We have fully converted to THAT Anime Blog 3.0!

Rieuzedx wants everyone to STFU know that:
1. The blogroll will be returning once we get it fixed <-- fixed too
2. The problems with commenting (spacing, wording, size) is going to be fixed too <-- fixed

Impz wants to ask if
1. You are asked to download a sitemap file in IE when you try to access the blog.

Due to Rieuzedx’s great efforts, we have finally completed our move from the old template to our current new one as proposed by Rieuzedx earlier in the day. With a new revolution comes a new responsibility. We need your help.

During your exploration of the site, you might find some issues/bugs/comments/feedback brought about by the change. We need YOU to tell us about it so that we can fix it promptly. When I mean we, I mean Rieuzedx. Please continue to provide a good dosage of hazing to our new blogger. In any case, we are proud to have him with us, and he adds that he will “rot and die for the next two weeks until the new spring season starts”. We are still fixing on the avatars for each individual blogger, and that is already on our agenda once we have a bit more time.

So tell us and we offer e-cookies (chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, oreo and gooey flavor) for every little suggestion/bug/issue you propose! Thanks once again!

Rieuzedx’s Sneak Edit: My OCD is making me unbelievably angry.

    As I have just posted a few minutes ago, I was not expecting the migration to happen until the rest of the features that lady rieux was planning to include would have been settled. I just found that trappy impzie posted a formal announcement of the migration. :D

    as new posts come, the features will get tested and should there be bugs, these would be found as everyone moves on.

    Well… here’s to the new theme and the changes/shallenges to come! cheers!

    Love the new layout, except the fonts. Me thinks its a bit too small.

    The greyish font colour on the sidebars are a bit hard to see as well on my laptop’s screen.

    The font in the comments needs to be larger, it’s an eyesore at the moment.

  4. Posted March 27, 2008 at 1:06 am | Permalink

    Using the latest version of Firefox 2…

    1. Issue: Spelled “visit” wrong on the support portion of the sidebar.
    2. Bug/Issue: Archives page needs some fixing.
    3. Issue: Spring 2008 Blogging List? Moar liek, Winter 2007/2008 Blogging List, m i rite?
    4. Comment: No blogroll.
    5. Suggestion: Please show more entries per page (not the front page, but for Author, Category, and Monthly Archive pages).
    6. Suggestion: For individual posts, I personally think that the title of the post should at least be shown above the content; perhaps it may be just some getting used to.
    7. Comment: Excellent font size XD let the bastards turn up their browser text size. Nah, I wouldn’t mind keeping them the same size as the other text of the page. Or better yet, use some Javascript to add some text size changing feature.
    8. Issue: Using the Search option, I got this issue: http://img257.imageshack.us/img257/3816/errorbj9.png It’s purely aesthetic, but it still nags me.
    9. Issue/Bug?: When I’m already logged in, it still shows Log-In in the top right corner. I’m not sure if that’s actually a bug or it’s not dependent on my log-in status.

    @KaeBoo
    I’m totally a guy.

    @Nekonron
    I’ll probably end up making the fonts a wee bit bigger. They gray font on the sidebar will get changed, it’s legibility isn’t the greatest by far.

    @Owen S
    Yes, the fonts are too small in the comments. Yes, I’ll fix that. I’m irritable, and the word “eyesore” made me want to break something.

    @Icy
    1)thanks, noted
    2&5)archive page is a bitch, it’ll get updated when I feel like taking the time to kick several kittens through glass windows in order to relieve the frustration it’s going to cause.
    3)That’s not up to me, that’s up to Impz. That page is a placeholder until we figure out who’s doing what.
    4)Blogroll is going to be a linked page. Should be up with the next 24hrs.
    6)Get used to it, I like it.
    7)I don’t like huge fonts, but I do agree that they should all be turned up a notch or two.

    @Everyone, I guarantee you that a number of “issues” you find are things that I know about that will be fixed. I’ve been working on this for three days straight. Keep the thoughts coming, but please…be courteous, think happy thoughts, and don’t make me go all kung-fu on your a$$. xD Cheers!

    i don’t know… you may totally be a guy through and through but “lady rieux” just has a nice ring to it… ;) :D

    here’s some e-cookies and ice cream to cool that head off… hehehe

    great job and keep up the good overwork.

    Gah…lady rieux…hell no.

    @Myu & Omar
    Thanks guys.

    @Impz
    ugh.

    @Igunis
    Part of the slow loading is probably due to animeblogger.net’s servers. The speed is perfect for me on the test site. The bigger factor though, is the fact that your browser has to re-cache all the new images, css, layout etc. Still I’m gonna see if there’s anything I can do (code-wise) to make it ninja fast.

    And Owen’s the eyesore!

    wow, now if we only have someone like rieuzedx in our team (or if I at least had the same l33t skillz and dedication as him), then our blog would’ve undergone the site revamp we’ve been planning for ages :P

    as for the font, it is a bit straining to the eyes, for size and font style (omgz Times New Roman?! @_@) reasons. But overall, real nifty~! :3

  17. Posted March 27, 2008 at 3:45 pm | Permalink

    Yup, I think the words are too small and when we comment, is the font Times New Romans? *gasp* I hate that font, LOL! Like the new layout overall, especially the sxc banners! >

    Part of the slow loading is probably due to animeblogger.net’s servers.
    Umm, no offense here, but please don’t blame our servers when you’re causing the higher load and slowing them down. First off the cache has to be rebuilt because the theme changed and that greatly increases server load until the cache is rebuilt. Do note that every time you change something it’s going to need to be rebuilt, it would have been best to have the theme complete before making it live. Then there’s the header image rotation. On the old theme we had long ago changed that to be driven by Javascript instead of PHP on purpose — to offload the CPU usage to the client. While it’s a small calculation, with the traffic the site gets (and added to the rest of the traffic the server has to handle in addition), it adds up very fast, and thus it’s increased server load as well. (In fact the rotation script had the highest CPU usage of any script on the site, which is why we changed it to Javascript.) The new theme calls its stylesheet as a PHP file instead of just the plain CSS file that the old script did, this adds greatly to server load. The Recent Comments section seems to not be using the old plugin and that may (or may not, I’m not sure yet) be contributing to the increased load as well. Suffice it to say, I’m seeing noticeably increased load since you changed the theme, and yes it is slowing the site down, and everyone else on the server.

    The bigger factor though, is the fact that your browser has to re-cache all the new images, css, layout etc.
    No, the biggest factor is the new theme has greatly increased CPU usage of your site — at least double. It’s causing some major problems.

    Still I’m gonna see if there’s anything I can do (code-wise) to make it ninja fast.
    If you’re thinking of doing things with PHP to try to speed things up, don’t. It will only further increase server load and slow all the sites on the server down even more.

    I saw something about a theme switcher in the other post, I’m not sure that’s a good idea. I’m pretty sure it’ll cause havoc with the cache and greatly increase server load to a point of crashing it. So, do not add a theme switcher please.

    Also, why is the image saying “THAT animeblog version 3.0″ in the upper right loading off of Photobucket? If Photobucket’s servers are slow/not responding (and I’ve seen that often) it’ll delay the page load for everything else.

    BTW, I don’t mean to come across as negative, but having my server load jump up suddenly is not fun. And like I’ve pointed out, this is impacting several blogs, not just this one, so there’s some other unhappy people as well. This isn’t minor either, load’s gone up rather significantly and is causing major headaches. Normally a theme change wouldn’t be a big problem, but since THAT Anime Blog is the #2 site on AB for traffic, it’s causing problems.

    ._. we have changed it back to the old template. As Rieu is not feeling very well now, we are going to fix it later. -_-;;

    It’s looking pretty good. Redoing a theme for a site like this can be rather painful and time consuming. I spent a good deal of time when I switched my site over to a new theme/design as well. I just hope your new site doesn’t break with 2.5 :D . Not that I’ve heard any problems with WP 2.5, but I usually keep my site updates down to a minimum when I’m anticipating upgrading soon.

    I actually like the links above the header there too. *takes notes*

    I just had a question: where do you usually get your (large) pictures for the header (I’ve wondered this about other sites too). A lot of it looks like fan art, so it is just stuff you guys do yourself, or you just find it and bum it off, or is there some anime art place that is secretly lurking on the internets? Or does everyone just go to 4-chan?

    Some really interesting comments from Maestro regarding certain blog features that do not scale well with increased size!

    - Is the blogroll going to be returning?
    - Putting the title and author link in the sidebar of post-single pages seems a bit non-intuitive.
    - Grey fonts could be darker to make text easier to read.
    - Line breaks are stripped from comments, making comments less readable.

    The avatars are a combination of Danny’s Avatar plugin for WordPress and a good deal of frustrating css semi-hacking.

    @Josh
    I built the site on WordPress 2.5 (the test version or whatev), so other than a few tweaks here and there for the final version, it should be absolutely fine. Also, animepaper is a killer site for scans if you can donate/contribute for spending papers. Other than that, google+aggrivating search results.

    @KaeBoo
    So far, I’ve been pretty happy with the Wii. Mario Galaxy is rockin’ my socks. I needed about 12 kittens for when I was trying to fix the comments this morning. -.-

    @Steven DB
    It’s a sticky post so that when the original post gets pushed off the page, people who visit the site will still know what’s going on. A nice feature for important announcement posts and news.

    @Everyone
    Still working on the blogroll, after that I’ll be working on giving the OP comments their own distinguished color. That’s something that wasn’t a part of the theme, so I’ll have to research it a bit and see if I has the programming skills to get it to work. It’s a nice feature that I enjoy, it’ll just take some work.

    Found the IE7 issue. Noted my laptop did manage to load the site so copied the IE settings over. Lo and behold, this computer’s IE decided to load the page. So went to fix the vista one and click the settings one by one.

    The fix: Turn off use HTTP1.1 in the options–>advanced–>HTTP1.1

    Can the geniuses among us explain why that causes things things to bork?
