Macross Frontier 01: Come for the loli stay for the mecha

This one’s for you Impz.

crusader-san.jpgI admit here and now that I am one of those unwashed Americans whose only exposure to Macross was in the form of Robotech as a kid. I have many fond memories of it but after doing a bit of research I was aghast at how much I would have to hunt for all the episodes I missed over the last 20 some odd years. Suffice to say even if this series gets snubbed by the high minded blue bloods who have watched every single Macross series with gusto, this poor plebian is only now beginning his pilgrimage into worshiping Valkyries…

Powell has two Ls! Nevertheless reminds me of home.

I think the blokes in the Macross Frontier team had a better grasp about how to build colonies unlike the heathens in Gundam with their undefended rotary colonies and lack of FTL travel. In Macross every colony fleet is self sufficient complete with own military to take on any threat the colony might encounter. Unlike Gundams, Valkyries are the epitome of a mass produced weapon. Useful all round, yet not invincible as Gundams often become. Good to see that AWACs is important in the Macross Universe in the form of the VF-17 Nightmare. I like how they can mod the same airframe for different roles. Unlike Gundam 00, Macross Frontier has an almost future feel to it with the inclusion of unmanned fighting units and a PA system that works for evacuation orders. Having janitor bots that don’t look like human maids is a nice plus for functionality. They even invested in a sweet ejection system to save pilots. How’s that for treating your no name peons right? My only complaint is that the Engrish was unholy. I just wish they could simply cut copy and paste the lines from the Super Star Destroyer Executor’s control tower, “Shuttle Tydirium what is your cargo and destination?” would have been awesome compared to “reply to me.”

Shizuru Viola?

The dogfights were all round grand with CG being used properly for combat instead of stairs or ugly dragons. The Asteroid fight was spectacular and brought back memories of Han Solo’s 3,720 to 1 chance of successfully navigating an asteroid field. Once this series gets going I would like to see the new successor to the Minmay Defense. It will be interesting to see if the VF-25 gets mass produced quickly or if the humans come up with new and novel tactics to over come their current military inferiority to the biofighters they encountered. It was also good to see the Frontier Fleet using defense in depth and combined arms instead of using fighters to pwn all. Though I am unsure how I should feel about Civilian Military Providers, if they don’t get paid they are militia who stand for freedom (freedom being free and dumb), other wise they are mercenaries.

Now that is a robot that every one can use.

As for the main hero Alto, I like the bastard. Alto is not nearly as emo or uncertain as a Gundam meister or Coordinator Pilot, and much more likeable. Since the bloke looks two levels on the side of girly like other bishie pilots it’s nice to see that his comrades in the flight team have also noticed and rib him for it. Even if Alto disappoints it’s still fun to refer to him as Alto Hime. Though I hope he realizes that 2000 ft. is only short when flying not falling. Still Alto has a good reason for taking that VF-25 after its pilot met one messy end because saving green haired lolis is always a just cause according to Impz’s Manifesto. Ranka is a nice name hopefully she will be as much fun as Ranka-san from Ouran. Besides I like her cell phone, it’s very unique and looks nigh unbreakable. They even put in some subtle hints to explain why Alto was able to pilot the VF-25 because after all his flight unit was the same one the military uses, unlike the sort of get in and go in Gundam…

Sweet, yes?

Not sure if anyone else was getting some Shizuru vibes from Sheryl, but that might be because of the hair. Nevertheless I like the music and it’s not Macross without an idol. Hopefully the songs won’t be overused even if the concert was great. If nothing else I like that colony, as a San Francisco native I like seeing street cars and the Golden Gate Bridge. Now if they add Fisherman’s Wharf, Chinatown, and Lombard St. they can do no wrong in my book.

I think that the red string makes him look girly.

I am very much saddened that this isn’t coming out until spring, and I do hope that the subs will be done in a timely manner as befits this august franchise. I encourage those of you who haven’t to watch this episode if only to simply bask in the CG glory. Sadly as it seems that this is going to go head to head against a bevy of heavy hitters that it might not get the attention that it deserves, unlike say Code Geass S2. Even if there is no outpouring of support, this collection of human malice will sing praise for Macross Frontier until the very end.

Now that is a school!

    \o/ the green hair loli is so cute! Well, I am no huge fan of Mecha but I am a fan for the original Macross series. I think that the plot for the show is as usual somewhat suspect, but the graphics really make the battle scenes great. How I wish Persona 3 had such great battle graphics. The series will be up by a few notches with the persona fights.

    Anyway, saving green hair lolis are important to saving the world from destruction.

    *salute*

    meh, for me the CG explosions were absolutely awful.It almost ruined the space fights.

    Anyway, long live to the green haired loli.May Impz, the Lord of Green Haired Loli, protect her.

    For one who have watched a lot of Macross during his years, there are a lot of symbols that have appeared before :p

    Still it´s a show I will continue to watch, nice mecha is always fun to watch. Even if they are in 3d nowadays :( Where´s my valkyrie solo fighting that is handdrawn? I want it back!!

    Anyway, back to my studies…

    CG good, potentially emo bishie main character bad. i bet this will be one of the shows you watch for graphics and not for plot. Love the mech and colony designs.

    Every other Macross I’ve watched or tried to watch has been horrid, so I’m sure I’ll avoid this one as well lol =/

    I’m a complete newcomer to the franchise (no Robotech, because no TV – ever) and I must say I did enjoy the action, though I found the CG a bit intrusive. General impression good.

    Alto doesn’t seem especially emo to me; as I said in my own entry, he’s ‘actually a potential don’. We shall have to see how he turns out.

    The part i kept watching the most was the part where Ranka was singing the commercial song… ‘so cute’ fits i think.

    and the ‘ending’ theme… i like how the new voice does it but how many times has it been re-sung?

    @Impz
    No more suspect than that of Gundam 00. Still I suspect that you much watch this for more green haired loli sales pitches. :P

    @ZeusIrae
    I think that as far as CG goes it was pretty damn good, still CG is here to stay.

    Indeed Impz is the queen of Green Haired Lolis. Praise be to the great monarch!

    @manga
    Well I suppose they could do it for a one on one dogfight, but for a swirling fighter melee I think that CG was acceptable. As for being a bit done before this will be my first pure Macross series in over a decade.

    @faye
    Hopefully Alto’s band of merry freinds will keep any bouts of emo in check. Besides Michael knows how to handle the perennial #2.

    @Calawain
    Plot is probably going to be a cut above Gundam and Sunrise, besides its still mechaservice. Unlike Gundam 00 this series looks like it will be aesthetically complete.

    @IKnight
    I hope Alto turns out to be likable, other wise Michael can’t die if only to cry Alto Hime to the very end.

    @Tenryu
    Green haired loli sales pitch ftw!

    Even if the song has been sung again and again its still a good song and my first exposure to it. Besides for a franchise this long lived the song has become a sort of Christmas carol in that every one has that favorite version.

    With the love the Macross universe shows missile barrages, I’m quite interested at what a future version of the Aegis combat system would look like. A solid wall of missiles, all individually tracked to the target, most likely. Crusader, what is your opinion on the relative benefits of missiles versus field artillery as an indirect fire mechanism, given your admitted love for the King of Battle.

    @Feye: You mean like Clannad? Well we’ll see….

    By the way, article still looks like was written by Jason Miao, and that’s not really a good thing.

    I’ve watched a few of the macross franchise and i have to say they’re keeping it alive. From idol singers to love triangles. Being gundam00′s competitor, macross frontier wins hands down, in almost every aspect. The super bishie look is somewhat annoying but at least its better than some socially deprived whimp. True, despite being a legendary series, its not getting as much attention as it should. Whats up with all the green haired loli stuff anyway.

    @Eirias
    Unless the costs, both monetary and material, of missiles goes down significantly I still have to put my bets on Artillery. Even now AEGIS is not used to intercept 155mm shells so the other solution are lasers. However lasers lack range and even then it can’t stop the shrapnel. In terms of economy of force one can bring more 155mm shells to the party than one can bring missiles, barring a gross inequity of resources and industrial capacity. Besides artillery men are quite a unique breed of soldier and even out own Impz is a gun monkey, and bloody good at ranging a target. Artillery can fire at a faster rate than missiles given the shorter reload times. The technical workings of a missile make it more prone to failure than a shell guided by gravity and thus reliability is still with artillery. So until they perfect the point defense laser, energy shields, linear accelerators or coil guns the gun-howitzer is here to stay.

    Besides artillery is cheap enough for nations to still “fire for effect,” you don’t always need to kill your enemy to win. Sometimes just letting the other side know that you can bring every divisional 155mm gun to bear in less than 5 minutes is often enough to bring attacks to a grinding halt. AEGIS did not kill the King. Long live the King!

    The blogmaster of this site, Impz, is in fact a green haired loli trap despite what propaganda to the contrary that you may have encountered. Thus this site has a policy on always promoting any green haired loli to appease out blog master. Strange yes, but to delve deeper would destroy one’s sanity… ;)

    Hey, great! Another addition to the Macross Saga. I would always prefer Macross over Gundam, even in building pla models. There is more feasibility and physics in Macross, although I can’t seem to figure out how the equipment transforms. :D

    … and the music! It is still yoko kanno in the soundtrack. I really love her work.

    This is something to look forward to. Thanks for blogging. :)

    Yes, I am the ignorant unwashed Westerner having only been exposed to Macross via Robotech – but you can’t help the things you fall in love with, right? So mock me for preferring Robotech – but help me ward off the others who think the Starship Enterprise could ever beat the SDF-1!
