Rosario + Vampire Episode 3/4- The Gonzostrophe

T_T indeed Yukari-chan . . . T_T indeed

I’m really not one to post big negative posts or rants, but sometimes you just can’t help yourself. First, I must apoligize to Hinano for alas, after the first 2 episodes I was hopeful that this show would be fun and not totally blow ass. However, after the third and especially the fourth episode I smashed my head onto my desk hoping that it was just a bad dream and that I would wake up. More on the wonderful world of Gonzo fillers and other rants and musings after the jump.

Episode 3

rosario02.jpgrosario03.jpgrosario04.jpg

To be honest they introduced Yukari-chan, the loli witch, similarly to the manga. That really wasn’t so bad, but as a staunch opponent of all things annoying and loli she is my least favorite member of the harem. Hell, they even gave her panty shot time. As a character she really isn’t anything special, genius loli witch girl who is lonely because she is smart and an outcast. The basic summary is this, first everyone teased her growing up because she is smart so she uses witch magic to play tricks on them and becomes even more isolated. However, she falls for Moka right away and walks around school grabbing onto her boobs. Then she pisses off Tsukune but later gets in trouble when jealous guys from her class confront her. Moka goes to defend her and eventually so does Tsukune, and they save her and she falls in love with Tsukune too. Thrilling I know.

Like I said before it wasn’t that the episode was particularly bad or anything, just really bland, like her character. I giggled when her classmates were pissed because they thought she said “desu” a lot to get the attention of the lolicons. Otherwise it was pretty zzzzzzzz throughout. It was to the point where I just couldn’t bring myself to blog the entry due to lack of motivation.

Episode 4
Where do I start? First this is a filler episode where the basic idea is that Tsukune is mopey and they all think he wants to go home. Let me spoil you, lol it turns out he just wanted to send some letters home, it was a misunderstanding. Haha so creative! Anyways, as for the rest of the summary, when Tsukune is off alone he is confronted by a godawful imitation of girl’s defense forces. There’s one for each in his harem, and they are pretty fucking stupid looking. I guess they were trying to be funny and make fun of the defense forces in shows such as Shuffle!, but they failed miserably. I couldn’t even laugh at them, let alone with them. There is such a thing as the art of parody, there are shows this season like Kimiaru and Koharu Biyori that take character and situational stereotypes and cliches and make fun of them. Those shows are hilarious, the writers there actually understand the art of parody. Yet this was the complete opposite, it really had little humor at all.

They also try to be funny with scenes such as having Moka and Tsukune looking lovingly at her saying “Moka-san….Tsukune…..Moka-san…..Tsukune” with pink bubbles all around, and then she comes up and bites his neck. Yeah once again I’m really not laughing, I’m yawning or facepalming. Basically, this was a complete departure from the tone and setup of the manga, one of the most horrid episodes of fillers I have ever watched. Please, employees of Gonzo, for proper creation of a filler episode please see episode 10 of Hayate no Gotoku! or episode 5 of Genshiken 2.

My other major problem with this episode is the mere fact that it was filler, beyond the content. It lies in the fact that the episode count for the show is announced at 13. Warning slight manga spoilers ahead. The problem is after four episodes we have yet to introduce the last member of the harem, Mizore (granted she appears in like chapter 18 or something, but she needs to appear soon for this to work). Also, there has been no discussion of the newspaper club that they all belong to. Couple that with the fact that for this show to be any good they have to get to the Witches Ranch and Outcast Arcs because otherwise it’s just monster of the week business. Once they get past the first chunk of monster of the week chapters the manga gets really really good. However, with this pacing I don’t even see how they are going to get out of silly harem hijinks, panty shots, and one monster per week. That’s fine to a certain degree, but all the meaty, emotional action and drama come after that. Oh, the next episode looks like a filler too, OH BOY. End slight manga spoilers.

So, after all of that I am quite disappointed as to how things are going so far to say the least. They really have emasculated Tsukune, he was pretty GAR and manly in the manga, and now he blushes all over the place and just kinda acts like a sissy most of the time. And they should have picked a better seiyuu, no offense but he sounds pretty girly.

As a result it is unlikely I’m going to continue covering this show unless it makes some miraculous turnaround. It’s kinda funny that none of the blogs I normally frequent is covering this show either, sadly funny actually. After all of that, I will leave you with some screenshots of the new ED. Episode 4′s content does not deserve any screenshots, but sexy vampire Moka definitely does. The animation quality is really well done, you don’t see many fully animated EDs these days, especially ones like this with a lot of action. The content of this show may be horrible but the production values are definitely top notch. Is Code Geass airing yet?

    I agree that the quality seems pretty high though the pacing is off. If they could nail Seto no Hanayome, why not this? Typical of Gonzo to go on and off and on and off. I wish they’d settle on ‘ON’.

    On no, this does not bode well. I hadn’t watched the latest episodes yet but I was hoping it would follow the manga quite closely. And adding filler content into a 13 episode run now gives me a bad feeling about how they will have to either rush the later arcs, or completely make a whole different ending.

    I miss Tsukune from the manga…

    The ED is seriously one of the better ED i’ve seen for a long time. God, if only the series itself was half as good.

    Well sorry for your loss, this would have been a fine show if…sorry can’t seem to type that with a straight face given how the first ep turned out. :P

    At any rate True Tears compels you to seek solace in the glorious glow of Noe! A handful of bird feed must you eat for doubting Lady Noe. ;)

    I tried watching it and while its not that awful its not doing much to glorify the source material. Mediocre and generic would be a term that applies to this show that never was, but here’s to a KyoAni re-make.

    I still enjoy the art (of underware-shots), the game I play where I keep myself from face-palming whenever some drama pops-up and the mystery of what Tsukune’s true identity really is.

    Lovely ED BTW…

    Tsukune GAR? Even in the manga, not when he’s in his right mind. He’s only ever GAR in intention, never in execution, if I can put it that way. Judging by the title, the next episode could be manga-based, introducing the newspaper club via another club (IIRC – but it’s been a while).

    Anyway, this show’s manifestly rubbish. Shame I like it, really.

    I told you so bwahahahaha
    I still watch this show because of Koyasu Takehito though…even though he’s just a commentating bat dechu~ xD

    i kinda liked the ep even if it was a filler since it explored what every helpless male lead feels when they can’t protect the girls except being a meat shield also the ending was nice and very informative on the possible final boss of the this season

    You have been GONZO’D!
    That’s why I don’t watch Gonzo shows unless other person watches at least 6 episodes and convince me it’s not made of SUCK.

    @Shippoyasha

    Well there was another studio involved in Seto no Hanayome, AIC, maybe they did most of the real work haha.

    @Deranged

    I agree on all points there, the manga material really deserves a longer running show without fillers.

    @Harbin

    Yeah, Moka is quite delicious in it eh?

    @Crusader

    True Tears is ok, and yes it is better than this, but I haven’t yet decided whether or not it’s any good. Giving it a maybe so far with a short leash, too many opportunities for it to fall into stupid melodrama.

    @IKnight

    The preview mentions some stuff about going to the beach or swimming pool or something to do with swimsuits. That wasn’t how the newspaper club was introduced in the manga. They do have the newspaper club president listed as a member of the cast though, giving Tomokazu Seki the job of voicing him, but with it not being mentioned until episode 5+ the pacing worries me tremendously.

    @Hinano

    I defer to your great wisdom and powers of prediction! And yes the bat is adorable most of the time, makes me giggle. I’ll probably continue to watch the show if nothing else to see how bad it gets.

    @Onizuka

    It is a bit early for my sarcasm meter, but hopefully that really was a sarcastic comment.

    I’m over all loving the show, though episode 4 was pretty weak. And I really don’t care for manga, so whether it follows it or not is of no concern to me.

    i dont read much manga being that i don’t have THAT much free time… yes i’m a mindless drone who can only subject himeslf to wathing the anime here and there but…. i must say this show may not be the best or on par with the manga but it;s good. funny very very funny.
