Well Ranka’s latest coup de main offensive not only allowed her to sieze the initaitve away from Sheryl but has Ran Ran Ranka celebrating while Suki Suki Sheryl members are lamenting how a little fever dealt the most severe blow to their confident songstress. My suggestion is to join the fence sitters and broken folks at Ai Ai Alto-hime, that way there is no way you can possibly lose unless Kawamori turns emo for no good reason. There also has been much eye gouging over the return of Basara Nekki tactics, but in their case I just smile at watching their daze and confusion after having their Macross cherries popped or in some cases re-popped. Truly for first time viewers the experience is much akin to being on the receiving end of shock and awe (i.e. Macross Frontier seized control of the environment and paralyzed or so overloaded a viewer’s perceptions and understanding of events that the audience would be incapable of resistance at the tactical and strategic levels). Welcome to Macross comrades, ain’t it awesome? Old vets cannot help but laugh at these complaints; at least Ranka was not Basara, now that, comrades, was an exercise in pain. So just thank Kawamori for making it a Ranka concert rather than a live Fire Bomber one with VF-19s. In any case I don’t think that Ranka has just paved the way for herself, not yet anyway, and while Impz is in denial there are hints that Ranka might have a more important role to play than to be the companion of Alto-hime.

So it seems Mr. “Relief” who had earned the ire of Klein-sama is a clone son of Kamijin and has inherited his father’s ineptitude as Ogotai son of Britai was able to best him in the ring of honor. Either that or Seven Colored Carrots really don’t love him and gave Relief Kamijin a big case of the stupid and indigestion. Suffice to say that it was not his plan and I suspect that it was Grace who was controlling him from behind the scenes and was the someone who had ratted Alto-hime out when he tried to re-take his metal gear VF-25 in a rare instance of Solid-hime action. If Grace was the one pulling Relief’s strings then she is truly the master of Keikakku Doori, because I am not sure if she even did anything at all. At any rate poor Alto-hime had to put up with being locked in a tower to await rescue.

On the Home Front Ozma was kicking himself for letting Pilot-hime go off on a mission alone, while the bridge crew was similarly distraught at being unable to sally forth to rescue Alto-hime. If Wilder is correct in that Kamijin was too stupid to come up with such an elaborate scheme then Grace is indeed formidable. Nevertheless the events have forced Cathy and Ozma together, while Leon is busy trying to take notes from Grace’s lessons and President Glass makes a private faux pas regarding Zentradi. Ranka has ended her worship of Sheryl and is only concerned with the rescue of Alto-hime from the clutches of un-cultured Zentrans. Mikhail thinks it’s impossible, but Luca being a TF2 class Engineer has a practical solution to their problem. It seems that either, perhaps even both, his data from the battle in episode seven when he scanned that big Vajra Capital ship’s folding technology and/or the data LAI got from looking over Brera’s VF-27 allowed them to develop a more efficient fold drive. So in this regard it was not deus ex machina as it was subtly hinted that over coming fold distortions was possible since Brera had to come from somewhere and that Vajra Battleship over came a fold distortion to destroy the Kaitos. Basically Luca is to Alto-hime what Q was to James Bond.

So Sheryl is out of commission while Kamijin tries to defeat Ogotai, but Ranka arrives with Mikhail in tow to turn the Zentradi mutineers into a bunch of Ran Ran Ranka fanboys because they were vulnerable to green haired lolis with fangs, no doubt they will soon hear of Impz… Even if it made absolutely no sense what so ever there already has been a precedent for music to beat out bullets, so if it really irritated you I suggest you lay down your key board and surrender immediately and unconditionally. THIS IS MACROSS, (kicks Persian ambassador down a well). In any case it was a great concert, and it was delightful to see all those Zentrans lay down their weapons for a concert that puts the USO to shame. Oh and Kawamori owes me one dancing Queadluun for I had wished that a gif might be made of it…Lousy stupid Kamijin clone. Well at least like the VF-25 the Queadluun also has personality with them capable of dancing and shaking their heads in denial. Kamijin learned the hard way what a formidable opponent that Alto-hime was with, slip turn and coup de grace via knife shortly after his Queadluun overshot.

Her operation a success and with Kamijin vanquished by Alto-hime, Ranka gets a ride on Alto-hime’s VF-25 as Alto-hime enjoyed Sheryl’s gift to the fullest. Sheryl was visibly shaken but allowed Ranka to take her place in the navigator’s seat. Their ride is cut short by an evil eye, so Pilot-hime and Super Dimensional Cinderella make an emergency landing near a wrecked Macross ship. I assume it was a relic left by the Supervision Army rather than being the SDF-1, also the presence of a possible bird man on Gallia 4 indicates that Ranka has a special connection with them as well as the Vajra. Next time Kabuki-hime and SDC-Ranka get a lot of accidental alone time, though Brera seems keen to mix things up a bit…

The Bridge Crew was thoroughly disappointed at not being able to rescue Alto-hime with Macross Quarter. The poll results show that they are not top contenders either.
So Ranka shares some connection with the birdman in addition to the Vajra, and this leads me to believe that if she does intend on keeping Alto-hime she will have to pull a Sara Nome and take him with her. If Ranka is indeed special enough to be the heir apparent to the latest legacy of Protoculture and Ruler of Vajra then I have grave doubts about her being able to reject all that and the responsibility for a mortal existence with Alto-hime. Even as she made progress on the Alto-hime front, Ranka is only at the blushing furiously stage and not the equals’ stage the Sheryl got to. I just hope that Ranka doesn’t fall back into old habits and start rambling about herself to Alto-hime. Ranka was able to finally say something to Alto-hime, but it was not all on her own and Ranka received no shortage of help from Nanase who is obviously hiding some yuri affections for SDC-Ranka. Alto-hime wanted to go back with Sheryl initially, but Mikhail forced him to consider Ranka’s feelings. The fact that overly nice and overly polite Alto-hime seemed a bit artificial was also a bad sign of sorts since Kabuki-hime was acting. I am sure that in regards to Ranka Alto-hime wants to be polite, but I still don’t see sparks flying or any overtures coming from his side. At this rate Alto-hime will remain pretty much as he was, but only now more polite and aware of Ranka as a girl who has a crush on him. Ranka has much to do if she wants Alto-hime to look at her as woman and not an otome with a crush. Hopefully Ranka will press her advantage and get at least one profound heart to heart conversation with Alto-hime.

At the very least SDC-Ranka has given up on her hero worship of Sheryl and demonstrated that her fangs were not just for show, with nary a mention of Sheryl in the whole episode. I suppose that Ranka is now able to go all out in her competition with Sheryl. Unfortunately it will all be for nothing if Alto-hime doesn’t see Ranka in a romantic light, since Pilot-hime seemed a bit more concerned with his VF-25 than Ranka… Even on Ranka’s part I cannot help but question her ability to allow her beloved Alto-hime to go off into combat. Her begging of Mikhail to save Alto-hime rather than help hime mop up was not quite a vote of confidence in Alto-hime’s piloting abilities. Given that Ozma is no longer really a part of her life any more, with the new idol gig it remains to be seen if Ranka can let Alto-hime do his job when the situation turns really shitty. Ranka still has dissociative amnesia and if Alto-hime really gets hurt at some point Ranka’s ability to recover are questionable and her ability to let hime go out again for another sortie after such an event seem slim. The other great unknown is Brera, who remains a likely nii-san candidate, and surely he will have a role in determining Ranka’s destiny.

Sheryl remained astonishingly selfless even in sickness as she put Alto-hime’s gift first over her own health. It seems that Sheryl only had Alto-hime on her mind and basically wrecked her own immune system in order to make her gift of a real sky possible for Alto-hime. Given that Sheryl gave up far more for her gift than Ranka, I think even as Pilot-hime was enjoying his gift with a slight sense of guilt was prodding him as well. Sheryl also seems keen on treating Ranka as competition after this and the overall strategic situation remains in her favor even if Ranka has the tactical initiative. Sheryl’s star was going to fade eventually, but is her decline starts in full force then Sheryl will need all her wits and abilities to carve out a new identity for herself. Even if she needs help Alto-hime is pretty much all the support she has got since Mikhail and Nanase seem keen on pushing forward Ranka’s cause. With Nanase it’s pretty much clear cut, but with Mikhail I think he’s just out to give Ranka a fair shot. Given how Alto-hime is always willing to lend a hand Sheryl’s fall from grace need not be undertaken by Sheryl alone. If Sheryl can overcome the consequences of her fall then she will be all the stronger for it. Her true test begins now that Ranka is ascendant and Sheryl is now on the defensive. I just hope Sheryl opts for mobile defense and promoting Alto-hime’s happiness rather than digging in and trying to duke it out with Ranka in battle of attrition. Sheryl can still be Queen of Pilots at Miboshi even if Ranka takes the crown of Queen Idol.

Alto-hime seems to have stepped into a battleground of eggs loaded with dynamite and right now I see that his new found awareness of Ranka is not necessarily the first pangs of romance, but furious blushing at being the center of attention and indeed affection. Where in the past ever suitor who came up to hime was ignored or not even noticed Ranka has been given a clear shot by Mikhail. Clearly Alto-hime is new at this love thing and probably has never turned down a girl directly ever before. Unlike Mikhail he doesn’t have the luxury of playing it all off as a man whore, so if Alto-hime is not interested in Ranka romantically it will be some time before he comes up with an answer as he vainly hopes that Ranka will grow out of her crush. Nevertheless Alto-hime is not so callous as to blast Ranka out of his sky immediately, so Ranka has a fighting chance if she has the courage to exploit it. In regards to Sheryl it seems that Alto-hime was ready and willing to save Sheryl and was visibly concerned about her well being after vanquishing Kamijin. When time comes where Sheryl is desperate need of help I doubt Alto-hime will allow Sheryl to suffer alone. Either way Alto-hime will have to choose sooner or later, but right now it seems that in hime’s eyes, Ranka is more imouto than lover and Sheryl more chum than girlfriend.
Kamijin is planning and insurrection and he must be stopped.

Hm…Sheryl and Ranka play nice over Alto? I think the rabid fans in both camps want nothing more than the opposite :p Although it would be nice if they were able to stay level-headed about this, when it’s love at stake people can get very nasty. And I think that it would be difficult for Sheryl to be anything other than very bitter right now – Alto and her spotlight were both taken from her immediate reach. She seems to have a lot of pride so I can’t see her taking it lying down.

I can’t stop giggling at this episode. Who didn’t expect it’s going to turn out this way ever since episode 5? I still think there’s going to be some major Sheryl development after this, one in which everyone will be confused who ends up with who, but at the end of everything, the ping pong ball will still go back to Ranka’s court. It’s more romantic that way–it started with Ranka, it ends with Ranka. ^.^
Besides, the vibe the show’s been giving everytime Alto and Ranka are together gives you that “main couple” vibe–if you know what I mean. lol Neko Nikki song is the perfect song to describe them. Innocent and adorable. <3
Using a Sting and the Police song was genius (jenius?) and the MGS jokes were brilliant. However, you missed out by not making a Planet of the Apes joke at the SDF-1′s appearance at the end by quoting Chuck Heston’s famous lines “Oh my God. I’m back. I’m home. All the time, it was… We finally really did it.” (and upon seeing the ruined Earth, or in this case Macross)”You Maniacs! You blew it up! Ah, damn you! God damn you all to hell!”
Also, on whether or not the ship is the SDF-1, you have to take into account that the Carriers were taken out when the ship was refit sometime in 2012. Hence, if you’ve seen Macross Plus, it now has those ares we see today.
since Macross 7 i always thought it a waste that they eject the ‘Fold Machine’ once they get to one place and never seem to pick it up again… now at the least it makes sense in that they leave it with other equipment in orbit…
as for who Alto-hime will choose… isn’t it likely that he’ll get neither of them?

I have to say I felt really bad for Sheryl this episode, it had to really cut deep to have to lay there and listen to Ranka wow the crowds. Then of course she gets to go home sick knowing her rival is up sharing the skies with her crush.
As for the fight getting nasty, I don’t know that Ranka would have it in her to go that far and that may end up being the deciding factor. Sheryl has been in the business long enough to know the world can be cut throat and if you want something you have to go get it.
So far she’s been subtle about what she wants because she isn’t sure I guess. But if she were to get really, really serious about Alto-hime, I’m not sure that Ranka could compete.
I mean even for this strategic maneuver (<— spelling it that way is so wrong, it should have an o! Sorry the Brit in me is leaking out, its your fault Crusader for using Police lyrics) she required the help of Michel and Nanase.
In fact she probably is totally unaware she’s initiating the war for Alto-hime’s love. Since she was just so focused on him (though seriously who can blame the girl, I mean he’s cute enough to have two girls trying to win him over.)

Haha I love it! Someone needs to make some ’300′ mashups for Frontier (and perhaps Code Geass).
No way that’s the SDF-1, no ship for arms, and beside’s the SDF-1 is on Earth (as shown in Macross Plus even if that was 17 years ago in this timeline).
It’s still too early to predict this story at least in terms of the girls, there are way too many threads to go. Both girls have interesting clues that show that they may yet still play a larger part in the overall story if not just the love part of it all.
Sheryl’s last name is ‘Nome’ of Zero fame, and of course right now it seems that her manager Grace is some kind of behind the scenes conspirator. Will Sheryl become an even greater pawn, and will she ultimately discover this and right things (or die trying?) in the end?
Ranka meanwhile has shown reactions from the ‘evil eye’ and of course from the Vajura themselves. There are many possibilities, ranging from her SPIRITIA SONG ENERGY power having the force to awaken Vajura, to her being an actual modified being representing the ANTI-SPIRA..er vajura. Will the ultimate end for her be a sacrifice for all that is good, will she be saved by hime before this is possible or what?

The Macross hasn’t had ships for arms ever since Macross Flashback 2012. Official explanation was that the ship was refitted with the new arms after Kamjin the original blew them up while trying to play chicken with it.

Sheryl was not quite in good flight status for her to have gone, and it is doubtful that Alto-hime would have allowed a sick Sheryl to go on a flight when she was passing out moments before.

No nano machines please I just got a good beating from Vamp just now. As for planet of the Apes I just had to make decisions regarding screen caps, suffice to say Ranka demanded most of them. The Police are one of my favorite bands, hard to believe that Sting was once a humble person like Ranka.

Sheryl will have a lot of recovering to do but I think she can still keep strong enough for a tight finish. I hope things will be down to the wire. If Ranka starts going Minmay and Brera turns out to be Kaifun II then we will have some problems.
I don’t think Sheryl is going to start playing rough not yet anyway. Besides if she knows Alto-hime then she will not do anything distasteful. After all it was her nice apologetic face that made Alto-hime confused…
If Ranka can manage on her own she will be formidable indeed, having Nanase and Mikhail is nice, but one should not become dependent on Allies.

Its still a bit early but as we have already seen Kawamori likes leaving little things to give us some hints. After all Kawamori himself showed up one episode ahead of his major appearance…so its worth looking at how many hints Kawamori is setting up. What Grace is doing is not necessarily bad, but her motives remain mysterious. Nevertheless i am sure Grace is not out to destroy the human race or try and meddle with things man ought not to.

Whether or not it is the SDF-1, I’m pretty sure that it’s not a protoculutre relic. The previews show a shot of it accompanied by Guantanamo class carriers from Macross 7. Maybe, it’s the prop from Do You Remember Love?
For now, I say we follow the lead of the folks over at Macross World and dub it the WTF-1.
That should be the O.G Macross, it has the ARMD carrier arms which were put onto it after the end of Macross. It’s not a Megaroad class ship because those are 5x longer than the Macross (since Megaroads are colony ships), can’t transform and look completely different.
The Macross was last seen in Macross Plus which took place 19 years before Frontier in 2040, the preview seems to show it in action again since it’s out in space with ARMD carrier arms and support ships. Why they got the legendary relic out for action again… well I guess next episode will tell us.
No, the WTF-1 is a actually a secret base built by the Secret Society of Meltrans to trap Alto-hime so that they can work their magic and release his inner Meltran! (Admit it, no matter what the official explanation is, mine is the one you wish were true).

Luca is an engineer he can solve practical problems, we shall see if he is able to put down his machines for a second and start wooing Nanase. I do agree however that Nanase can’t compete with Alto-hime.
You know, Alto could have very well stopped the whole battle if he had just complied with the hostile commander’s demands to sing. I bet if the Princess had just don his kabuki costume and makeup, he would have stirred up the same kind of reaction Ranka did.
I am sure Alto-hime could have been able to pull it off, but there were no costumes on hand for another Sakura-hime Azuma Bunsho… I think Kawamori is holding out on us and that Alto-hime will be the next big singer beating out both Ranka and Sheryl.
Joking aside I hope that Alto-hime will have at least one duet, preferably two one with Sheryl and one with Ranka.
Maybe Luca will win her over by making her a Ranka-bot of her very own…

Sheryl and Ranka play nice over Alto.If you take a look at how they´ve “played” sofar I can´t say it´s nice to eachother….I just hope they don’t start shooting bullets at one another.OH, I forgot that MYMP is a cover band.
