Code Geass R2, Episode 19- Betrayal

Now that’s what I’m talking about, he’s coming for you Charlie

Crusader’s saving the country this week, so I’m all by my lonesome, but we have plenty to talk about this episode. The inevitable betrayal of the OotBK comes to full fruition along with all of the consequences that surround that, including the death of another main character. And once again the writers re-align us for the final showdown between Lelouch and the Emperor.

Monica Kruszewski, the Knight of Twelve, finally makes her speaking appearance, voiced by Anya’s seiyuu, Yuko Goto. Not sure what role she’s going to play, but whatever it is it probably won’t be for awhile since she is stationed onboard the Emperor’s flying ship rather than with Schniezel. One more Round has yet to speak or make more than a momentary appearance, the Knight of Nine, Nonette Enneagram.

Not quite as good as the often-posted emo facial contortion from the first season, but amusing nonetheless. Yeah Nina, for a brilliant scientist you are pretty fucking retarded. Hey, I built this huge strategic weapon that vaporizes a huge area, if I detonate it in Tokyo it won’t hurt anyone right? Certainly not 35 million people who live in one of the most densely packed metropolises in the world…

Of course it is, because where would we have our school hijinks fillers?

Lelouch really started to lose himself here, forgetting all about protecting his identity (not like it matters for this episode) and yelling at Toudou. This scene provides another Lelouch emo facial contortion (not shown here) to add to the collection.

Awesome operational awareness by the Ikagura. Hey, I have huge radar coverage but I won’t announce a Brittanian ship wandering on in that could easily attack us! It’s ok though, it’s for plot, and so Cornelia can rabu rabu over her ani’ue.

Man, he’s just firing out more for the collection. His reaction is understandable though, he’s apparently (remember once again that nobody is dead in a Sunrise show until you see the body) lost his sole reason to live and no longer has the need for the mask he’s put on. One suspects (and is confirmed at the end) that Rolo already knew he was just being used as a tool, but he’s still visibly hurt by the outburst.

I really enjoyed this scene, where Lloyd puts Nina to the choice some scientists have to make, either your soul or the pursuit of science. It’s the same type of moral crossroads that those who created the atomic bomb had to make, or any scientist who designs weapons for that matter. Do you indulge yourself and pursue knowledge to the very end knowing that what you create will be used to end life? A rare truly profound philosophical question posed in this show.

No, no, NO!

Schniezel: Hey guys, Zero has magical powers
OotBK: O RLY?! PROVE IT
Schiezel: Ok here’s some voice recording that could easily be doctored
OotBK: OH NOZ ZERO HAZ MAGIK HAX, BETRAY!

Ahem, anways, Schiezel has the keikaku doori folded hands position going on. He is playing these guys so hard it’s not even funny, what a bunch of idiots. I was amused when he referred to Lelouch as the one he “loved and feared the most.” I don’t think Schniezel is afraid of anyone, and as for love, let’s just chock that one up to more yaoi bait for the fangirls. He even bullshits about FREIA saying that they warned him in advance. Sure, if you consider having Suzaku inform him, whom Schniezel knew Lelouch would never believe considering recent events, informing him. Played like a flute OotBK.

I’m sure Schniezel saw this coming as well, because he seems to know everything. What’s sad is that Ougi and the OotBK are stupid enough to believe that Schniezel would actually give them Japan back. Without Zero the whole international coalition against Brittania collapses for lack of unified leadership, and Schniezel can take the entire world. Ougi should spend less time thinking with his dick and more with his other head. Now he definitely needs to die.

With all the rageworthy and depressing shit that went on during this episode it’s hard to get excited over moe C.C. serving her master. It’s unfortunate but that’s the direction the show has taken. I just hope they change this situation by the end of the series because yeah she’s moe, but this totally kills her character for the ending. I preferred the devious and crafty C.C. to this moe one, Lelouch needs a strong support to help him through the end.

Realizing that at this point there is no way out of this, Lelouch puts on his acting mask and saves Kallen’s life. It may have hurt her, because she sympathizes with him due to the fact that she also lost a precious sibling, but there wasn’t any other choice. If he truly was a cold and heartless man who would use everyone else as his pawns he would have used her to save himself, resulting in her death. It makes a much better story that he doesn’t. With this, he also cuts off the OotBK for good, because there’s little chance they’d go back to him after he said such things.

Hmmmm, opening the door for the future eh? He seemingly had resigned himself to death so he figured that he’d at least let out some of his true feelings about her, which serves as a great tag for the future since he is saved by Rolo. Kallen, next time you are up in the Guren make sure you go and save Lelouch, k?

I loved the music during Rolo’s rescue of Lelouch, a great dramatic piece of classical along with what I think is another Hitomi insert. The music in this show has always been top-notch, but this really stood out to me. I can’t wait to pick up the second season OSTs, the first season’s are great.

They really made an effort to make Rolo a sympathetic character in the end, which I don’t fully buy. He was ready to kill Nunally, a complete and total innocent who was the most important person in Lelouch’s life for his own selfish reasons. He also gutted Shirley at the mere mention of Nunally’s name. It seems pretty unbelievable that his times with Lelouch allowed him to become “human” if last episode he was dead set on killing Nunally.

The Council’s will has been done, although not death by Shirley’s cell phone strap he at least died to save nii-san. Lelouch showed some heart here by at least giving him some pleasant parting words, and he truly was concerned for his well being during the rescue. Even though much of their relationship was a lie, Rolo can at least die with something to remember, a bright spot on an otherwise dark life.

Oh dear, Suzaku has gone off the deep end, that can’t be good.

Well, now Lelouch is all by his lonesome somewhat. The loss of Nunally, Rolo, and the OotBK is pretty massive, but it allows him to refocus on a single goal. Rather than trying to do many things at once (like fight Schniezel, lead the Japanese, take over the world, protect Nunally, etc.) he can dedicate himself to taking on the Emperor as redemption for his many sins.

Sounds like pretty standard villain faire, I was a bit disappointed that it was coming from Emperor Wakamoto. Destroying this world to make a new one is way overused, especially in mecha. Oh well, as long as they can give us something satisfying in the end I’ll take it.

Now that’s brilliant way to end the episode, I’m ready for something awesome now. Overall, I found the episode to be quite powerful, finally showing the consequences of Lelouch’s choices up until now. He decided to fake his identity and frequently use his geass, and those choices bore the fruit of betrayal that we saw this week. It was unfortunate they were only able to cull one member of the cast this week, but there was very little combat and it was a major character so I’ll take it. I still won’t view Rolo as a sympathetic character, but I don’t bear the same vitriol toward him that I once did.

What’s left for Lelouch? Well he’s going to take on the Emperor, but he’s not completely alone. Orange-kun is still with him until the end, and there’s a good chance Kallen will come back to him given the chance. Other than that you can hope that Sayoko survived the blast but that’s about it. Hopefully he can get Anya on his side with some geass canceling, but he’s starting over from nearly scratch again.

Next Episode:

Low quality extended preview of episode 20.

Investigations of Kamine Island, Kaguya in tears (probably over Zero/Lelouch) and Gino being detained for god knows what. From the extended preview, Anya with red-rimmed geass’d eyes (please get her story out!), Suzaku in his old uniform (flashbacks probably), Kaguya and the OotBK having some serious issues, penguins, and a dartboard. Penguins are actually relevant, because in the Ragnarok map, there is a site in Antarctica (note the center of it all is the site at Kamine Island). Maybe Lelouch is going to visit some adorable little penguins!

Crusader’s Angry Drunken Rant

In substitution of Crusader’s rant, I present to you this week’s ending eyecatch.

    Lulu’s ass: accepted legal tender of the Holy Empire of Britannia for limmitted applications of trade and barter. Good for: Promotion to extralegal adminstrative position, 1. Nation-state, 1.

    Well…Episode 19 certainly was a nice way to realign the main plotline for Lelouch, and, quite happily, showed Suzaku finally jumping off the deep end. Lets hope it results in a straight-jacket rather than the usual ‘LUL 35 million, I can take one more life…and another…and another…ect.’ But, I can be wrong. Perhaps Wakamoto-sama shall give him some happy pills and use him for some useless plotline, since I doubt normal britannia will take back the guy who slaughtered millions of people – majoritly honourary- / britannian people – unless Sunrise wants to preform another lulwut moment for the sake of their reputation as crack-filled script writers…Meh, I could be wrong. *cough*

    On another note; I wonder if Lelouch and Emperor Charles had similar ideas in mind for their ‘Grand Conquest’ of the world. Remarkably alike, for main-character generic evil/holy world-fixes, don’t you think? That, or Sunrise need to pay their writers more cash-in-hand than crack.

    Other than possible plot pops, OotBK seems to be heading straight for the sin bin, Normal!C.C. is still lost to us (I can hear the cries of her followers growing louder as I type), The Lord-of-Facial-Expression is hounding over his Ragnarok Connection [I wondered originally if that could be CGs version of broadband – I was sadly mistaken, Rolo is finally six-feet-under – thank god for that…Shame about his classical-music smoothed-over ending. I’d have liked to see him literally thrown off a cliff face, personally; But, a heart-attack will do…if you can call it that. Up for debate by medical specialists, no doubt.

    Now then, if fellow readers (and the author) don’t mind, I’m going to go ahead and dig myself a grave between Rolo and Calawain. ANYA FUTURE PLOT DEVELOPMENT / MOE FTW.

    Calling it now, Charles is going to use the Ragnarok Connection to either reset the world to before the Warz started (Pre-Britannian Invasion of Japan: Happy end for all) or bring back all of the dead. One or the other.

    The entire /a/ board has been raging over Ougi’s decision to betray Zero, especially after his AWESOME leadership and decision making skills were on full display last episode.

    I found it weird how Lelouch could go from raging on the breaking point to completely lucid just by the act of Rolo’s self-sacrifice. This episode really pushed him into Suzaku territory (“I want to die, Let me die, wahhhhhhhhhhhhh”) but he pulled it together at the end. Weird how he spent most of the series plotting to use and discard Rolo but then feels some sort of sympathy for him at the end? Did he forget that Rolo killed Shirley?

    More questions need to be asked like: How did Schneizel know who Lelouch Geass’d? Where’d he get that list from?

    What’s going to happen with Orange-kun? He already knows Lelouch is Zero and his loyalty is to Lelouch, not the Black Knights.
    What about Laksharta? She didn’t even care to attend the “meeting”. She just wanted to look over what bastardizations Lloyd did to her Guren.

    This series is really starting to pick up speed now. I think all or most of the Korean Blog spoilers have been fulfilled/addressed by now.

    I’m really interested in seeing what Lelouch is going to do now that his back is up against the wall and he’s cornered with Britannia AND the Black Knights on his tail.

    I’m glad they’re finally addressing the issue of Anya’s Geass (or so it seems), next episode. They’ve really been flirting around her past history with Lelouch and they need to resolve it.

    With only 5/6 episodes left it’s going to be very, very interesting.

    Wow the episode was really good and I have a few things to say
    1st—- I almost fell for the sympathy they tried to give Rolo but at the end I was happy he was dead and I believe they handled his death very well not being killed by Lelouch but dying to save him believing his lie to the very end can’t say I’ll miss you but good job Rolo for saving Lelouch and allowing him to destroy the bastard of them all Charlie.

    2nd—- I have a feeling that Anya and Gino will defect because Lelouch needs more power to take on the emperor he can’t waltz in on his ship and keep shooting the inmortal bastard.

    3rd—- It’s sad really because th Ootbk are so easily manipulated first Lelouch manipulated them and now Shneizel (I hate him now I didn’t care about him but now I do) and really how retarded can they be first sure Shneizel will give Japan back and after a week of getting bored he’ll just take it back, by force if he has to I and what are they gonna do? Fight? Without Zero they’re dead, useless don’t know what else.

    4th—- Crusader would be more than happy to post around emo shot of Lelouch and say things like “that’s what you get for being an idiot” and I’m sure he’ll criticize this (if he gets the chance) and tell me “that’s not what I would say I would say this:” and he would tell me so you get the idea.

    5th—- This episode gave me the feeling that Lelouch is going to die in the end……. =C extremely sad face I don’t want him to die I want him to live and rule the world with a puppet of nunally by his side. (also although in Sunrise shows you’re right the person isn’t dead until you see the body I think Nunally is dead because bringing her back would kinda make the plot suckish I think it’s better to leave newly determined emo Lelouch battle it out with His father.

    6th—- I think Shneizel is now going to somehow get the black knights to fight his father? Cuz he’s baisically got them sucking his balls with his perfect IQ and the Ootbk’s IQ of -18 really how dumb can they be. Zero got them further away than they ever would’ve gotten without him they’d all still be hiding in mountains doing random acts of terrorism accomplishing nothing god Snap out of it it’s so frustrating.

    7th—- yes I’ve already stressed the order is stupid but I just want to make sure you understand….. They’re idiots

    8th—- @Calawain I also thought Nina would be having a table humping orgasm when she saw the bomb go off but I figured out that the reason she’s like that is because looking over the list of people killed she noticed that the dead list went like this:
    eleven=dead
    eleven=dead
    24,999,996 elevens=dead
    2 britanians dead (including the governor)
    Britanians have ended your eleven killing spree you mass britanian murderer
    Realizing she spilled britanian blood made her emo

    8th—- I want Shneizel dead

    9th—- Suzaku is crazy

    10th—- Other rounds are useless

    11th—- Lelouch should have some pie, it’s good for the soul.

    What’s really going to be funny is when the United Federation of Nations realizes Ougi and the Black Knights have sold them out to get Japan back.

    INCOMING SHITSTORM!

    Ougi: “Give us Japan and we’ll stop yo”
    Kallen: “What about the rest of the world fighting against Britannia?”
    Ougi: “Oh? Them? Fuck ‘em! I got me a Brown Britannian and a Free Japan. I’m livin’ large!”

    Just saw the extended preview too. Lelouch is going to use his Geass on all the Penguins and make them his new army. With Orange-kun, Kallen and Penguin-kun Lelouch is going to decimate Britannia.

    Oh, with spears being chucked at Gino, is it too early to speculate on him and Anya possibly switching sides next episode?

    i liked rolo’s ending and was always a bigger fan of him than shirley (who people need to STOP bringing up; rolo’s desire to kill nunnally was a much bigger deal (though unknown to L)). shirley should have died during the mao encounter and her presence in this series was MOSTLY FILLER. just look at the fan pairings. i have never seen a luluxshirley image but i digress.

    ultimately, rollo saved lelouch’s life and made him realize he had one last purpose to fulfill. that warrants a bit of sympathy on L’s part. of course his intention was always to use rollo, but is it not possible for him to develop some sort of appreciation when rollo sacrifices his own life for lelouch, DESPITE being told he was hated/not his real brother/being used etc.

    lelouch still isn’t entirely alone at this point. he still has jeremiah, who schneizel FALSELY inferred was under the effects of geass. however, i was always confused a bit by jeremiah’s loyalties. he’s… with lelouch because he’s marianne’s son? so is he loyal to the royal family or not? he hesitated to kill cornelia. and actually thanked suzaku in person this episode. i guess he’s not going to fight him unless lelouch commands him to. personally i don’t even remember when suzaku saved his life, it was sooo many episodes ago. -_-

    also, i really want CC to regain her memory somehow. her new character was interesting for like, two scenes. i am unclear as to what’s going on with her as well. no memory, no geass, no immortality? but lelouch doesn’t have her ‘code’?

    LASTLY, why are there so many gaps in the KoR? 12 (monica), 10 (luciano), 9 (nonette), 7 (suzy), 6 (anya), 3 (gino), 1 (bismarck).. there are just (randomly) openings for 11, 8, 5, 4, and 2?

  8. Posted August 17, 2008 at 4:01 pm | Permalink

    @Jack

    With Schniezel it’s good for nothing, he’ll just conquer them back again because they have inept leadership. Ougi is completely useless, see recent episodes and last season for evidence.

    @Kaeo

    Brittania is smart, they see that Suzaku is going off the deep end and they are going to give him a new mecha. Who knows what he’s going to do with us.

    Well to be honest the soft handling of Rolo’s death bodes for a softer ending of a lot more plot lines such as Suzaku and Lelouch. One or both may die, but if they can try and make a nutcase like Rolo sympathetic it’s likely they will do the same with the two primary characters.

    @Halcyon

    Yeah /a/ is also making a lot of really bad Jewish jokes in relation to Ougi too lol =/ I share in their rage though, as you probably picked up by my comments.

    Lelouch has displayed an amazing capability to become lucid when danger approaches or when it’s necessary. A recent example is Shirley’s death when he immediately recovered when Rolo came over. He just needs the right reason.

    Orange-kun is loyal to Lelouch, this will not change his alignment at all. He already knew everything he’s done including Euphie and the like. Lakshata I’m not too sure. In this episode she said she didn’t care about negotiations and instead wanted to play with the Guren, so when Kallen goes to Lelouch’s side she may just follow. She cares for science more than anything.

    @cj

    Anya I have thought was going to defect for a long time, made more believable by some of the side materials hints as well. Gino is possible too, as he’s very attached to Anya, reacted very negatively to the use of Freia, is rabu rabu for Kallen, and has arguments with other Brittanians. Certainly someone has to defect to his side because he can’t beat the Emperor by himself with only like Orange and Kallen.

    I hope Lelouch isn’t going to die in the end, and to be honest Sunrise doesn’t kill off their primary protagonists for the most part. Of course this show has done a lot of things differently, but has also done a lot of things the same.

    Nina is just trash now, a pathetic and naive character. She was amusing before, but no longer. Death now.

    @Lelangir

    Nein! Orange-kun must LIVE! He must carry on the pimpness.

    @Halycon

    Yeah I wonder how they UFN is going to take this, they don’t have the same emotional instability caused by their relations with Zero that the OotBK has. I doubt Xing Ke cares much who Zero really is, although the geass thing will probably be disturbing. Ougi is just a dumbass.

  9. Posted August 17, 2008 at 4:07 pm | Permalink

    @D

    I’ve seen Shirley fanart, but I somewhat agree that she should have died in the Mao arc and really didn’t need to be hanging around taking up valuable time for so long.

    Orange-kun is loyal to Marianne only because of what happened 8 years ago. He was on guard as a personal bodyguard to Marianne when she was killed and feels a deep, personal responsibility for her death and what happened to Lelouch and Nunally. So no, his loyalty does not lie with the Brittanian royal family, only with Marianne and her descendants.

    No, the Emperor took her code at the end of episode 15. Removing the code doesn’t kill them right away, but they lose their immortality and apparently, their memories. I hope she gets them back too, they haven’t fully explained all of the supernatural “truths” so there’s ways of getting it back.

    There is no requirements that there are 12 Rounds at any one time, that’s just how many slots there are. It’s rare to find someone of such caliber to be a Rounds, so the slots are only filled when someone qualified is available. Vacancies are caused by death and retirement one assumes.

    @calawain

    haha. maybe all it takes is a kiss from LL to restore her memory. it worked at the beginning of R2; that’s all CC needed to cancel charles’s geass which i thought was kind of cliche.

    and i dunno. i guess i just thought that when a knight died, the rest were promoted. remember way back when suzaku wanted to be knight of one? there has to be some means to work your way up.. if wikipedia means anything, there’s a bit of hype when it comes to nonette’s character, you’d think she’d rank higher. i am guessing (non)ette (ennea)gram permanently and deliberately occupies the knight of nine position since she has such an appropriate name. *eyeroll*

    You know Nina thing is just stupid really you think the person who made the bomb would know how destructive it was.
    Random scientist: “are you sure this is safe to shoot within the city limits it seems to be very destructive and could take civilian lives if attached to the Lancelot”
    Nina: “what are you talking about it’s pink it couldn’t hurt a flie just Zero”
    ….

    Anywhoo
    @Halcyon Silly boy the penguins aren’t for Lelouch Ragnarok is actually a machine that allows the control of all the world’s penguins. With an army of flightless birds he will rule 3/4 of the world (water) and Shneizel will finally take over Australia.

    @d
    dude at this point if they introduce more characters in code geass it be to kill them in the same episode and if they do that with a rounds members, who are supposed to be the best of the best, while other members have been around for 19 episodes it really wouldn’t be fair now would it? Plus they’re all in Europe fighting God knows what poor defenseless country. Seriously one army for such a huge area who does that (talking about the U.F.N.) and they all agree to send it to Japan leaving the rest defenseless???? wow Zero must be really persuasive or gave them all alot of cookies to convince them to agree to that.

    Orange must live on and cancel out Suzaku’s geass so lelouch can tell him to die
    “Yes your highness” *shot*

    Poor moe C.C. I think she’s going to become a psychic at the end of the series telling people she can talk to ghosts

    It’s amazing what you can do if you gather some of the worlds stupidest people in one ship.

    Also Lelouch will rule the world
    All hail Lelouch!!!!!!!

    As I said, Rolo died from bro-con… which was his happy ending, and Lulu was indirectly responsible for it. Still, I don’t think people were expecting Rolo to get killed by Lulu in QUITE this way.

    What I find funny is that Ashford Academy’s out of the 1300m radius for the nuke, but well within the 3000m radius for the ‘super blast from void drag effect’ that was shown on the FLEIJA screen… and despite the so-called ‘super blast’ (aka: shockwave) the windows aren’t even broken when the buildings should’ve been flattened or at least crisped by the thermal shock of that nuke prior to the implosion effect.

    Ah well – at least we got to see Nina’s and Suzaku’s emo facial distortions – surely that’s something. Especially since Schneizei’s well on his way to winning everything by ‘losing’… and the OotBK won’t understand that until the second before he nukes them.

    @Calawain

    Actually, provided he worked in a “right to purchase sakuradite produced at market rate” into the paperwork, if Schneizel backstabs them on this he’d be doing it purely for the LULZ. Which he probably doesn’t do. They just suffered 35 million casualties among their administrators, colonists, britanianized japanese, and assorted collaberators. Holding onto Japan after the double-whammy culls of every japanese willing to try “peaceful progression from status quo” and every britanian willing to give Area 11 a shot of the SAR and Freya was going to be… problematic… at best. Ougi and Schneizel are both cashing in their chips and walking away with their winnings, and as of /right now/ they’ve won the series.

    @Halcyon

    Funny because it’s true. And you know what? He can live with it. Again, Ougi wins the series. And for the UFN, their armed forces having the battlecry “Nippon Banzai!” should have been a heads up. Just saying, yo.

    . Again, Ougi wins the series.

    askdfjasdfja;fa Ougi is a retard. He’ll soon come to know the error of his ways by Ep 22.

    And for the UFN, their armed forces having the battlecry “Nippon Banzai!” should have been a heads up. Just saying, yo

    The UFN’s armed forces are mostly the BK through a weird contract. But Xing Ke doesn’t know the Black Knights have betrayed Zero and Xing Ke seems to respect Zero, if nothing else for his strategic ability.

    Geass or no Geass, I doubt Xing Ke’s allegiance is as fickle as the Black Knights. Xing Ke and Zero have a mutual end-game goal that doesn’t stop with the liberation of Japan. Japan was just a staging area to get the other countries that are neutral to see that the Black Knights/UFN were capable of taking on and defeating Britannia.

    This whole new Britannian/BK alliance may throw all that into disarray at least until Ep 22 when Lelouch conquers them all with the might of a thousand penguins.

    NO LONGER WILL THEY BE CONFINED TO THEIR FROZEN DESOLATE ARCTIC WASTELANDS. NOW IS THE TIME FOR THE MARCH OF THE PENGUINS!

    I wonder if the penguins will have rifles and have spec ops training?

    Ougi: What the heck is that?
    Todo: I don’t know, but…
    Chiba: Are they penguins?

    (Everyone facefaults!)

    Damn you everyone at the BKs!!!! You’ll regret your decision, I tell ya!

    what a bunch of complete idiots even Todou who i hoped would be the intellectual in all this mess failed miserably also Ohgi going “give us japan back” what a freaking numbnut he clearly does not understand the situation that they are in also Diethard was completely swept in the flow but from the extended preview he might have realized what had happened and what Schneizel succeeded in doing

    ahh Kaguya i m so thankful that you where not with them when shit hit the fan but why is it that i have this nagging feeling that you already know who Zero truly is

    you can’t really give Kallen any fault in situation cause Lulu really had a lot of practice in pushing other people away but in the end he conveyed what he truly felt

    i never knew that standing on the same spot for almost half a day could make someone go crazy but sorry Bombzaku you suck at hysterical laughter

    finally Rolo what can i say his death was superbly done i really felt sorry for him even if in the back of my mind a voice was raging saying that this bro con killed Shirley and was planning to kill Nunnally also really liked the music

    The Black Knights haven’t done anything idiotic. They are not ideological crusaders in a great quest to put an end to Britanian Global Hegemony. They’re a battlehardenned japanese resistance army. They landed some good hits, had a nuke dropped in their faces, and were handed a political disaster on a platter. They then cut a deal to get. every. single. one. of their war-aims (and somehow ditching Zero after they liberated japan was previously established as one of their war-aims). They aren’t the Lelouch vi Britannia fan club and emotional support group. They’re the army in the field of the forces for the liberation of japan. They’ve. Done. Their. Jobs. Time to sell out the fanatics and sex up some hot brittanian chixors.

    These are serious men plying a trade that does NOT forgive error. Every day they vie against the might of the Brittanian empire is a day they risk disaster and failure of their goal. Not a one them can’t think of dead friend that once stood on his left or his right. It was just reveled they’ve been made FOOLS of by an expatriate britanian royal and angst-driven TEENAGER. Sweet Haruhi people, THEY’D HAVE EFFN’ PUT HIM AGAINST THE WALL AND SHOT HIM IN THE HEAD without even making a deal first if there wasn’t hay to be made in selling his virgin ass. BATTLEHARDENNED. REVOLUTIONARIES. Not-nice-people-at-all. If Kallen didn’t have hormones…

    Dammit people, this is the kind of thinking that would have somebody saying the USA shouldn’t have cut its deal in 1782 because Britain was still locking in a global war with France, Spain and the Netherlands that we’d convinced them to start.

    The Black Knights haven’t done anything idiotic.

    IDK about you but betraying the leader who’s responsible for every victory you’ve ever had is a pretty dumb move, imo. That would be like the Americans selling out Truman to the Germans, or George Washington to the Brits.

    Just, really, really, fuckin dumb.

    They are not ideological crusaders in a great quest to put an end to Britanian Global Hegemony. They’re a battlehardenned japanese resistance army.

    *Who have failed, consistently, in making any progress in their goals until Zero came along!

    They landed some good hits,

    Name two “good hits” they’ve landed without Zero’s leadership.

    had a nuke dropped in their faces,

    *Britannia had the nuke dropped in their faces.

    and were handed a political disaster on a platter.

    They’ve done their job? Looks like all they’ve done is cut a deal. Their job isn’t finished until Japan is liberated, which will never happen because that means giving up a monopoly on the Sakuradite which every other country depends on.

    Good job@getting played by Schneizel.

    Anyway, besides all that. The official Geass website now lists Nunnally, Sayoko, Ms. Rohmeyer, Guilford and Asahina as dead on their correlative webpage. That should end the speculation over whether they’ve been “transferred” somewhere else and are really still alive!111!1!. Lelouch/Zero is also separated from the Black Knights into his own little area.

    Man, I can’t wait for the next episode. I want to see more alliance shifts with Orange-kun, Xing Ke, Anya/Gino, Kallen. The Black Knights are so so fucked.

    How do you make an enemy out of someone you KNOW has a MINDFUCKHax, incredible strategic skills and one of the most powerful Knightmare Frames in existence?
    For all you know, he could walk back into the Ikaruga, Geassing people left and right to shoot themselves in the freakin head while doing his maniacal “AAHAHAHAHAHAHAH GETCHU” laugh.

    Talk about EPIC stupidity.

    Schniezel is massively ambitious, he’d get to them eventually, even if it wasn’t right away. He wants to rule everything.

    @Ominae

    Penguins can be fucking scary, they move extremely fast in water after all. Plus they look really cute.

    @Narrator 1

    They can’t do anything, they are just being small minded. Schniezel is a master manipulator and they just got played.

    @Ryuua

    Looks like you will enjoy next week then.

    @Kaguya

    Depends on how good her memory is, Kaguya was pretty young when Lelouch came to live with Suzaku’s family.

    @Square

    I report, you decide.

    @Rayndog

    Yes it is, the writer/director has said that there will be no season 3. They haven’t said no movies or OVAs for side story stuff, but a definite close to the primary storyline will be at the end of R2.

    @Jack

    Of course they aren’t, but they are stupid because they don’t realize that Schniezel will just reinvade them when they capture everyone else. Once the anti-Brittanian coalition shatters it’s all over. Some of us are smart enough to look beyond the immediate.

    And your comparison to the US is foolhardy. The US didn’t “cut a deal,” the US beat the British off, and set their own terms to force the British out. Here, the OotBK hasn’t beaten anyone at all, they are still in the middle of the war.

    @Seguun:

    “I seriously doubt either lelouch or suzaku will get killed. Sunrise has never killed the two main male characters. Case and point, Gundam Seed/Destiny.”

    Okay whoa…hold it right there, that one warrants broken silence. I’m not letting that one slide. Sunrise never kills the two main characters? What do you call Char’s Counterattack? How about Ideon? Dunbine? Cowboy Bebop? Gaogaigar Final? 08th MS Team? Like are you serious?! You kids need to learn your Sunrise before you start acting like experts. I know everybody now thinks they are experts on the company and it’s all popular to say Sunrise doesn’t do x and Sunrise always does y, but you really don’t know anything about the company do you? Yet you speak as if you do. That’s just sad son. Case in point Gundam Seed/Destiny….pssshttt, clearly those are the only Sunrise series ever made up to this point. I’m just….wow……that’s why anime fans fail these days. You know what though, they get away with it because a quote like yours rarely goes questioned anymore even though it’s about as true as the idea that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction just prior to the 2003 invasion.

    ….Like anybody is going to listen to me anyway. I mean I only speak the language of common sense, but that doesn’t matter on the internet anyway.

  31. Posted August 18, 2008 at 12:16 am | Permalink

    @Kaioshin
    Since Tomino stopped getting into the thick of things the death is hardly the norm for the mains these days. All the series you mentioned happened a while back and these days if they couldn’t do us the courtesy of killing off Shinn and most of the GSD cast I have little faith in Sunrise to actually kill off a main. Not saying they won’t but…given how even a minor like Lasse gets a second chance no one seems to die anymore. Even then it is hard to ignore the fact that most of the series you mentioned involved Tomino who could kill off characters with reckless abandon or has the memory of Victory Gundam slipped your mind?

    I would applaud them if they had enough daring to kill off either Suzaku or Lulu, but as I said before even more hated characters have escaped the executioner’s axe before.

    You speak nothing of common sense you speak like some cankerous old mecha fan from his ivory tower talking of series so old that most people could barely spell when they aired. You may content yourself with describing every new anime fan as a failure, but know this you discredit the mecha genre in doing so. Instead of spreading the gospel of Tomino and singing the praise of 8th MS Team you insist on being combative and hostile.

    What irks me most is not that you dare mention such august names like 8th MS Team, Char’s Counterattack, Cowboy Bebop, and Gaogaigar along side this series that has not proven itself fully, but rather your ignorant and uncouth comment that the slights on some animation company (even on such as Sunrise) is on par with the situation that led up to Iraq and the current situation there, how fucking dare you trivialize it by comparing such conflict where people are struggling to make things better and dying daily to idle talk about some unfeeling company whose goal is still profit. Aye perhaps comrade Segunn has “failed” but you sir have some nerve in declaring the Iraq as some small affair as comments regarding you most beloved corporate entity. Perhaps to you Iraq might be a small affair that the death toll is but a small thing in the safety of your room far from the bullets, shrapnel, IEDs, and terrorist blokes trying to blow you and everyone around you to bits. Bravo for countering an incorrect statement with an egregiously stupid one. I do not ask you put yourself in a position to have your ass shot off, but I do insist that you never use the Iraq situation in such a manner here.

    You are free to comment however you fee like regarding anime, but do not presume that this is the place where likening the Iraq tragedy to something so small as an internet statement about Sunrise as being anywhere near acceptable. You are hence forth warned and action will be taken if you bring up Iraq in such a manner again.

    Posted August 18, 2008 at 1:03 am | Permalink

    Kaioshin: There’s one problem with your statement – as of late, Sunrise has rarely killed main (protagonist) characters… instead preferring to do away with side-characters like they were popcorn. Even Mwu La Flaga’s death was retconned in the Special Edition, so they could reintroduce him in SEED DESTINY despite the fact that, had he survived the explosion, they’d either have seen his body floating in space RIGHT in front of the bridge… or else the ship would’ve run into his remains and splattered him across the viewport like a bug due to the force of the shot sending him on a vector towards the ship, which itself was moving at the time.

    Another case in point is Lockon of 00 – even if he IS his identical twin brother who has the same skills he does, they’ve brought the character back despite murdering him on screen beforehand and declaring him dead on his bio page (the way Nunnally and company are now officially KIA on their bios). This isn’t the same Sunrise that brought out 0073 or Char’s Counterattack, or killed Spike Siegel at the end of Cowboy Bebop. From Wing onwards, where the current crop of pilots see their genesis (pretty boy pilots who are super-aces that can do no wrong and who pilot overpowered mecha) they’ve been very reluctant to kill anyone who had a starring role. Only the secondaries, like Rolo here, get the knife… although I’m hoping to be pleasantly surprised by Lulu and Suzaku’s deaths at the end of the series.

    @Crusader: Fair enough. I forgot about your strong opinions on these matters again and regret it, but I also think that you are completely misjudging where I stand on the issue and putting words in my mouth as well making assumptions about my political opinions that I did not once state. This shall be the last time I talk about that matter here. I also must say that I am no worshipper of corporate entities by any stretch of the mind. In fact I subscribe to the progressive and classical liberal school of political thinking.

    You have your right to control the content allowed here and I won’t dispute that, but I’d appreciate it if you wouldn’t jump to conclusions about the kind of person I am based off of a single sentence I wrote in passing just the same. Regardless, like I said I don’t plan to comment much on blogs much for the time being and anyway so the next time you even hear from me could be months from now. Still I’ll add some anime related feedback just the same

    You mention the glory of certain series, but honestly I don’t even like the 08th MS Team that much. War In The Pocket is the U.C OVA for me. As for Victory Gundam, it hasn’t slipped my mind and never will, but Ideon had way more character death than Victory Gundam did and same with Dunbine so I chose them as his representative series. Lastly I have already done my part for the mecha genre long long ago. I’ve gotten more people interested in the genre and it’s history then I even care to mention, but those people came to me with an interest to listen, to ask questions and to learn what I could show or teach them about the genre I’ve invested 10 years of my life in.

    These days though I see no interest among the common anime fan to listen and to learn from anyone other then themselves and their favourite blogger. I see arrogance and assumption of correctness among people who are sharing comments with utter falsehoods in them. It saddens me as much as it upsets me and I kind of think…..I don’t know, that the anime community just isn’t what it was even 4 years ago. I won’t trouble you with these thoughts any longer, as I said I’m not really supposed to be commenting, but just consider for a second that I might not be the fussy, preachy person I come across as out of choice, but just out of sheer lamentation, frustration with and regret for a medium of entertainment whose fans I might not even be able to identify with at all in even a years time. If that sounds dramatic, too serious or lol worthy then whatever, but that’s all I have to say on the matter.

    @Haesslich: That’s really stretching it a bit with Lockon. How can you assume that Lyle is even going to have the same type of personality as Neil? I mean that’s like saying that after the death of Jason Todd they brought him back because Tim Drake came to take over as Robin. The two were virtual opposites in every possible way even though they took on the same identity. And I know people just love to bring up the example of Mwu over and over again and I never stop regretting that that monstrosity of a series ever came along to give people such a reservoir of fodder for the character ressurection thing, but come on. How long are we going to dwell on that dying and decaying franchise that sold itself out so long ago anyway. I liken it to kicking a dead carcass and truth be told I barely even consider it a true Gundam considering just how much it steals from other much better entries in the franchise. It’s like Franken-Gundam or something.

    I also do not subcribe to the Jason Miao belief of this not being the same Sunrise as the 70′s, 80′s and 90′s for one second. Not just because I disagree with the guy on everything right down to core values, but because I still see that company today. They were gone through most of 2000 through 2005, couldn’t find them to save my life, but they made a reappearance in 2006 and have been making a comeback ever since. Truth be told I had lost all faith in them at one point when Gundam Seed and Mai Hime ruled the block, but shows like Pailsen Files, Big 0 Season 2, Overman King Gainer, Banner of The Stars, Zegapain, Code Geass, Keroro Gunsou, Gintama, iDOLM@STER Xenoglossia, PlanetES, Steamboy, M.S Igloo and yes even Gundam 00 remind me far more of the old Sunrise then of the company that churned out trash like Gundam Seed Destiny, Mai Otome and it’s endless sequels, Cluster Edge, Crush Gear, and whatever other pet projects they worked on for Bandai. I see that same spark of creativity, general wit in character dialogue and desire to make an enjoyable series again as they one I saw way back in the day with Zeta Gundam.

    question regarding the logic flaws in the thinking patterns of the black knights, if they believe they have been geassed into obeying zero, then wouldn’t they have taken into account that lelouche could just order them not to shoot at him?

    so after reacting with fear and paranoia to mostly a onesided portrayal of evidence and unsubstansiated bullshit they have proven that they are mindless douche bags who got suckered in like Today Tonight’s viewers and therefore deserve the screw-over they are likely to recieve

  35. Posted August 18, 2008 at 2:36 am | Permalink

    @Kaioshin
    Truth be told I just find it to be incredibly in bad taste to talk about an ugly ongoing situation involving real people in the context as some sound bite to highlight something so trivial as an idle comment about Sunrise. It is something that will be a significant event in my short existence I will do my best to mitigate the worst of it, but never will I find the abuse of that situation as some tag line for something that pales in comparison to be acceptable. You are entitled to you opinion on the matter, but it is in poor tasted to say that Iraqi situation is in any way similar to criticism of Sunrise. We can only use words to criticize and mock Sunrise, words don’t kill, IEDs do.

    I can see why I will rarely see eye to eye with you I think 8th MS Team is the greatest Gundam ever made with 0080 not far behind. Right now I still don’t think the current Sunrise is capable of killing off either Lulu or Suzaku, they could have made Rolo die a death most befitting the murderer of Shirley but even then little things like mercy and the foolish notion of redemption in death overcame what could have been a delivery of justice most poetic. If Rolo can have a good death I hold out little hope that Sunrise is capable of killing off any main characters given how Rolo did not deserve such a clean death under any circumstances.

    Time changes things people come and go as the tides of time shift. I still consider that Tomino’s stewardship over Gundam was the most original period of it’s long history. These newer Gundams even Gundam 00 seem to be retreading old ground instead of doing new and more interesting things. Gundam 00 is at least a decent mix of older Gundams, and I hope they do somethings differently this time around. I doubt that there will be another Tomino and his heyday is still one I look more fondly upon even if I despised Victory Gundam. The decision to bring back the old team for Gundam 00 will hopefully be for the better however I still find it hard to ignore that fact that not much has changed aesthetically. I hope they can justify this decision given how Lasse was expendable and Feldt could have carried on Lockon’s legacy instead of Lyle, and if they fail to differentiate the two quickly it may well be a portent of things to come given how several others were brought back as well.

    Unlike you I don’t take drugs for recreational purposes. Now go take your diacetylmorphine you twat.

    The the Black Knights were idiots it was Lulu’s fault for not trusting them much in the first place, and once his orders to find Nunnally no longer made sense well… you might be able to follow a sis-con to the depths of hell, but if my CO started giving me orders to find his sister I’d say the gig is up. At least they had the sense to use dear leader as a bargaining chip…

    At least they forced Rolo to kill himself given how Lulu couldn’t do it even when fully emo over Nunnally. Rolo is dead and that is all that matters.

    Also you seem to be forgetting that said CO took them from petty resistance fighters and made them a superpower.Anything else you are willing to disregard and ignore to back your arguement ?

    Bargaining chip ? What made them think that Schniezel was trustworthy ? If they had used their brains they would ask Schniezel to give them some time in order think over it and use that time to confront Lelouch.If they betrayed him afterwards it would be more believable unlike the way it went:

    Schniezel: Zero is Lelouch and is a WIZARD!!!!
    BKs: HAX, give us our dirt back without any guarantee what-so-ever and we shall give him to you.If Ougi keeps his bitch , we’ll throw a discount in it too !

    Well Dr. Zentari honored graduate of the Dr. Phil School Medicine I must seek a second opinion for I think you are a quack and have no authority to legally sign prescriptions.

    Lulu is a wizard, and besides I am not a Rolo lover like you I care not how he was forced to die so long as he was well the Black Knights can do what ever they want. Rolo is dead! Long may he rot! Weep for Rolo if you must but I consider the Black Knights to have finally redeemed themselves as tools in rebellion for offing Rolo.

    The thing you fail to understand is that logic has long since left this series, this isn’t mere madness, this is CODE GEASS your logic has no place here. It was just as much as Lulu deserved he kept Rolo on way too long and could not avenge Shirley. They did what Lulu could not. Lastly what sense is there to keep fighting when the other side has all the nukes and doesn’t seem to have qualms about using them? Even if Lulu got a hold of some of his own Mutually Assured Destruction only works when both sides have reservations about pushing the shiny red button, Britannia doesn’t care who gets blown up and Lulu didn’t seem to care if the Black Knights got blown up too.

  42. Zentari
    Posted August 18, 2008 at 1:45 pm | Permalink

    @Crusader: Second opinion ? Certainly, I can drop again by tomorrow if you like.

    About the logic thing , leave it for when you are on /a/ only.Also if Code Geass has no place for my logic, what makes you think that it has for yours ?

    Rolo? What made you think I cared about him ? I don’t remember saying anything about him.
    I also agree that Lelouch kept Rolo WAY too long but you have to remember that he WAS planning on blowing him up (plan got screwed).

    Now about the peace thing, are you telling me that they surrendered because they were afraid of the nuke yet dared to try and make a bargain with someone who could squash them under his thumb,if he wanted so ? Shouldn’t they have surrendered unconditionally ? They were just butthurt from the whole Zero deal ,that’s all and instead of calmingly assessing the situation (read what I said before) they went along with that bloodsack Ougi.

    Why would you ask and fake doctor twice? Besides Dr. Zentari doesn’t work for Kaiser nor has he registered as a medical professional in the US.

    In preferring the Black Knights stick with Zero you must therefore accept the price of Rolo living one episode longer to justify it. That is a price I am not willing to pay Rolo had to die if their treachery was the price of his head then so be it.

    /a/ is for narut/a/rds I only go on /m/. Even if they were butthurt at the time that feeling of butt hurt allowed them to make a most wise decision. Besides you have to be crazy or stupid to challenge an amoral nuclear super power with their finger on the button with conventional power alone. Here even if they were butthurt discretion was the better part of valour.

    That was a brilliant sell on Schniezel’s part any way Lulu did Geass them but the elevens just assumed that Lulu Geassed them all to do bad things. Just goes to show the only way to build loyalty is trust. Even if they stick with Lulu now that they know he is a Britannian Prince there is little point in continuing the fight since they were probably play things for two dastardly Britannian Princes. Given the reputation of Britannian royalty I can see why they said fuck it. Either way its a Britannian victory and given how they don’t know why Lulu fights the reasonable assumption was that Lulu did it all to gain a the throne.

    Lulu never did tell them the truth and all it took was for Schniezel to tell them a half truth, which was more honesty than they ever got out of Zero.

    My apologies, I thought you were trolling too much.Now I know that you are an elitist on top of that.

    Wise decision ? They decided to sell the leader that got them so far based on half-assed evidence and the testimony of someone who’s screwing around with the enemy.Oh and what Asahina said.Given the reputation of the Britannian royalty , I CAN’T see why the fuck they did it because what you said works both ways.

    Since there is no fight for great justice any more it is wise to just call it quits. Since you can’t trust no one anymore why not do you own thing. Lulu told them to fuck off, so they might as well oblige Lulu and tell him to fuck off as well.

    @Crusader : There IS a need.I just can’t force you to :) .

    Oh and I DO agree with calling it quits but NOT this way.They SHOULD have proceeded carefuly instead of lashing out like that.Once again, they were colossal idiots.

    About what you said to buzzcok…While I don’t agree about you and your patience (the responce usually is: cry me a river, build me a bridge, JUMP OFF ) I can see where you are comming from and kinda agree.

    Remind me why main character death (Lelouch/Suzaku in this case) is automatically a good thing.

    Also, Code Geass isn’t going to win any awards for best writing or for seriousness, but it does have more logic than you people claim, even if it’s not always good or resorts to devices which usually make sense in fiction only.

    If you try to apply realism to many of these series, including some actual masterpieces, they fall apart just as quickly.

    Hey I though that they agreed to hand Zero to Shneizel alive not shot all over or maybe saying handing him over already implied dead or alive.
