from an addiction to abusing Saito. I really don’t like the overly sadist tsundere types who have to beat the shit out of their love interest at every possible moment. I have the same view as Shokkeru here when it comes to that, the whips and exploding magic multiple times an episode is too much for me, no thanks.
Shana
Shana is somewhere in between Nagi and Louise for me. Yeah she kicks ass, doesn’t take shit from people, and looks good doing it, but season 2 of this show has really dropped her down in my eyes. The first season the development between her and Yuji was pretty good tsundere and love interest action, with an acceptable pace for a 26 episode action show. She was assertive and told Yoshida her rival that she was going to claim Yuji for his man meat in no uncertain terms. However, this all came to a crashing halt during season 2, as she hasn’t had the guts to say much to him and instead just mopes around looking angsty. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

A note on the tsundere violence, you also have to take into account if the receiving party LIKES the abuse.
Did Saito ever try to kill Louise in her sleep N00! its because deep down inside he’s a masochist.
Yuji on the other hand could use to be b*tch-slapped from time to time.

I would still stick with Shana, because the person who really needed a punch in the face (and a katana through the throat) is Yuuji. Is it just me or does Kugimiya Rie voice mostly tsundere characters?
You know there’s something very very wrong (or very very right, if you prefer) when all three of those characters are voiced by the same seiyuu.

@Gravmech: Yeah, I sometimes too think that Saito actually enjoys the beatings Louise gives him. Yuuji deserves a beating from time to time also. I’m surprised Shana hasn’t beaten him for messing around with Konoe.

@Nekonron: These are the only three roles I know of hers that are tsundere. But, I haven’t seen any of the other anime which she was a part of either. It probably has to do with how if you get recognized for one role, you get called on for a lot of similar roles. Similar to how Noto Mamiko had at least three similar roles (Hecate/Konoe from Shana, Nodoka from Negima, and Yakumo from School Rumble).
