BBAAAWWWWWWWWWW
Uh…..that was messed up, and I even knew it was coming. The spoilers for this episode were pretty rampant, but aside from the end there were quite a few new developments and story lines progressing. Overall though, the episode was almost entirely focused on Shirley and her struggles.
New OP- “WORLD END” by FLOW

A pretty good song by FLOW once again, it just feels right having them do the OP for this show. The new OP animation wise looks pretty good but I preferred the first one’s way of showing more action and the multi-character displays. But the best part of the new OP is mass speculation on scenes shown in it. Such as Toudou fighting at some huge complex (probably geass-related), the Gurren getting a new upgrade (Lancelot gets a similar upgrade), fights in space (lets not go too Gundam here gents), Sayoko in her Otome gear, and C.C. looking delicious as always.
Impressions

This whole beginning scene was pretty creepy. I did like the imagery though, because if you suddenly got several versions of memories back at once you’d be confused too. Especially considering she’s running around Ashford, a place filled with elite soldiers, geass users, and a bunch of people that have been geassed.
This was in the extended preview from last week, but now we get to see it in a quality that’s readable (you can click the image above for a full-size version). I just found it amusing how he ranked all of his folks, especially the completely useless Tamaki. Other things that popped up at me were the low loyalty values of Toudou’s underlings, who don’t really like Zero all that much but just follow Toudou all around. It’s a good thing Toudou is the smart one and knows to follow Zero, the only person with a chance to really succeed, whether he agrees with his reasons or not.

This scene was much less creepy the first time watching this episode. I was thinking to myself, well there goes Rolo being dere dere as usual. I guess he doesn’t really mind that Lelouch is doing this all for Nunally and his mother, because they share some similar goals. Well now, I guess that TURNED OUT TO BE SLIGHTLY WRONG.

Oh shit, it’s Athrun…er Suzaku sporting the coolshades from last season. That is some stylish stuff he’s wearing there, where can I get some?

ORANGE-KUN! While the whole blade coming out of your arm gig isn’t particularly original, it still looks badass on him. With his outfit, hair, and mechanics he just looks pretty pimp, ready to roll out and be the best Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain that he can be! Go Orange-kun!

So uh, I guess they really are twins, eh? I’m starting to like Cornelia again, she sees a creepy kid walk up and just throws a knife in his forehead. No mercy.

*Shudder* They are speaking pretty metaphorically here, and while they say somewhat similar things that Lelouch says, I doubt it’s the same means. If you look back on the various Gundam series (from which CG often draws parallels) you have the same goal (stopping fighting) but very different means of achieving it. On one side the good guys just want a big happy peace treaty, while the bad guys want to commit genocide or re-write people’s genes to accomplish the same thing. It’s probably something similar here, but we don’t quite know the details yet.

No, my Supameido!!!!! Thankfully she made it out alive, but she was pretty damn badass in a fight. A Shinozaki ninja indeed. What was surprising is how Villetta reacted to the whole thing, in the end she seems to be on Lelouch’s side. Whether she really didn’t think Orange-kun could beat Lelouch and just wanted to protect herself, or whether her feelings for Ougi, knowing Lelouch personally, and knowing about geass means she really will side with him in the end.
Edit- Sunrise is brilliant, ninja Sayoko fanservice.

This scene was a bit silly, but I suppose it was necessary for the requisite change of heart. She couldn’t kick the bucket hating Lelouch, so she had to see him express his anguish at losing almost everything. I had quite a chuckle at the waves of hate flowing between Suzaku and Lelouch, and how sad it is that Suzaku is too retarded to figure out that Lelouch has been tricking him this whole time about his memories.

Been awhile since the last keikaku doori face. If you didn’t pick up on it, we are getting a preview of his future plans here with this train. Whatever his next move is, one part of the plan is shutting Tokyo down with the gefjun disturber train of doom. Reminds me a bit of Batman Begins.

Quite a twist here, with Orange declaring his loyalty to Marianne rather than V.V. because he was her bodyguard that failed to protect her. I did not expect him to switch sides like that, but the loyalties on this show are not exactly solid. You gotta figure that Lelouch is going to turn a few more Brittanians, because he can’t do it by himself with just the Black Knights (without Kallen I might add) and Rolo (who’s fucking crazy).
To be honest I shouldn’t have been that surprised, now that I’ve gone back and watched the State 4.33 Picture Drama again. Said clip shows Jeremiah’s past as Marianne’s bodyguard on that day, and goes over the circumstances. He becomes quite emotional over the loss of Marianne and her children, even choking up in tears. Last season he did not know Lelouch was Zero, and instead only knew Zero as the man who ruined him. This season he learned the truth and wants to join up with him, we’ll see if it holds. It’s amazing that fan support brought such a character back…

If you didn’t already know it was coming from spoilers or all the previous hints, this should have been a gigantic waving death flag. You know that as soon as the useless rabu rabu girl wants to join up with the terrorist that things won’t end well. Plus, someone hadn’t been killed off in awhile so her time was up.

Dear Ms. Fenette,
Unfortunately, your application to join the Order of the Black Knights has been denied.
-Rolo
As I read the symbolism here is that Rolo’s mask of the nice otouto trying to help out his brother is falling off. Instead he’s back to being batshit insane like in earlier episodes. I was raging pretty hard because initially I had thought Orange was going to kill her off and then get whacked by Lelouch’s rage. Instead the little otouto yaoi bait offs her without Lelouch even knowing he did it, the little bastard. Definitely needs to get killed off now -_-

If this scene does anything for the rest of the series, it tells us that once Orange-kun cancels a geass it can be reapplied. That has all sorts of fun applications (*cough* Suzaku *cough*) that I’m sure each one of us can smile about. Truly, the team of Lelouch+Orange-kun is one badass combination in the fight against Brittania. This also means that Lelouch is free to toss Rolo out the door ASAP because he isn’t a threat to kill him any longer. With Orange he can just shut Rolo down and kill him easy peasy.

The writers laid it on pretty thick, trying to make her all the more tragic. Overall, I felt her death wasn’t handled that great. I would have preferred if it happened last season during the Mao arc, rather than this rushed job here. It just doesn’t seem like it fits in with the rest of the plot. Well, what it does mean is we won’t be seeing much of Ashford anymore, that’s for sure.
New ED- “Waga Routashi Aku no Hana” by ALI PROJECT

Another forgettable Ali Project song that sounds like every other Ali Project song. The new art was nowhere near as good as the first ED. The imagery and sensuality of the previous art was just on a higher level. Making Millay have huge boobs and adding the loli pair doesn’t really save this ED.
Next Episode:

Low quality extended preview of episode 14.
Now that Lelouch knows where the cult is, it looks like he’s about to start a raid to avenge Shirley’s death. With Cornelia being held there this opens up all sorts of possibilities, and we will have a party at Crusader’s house when she inevitably joins the Black Knights. From the extended preview we can see Nunally approaching a woman in a Brittanian dress (99 percent chance that it’s Kallen from the body type, plot, and some sketches that have been released). P.S.- V.V. is one creepy little fellow, I don’t care how old he really is when he looks like that.
Crusader’s Angry Drunken Rant
On top of old Smokey
All covered with blood
I lost my poor Shirley
When Rolo sneezed
She rolled off Nina’s table
And onto the floor
And then my poor Shirley
Rolled out of the door
She rolled in Millay’s garden
And under Villeta’s bush
And then my poor Shirley
Was nothing but mush
Alright now
I’ll tell you the words
And you sing it back to me
On top of old Smokey
All covered with blood
I lost my poor Shirley
When Rolo sneezed
She rolled off Nina’s table
And onto the floor
And then my poor Shirley
Rolled out of the door
She rolled in Millay’s garden
And under Villeta’s bush
And then my poor Shirley
Was nothing but mush
Oh, the mush was as tasty
As tasty could be
And early next summer
It grew into fleas
The fleas were all covered
With ugly moss
It grew lovely Shirleys
And vag, errr…tomato sauce
So if you eat like Shirely
All covered with “cheese”
Hold on to your meat stick balls
And don’t let Rolo sneeze
Hooray Rolo finally killed someone! I don’t give two shits if it was that mother fucker Shirley, fucking bitch wanted le Douche’s pen0r so bad that she forgot all about the man who raised her and wanted to help his murderer kill more innocents. So fuck her, fuck her in the eye. Fuck her love for le Douche the only one who is going to enjoy le Douche’s gonads will be Rolo. I hope Rolo makes le Douche and every lulufag out there to cry some more. So cry! CRY!
O Rly?
I see we have a heretic…
There is Haruhi-sama the one and true Goddess.
Milady the Cult of Assassins would have been proud of you.
Fucking Orange-kun changed sides in one go, never mind he nearly killed the meido, but let’s welcome the guy who was sent to kill dear leader, but okay fine whatever fucking le Douche is fool any way. Some new state he’s building, one where you cannot disagree with dear leader…hooray! I just hope Rolo starts offing people who get too close to his dear nii-san. I suggest the next target be Kaguya, that fucking failure. I have not forgotten Kaguya! I am slow to forget and even slower to forgive. So go Rolo I hope you break Prince Ali’s kill count and kill off as many people as you can to make Lulu le Douche cry some more. I felt most pleased to see the bastard cry his un-manly tears. I hope he loses everything or at least knowing Sunrise and a good end for the prick I hope he loses a lot for his mother fucking big brother state.
Screw teenagers, fucking worthless parasites sucking up hard earned cash.
In other words it doesn’t matter what you think!
:3
So my Cornelia-hime earned her salt once again and threw a knife right into V2’s little noggin. Too bad he has armor hax like C2, fucking cheap bastards. In any case Cornelia gets locked up for a while, I hope she escapes during the confusion. Insta-killing Geass users is always a good policy given how they all turn out to be emo ass-hats, I hope Lulu le Douche gets it next. I will believe in my Princess until the very end and I hope she will be her own woman and not need some fucking pansy to do all the thinking for her. Sure Calawain wants to start a party at my house if and when it happens (the key word being “if”), but ‘if” it happens rest assured that Castle Law is still in force and I will up my arsenal with a Barrett M82.

This was a sad ending for Shirley but you kinda had to see it coming (even without the spoilers). Sunrise had to find someway to sever Lelouch’s ties with Ashford somehow. This is really the most effective way to do it.
As for all the Rolo hate I’ve seen posted on the internets, I think it’s a bit misdirected. Rolo is/was an assassin. Killing people is the only thing he’s known his entire life. If people thought Rolo was “tamed” just because Lelouch took him in, they were dead wrong and Rolo proved it in this episode.
He identified Shirley as a threat. Someone who could/would take away the ONLY family he’s ever known in his ENTIRE life and he eliminated her, just like any trained assassin would do.
Good for him! Sucks for a lot of other people who were hoping for a happy ending with Shirley and Lelouch but if anyone really thought that this show was going to have a cliched happy ending they haven’t been watching the last 30+ episodes.
The only thing in this episode that seemed really, really ridiculous is how easily Orange-kun switched sides especially after all that big talk he had with V.V a few episodes back about Lelouch being powerless against him.
WTF? He went from being a total badass to a crying emo fgt in record time. You know what’s underneath all those cybernetics? A high tech mp3 player that does nothing but loop Dashboard Confessional and Coldplay all day long.
Props to Sunrise for giving us NinjaMeido fanservice. I can now die a happy man. How many episodes left before we get Cornelia in some compromising panty shots/shower scenes/table humping?
It seems from the OP that the tech wars will continue until someone builds a supermassive Knightmare that’s the size of the milky way and throws galaxies like frisbees at Britannia… oh wait…wrong show.
Now if only they’d kill off the rest of the worthless background characters and focus on the central conflict between Lelouch and the Emperor we could actually be getting somewhere.
SO MUCH EXCESS BAGGAGE!!
All in all, Good episode. Can’t wait for the next.
The only thing that irks me about this episode is all the SuzakuxKallen fanboys out there because of one 3 second clip from the OP of their Knightmares being together.
Unless the Emperor rewrites her memories I don’t think she’s giving up her rabu rabu for Lelouch/Zero.
oh and more Cornelia is good as she’s become the only GAR character in this show.
Every other male character is doing a piss poor impression of Shinji from EVA.
I’M SO RACKED WITH GUILT AND ANGST!!! MUST….EXERCISE MY DEMONS…THROUGH MASSIVE ROBOT FIGHTS…WHILE CRYING IN THE COCK PIT….
I’ve never seen more males cry as much in a shounen series in my life.
uh, lots of lulu haet i see.
Lot’s of drama.
;_______________;
Requesting a Shirley memorial post, NOW!
Or lelouch will just burn the blog down……..
As messed up as it is, i feel rolo killing shirley is WAY to simple for the code geass series.
I Think there will be a huge plot behind this that will kill rolo, or someone else came there, and rolo tried protecting shirely, that would truely be a sunrise plot, and would give viewers a twitch in the eye.
But, i hate deaths like this where the charector was developed so much that you can know what will happen next… obviously, the sign here would mean rolo is still fucked up as ever, and will possibley kill the ever-loyal maideo next..
Pretty sad.
Next person that has a likely chance of joining(even on one raid) the black knights is Cornelia, of course, they will have to add an extensive plot where lelouch heartfully denies that he purposely ordered euphie to mass murder japan.
But, A person with an iq of over 125 will be able to see most of the series from this point on. (which sunrise will destroy because of there very fun plots, and add-ons)
Anyway, i cant wait until the next episode where the chance of a raid is high, and i am ever-so-sorry of Shirely-chans death..
@Halycon
We may understand why Rolo did what he did (he’s crazy/assassin) but it doesn’t mean we can’t hate him for it. When someone kills out of jealousy in a situation like that we naturally feel angry. We even thought he was getting better and much nicer since Lelouch didn’t let him fight.
Orange-kun switched sides for a lot of reasons, I went into a small bit of detail about his past in the post, I think it generally gives a good explanation. He’s an Earl with a lot of pride and a sense of loyalty, he’s very Brittanian.
Cornelia fanservice was shown in the picture dramas too, when they all went to the beach~
@Tmoo
Crusader has a lot of pent up hate, which is why we call his section the “Angry Drunken Rant.” It in no way reflects any of my opinions :p
@LDC
It’s hard being Snoop Dee-Oh-Double-Gee?
@Izan
Doubtful, sorry sir! She was more of a side character if anything, and not one of my favorites. If god forbid they offed Kallen I’d make a memorial thread…
@Don2000105
Well technically you are right, we didn’t actually see Rolo shoot her, but it is pretty obvious what happens. But that has not stopped Sunrise in the past from screwing with us like that, but I really hope they don’t do that.
I don’t think just Lelouch saying it will convince her, she has to be shown that it was an accident. And something like V.V. screwing with Lelouch’s geass or claiming that it was his influence would do the trick. Or maybe just a heartfelt and passionate denouncing of V.V. and owning up to the accident while she watches. Who knows. Also down the line don’t forget Anya switching sides~
Shirley has probably to be the most useless Code Geass character in the entire show. More useless than Rivalz and Milly combined. Thank God for her death because she contributed absolutely nothing to the plot and to think she was billed as a main character in the very first OP of Geass.
Now that Rolo has killed her, the show can be rid of another very annoying character, Rolo who probably won’t have long to live if Lelouche has anything to say about it.
twists of fate.
in her short 17(? 18?) years of her life, Shirley Fenette did the single, greatest act in all of Code Geass’ two season: give Suzaku a hard slap on the head.
i don’t feel so bad about her being nice boated by rollo – it was bound to happen. but what sucks is that karen is missing once again. -_-”’
Finally someone “good” dies XD
Well, looks like there’s definitely not a Lulu x Shirley ending.
I’m pretty sure Rolo didn’t kill Shirley because he was jealous/crazy. He did it because Shirley mentioned Nunally(all the students at the school aren’t suppose to know that Nunally is Lelouch’s sister because they had their memories whiped). Rolo knew that Lelouch’s identity had been compromised and couldn’t allow her to live.
i’m thinking it’s more luluXC.C towards the end, and maybe C.C dies/goes away/some new-type thing in the last ep.
SO card captor with the “I’ll come to like you again”.
my respect for the meido shot up by about 1000 times. phew damn!
Wow good eye on sayoko shot. it’s almost invisible to the untrained eye.
Spoiler: In the preview the person dressed on the thrown who’s face wasn’t shown is kallen
after having first watched this raw and seeing what happened i was totally enraged at Rolo for doing that to Shirley but it got me thinking could it really be that simple that in his(Rolo’s) way of thinking he was protecting his dear Niisan or did something else happen also the wound on Shirley could have been caused by something else a gunshot perhaps so as of now i m still giving Rolo the benefit of the doubt
i really believed that Shirley’s role in this series was to be one of the anchors that held Lulu down from going to far as seen in the preview for next ep the effect of having lost Shirley is already evident
also from the preview it looks like the next on board the loony train is V.V
yeah V.V we know your immortal and all that crap but i really hoped that knife to the skull hurt like hell
Woot! Permanent Geass, finally!
@Eldar
Her purpose was to be a normal girl that’s a love interest for Lelouch, because there’s a lack of normal for the most part in this show. So she was setup to be a tragic death from the very start, the consequences of his choices.
@Biankita
Hopefully Suzaku gets more than a slap on the head in the future, maybe a knife to his gut as well.
@Blissmo
She’s out of the OP now, so yeah, I think it’s over.
@Me
I’m sure that’s going to be his explanation, but he only got angry and turned his geass on when she mentioned Nunally’s name. That’s what set him off.
@Tmoo
It’s likely either Lelouch, C.C. or both will die/pass on/melt in some way or another at the end. They’ve dropped the most hints that way in their conversations with one another.
@Justam/Phil
Sayoko is definitely going to challenge the highest ranking meidos of anime due to her awesomeness this episode.
@Darkkosmos
I haven’t seen any spoilers saying that, if you have a source feel free. I’m just going on those sketches out, as well as body type and how Nunally visited Kallen the other episode.
@Onizuka
Yeah like I said a couple of paragraphs up, he’s probably using that as a justification, even if it’s not the real reason that he was set off.
Yeah the preview does not make V.V. look like a person with all of his marbles. Also doesn’t help that he got a knife to the forehead and he smiles after he pulls it out.
@Trn
Huh?
Oh yeah, now all the chicks that want Lulu will be secretly asassinated by C.C. and her minions(e.g. Rolo). Kallen switched sides, so she is no longer needed. Our little princess Kaguya allows Lulu to have fun with whoever he wants, so she’s fine.
Next in line for being killed: Lulu’s fangirls. I’m fed up with them.
shirley is pinin’ for the fjords.
No really. the blood is just red Kool-aid. She always packs a giant pack of it.
“As messed up as it is, i feel rolo killing shirley is WAY to simple for the code geass series.

As I watched the episode, there was something I found to be quite strange.
My question is “Where was Suzaku?” Wasn’t he at the exact same place where
Rolo, Shirley, Lulu was. But he was strangely missing… (I was actually hoping
for Suzaku to save Lulu. But that didn’t happen.) Moreover, they never showed
Rolo actually killing Shirley.
Suzaku had a reason to kill Shirley too. He might have wanted Lulu to experience
the loss of losing someone he loved.
If it is Suzaku, it will be a huge surprise though.
@Crusader
If Shirley’s a bitch, then Ranka is DEFINITELY a bitch.
now who the fuck came up wit le douche thats the gayest diss ive ever heard
@Omisyth
Watch it there buddy, insulting Ranka is grounds for kanly. So be a good little boy and raep Shirley’s dead corpse to make up for your “loss”.
I dunno if this was already said, but the way I see it, Suzaku failed to protect Lelouch’s beloved, indirectly killing her. Lelouch killed Euphy, perhaps this is some sort of retribution and at best, they will see it that way. At worst, this will fuel the fire.
I doubt Rolo killed Shirley, and the only person who could admit this to Lelouch (if he did kill Shirley) is Rolo himself. If and when he does, Lelouch’s reaction will overpower his practical use of Rolo as a tool. But now that Orange is on their side, Rolo’s presence and twisted loyalty might have outlived its usefulness. I want to say more but i’m getting a new bike.
Am I the only one yelling: BANZAI! @ Shirley’s death? (:
Because to be honest, I never found Shirley to be a character that’s well worth my time to analyze. I think the animators never really gave her a chance for growth besides having her yelling how much she loves Lulu. Ah but that’s just my opinion. I’m probably biased because I favor C.C. a whole lot. Heh.
Well, if all I knew about Geass was what could be seen from this episode;
Suzaku Kururugi, first responder. Will put an end to the ghettos.
Lelouch vi Britania, mind-controller of first responders that they would be his canon-fodder. Will avenge himself on his father for letting his mother be assasinated and his sister blinded and crippled.
Shirly Fenette, terrorist wannabe. Will gun down first responders encountered that Lelouch vi Britania is allowed take actions until such a time as he finds his happiness, regains custody of his sister from Suzaku Kururugi/herself, the filthy eleven.
And nice going on systematically manipulating a psychologically unstable assassin into total crippling emotional dependancy on yourself and letting him play with the people that you say you’re doing all this for, without slapping a NSFW advisory.
Not even going to mention the multi-sided civil war in China with factions composed of warlords. The good guys are the heroic foriegners pulling off an Anabasis and propping up the ones with the sheltered child-emperor, don’t-cha-know.
(glyph of wall-banging until I give my self a damn scalp-wound)
i miss shirley now that she’s gone.
i agree that killing shirley off was tantamount to lelouch losing his ties to his old life as lelouch lamperouge. as long as she was there, lelouch would forever be stranded between his two identities.
also, the loss of people important to him is a major part in his character development. what does he do from now on?
i personally want him, once he finds out it was actually rollo, to go into complete zero mode and crush rollo in the most cruel way possible – and that may need not be physical, no offense to rollo fans, but the angst was kinda gets to me at this point.
i think there’s still more to orange-kun. i dont’ think vv is stupid enough to send someone without checking his background for where his loyalties may possibly lie. there might be something in his cyborg-ness as a back up plan, in case orange-kun, as he has in this episode, turns traitor.
all in all, i am waiting eagerly for turn 14.
Anybody else notice the coffin discrepancy of 2017 in 13 and 2018 in 14? I theorize it was stock footage proving that lulu was going to off that beotch Shirley in season one for
outing him the closetI feel that Shirley’s death really symbolizes alot in this series. Its clear that Rolo did it, even if it was never shown. Personally, I loved Shirley. She had a huge yet subtle role in the series.
Shirley loved lelouch. She started in series one loving him. Loved him enough that when she found that Lelouch killed her father, she still would kill to protect him, as well, she tried to do…shooting Villetta before she could expose him.
It was later that Lelouch showed that his heart was not with Kallen/Karen (IDC what you fanboys of that pairing say, or with C2–same goes to you). He loved Shirley. He loved her so much, that he made her forget ever knowing him to save her the anguish of knowing every day that the man she loved was also the man she most hated. Afterwards was so sad when they talked, and she did not know him anymore.
Later, when she met him again you could say, her feelings, despite the Geass returned. She loved him again. And when Rolo shot her, Lelouch’s reaction was more than proof that he loved her. Shirley represented all that was good left in Lelouch. His happiness, love, compassion, and kindness.
After the death of Shirley, Lelouch lost all those emotions, becoming suicidal and losing the will to live. He tried to kill himself, but Kallen stopped him, and afterwards in the show, he was much more rutheless and had no compassion. So upon the death of an angel, a deamon was born.
