Oh good grief it looks like Ranka’s chances with Alto-hime keep getting dinged more and more. Looks like Kaifun Brera has finally hit home and will be devastating the RankaxAlto-hime ship. Brera amply demonstrates how much of a Kaifun-class antagonist he is by one upping Alto-hime roughly four times in a single episode. Ranka’s new version of Aimo was disturbing to me ears, but I suppose it’s all Grace’s fault though I hope Ranka will write a better song to replace that unsettling Aimo. Surprising how a new arrangement can alter the tone of a song so easily. The dogfights this time were good but the new version of Aimo playing in the background made it less enjoyable making it look like sheep being led to the slaughter house than a sweet all out space brawl. It’s not as fun when the Vajra aren’t shooting back with any success.

So it turns out that Mr. Bilrer was out looking for fold quartz to eliminate fold dislocations as a barrier to space travel. No doubt the Vajra are the only ones who can produce them given how the Vajra can cross fold dislocations with ease. So we know about Mr. Bilrer’s dreams, but what of Alto-hime’s? We still don’t know why Mr. Bilrer was keen on sharing his dream with Alto-hime and no one else. I guess in good time of course, so that the speculation can continue for a bit.

After the chat with the big boss man 2LT Alto-hime has gotten himself a new minion to make Vajra kebabs. This has garnered notice from the ladies on the Bridge Crew with Mina and Bobby being thoroughly impressed while Ram gets to make some snarky remarks. Did I mention that I love these people? Cathy however has some suspicions about the eventual use the corpses will go towards. Alto-hime, Mikhail, and Luca finally get to see Ranka again only for Brera to ruin it all. In class Brera uses Cyborg Kung Fu to defeat Pilot-hime adding more damage to Alto-hime’s bruised ego. Luca gets into a snarky mood and says that it’s that time of month again for Alto-hime to feel down and angry. Miboshi seems to have taken a liking to Brera as the resident robot boy, and not even Ranka has the nerve to tell her bodyguard to back off.

Grace gets Ranka to sing a new version of Aimo which I confess is fairly decent is no where near the greatness of the original or the movie version. Though I suppose that’s the point since this version of Aimo has a more sinister purpose. Brera gives Ranka some encouragement and already I can see Ranka putting more trust into Brera-nii. Alto-hime runs into Sheryl after the latter ran away from the hospital upon hearing of Grace’s betrayal and collapsing in a park. Alto-hime drags Sheryl to his bunk in an effort to keep Sheryl alive, suffice to say she was a feisty one. Mikhail walks in on them citing how Alto-hime for got to put up a hanky to tell Mikhail to get his own room. Suffice to say however both Alto-hime and Sheryl start going tsun tsun for each other, but Mikhail seems to be too tired to care and promptly leaves. Cathy gives them a call about a secret mission while Alto-hime keeps Sheryl against the wall and out of sight. Ozma is not pleased that Ranka is being put into danger and used as a weapon while Alto-hime was decidedly aggravated that Ranka would sing such a degraded version of Aimo.

Once again Elmo loses to Grace…poor fellow no matter where he moves his operation Grace is always there.
They launch off to test Ranka’s new abilities and it works, Brera who was not taking an active part later exterminates the lot of them, but once Ranka gets scared and stops singing, Brera shoots through Alto-hime to get a big red one and once again declares how Alto-hime is not suited for Ranka and that he will be the one to protect her. Sheryl after having sneaked onto the bridge sees that Ranka is a bigger idol than her in more ways than one and seems to have arrived at a decision about her future.

Ranka’s cause seems to be sinking fast, at least in my eyes. Brera seems to have more than enough kung fu to keep Alto-hime away and Ranka does not have enough nerve to tell her bodyguard to get lost for even a minute. Brera basically has Alto-hime beat in spacdes, right now Kabuki-hime’s kung fu is no where near as good, Brera has two minions to Alto-hime’s one, Brera is always near Ranka while Alto-hime has to stay 50 feet away, and in terms of piloting not only did Brera kill more and shoot off Alto-hime’s wing but also boasted that it would not be an experiment if he participated. Poor Alto-hime has no chance at all right now and Ranka is already starting to sell out with her singing Grace’s song. Ozma is sounding off the death klaxon and running up his death flag by trying to tell Leon off and once Ozma is gone only Ai-kun and Brera will be around for Ranka to cry on. I hope Ranka does the right thing and chooses Ai-kun over Brera. Moreover I hope Ranka does not star in a Kung Fu Movie with Brera. Still things look bad on Ranka’s front her new career seems to have been less than what she wanted and she even let Elmo get tossed aside like a rag doll. The only good thing that Ranka had going for her was that she is going to be a beacon of hope for the fleet with ample support from Bobby, and her sweet new battle wagon with Ranka pin-up. Hopefully Bobby and Canaria will be able to provide Ranka with a mother figure to retreat to when she gets sad. Alto-hime would probably get beaten up if Ranka tried, but Cararia and Bobby could probably take Brera on. Oh and I think that Kawamori has been cruising on 4chan and Shin’s post when he came up with the eye-catch. I do like Ranka’s autograph though.

Well time to find another job Alto-hime.
Alto-hime isn’t taking his loss of Ranka to Brera very well and I suspect that in the short term Alto-hime will be backing off for some time if not all together. I think that as a pilot even Pilot-hime knows that Brera is the superior pilot given how Brera could have fragged hime already. Alto-hime did not seem terribly pleased that Ranka was singing a lesser version of Aimo and I think he was able to tell Ranka was not a fan of it either. I just don’t see Alto-hime being able to see Ranka anytime soon given how Brera is the superior fighter on the ground and in a Valkyrie. On the other hand it seems that Alto-hime has taken an interest in his boss’s dreams noticing that Sheryl had fold quartz in her last remaining earring. Alto-hime was also connecting again with Sheryl after he rescues her. While in the previous episodes it seems as if Ranka was the only thing on Alto-hime’s mind I have the nagging suspicion that even then he was still trying to be her protector and nothing more. Now that Brera has proven superior defender I think that Alto-hime is starting to question his relationship with Ranka and what it means to him. Still you have to give Kabuki-hime credit for abiding by Sheryl’s wishes to not lock her up some where and leave her be; I guess deep down Alto-hime does care and is starting to notice that Sheryl likes him. It was kind of a change to see that Alto-hime was at a loss for word when asked why he cared about Sheryl, rather than the usual cutting remark and automatic tsun tsun. Lastly I though that it was a nice touch that they investigated how a Navy works and incorporated how single folk don’t get company housing but live on the ship, hence why Sheryl was even on Quarter in the first place.

Sheryl seems to be in the dumps about how no one has come to visit her since Alto-hime and Ranka came. Grace’s betrayal was basically the last straw and Sheryl decided to leave the hospital. Given how Ranka is now a bigger star and that Grace stuck a knife in her back I think Sheryl will decide not sing for a while. I am sure that Sheryl will start singing towards the end again but in the short term I think Sheryl will pursue other work for now. Given the new ED, Northern Cross, and the inclusion of Sheryl in pilot suit I think that Sheryl will try and find a job in SMS, it may not be as a pilot but as support crew, in which case I am sure that Mr. Bilrer would allow his new protégé Alto-hime to hire Sheryl in some supporting capacity during her long sabbatical from singing. So far the concept sketches only show a bomber suit, so maybe Sheryl can get her own Koning Monster… However, I still would prefer Valkyrie Pilot Sheryl but I guess we shall see. Even if Sheryl’s lost a lot it seems that Alto-hime is being less combative with her given how Pilot-hime brought her back to his bunk instead of all the places she listed. Like a consummate gentleman Alto-hime didn’t do anything wrong though Sheryl thought hime did something to her. Moreover I think Sheryl is starting to make her real feelings known given how Alto-hime didn’t just say he cared because she was just a friend. After seeing Ranka’s singing not only top her own concerts but defeat Vajra as well I think that Sheryl’s professional pride has taken a hit and that she won’t be singing for a while. Given how fame is no longer in her way I think Sheryl is in prime position to take Alto-hime. Good thing for Sheryl that the Bridge Crew sans Cathy seem to be willing to trust her, though in the case of Cathy I think that Lt. Glass has not forgotten how haughty Sheryl had been. In the end though I don’t think Sheryl got entirely dumped on like Kabitzin, and Blissmo think, she did get more alone time with hime than Ranka…

Well it seems that unless something major happens to Ranka’s nerves that this triangle might see Ranka getting distracted Brera who is right now the only source of male encouragement for her outside of Ai-kun. Hopefully it will be a tighter race, but right now I think more SherylxAlto-hime development is in the works. The new ED is pretty good I think and hope some of you folks like it too. Elmo is probably going to have less of a role from now on and next time it looks like Klein has finally snagged a dayto with Mikhail. On the minor character front it seems that there was some debate about Ranka being Minmei but it seems that every one was impressed and I am sure Nanase will hear about it. Since Brera is blocking everyone I think that Luca’s chances to get Nanase have gone up, though Nanase might now think that Alto-hime is really a girl given her blush during the PMS joke. I look forward to the MikhailxKlein-sama dayto though I really want to see that VF-25 air show, Kawamori has been teasing us for way too long now. Ozma seems likely to die next time given how it will be a reflection of how Ozma first adopted Ranka, given how even Skull leader was powerless to stop Brera from showing off it seems that Ozma is getting a bit too distracted. Besides I think Leon might just off Ozma for talking back and pounding his desk.

The Vajra-kebab was so strange and awesome, especially when Ram and Mina started with their commentary. They seem like they could have their own little omake section.
I need to see Alto come back to see a handkerchief clamped in the door before Mikhail and Klan Klein come out looking all flushed and rumpled. I can just imagine Mikhail laying down these roomate ground rules for Alto while Alto is like “Whatever, I only like planes, not girls.”

Alto definitely needs a better ship or some sort of update or there’s no way he can compete with Brera. Once Ozma bites the dust he’ll be just about the best pilot Frontier has left and right now he can’t lay a finger on Brera and the other Galaxy valkyres. Afterall there is bound to be a showdown between Frontier and Galaxy at some point.

In that cas I think that discretion is the better part of valor that way you can apologize in a VF-25 and suffer a could AP slaps rather than being juiced Vajra style. I think this love triangle is going to be different but it is disheartening to see that Ranka has gotten into Minmei’s position through no fault of her own. The Amio song was strange for this episode. The first time I saw this episode I thought it was foreboding even without a translation. Then, after watching a sub with the actual lyrics for this version, I have a feeling this series is going to get deadly serious. And as for the episode, I’ve agreed with Omni. It’s so hard to watch all three characters put through these obstacles > Alto losing to Brera (more than once now), Ranka being used, and Sheryl not being able to do anything but sit on the sidelines. I think I groaned at least 100 times during the episode. And ZOMG. Brera shot through Alto’s VF. Although he is what I term as “eye candy” for the ladies, he CANNOT be forgiven.
There’s no way Sheryl will stay on the sidelines like this. She’ll probably investigate this whole deal about Grace and come to the conclusion that she was being used. THEN she’ll find the resolve to go do something about it. It’s funny how people are assuming she’ll complacently go to Alto and cry to him for comfort just because princess Alto can’t get near Ranka now(because of prince Brera XD). She’s not like that. And after ep 12, I also don’t believe the next episodes will further separate Ranka and Alto completely. They’re just making things look more interesting now by putting a hurdle between them. Isn’t that romantic *__*
Like some others have been saying, Ranka and Sheryl will do the duet that will save everyone in the finale. Could it be Lion?

Nothing at all may happen with Grace. Since she did tell Ranka that it would be no problem for her to manage both of them, she can probably easily talk her way back into Sheryl’s good graces (no pun intended).
And if she decides to be a pilot I guess it just makes things even easier for Grace.
But given the number of times they’ve had those two duet, it does seem plausible that they might both have a part to play in the defeat of the Varja.
And Alto-hime might end up with neither of them. His poor ship!!!!! But nevermind, Ozma will be out of the picture next week so Skull 1 will be available. And that probably has some nifty features that Alto’ standard Valkyrie doesn’t.

-Haha that’s so nasty.XD I just want Cathy and Ozma to settle their past before Ozma exits the stage. If they spare us that scene, it’ll be enough. Next week’s going to be heartwrenching. It would be so cool if Alto inherits Ozma’s VF-1. I feel bad that Ozma’s death flag is 99.9% set, but it would be like a power up for Alto to outshine Brera if he really does inherit the captain’s ship.

I don’t think Sheryl is going to do the digging but Cathy given how her Ozma is about ot get some pineapple salad. Besides Cathy has already been snooping around and Sheryl has to overcome her personal problems first. She’s not going to cry on Alto-hime shoulders the whole time but I think she will have to rebuild her shattered confidence before she can do anything probably with two eps tops. I think you underestimate how much of an obstacle Brera is given how he basically shut Alto-hime down for the whole ep I don’t think Alto-hime being able to beat Brera will be happening anytime soon.
The Ranka and Sheryl duet won’t happen so soon me thinks at least not until well after the shock over Ozma’s death are overcome by Ranka.

Indeed impz looks forward to episode 17 with great anticipation. I think that Alto-hime will end up with someone Kawamori Macross has never ended in such a manner yet and I doubt it ever will. Even if Alto-hime gets Ozma’s VF-25S I don’t think that Alto-hime will be in charge of the vic given how Mikhail and Luca have rank.
i don’t think Leon is going to allow that to happen, hopefully it will be a quickie.

The “Revenge” part in Ranka’s poster is what caught my eye. It was an interesting choice of words to associate with her first live, whether it was an Engrish thing or just Grace being Grace (kinky).
Haha you’re so pessimistic, Crusader. Maybe Sheryl can get some words of encouragement from Alto. That would be good for her, I think. Though, I really don’t think her depression will last for two episodes or so. I just don’t see her sitting around for more than one episode doing nothing but wallow in self pity. She’s bound to do some stunts like the one she pulled in this episode. Yeah, Brera did pwn Alto in this episode and Alto looked so defeated at the end, but inevitably, Alto’s going to have to show him he’s not a push over. His chance will come. =)
Besides, Brera’s protectee has a really high attachment to Alto, not to mention, the core of her character growth revolved mostly around Alto. I don’t think they did episodes 12-14 just so this new adversary can separate the two apart permanently. That’s why I just see this as a hurdle on the RankaxAlto front.:p If they get through this, then they’ll put Romeo and Juliet to shame. Also if Ozma dies, it’s not Brera Ozma’s going to entrust Ranka with, it’s going to be Alto. After ep 14, I think IF ever Ozma will be given a chance to talk to him one last time, he’ll tell Alto to protect Ranka in his stead.:( Ozma seems to be feeling like Ranka doesn’t need him anymore and is maturing as a woman more and more. Ugh, I’m getting sad already. Somebody cancel that pineapple salad. ~_~

It might be two episodes because the next one is most definitely Ozma’s swan song, I doubt Sheryl is going to be factoring much in it…unless she makes the pineapple salad.
If or rather when Ozma dies I am sure Ranka will be entrusted to with Cathy, Canaria, Bobby, or any combination there of. No self respecting onii-chan is going to leave Ranka under the care of a mere boy who can’t even afford his own house. Remember Alto-hime is still bunking with Mikhail and has no other home to stay in unless hime goes begging back to Ranzo. Sorry but Brera will be in the way for sometime, sadly. Let’s just hope it will be Bobby and we all know that GARby can definitely kick Brera’s ass and has the wit to get Ranka some Alto-hime time.
Perhaps the change to the song was to change the fold wave pattern to cause the Vajra to react differently then the real song. If you remember the last big battle Ranka’s song had more of an attraction effect then a replant effect. Also if you remember the Vajra queen actually said something to the effect of brings peace and love to the galaxy So maybe the Vajra aren’t all that bad and we just need to invite them over for some Karaoke ;P
And this whole Fold crystal thing, perhaps that is why the Vajra are pissed off and attacking. Galaxy was probably harvesting them for some time and they finally retaliated, and then in an effort to draw them away form the main fleet they turned the Vajra’s attention to Frontier so they could regroup and figure out what to do next.
Also it could be that the change in song was to keep the real song hidden for a later encounter where they will need all the song power they can get!
I still believe and predict a duet of Ranka and Sheryl on the bridge of the quarter. I can’t wait!
Oh, and we are we going to get a Nekki Basara cameo???? Even if he can’t sing what about a scene where Ranka runs away from Grace and then Bumps into Basara on the streets (who is there playing a local club/bar) and gets some sage advice on sing from your heart and capturing your dream? RANKA!! LISTEN TO MY SONG!!!
@Crusader, yeah it does seem unlikely he’d get put in charge of the squad. I’m hoping its Luca and that the new position comes with all the pineapple salad he can eat ^_- But given his talent for getting hit in a fight its probably not likely, he’ll be put in charge I mean.

Yeah Brera is a rather odd fellow and implacable obstacle.
Just a random comment, but does it bother anyone that the military processes of artillery are alive (Koenig Monster) and well in an age of fighter-based warfare? Wouldn’t that imply that dreadnaughts and ships of the line (or plane, given the three-dimensional nature of space) are still effective? That would place the warfare in Macross F in a space-warfare period vaguely analogous to the nineteenth century, before the rise of the aircraft carrier. And if that is the case, why haven’t I seen a capital ship kill /anything/, save with the cheesy Yamato cannon?
By the way, just so people know for future discussions, I’m a Sheryl guy because I’m not a dirty pedophile. That’s not to say I don’t find her cute, but there’s absolutely no arousal in me otherwise.

Standard Sci-Fi set up, think of it as Star Wars, little fighters can still do damage but there is still a niche for heavy capital ships given how fighter vs fighter combat is still important. Hencc Koning Monsters fucntion as artillery on planets and as mobile gun turrets in space with some long rang Flak capacity.

Hurmf. I don’t see why they don’t just line capital ships with Koenig cannons, as they appear to be longer ranged, more powerful and less expensive (in terms of upkeep and human lives) than send thousands of short-ranged, expensive fighters armed with expensive and slow nuclear missiles piloted by living breathing people. Then again, eliminating the Valkyrie would kinda neuter Macross, so this is purely theoretical, but nonetheless interesting.
